The royal george in Brighton and Hove

I don't usually make a habit of leaving negative reviews, but I feel impelled to after the embarrassing and terrible reception we received on Sunday night! Myself, my partner, my daughter and her boyfriend had experienced a really fantastic evening up in Brighton and had walked back to Hove. We decided to have a couple of drinks in the Royal George before heading back to our Air BnB, as my daughter and I have drank in the pub many times before when it was a Wetherspoons. We were the only customers in the pub and after my partner had ordered all our first drinks, we sat in a booth singing along to the music being played really having a pleasant time. My daughter who is autistic and doesn't really like going to the bar as she suffers with social anxiety decided that she would get us all another drink and she went to the bar with her boyfriend. About five minutes later, they returned to the table and my daughter was so embarrassed as the barman had refused to serve her stating that she was too drunk! At first, I was really shocked and couldn't understand why he would do this as her boyfriend had clearly had more drink than her and he had already served my partner with her drink, so I challenged him about this. At no point was there any raised voices or animosity, but we were just confused by his decision to refuse to serve her. The mood at our table suddenly dropped, so we decided to finish our drinks and leave. I noticed that the barman had gone outside to the security who then came in and stood opposite us in an intimidating manner, so my partner asked him if he wanted us to leave to which the security man replied if you want. This made my daughter even more anxious, so we decided to leave immediately and after leaving the premises we all were feeling very unhappy and it put a dampener on what had been a very enjoyable day. On the way back to the Air BnB, we went to the Fireaway pizza takeaway shop and I encouraged my daughter to go into the shop to order food, as I didn't want the experience at the Royal George hindering her confidence. Whilst the food was cooking, I asked the front of house if they had struggled to understand my daughter and did they consider her too drunk. At first he looked confused, so I told him what had happened at the Royal George and he was astounded and replied that he thought that she had been very polite and not drunk at all!! I appreciate that there might be groups of people who do go round causing trouble and endanger bar staff, but I can assure you that none of us are like that. You need to be aware that not every disability is visible, so you should train your bar staff to understand this fact! If the barman wanted to go home early, he should have said!! Although we visit friends in Hove on a frequent basis, we will never be stepping foot in your pub again and we will instead go to George Street Tap across the road, which always looks busy - I WONDER WHY?!?!

Amazing little find! Lovely decor inside and friendly staff. Food was delicious! Some of the best Thai food I have had and we ended up going 2 days in a row it was so good. Only let down is the outside decor as it looks like a Wetherspoons and doesn’t match the indoor decor.

Not surprised to see the negative reviews on here considering people are asking for a Wetherspoons back they can always go to a Wetherspoons. The food and service was outstanding, prices are within the local area, don’t be put off buy people wanting a Wetherspoons, this place is fantastic and the food is some of the best Thai food around. If you want a Wetherspoons go to one but want amazing food and great staff come here!!

Came here on a Friday and ended up coming back the following day, lovely decor inside and the Thai food was absolutely outstanding, alcohol selection was very good also. Staff were very friendly and felt very welcomed.

Nice jazz beer excellent food excellent beer selection, Sunday Roasts look fabulous, will come back and try another time

went in here today for a trip to hove and was very impressed with place and the staff.i liked it so much i will be coming back to hove just to come to this pub.everyone was nice and friendly and the toilets and surroundings all nice and clean.

We were told by your staff to lower our voices down. We seen 2 People having their beers almost finished and hearing them to leave after they finish. We felt intimidated and not in place to be told off. Price is too high for the location and being replaced by more expensive place is not doing any good to your company

Tried this pub for the first time since it was converted from a Wetherspoons. The decor was slightly more luxurious but over half the seats are now very uncomfortable high stools with no backs. Choice of food for Sunday was very restricted - steak pie or Sunday Lunch with everything served with mashed potato. Wetherspoons was far superior at a lower cost. I ordered Roast Beef without gravy and received two very thin slices of gristley meat smothered in gravy. The roast potatoes (2) were good as was the Yorksire pudding but everything else was very poor. I was told they serve mashed potato with the Sunday Lunch because the boss is Irish! This may be acceptable in Ireland but not in England. The red cabbage and green vegetables were unpleasant and covered in gravy.

A nice conversion from the old Wetherspoons. A good selection of drinks and very nice helpful staff. We ordered dinner my friend had squid which he said was very nice, I had the fish and chips. The batter looked a bit overcooked when it came up but I got on with it anyway. As I cut the batter open I noticed there was no fish inside. A member of staff asked how our meals were and I pointed out there was no fish in my fish and chips. The waitress said she would mention it to the kitchen and came back and offered me a free sweet which I declined. Rather than stay for another drink we left.

Disappointing visit today, it’s 11.45 am & my disabled friend and I are en route home to Brighton after being met by closed doors!. Friend was so excited about her first visit ( I had been already & heaped praise on the Royal George). Opening g times are advertised as 11am!

Claudia and Max made me feel so welcome and relaxed. I had a really nice lunch and coffee and would definitely recommend to go. It's a far cry from the old weatherspoons atmosphere 👍

Lovely Sunday afternoon nice and sunny sar outside George St hove nice choice on the menu of roasts I had pork belly was to die for really tender full of vegs and the rest the staff were amazing nothing was a problem nice a d clean the loos were spot less will b back well done royal geo happy days
