Had a coffee and scone before our tour around Mary Kings Close, the girls were lovely that served us and even brought over a portion of cake for free as it was my sisters birthday. We felt that the scones and coffee were good value for money especially for a capital city.

Visited here twice during our weekend stay and enjoyed both times. Tucked away this cafe offers sandwiches, paninis, soup and a variety of amazing cakes, traybakes and scones. We tried different things each time and were not disappointed. Hot drinks were delicious as well. All served by very friendly staff. Do pay a visit!!

It was New Years day and we felt like a bacon butty but when we got to the counter to order, we were told they were only serving soup and panini's. I needed bacon!! As we were hungry and had already tried somewhere else, we stayed and ordered panini and tea. It was tasty and filled a hole. A bit of advice to this cafe, please don't have a board out the front, advertising something you haven't got! Even though it's on the Royal Mile, there are other places to go for a quick bite at the same tourist prices.

Menu, restricted to very small amount. Had cheese and tomato sandwich. Not good. Bread had black pieces all over it. Waiter said fron ovens/grill. More like picked up along the way. Very nice tomato soup. Not cheap but not expensive. Ok for quick cup of tea.

Stopped here before we took the Mark King Close tour. Ordered the high tea. My advice. Don't. At £25 I didn't expect a huge amount but I'd have thought cheese, ham and salmon sandwiches wouldn't be that hard to get right. Wrong. When you don't butter the bread nothing sticks, and nothing did, (seriously it was just plain bread and grated cheddar). And then we move onto the not so light scones. Not enough jam and cream for two people (enough for a thin scraping). If you like rustic you'd like the chunks of sponge cake atop this three tiered delight;). The only redeeming factor was the couple of macaroons and shortbread. Should of had the soup :(

My boyfriend and I ate here after visiting The Real Mary King's Close, as the gift shop opens into this restaurant. We weren't planning on staying for lunch until I saw the most delicious-looking bacon and brie panini I'd ever seen, accompanied by kettle style crisps and salad. I ordered what I saw and I wasn't disappointed; it tasted as good as it looked. We also ordered their chocolate orange cake - a must have! The food was all reasonably priced and the room itself was quaint.

We visited here for breakfast one Saturday morning. We chose this cafe because of the good reviews on trip advisor and the close proximity to our accommodation. We were the first customers in and we all ordered full scottish breakfasts. The first breakfast came out 20 minutes later. The second breakfast came out 20 minutes after that..the 3rd breakfast came out 20 mins after that..the 4th one ditto..the 5th one never came as they'd missed it off the order even though it was bought and paid for. At the start of this experience we joked about the slow service but as were were't in a particular rush we initially weren't too concerned..by the 3rd breakfast we were getting a bit fed up. Each of us basically ate on our own. We asked why the service was so staggered and were told that the kitchen was so small they could only get one cook in and they could only cook one breakfast at a time. This in my opinion is very poor planning, I'd hate to see what they'd do if they were busy! How can you run a cafe with 40 seats and offer such a ridiculous way of serving food. If they'd said they were short staffed or some other disaster had occurred we'd have understood but their explanation was potty! One of our party asked to speak to the manager who apologised and we had a refund for the breakfast they missed. We went in at 9am and left at 10.30! Ww won't be going again, which is a shame because the cafe itself was very pleasant!

Oh my good god, where to begin, a Sunday lunchtime in January was never going to be busy, we were the only ones there and now we know why.. Friends of ours were here last September and raved about it, I think they must have been somewhere else. The coffee in the Royal Exchange Coffee House, may have well have been cheap instant, insipid and watery, the tea my wife had was really nice, the hot chocolate my kids had was bitter and tasted like hand wash cream.(more on the hand washing later!) We ordered at the counter and paid in advance - never a fan of this in what is supposed to be an upmarket cafe, there are signs and menus everywhere mouthing off about the best of Scotland and tasting our best of something similar, an award clearly either paid for or stolen from another cafe not paying attention at the time, our soup came out, luke warm but tasty enough, the "home made breads" which was advertised as sourdough from a community bakery was clearly not, it was a thin slice of frozen bread, how do i know this is frozen.. mine still was in the middle, I asked the waitress where the sourdough was, oh we don't do that bread any more and haven't for a while, the sandwiches, again normal sliced bread, with some butchers smoked ham, obviously supermarket purchased as I have never seen a butcher offer a perfectly cut square of wafer thin ham, just a big let down, the tour itself was a rip off and we only ate in because of the weather outside and the kids wanted food, good to see the cafe continued the theme of really poor value for money.. Avoid and don't be suckered in by the fancy awards and shiny signs. Oh and dont use the toilets (if you are lucky enough to find a working one) as there is no hot water in them, and after a complaint about this to the waitress, this is an issue every weekend.. I certainly hope the staff toilets and kitchens have hot water!

