At the bar. Felt uncomfortable with the locals constantly swearing and barman swearing just as bad. Not a kid friendly place. Good prices tho. Also vaping inside.

People allowed to vape in bar. If you don't want to inhale secondhand nicotiine, give this place a miss.

The room was ok. It was clean but a few wee tweaks like the drawers wouldn't open and we had to take them out. But it didn't ruin our stay here. The hosts were lovely and I think that's the positive vibe from the hotel. I.think the owner needs to update a few things for the guests especially the WiFi! You have lovely hosts with Dee and her partner so make it an asset to get your hotel better cosmetically . You are in a fantastic spot in anstruther. Thank you Dee

Whenever we come to Anstruther the bar in the Royal hotel is inevitably our pub of choice. It might not be the smartest looking pub in the town, but it is definitely the most “local”, with a good atmosphere, excellent service and spot on Tennent’s.

Had a great couple of nights in the Royal bar. Really welcoming place, staff were fantastic, esp cammy the barman. All the locals were cracking and very welcoming. I didn't see the rooms but would recommend the bar to anyone. It doesn't look that welcoming from outside but you def get a warm welcome inside

Dot be fooled with these photos ,but having said that we didn’t see any of the rooms in the photos ,we were shown to room 1 a very tiny room with crumpled white duvet covers ,whoever made these beds were in a hurry ,the bin in the room still had the last occupants rubbish ,the tiny shower room was the tiniest shower room I had ever seen ,last occupants rubbish also in bin ,the skirting boards in here were really dirty as was the seals round the toilet bowl also the seals in the shower ,the toilet roll had a few bits of roll left ,the soap dispenser was sticky and didn’t dispense ,no towels also ,I asked the girl who showed us the room for towels and toilet roll ,and said I wasn’t happy with the room and was there another one we could have ,her answer was that there was only this room and she said to me that she would like the Ritz as well but she would keep us going with plenty biscuits and tea cakes ,……can you believe that ! This is the girl who was otherwise very pleasant with the extremely long fake eyelashes ,we booked for four nights and wished we hadn’t ,after three days I had to ask for the bins to be emptied ,this was 9am at breakfast ,we got back to the room at approx 3pm ,bins still hadn’t been done and Yolanda outside chatting to young kids opposite the hotel ,I asked a guy in the bar regarding bins and could we have the toilet cleaned ,bins were then emptied but toilet not cleaned ,we heard from some of the locals that Yolanda was only there till October which made me wonder if she was just not caring ,our last morning breakfast tables had not been cleaned and no cutlery or anything ,Yolanda was on her own and seemed to me she wasn’t up early enough to see to the tables ,I’m disgusted to think we paid £396 for four nights ,in a not too clean room and shower room ,think the owners of this hotel should take a look at room 1 ,we won’t be back to this hotel ….

Well where to I start. We booked the hotel pretty much based on the reviews which on a whole are good. Our room for the night was £99, above average but par for the course as hotels take advantage of staycation demand and recoup some of their losses. Some of the rooms have been refurbished but sadly room 5 and 6 haven't been reached yet. Our room (6) had an unusual feature in that it appeared to be on a slope so anything with wheels would end up at one end of the room. A previous guest decided it would be a good idea to hang from the curtain pole so we only had one set of curtains on one of the two windows . Thankfully the blind was still intact. Our shower pressure provided a slight drizzle which made it unusable. The shower door didn't close so maybe just as well. Despite being around 20 degress our heating was on full bung, this proved to be initially uncomfortable but I managed to shut the valves. Toilet seat was insecure and could only be used in a ladies position. I had to assume the ladies position which turns out quite well especially if you have had a few beers. We had a small TV which satisfied my wife's tipping point fix. When we popped into bed in the evening it was only then we realised we didn't have a headboard. That will save it banging against the wall I joked. The saving grace for our stay was the excellent Scottish full breakfast and our host Karen. Clearly passionate about providing good customer service. Karen has a lovely bubbly attractive personality. Our friends room (5) frankly was a health hazard and I couldn't have stayed in it. The room has suffered from flood damage and the smell of damp particularly in the morning was accrid. The floor kind of had the same movement as a squeaky trampoline. Both rooms desperately need refurbished . My suggestion to the hotel would be not to use the rooms as they will have a serious impact in the short term on the hotels good feedback rating which they currently enjoy.

