Philly's Edinburgh in Edinburgh, City of

Was recommended here as I am celiac and they have a gf menu. As we were unsure what time we would be going (prior commitment before hand) I did not book. We arrived at 2.45pm and there was a sign outside saying 'bookings only, no walk ins' This was NOT on their website. We went in and spoke to a female member of staff who advised exactly what the sign had said. I then spoke to a male member of staff and asked where on their website it stated what the sign said, he said it didn't. Advised that due to rugby being on, they were unusually busy. The restaurant is large and they were not full to capacity. Asked if there was anyway we could have a table for 2 for an hour, point blank told no. We won't be returning.

Philly's Edinburgh is located just outside of the city centre in South Gyle which is accessible via train/tram and is close to the airport. I was meeting a friend who was down there with work for the week and after looking online stumbled across this place. The restaurant is really large, modern and has some American vibes too it without forgetting the views overlooking the tram tracks. The staff are really friendly and the menu is well varied for any tastebuds. We were lucky enough to be there on a 2 for 1 pizza night, so our choice had already been made, I had the pizza inferno, my best friend and girlfriend both had the whole hog pizza which is basically every topping in one. Our food came out really quickly but unfortunately the pizza wasn't cooked enough for our liking with the base still soft and the toppings half cooked and falling off the pizza. If the pizzas had been cooked for a bit longer, the toppings and base might of tasted better rather than it all falling apart as you lift up a slice. I wasn't blown away with my first visit here but it could of been a one off. Prices at Philly's are standard with a few expensive options but that is to be expected with an American style restaurant like this.

Booked online for a group of 6 on Friday evening at 8pm. Arrived just before to be ignored by staff, then to be told that the kitchen had closed due to no bookings. Pointed out that we had booked earlier that evening for 8pm. When the waitress checked she confirmed our booking but said we couldn't eat. No apology. Website allows bookings for 8pm and states that the restaurant/bar is open till late.

Waited 45 minutes for 2 pizzas, went to the bar for them to tell me they’ve had till problems and they hadn’t kept track of all the orders and it hadn’t even been put on, staff hadn’t made any effort to go out and speak to people that ordered food and it wasn’t even busy. Offered 10% discount and to put the pizzas on then which given the circumstances wasn’t anywhere near enough and I was sitting with my 6 month old child who I had to get home.

Had a really enjoyable lunch. Really nice, big place, very clean. Was able to sit outside as it was a sunny day...nice area to sit in. The food was tasty and we felt for the two mains and bottle of wine we had it was good value for money. Was quite quiet for a Saturday which is a shame, but we were there at 12 so may have got busier as the day went on. I'd recommend it for anyone who's in the area and looking for a tasty bite to eat and drink.

I am glad I did not read the reviews before visiting, since my experience is at odds to many of them. Firstly I have to say that the all of food was really good. Nachos to start were plentiful, great tasting salsa, loads of guacamole, sour cream and jalapeños. We particularly liked the fact they had a double layer of cheese through the tortilla chips. Only complaint was there was too much! Mains were a bacon and Brie burger, pancake stack and Philly cheese steak. Burger was big, juicy and well filled with stuff. Bacon could have been crispier but all was tasty. Excellent and hot fries. Pancakes were plentiful so some came home. The streaky bacon really would have benefitted from being cooked for longer. It felt a bit soggy but tasted ok. I always think streaky bacon is best dry snd crispy so the fat has been reduced. Lastly was the Philly cheese steak. No gristle in ours. Lots of meat, tasty sauce, melted onions etc. It was lush. No room for puds. We took a chance on coffee and it went far better than expected. Nicely made strong coffee that was well up to the mark. Huge picture windows look out across a sunny Edinburgh Park, but nice still. If you know Edinburgh, it’s in a bit of a strange area, but loads of parking and the greenery and tram-watching makes up for that. Not overly clear who the clients for an American sports bar in this area are, but there was s steady stream of customers whilst we were there. It’s a cavernous space with a large bar and tables seemingly spread around ‘the edge’. Sports on multiple screens and loud music mean it is a bit noisy, but that is the point I guess. Staffing and management of them was a bit of an issue. Waiters were all lovely when they came, (and effusively apologetic when they forgot to bring the bill), but given the place wasn’t overly busy, it bordered on the inattentive. So perhaps a bit of work on team management and maintaining the food quality we enjoyed on Saturday afternoon and it could be a great place.

