What on earth has happened to this once great beer institution? Glasses left uncollected, marstons pedigree was off and the wainwrights was “too lively”. I’m sorry but I won’t be returning to this favourite of ours anytime soon. Arthur will be spinning.

Was taken on a suprise afternoon cheeseboard and Guinness date, highly recommend it! This place has everything that is great about an old school pub - good affordable food, quality beers and clean pipes, chatty landlord and friendly locals. Not many places like this left, so support it if you can.

Still probably the best pub in Didsbury with Marston's beers kept in top condition. Excellent cheese, paté and pie "lunches" available pretty much all day, but not scored this review because we didn't have one. Friendly service plus sports screens if you are interested. A true local. Prices not bad either, especially with a CAMRA card.

This pub has the most amazing staff I’ve ever come into contact with. As soon as you enter the premises you’re made to feel right at home and nothing is too much, the prices for the area are absolutely stellar and the atmosphere alone is fabulous. They serve an array of snacks like cheese pie, pork pies and scotch eggs etc along side pickled onions and chutneys galore ! The food is absolutely mouthwatering and also very fairly priced, since I first came to this pub I haven’t stopped coming back. Tom and Julie are the perfect people to run this lovely pub and I wouldn’t take my custom anywhere else.

The food and drink were simply outstanding. I tried a few different dishes and everything was cooked to perfection and bursting with flavor. The beer selection was impressive, with a wide range of local and international brews to choose from. What really stood out to me, though, was the service. The staff went above and beyond to make sure I had a great time and that all my needs were taken care of. Their attention to detail and genuine care for their customers made the experience truly memorable. Overall, I would highly recommend Royal Oak to anyone looking for a great meal, a great drink, and a great time. If you want to experience the best of English pub culture, then this is the place to be!

First came here in the late 1970's. Always been a gem of a Marston's pub. Thus having a great pint of Pedigree. Famous for the lunchtime cheese and pate selection. In the old days the massive cheeses were displayed on the bar and cut to order. Carried in and out from upstairs every lunchtime. Doggie bags a must due to the amount of cheese, pate, bread and pickles. Despite a fire the pub is little changed.( The Music Hall posters did not survive.) Still do cheese but portioned. £7.50 for choice of three..cheese/pate, bread and pickles. Still great value. TV for sport. Lots of locals.

I’ve lived and worked in Didsbury for 10 years and been a mum for 6, my son does various hobbies nearby and we have been coming to The Royal Oak after the school run before his hobby’s start, we are usually there for around 30 minutes, today me and my 6 year old son went in and I ordered a Diet Coke and a packet of crisps for my son, to be told by the bartender ‘we are not child friendly’, I was taken back as it’s 2020 and i dint expect discrimination against children on Wilmslow Road when every other establishment is child friendly? I drank my Diet Coke and my son ate his crisps in less than tens mins, I returned my empty glass/packet of crisps and let the bartender know we wouldn’t be returning, he was not the owner and wasn’t bothered in the slightest, his response was ‘i don’t know who said you could come in here previously’, clearly they don’t need the business from family’s or parents (the pub is always empty after the school run, unlike every where else we go too which are busy) there are plenty of cafes, restaurants, coffees shops and licensed pubs which welcome children after the school run, I’m writing this review to tell parents and family’s to avoid and spend your salary elsewhere, go to The Fletcher Moss instead, everywhere else on Wilmslow road welcomes children, dogs and vegans! The Royal Oak needs to adjust to the times and not just welcome builders and pensioners, it’s 2020 not 1852, my son certainly won’t be having a pint on here when he turns 18, remember it’s the next generation your being rude too!

I used to frequent this pub a few years ago and they did a great cheese and pate lunch. When I arrived today there was a big board outside advertising cheese and pate meals served “all day, everyday”. I was eager to get inside and enjoy a drink and great lunch. The pub looked good from the outside and decor inside was good. Appeared to have three seating areas inside all with big TV screens showing football matches making it impossible to sit anywhere to relax and have a chat. Nevertheless, we persevered, ordered a drink and then asked for two cheese and pate lunches. No luck with that one. Despite the advertising outside it appears they weren’t doing food at all, maybe too busy watching football. Hey hoe, another fond memory bites the dust.

A very traditional local pub with worn décor, big TVs showing sport, decent & well kept beer at a great price (2.75 for a pint of Pedigree). It was busy on a Thursday night with most tables taken (it has been v empty in the past) which was great to see. Helpful staff (the printer broke so they hand wrote a receipt) but above all - decent beer at a great price (well worth repeating).

A nice "local" to enjoy a fair priced drink and watch the football. The cheeses on the bar are really tempting, and at £1.50 for a piece of gala pork pie - this is a good deal. Especially when there are jars of pickled onions, Branston, piccalilli and mustards available ! (PS. The pie slices are individually wrapped in cling-film and dated )

The Royal Oak absolutely baffles me. Why would you ditch the best lunchtime ploughman's lunch in Manchester? I used to meet my Dad here maybe every month for a lunchtime pint and a ploughman's, and it was unfailingly busy. Alas no more. No more of the delicious homemade pickled onions, huge hunks of bread, superb pates, salamis and cheeses washed down with a pint of cider. Such a shame to have seen it go, just can't understand it. Would happily have paid a quid more per portion, so generous were the sizes. Ah well.

It's not often nowadays you can find a proper home made pie, but The Royal Oak does them and does them well. It's an old fashioned pub and the food is old fashioned too. I had a mince and potato pie, great pastry and tons of real filling, chunky vegetables and lean, tasty mince. It came with a pile of chips, peas and gravy and with a pint came in at under a tenner. Good, straightforward pub grub.