The Royal Hotel is probably the least fashionable and most basically furnished bar in Anstruther, yet it is consistently our favourite pub whenever we visit. Because of Coronavirus restrictions there is currently no music from the jukebox, so the atmosphere has been muted, but on a wet and dreary evening, with only four punters in the bar, we were warmly greeted. And while the music is absent, the banter is still ever-present, and a nice thing about the Royal is that you are automatically included in such banter. And one of the older gentlemen, who kept telling us that he was 73, provided the best laugh of the evening when he told Mrs H from across the room that she was a lovely looking young woman, and in almost the next breath, told us that he had cataracts! As I told him - “that has to be the worst chat up line in history.” As expected, we enjoyed another most pleasant evening in this real, locals’ pub. We enjoyed good service from the friendly barman who served the best Tennents in town.

We visited the bar of the Royal hotel to watch my husband's team play in the semi-final of the Betfred Cup. Though it was busy, we managed to get seats at the bar. The drink was very reasonably priced- a pint and a g&t for £6.60 (I think,I wasn't paying!) The only issue was with the TVs. The main TV was blocked by others at the bar and 2 guys playing snooker/pool in front of it. 2 other TVs, one behind the bar and one opposite that which kept blanking out. We did manage to see the match though, with a resounding win for hubby's team. The surprise, and a lovely touch, was delicious, fresh sandwiches produced at half-time. I have never experienced that before but will remember it for next time we are in Anstruther for the weekend when hubby's team is playing!

This is a small hotel with about 8 rooms, situated just off the sea front at Anstruther. There is free public parking in several nearby locations all a few minutes walk away. The rooms are clean and tidy with a kettle and bottled water, with a tv and free wi if. There was ample hot water the shower was good.Breakfast was included in the price and is served in a dedicated dining room , while you can help yourself to cereal fruit and toast a full cooked breakfast will be made to order. Everything you might want to discover in Anstruther is a few minutes walk away but the location itself while not picturesque is quiet. There is a supermarket about 15 minutes away on foot. The stairs are quite narrow to the rooms and some floors gently slope so might not suit an elderly traveller.

Stayed here for one night as part of my Fife Coastal Path hike. Met by the barman for check in. Friendly enough and given key and other details. Room was a good size and en-suite facilities ok size too. Small wall mounted TV was at one end of the room and bed at the other, so not an option if you wanted to watch it and relax in bed. Shower was a little under-powered but decent enough. My room looked onto the main road into Anstruther so the noise levels at times wasn't the best but bearable. Bed was comfy and room was clean if a little tired looking. Brekkie was usual Scottish fair, but opted for cereal and porridge was good. The serving staff were friendly and attentive. Price was ok for what you got, and would stay here again.

Nice little hotel, friendly staff room was clean and tidy, bathroom was a bit on the small side for me but ok for an overnight. Bar well stocked and busy, breakfast was brilliant and cooked to order, plenty to choose from No parking is a problem, however we did manage to find a spot not that far away. Bar open to 1 in the morning so it can get a bit loud, but we managed to sleep through the Halloween fun Overall we loved the overnight and will be back I'm sure.

If you are looking for a hotel with air conditioning and all the modern comforts look elsewhere. If you are happy to stay in a pub where you keep the windows open at night for fresh air (it was unseasonly warm), where the locals sing and dance on the footpath outside late at night, and where they know your name and your drink order after just a short time - stay here. There are no meals in the evenings, but breakfast is very good (the freshly cooked omlette is lovely). Parking is in one of the public car parks a short walk away. Our group had 4 of the 8 rooms and each of the other couples were as happy as we were. Anstruther is a very nice village and it is well worth a visit - and if you are happy to stay in a pub, stay at the Royal.

We stayed there four nights for the East Neuk music festival. Bedroom with en suite wasn’t flash but was all we required for our stay. Breakfasts were excellent and catered to our dietary needs, the staff were a laugh a minute and the bar was a great place to meet warm, welcoming locals. We had a great time.

Just visited The Royal Hotel, Anstruther for dinner. We were pleasantly surprised at what turned out to be an outstanding meal. Beautiful homemade soup, followed by beef that was probably cooked better than I've tasted in years - and we enjoy trying out the nicest steak houses across the Central Belt. Service was perfect. Overall, lovely meal, served by a lovely, friendly waitress in tasteful surroundings. Thoroughly recommend a visit.

Went here for lunch a few weeks ago and was hugely disappointed, especially having visited before and enjoyed an evening meal here. The service was very bad, and despite repeatedly asking for gluten free food, and asking the waitress to check with the chef, I was still served regular bread on top of my starter, and given a gluten containing burger for my main. Aside from these mix ups, the food that was served was of a very poor standard. Tables could also have done with a good wipe. Not impressed at all and definitely won't return.

The Royal is on the Main Street in the centre of Anstruther. As we were staying at The Royal, breakfast was included and had a good choice of cereal and a huge English breakfast, cooked beautifully by Marilyn. The lunch menu was varied with a good selection and reasonably priced. Would recommend. The owners, Anne & Erwin and their son Craig were friendly and very welcoming