Staff were more than pleasant, but the food was disgusting. Philly Cheese Steak (their signature dish) sounded worth a try, but it was nothing more that 100% gristle on a hot dog bun. Couldn’t eat it. Tried, but didn’t want to get sick. I’m sure their other food was nice, but this was dire. Avoid at all costs. Offered to comp the food, but we wanted to pay so that were could warn others. Chips were ok though, if you need to look for a silver lining.

We visited Phillys on Sunday for their BBQ - we were not disappointed. The food was amazing - had the platter for the 3 of us and had to take a doggy bag home!! The brisket was tender and the ribs to die for. What a great Sunday afternoon we had. Topped of with a Gluten Free Brownie - the best ever. The service was fantastic and the staff so attentive. We will be back - such a hidden gem

We arrived at 11:57am for a 12:00pm opening for a business lunch. We were turned away as there were too many bookings for the number of staff on shift - we were a party of two. Had there been a queue of people waiting on their 12:00pm reservations, I’d have understood, but the area round the Gyle was empty! This just adds insult to injury as my previous visit was equally disappointing. The restaurant was again, empty, but it took over an hour to bring our order. I’m not sure how the place is being run, but the management team have a 100% record of disorganisation and disappointment! It’s a real shame as the food is pretty good and they have a great venue. Whoever is supposed to be benefiting from Philly’s monopoly in the Gyle now that business’s are encouraging staff back to the office needs to take a serious look at its management.

We've been coming here since we moved to the area and it's always a nice atmosphere and food is amazing. Come here to watch the football, rugby and everything else. Staff are always welcoming and friendly. Everyone moaning about the food, staff and service charge, did you ask the staff to take it back? Can't find the staff? They're behind the bar. And service charges are standard practice and can ask for it to be removed if you don't think they deserved it. Peace out.

I understand if it’s busy. However there was clearly loads of room. Booking or no bookings. Shouldnt let be turning away couples. Bad business. We live in the area. Thought this would have been a nice wee local. Unfortunately not..

Burger was raw in the middle and oozing fat. Poor quality meat used. No napkins and no staff to be found to ask.

I might have given this a 5 star as we had no complaints about the food but only noticed later that they had added a service charge to the bill which we hadn’t noticed. There were 4 of us and they added £8 service charge. Will not be visiting again ever!!

We were asked to preorder our lunch because we were a big group and still had to wait approx 40 mins for our food. Even then 2 of the ordered meals did not arrive and we had to request cutlery with which to eat. I had the butternut squash chilli which was very bland and it was clear the luke warm rice had been sat in a bowl for a long time before being turned out as it was bouncy. Most of the group ordered Coke or Diet Coke and they were brought to the table but the waitress didn’t know which were diet and which were standard. I would avoid this place - felt like it was staffed by a bunch of kids in their first job, on their first day and the food is well below average.

It was a colleague’s last day so a few of us came here for a farewell lunch as Philly’s is very handy for our Edinburgh Park office. The place had a good atmosphere and felt nicely busy for a Wednesday lunchtime. We all had tacos and all thought they were really tasty and a good size for lunch. Service was fine.

Ordered burger which was nice. Chilli dog which was tasteless and chicken wings as extra which were very good. In truth service and bar staff not up to scratch wouldn’t rush back . As part of deal was asked to pay 50p extra for rose wine ?

My friend had visited before and said the service was bad but as the only place in Edinburgh Park we thought we would give it another chance. Visited at lunchtime and wasn’t overly busy. We ordered drinks and soups, after 45 minutes the soup still hadn’t arrived , neither had any staff to check why we had no food. We told our waitress to cancel soup, they apologised and took something of our drinks bill. Will not be back that’s for sure and would avoid this place like the plague!