Visited here for breakfast as it seemed to be connected to The Old Town Chambers apartments. This may be the worst breakfast we've ever had. The breakfast menu is simply a list of potential breakfast rolls. The main problem being that when we ordered 4 rolls, they only had 3 left. It was 10am and the place only opened at 9am (and there was nobody else in there). The smoked bacon was not smoked. The sausages were cheap and stodgy. The coffee, supposed to be from an artisan outfit in Edinburgh was like weak pond water. The rolls themselves were lacquered in what tasted like the cheapest of margarines. The staff were quite pleasant, this being the only saving grace. Avoid!

We entered the cafe for a sandwich and drinks before the guided tour of Mary King's Close. We were at the till point at 1.55p.m. - It took more than 10 minutes to place the order. There was considerable confusion with the staff using the till. At 2.20 a waitress bought us a bowl of soup we hadn't ordered, we asked about our order to be told it was on the way. Sadly our order did not arrive in time for us to consume it and take our booked tour. We went to the till and obtained a refund. The management of this cafe need to get there act together. Unfortunately this was a very disappointing end to a fantastic holiday in Edinburgh. We had found all the other restaurants & cafes we used provided excellent service & delicious food.

Well we had a lovely lunch at the cafe and could fault nothing with the food or the staff as they were extremely pleasant. One little word of warning though ....check your statements if you pay by card as the machine double charged us for our meals. There was some confusion when we were paying and so the staff there put our transaction through twice. On returning home I checked my account and the transaction had indeed been taken off twice so after quickly phoning them it was refunded without any hassle. I'd like to thank the staff for this as it could have worked out at an extremely costly lunch at £21.40 x 2 .....

My friend and I popped into the cafe while waiting for the Real Mary King Close tour we had later in the afternoon. We each ordered a pot of tea, a tart and the little duo deserts - my friend had the chocolate one and I had the raspberry cheesecake. We loved our tea and loved the fact we could just sit quietly by the window chatting and enjoying our tea and deserts. Sam served us and she was so sweet and lovely to talk to, and she checked on us to see how we were going and we were happy to strike up a quick convo with her about our plans to go on to a different ghost tour that evening. My friend and I loved the cafe, the food, and the staff so I'll definitely be going there again sometime! I highly recommend it, whether or not you're doing the RMK tour, but definitely if you're just waiting for the tour or wanting to sit down and chat after! :)

We visited the royal exchange in mid august 2015. We were booked on a tour at 2pm and had an hour to spare. We ordered soup and coffee/tea. There were two of us. The tables were just over half full so it wasnt overly busy. The drinks got served quite quickly but we had to ask about the soup after 25 minutes. When it finally arrived it was lukewarm and not very nice. Overall very disappointing.

Was recommended here as I am celiac and they have a gf menu. As we were unsure what time we would be going (prior commitment before hand) I did not book. We arrived at 2.45pm and there was a sign outside saying 'bookings only, no walk ins' This was NOT on their website. We went in and spoke to a female member of staff who advised exactly what the sign had said. I then spoke to a male member of staff and asked where on their website it stated what the sign said, he said it didn't. Advised that due to rugby being on, they were unusually busy. The restaurant is large and they were not full to capacity. Asked if there was anyway we could have a table for 2 for an hour, point blank told no. We won't be returning.

Booked in the restaurant for our 20th Wedding Anniversary. We weren’t staying at the hotel but did add that we were celebrating upon booking. We arrived early expecting to have a drink at the bar but the table was ready for us. We received a complimentary glass of champagne each on arrival. The staff were fantastic and couldn’t have done more. They even sorted us out with a special dessert to help celebrate the occasion. The food was to a high standard and the portion size was perfect. Altogether a fantastic meal and exemplary service.

We approached the café at 9am with laundry and were greeted by four Scottish Terriers who were apparently running the place, until Graham arrived up the stairs to ask what the heck we wanted...and we knew immediately we were in the right place! I've read some of the reviews, and if you don't understand Graham in the first 5 seconds of him opening his mouth, you don't deserve to be there...and I am pretty sure Graham will know/sense it himself. I think he relishes poor reviews. But we felt immediately at home, and once we passed the "test", Graham was the perfect host. I had to put up with insults on my lack of fashion sense and some uncomfortable history lessons regarding the villainy of George Washington, but my wife and I would not trade our experience for anything! Graham practically did our laundry for us, made us coffee, and even gave me a lovely (empty) can of haggis. Thank you for the experience Graham! I hope you enjoy the US Dollar Bill (with Washington on it)...and I won't forget that American history is really Scottish history!
