My husband and I called in on a very wet October morning for coffee and stayed for lunch! We ate in the lovely club-style bar cum library, which was deserted (always a plus in these testing times!). Service excellent - efficient and friendly. My husband had a wonderfully presented vibrant beetroot risotto and I had a tasty burger - plus we shared a so so crumble. Good coffee. Pricey as you'd expect but not poor value. We'll return.

If you are looking for a peaceful, cosy, and luxurious getaway, this is the place to be. Probably the best hotel I have ever visited! I will of course be back. The staff went above and beyond to make our visit excellent. Myself and my mother stayed for the weekend and it was her birthday trip. We arrived in our incredibly clean room to find delicious macaroons waiting for us. Then we scurried downstairs. We were spoilt for choice for open fires. We had the lounge all to ourselves and sat with hot chocolate by the fire until dinner and felt incredibly cosy. I was able to sneak in a birthday cake I had made and the staff took care to keep it hidden from my mother until dinner time. After the most wonderful meal they offered us a cocktail to celebrate my mothers birthday and brought out my cake which they had jazzed up with fresh berries, and the word 'happy birthday' written in chocolate on a plate. My mum was over the moon. They were very kind, caring and accommodating and these little extras really made our trip. The grounds were beautiful, breakfasts and dinners delicious. Thank you so much everyone for making our trio so wonderful.

Only spent one night here, but it was fabulous. Newly renovated, the rooms were very luxurious with lots of nice touches. The lounges, of which there are several, had roaring log fires, and huge couches and armchairs. All the staff were very friendly and informative and seemed so enthusiastic about their positions in the new hotel and looking forward to all the changes to come. Great night followed by a good Scottish breakfast where nothing was too much trouble.

We used to visit this regularly before it was sold and closed for refurbishment. Were surprised that when it opened again the dog friendly policy was maintained and we have eaten there three times.Once just for a drink then another time for afternoon tea, and a bar snack of fish and chips. They charge the same for their fish and chips as many pubs and cafes, but the setting and quality of crockery, etc, set it apart. It was excellent, served with very good choice of leaf teas. The afternoon tea was very good, slightly lacking the wow factor, but everything was well made and tasty, excellent scones and jam.Our dogs were made welcome too. So it's good that despite the upgrade, we are still welcome as customers.

During a 3-day stay, we enjoyed excellent breakfasts and dinners at The Roxburghe Hotel. All choices we made for breakfast were prepared to taste and perfection. Service was a teeny bit slow on one morning, but we had no place to be, and that was fine. Dinner was a treat and we loved everything from appetizers to the decadent desserts. Unfortunately, we spent our days touring or we would have had time for afternoon tea! Highly recommended! 5-stars!

Picked up a deal for an overnight with 2 course dinner on itison for £179. The location of the hotel was nice with the main building set within its own grounds with wildlife running around, wee seen baby deer, grouse and some sort of raptor. Upon arrival we were shown to our room which was very traditionally styled if not a bit dated. The bed was extremely comfortable and the shower excellent. We had booked champagne afternoon tea, there must have been a mix-up as there was no champagne, all the items that comprised the afternoon tee were excellent however I felt personally it could have done with less sweet and more savoury items to balance it a bit better. We went for dinner at 7:30 and had a pre dinner drink, we had finished these around 8pm and found ourselves waiting to be seated. The young red haired maitre de was excellent, definitely someone with a bright future in the hospitality industry. We ordered a bottle of wine and a starter and main, I opted for the scallops and the steak, my wife for the cheese soufflé and the steak. The scallops were very nice, the cheese soufflé very underdone, my wife pointed this out to the waitress who just acknowledged it and took it away. The steak main was pretty poor, the slices of steak varied from medium-rare to well done and were pretty tough. We also say for around 10 minutes without wine as it's not left at your table, we had to ask and we had the bottle brought over. We decided to go for the cheese board which was very good although only came with 6 tiny crackers for 2 people. Breakfast was pretty average, the eggs benedict were not great at all and pretty tasteless. Upon checking out we were charged a supplement for the food as we ordered "a la carte" although no mention of this was made when we ordered the night before. Overall there were some great points about the hotel and some bits that could definitely be done with improving on.

How many places have you been to where you were greeted by three people at reception? The receptionist, who unlike in some places, seemed always to be at her desk, had our details all ready for my signature, a man acting as porter took our bags to our room, and a third young man took us on a tour of the public rooms on the ground floor, and then to our bedroom . Being shown around made a real impact, and made us feel welcome and "at home" for this, our first visit. The room, number 11, was excellent, with a useful small sitting area with an armchair and a desk. Pre dinner, a good range of white wine by the glass. A choice of different set price dinners worked well, especially as we could mix and match. I choose a South African red wine, and the helpful wine waiter ( from South Africa) politely and tactfully suggested a better one for only slightly greater cost , an excellent recommendation. There were log fires burning in a number of rooms. Great attention to detail throughout. The sort of place which makes you want to go back. The usual caveat in many old historic buildings that there is no lift, and those with mobility problems would not find the main bedrooms accessible. One can drive to the front door to unload, then go a short distance to the carpark.