Came for a farewell dinner with work colleagues and experienced poor warm non-alcoholic beer, poor service, overpriced food and under flavoured taste. Colleagues had to wait and watch the rest of us eat while they waited for their food. When we requested condiments, we were brought empty ketchup and mayonnaise bottles. We were forced to sit in a tight corner picnic table with only 1 way to get out which forced everyone to slide out so one of can across the restaurant to grab our drinks by incompetent bar staff that don’t know the difference between a double and 2 separate drinks. By far the worse place I’ve ever eaten in all my years in Scotland. As I write this, I’ve been waiting 20 minutes to order my dessert and still no sign of the waiter. Other than this, I’ve had a great time with my colleagues.

We had a great team evening out in the garden. We had drinks and food and even when we requested to eat outside due to lovely weather nothing was to much trouble. The food was very good and I was very impressed with the service. Thank you.

Met my friend for breakfast, there were 3 other tables in the whole restaurant (it was very quiet) there was only one other order in the kitchen for 2 people who ordered 10 minutes before us. The food take 40 minutes to come - which is a longgggggg time considering all I ordered was 2 poached eggs on a toasted muffin and my friend ordered egg on toast. Was very disappointed as my coffee was cold by the time the food came. We could see into the kitchen and there were multiple people. I could have made our food quicker myself. Food was average tasting, was past hunger by the time we got it. Don’t think I’ll be back as who knows how long I will need to wait if it’s busy!!

Popped in to meet up with a work friend who is off on maternity. We waited a while For our drinks order to be taken and then it was another wait for the food order. The food was prompt coming out and it was very tasty. No one came to check that our food was ok and once our plates were cleared not one person came over to see if we needed anything else. We had to go to the bar and ask for our bill twice. It wasn’t very busy and the fact that there was a large table was no excuse. I’ve worked a room with more covers in myself and still managed to be attentive. So ladies, this is why you did not receive a tip.

Went with a friend for lunch on Saturday. We received a really friendly welcome by the manager. We weren't sure about the table but the manager offered to move us to make sure we were not in the sun. We both ordered burgers which were delicious and so well priced. The staff who served us were very friendly and attentive. We never felt rushed but alway knew that they were around should we need anything. I really do recommend you go because there is no wher else to eat in the Gyle that do good home cooked food, it's a little hidden gem and very much worth your while finding it. It's a few minutes walk from the roundabout at the garage. We will be back for breakfast soon and most definately lunch. Thank you to the manager (sorry I didn't get your name) for taking time out to chat with us. Due to his and the rest of the staffs professionalism and the quality of the food we will be back.

Philly is a great place to meet people either for coffee, lunch or dinner. Went with the team I am in for drinks and they treated us very well. Top notch meeting place.

We went for a business lunch as we thought we would give the place a try as other people at work gave it great reviews. We had the Philly cheesesteak and nachos and both weren’t great to be honest. The menu looked fantastic and I thought I would try the cheesesteak considering the name of the restaurant was Phillys, so I thought they must do an unreal Philly cheesesteak. It was very unusual compared to a traditional cheesesteak sandwich, it was served on seeded brown bread and it was more like pulled pork that was used instead of strips of steak. Wasn’t a massive fan, but the chips and salad on the side were lovely. I had a taste of the nachos as well and I these weren’t nice at all. The guacamole had a strange taste which didn’t taste anything like guacamole. The nacho crisps weren’t nice either and had a funny flavour.

I visited with my family whilst in the area on a short break. From the outside it looks so impressive and inviting. On entering to the front it looked like a deli stall (closed at the time of visiting), to the right is a bar that was hustling and busy and would sit nicely in a town centre bar/nightclub, to the left was tables quite randomly placed in what appeared to be a dance floor. I really don't think this place knows what it wants to be!

Went for a work lunch with friends and opted for the salad, however there was no salad, as we know it ! You are guided to the salad bar to make your choices & let them know what you’d like & then they bring it to your table. On offer there was a large bowl of pasta, two large bowls of couscous and a large bowl of potato salad and that was it ! No actual salad I.e. lettuce, leaves, tomatoes, cucumber, slaw, meats or cheeses ! Only four bowls of carbs

Tonight was my second visit to Phillys. My first visit was for drinks on a Friday evening after work. The bar was busy and there was a great atmosphere. There is a good selection of beers and cocktails and the hanging basket seats were fun to sit in.

This was my return visit following my previous report, and I have to say I was much more impressed. There were 3 of us, each having a burger and soft drink. Service was friendly and quick and the food was tasty.

My sister and I are both on maternity leave at the moment and are at the stage now where we are looking for places we can go for lunch, with parking or good public transport links, near enough home, spacious enough so if one of the babies were to have a wobbly they wouldn't necessarily upset all other diners and with good toilet/baby changing facilities but most importantly good food and drink. All seems a big ask but the new offering replacing the Ritz in the Gyle estate, Philly's has more than filled the brief. We hadn't heard much about it before today but took a gamble and are glad we did. The menu consists of main courses and deserts but my sister and I ordered a meze type dish to share as a starter. YUM! We followed it up with the camembert and red onion jam burger which must be up there as one of the best burgers in Edinburgh. The patties were clearly made in house and their artisan bun was very different to the usual brioche or sesame offerings you get elsewhere. The chips were great. Skin on, hot and fresh. Seems like a small ask to get nice hot fresh chips but this is often the let down in places offering basic but satisfying Scran so it was definitely a plus point today. Interestingly the little salad garnish kind of summed up how well these guys know their food. A beautiful selection of leaves laced with herbs and edible flowers gave us a very interesting surprise to enjoy. For afters we shared a slice of the very enticing Carmel popcorn cake, indeed all the cakes in their cabinet looked super appetizing. This was accompanied by a large mug of delicious creamy latte. The service was friendly and attentive and they seemed very appreciative that we enjoyed the food. They also have lunch deals and a deli counter open from 12-4. Definitely worth a visit, even just for coffee and cake to suss the place out. For my sister and I, we knew when we left that this would probably become our regular 'Ladies who Luncheon' destination. Hope to see the place succeed as it's great to have people who know what they are doing rewarded for their efforts.

Went here for lunch with a friend. Waiter who seen us to table was friendly. Sat for a few minutes then they took our order. All seems fine so far. 30 mins later still no food, queried with waiter said it would be a couple of mins. 7 mins later just had to walk out as our lunch hour was up.

Philly's was a great atmosphere with amazing decor. Stuart the manager was very accomodating and made sure we were looked after all night. The cocktails and gin selection is amazing, and the food tastes brilliant too. As a gluten intolerant customer, they were very accomodating towards me and made sure I had a nice meal. My friends also loved the other menu items. Would recommend for lunch, dinner or for drinks!

I had a freshly made Camembert beef burger that was 10 out of 10. I’ll definitely be going back soon and will be recommending Philly’s to family and friends.

My husband and I stumbled across Philly's today after our daughters swimming lesson.

15 of us went for lunch we had the order pre booked, as soon as we arrived until we left everything was spot on. No long waits , food was cooked fresh and a great variety of choices from pizza to salmon. Will be back.

"An Unexpected delight" sums this place up accurately for me, this place wasnt on my radar but it should have been!

Tried Philly's as our team work in the Lochside area and we wanted to try the "new ritz".

We were met by a friendly gentleman at the door (manager i think??) and shown to a lovely table by the bar, Lots of light and very comfy seats.

Lunchtime booking. Waited 20 minutes for drink order and 40 minutes for food. One steak ordered as medium had clearly been under the grill for the full 40 minutes. "Well done" just doesn't do it justice. However this was removed from bill (with thanks). Waiter's grasp of the menu was absolutely dreadful, we had to literally spell out the word "rare". Lemonade turned into tonic before being replaced with bitter lemon. A trip to the bar finally fixed this. Bar person very competent it should be noted.

Went for breakfast and it wasn’t great. We were sat for about 15mins with menus before anyone seen to us - we were the only customers in, the other table looked like it was the management sitting down having a meeting. Drinks took about 10 mins to get to our table and then It then took further 40 minutes for our breakfast to arrive. My partner had the full breakfast which he said was alright and I had avocado on toast with poached eggs. My eggs were so over cooked and my sliced avocado and toast was freezing as if it had just come out the fridge (toast included!) no check back was done to see how our breakfast was. Once we had finished, nobody came over and cleared our plates and we eventually had to go to the bar to pay as it felt like we had been forgotten about.