Both main courses were delicious. The atmosphere was similar to that as being in church, but the only organ I could hear was my own heart beating! As foodies, my wife and I refuse to believe the once great Albert Roux would want to put his name on this establishment. It would be a great shame if he feels pride in this establishment. Went for dinner on recommendation of a local from Kelso, telling us the amazing price for a 3-3-3 seasonal weekly menu, so we thought it would be a no brainer to go and eat.All i can say is if you want to experience good food, this is not the place to go. Didn't complain at the time because we hate complaining in a restaurant, not wanting to spoil the other diners night. My wife opted to upgrade her starter to have the famous cheese soufflè, without doubt the worst dish i have ever had in my life, my cued salmon starter wasn't much better, fennel was tasteless, a puree and raw fennel that just tasted of water and to cover it u with an over vinegary salad dressing. Both main courses we had were poorly cooked, with my fish course having such an overpowering red wine sauce i couldnt taste anything else, felt like cooking from 1916 not 2016. My wifes sauce for her flat iron was exactly the same and she couldnt taste anything else either, all vegetables were over cooked also. However we went into the Dessert with high hopes of the chef winning us back. The Lemon Tart was indeed lovely, dish wasnt well balanced though, was overly sweet and my wifes creme brulee was pretty dismal. service was pretty shocking too but the young waiting staff were a delight. A bargain meal from a once 3 Michelin Starred Chef turned into daylight robbery, would have more happiness from a Subway. One thing that is crazy is the local who recommended the meal to us told us what he had, it might be a coincidence but they were the same dishes, cant have a seasonal weekly menu in August and October? it shows a chef that doesn't care and is trapped in the 70s. We will not be back. We do hope that this is the lowest point in Chez Roux.

Firstly I'd like to say that the Roxburghe Hotel is set in beautiful grounds and is a lovely old building. Our party actually don't "choose" to stay here, however we fish Lower Floors and are forced to stay here at unfortunately it's one of the rules that if you book the fishing, you have to stay at the hotel!!?? Anyway, I could write two thousand words on the service of the hotel, but I will spare you the agony. The staff are courteous, however the standards of service and etiquette that one would expect from a 4/5 star hotel are lacking. Such as bar service in the lounge - we quite often had to search the hotel to find a bar men, who then came to the bar to serve you, he would then charge you 25 pence per adult to bring the drinks to your table!!, (after we had spent ten min's of our time trying to find them!!) Also at breakfast, I opened the window as it was very hot, to briskly be told that other hotel residents would find it too cold and the window was promptly shut, we were pretty much the only people having breakfast, I felt like I had been told off and that the waiting staff were actually the guests!... Rooms are ok, however if I drink a cup of tea, it would be great if the tea bags were replaced the next day... Food is actually quite good and is one of the saving graces. Would I stay here out of choice?? No. Can they massivley improve the service and make it a good hotel? Possibly we shall see. Personally I'd stay in Kelso or at a small boutique hotel nearby if I were you.

We had pre booked an Afternoon Tea for 4 and were seated at the bottom of the stairs and next to the door to the garden. The seating was cramped and much to our dismay guests and staff kept wandering past us backwards and forwards into the garden. This did not in anyway make it a pleasant experience added together with all of the flies who also decided to visit us. The food was pleasant! I prefer savoury items but was disappointed to only receive 4 tiny savoury sandwiches the sweet selection was huge in comparison! The sweet selection comprised of 4 plain scones, 4 sweet scones, 4 chocolate ganache, 4 choix pastry, 4 lemon drizzle cake and we did take a box home with us. Honestly because of where we were seated I can't honestly say I did not enjoy the experience (I was told by others in the party not to ask to be moved) I'm sure if I had asked the staff would have obliged but surprised they did not offer as they clambered (literally!) over chairs to bring us our tea!It cost £7.00 for a glass of prosecco and £20 for the tea, the total for 2 was £54 and I can't honestly say I would not rush back.

I have to say that the food quality was excellent, cooking exemplary but portion size (and we are not big eaters) was just a bit niggardly. I requested that the salmon be served with a salad. I was very disappointed with the presentation. Although the leaves were from their garden (and tasted as good as my garden produce) slapping a bit of fish on a plate.... and a handful of leaves with no sense of presentation was a bit of a sad affair. We all looked at it.... then at the beautifully presented venison on the neighbouring plate and felt a little sad. The strawberries and cream were once more, top produce... but slapped on the plate... uncut .... with hulls in??? Sloppy and Lazy Chef... at those prices I think the effort might just have been more. Service was excellent and ambiance... as ever... Country house.

I booked this hotel through Expedia, where I selected 2 Double bed rooms. When we arrived at the hotel they only had 1 Double bed room and 1 single bed room, because they said they had a glitch with their system, which allowed more Double bed rooms to be booked than what they actually had. Due to this situation a had to sleep in a single bed room for one night. What bothered me the must about this situation was that they didn't said anything when we arrived, it kind of felt like they were trying to see if we "missed their error". Was until I went to the front desk and complaint that they apologize and looked for options to compensate me.They promised to give me a nicer room the next day, however when I went to the front desk, I noticed that they had me in the exact room I booked originally, hence there was no upgrade made! I had to complaint once again so that I could get my compensation. In summary, their pro-activeness was very poor and didn't seem to care about my experience with them. Now with regards to the rooms, the single bed room is incredibly small. One can't go from one end to the other without bumping into the furniture. The Double bed room had good space, however the double bed was in fact 2 single beds put together, which made it truly unconfortable. You were able to feel the separation between beds, moreover if you moved much, you might separate them and build a gap between them...The hotel overall is in a good location and is very close (50m) to the Princess Gardens and the Castle. If you can live with those type of beds, this hotel may be a good choice, but if you are looking for a good bed to rest after walking around all day, my suggestion is that you look elsewhere.

We spent one night here. The approach, grounds and building were simply lovely. As we entered the hotel a fire was roaring in the entranceway- a welcome greeting on a cold afternoon. We were shown to our room. Here is where the hotel gets a bit of a ding...there was no lift and a long two flights up a lovely stairway to our room. Normally there would be a bellman to help with the bags. But there was only the very nice woman at reception to assist and my husband would not have her carry the bags. So he had to tote our suitcases up the stairs. We ate dinner in the lounge rather than the restaurant. The lounge was a very nice library and a table was set up for us. Dinner was quite nice and very good. Service was very good. The other reason for only four stars, besides the bag issue, is my pet peeve- the bed. The bed was not horrid however it also was not great...it was merely OK. At a hotel of this caliber there simply is no reason for the bed to be OK. Breakfast was fine though the cappuccino machine was not working. All in all a good stay but not one deserving five stars.

Would have liked have stayed for dinner but as previously stated we had a prior engagement in Kelso, a taxi was organised for us promptly. After a peaceful nights sleep and delicious breakfast we had an early drive home spotting a deer in the park on our way. The Roux brothers recently took over management of The Roxburghe Hotel, a small Victorian Gothic country house near Kelso. The building, a former dower house, has been run by Roxburghe Estates as a hotel for many years and is popular with anglers who come to fish the Tweed. It's charming location, and period interiors provide a comfortable place to relax after a day on the river. The involvement of the Roux team has transformed the catering. The main dining room serves traditional french cuisine made with fresh local ingredients. The staff are friendly, and very efficient. The Roux wine list is comprehensive, and fairly priced, but if you are not on a budget the Duke of Roxburghe has added a selection of first growth claret from his private cellars. The library has been converted into a bar which stocks an excellent selection of whiskies, and serves meals from 12.00 to 22.00. The food is not cheap, but for the quality on offer represents good value. The Roxburghe hotel is one of the best places to enjoy old fashioned borders hospitality in a tranquil setting.

Our set evening meal of approximately £25 a head for 3 courses was excellent value considering just how good the food was, amazing presentation, professional waiters/waitresses and eye for detail. The only constructive feedback I would offer is to please play some background music whether light jazz or classical as the silence throughout the bar and restaurant caused our party of 8 to almost whisper throughout the evening. We all commented on the lack of ambience which could so easily be rectified with music. Other than that, we had an enjoyable evening.

I had visited for afternoon tea in July and what a treat, everything was beautifully laid out and the service and food was wonderful. Remembering what a wonderful afternoon I had I persuaded some other friends to visit again for afternoon tea. What a disappointment, the tea which the waitress very kindly poured for us was quite cool by the time our food arrived, the bread was 'wet' and the fillings not to the standard I had experienced previously, the only saving grace was the scones and clotted cream. The price was also a shock £21.65, it was £15 in July. I wish I had said something at the time but did not wish to embarrass my friends. I have no fault with the waiting staff as they were efficient and courteous. On the way home one of my friends commented it was o.k.! this was meant to be a treat but treat it was not.

We had not been for some months and were keen to see what progress had been made under the Roux banner. The food was really very good indeed. The service was terribly slow and iffy. The lad that served our wine just commenced to pour without offering the chance to taste. there was no attempt to say 'thank you goodnight come again'!Food represented fair value for the money but the service did not. There was some kind of dinner function elsewhere in the hotel which possibly caused the slowness.

My wife and I live 15 miles from this restaurant, and we last visited over 4 years ago, and the dining experience was ok, but not memorable. How things have changed. This restaurant has been overhauled by Michelle Roux, and he has laid his ideas very firmly in order to achieve a fine dining experience.Previously, my wife and I have dined on Queens grill on Cunard liners so we tend to compare and analyse other venues with this. We have also served senior members of our Royal family, so we feel we are well placed to judge a dining experience. My wife chose a twice baked cheese soufflé to start, and said it was the best she had ever tasted. Considering she has cooked the best cheese soufflé I'd ever tasted, this was some compliment. My lamb starter was also sensational, and my main of venison haunch was mouth watering. My wife's steak dinner was beautifully done.Enough to say the food was sensational, and the prime factor in fine dining, but fine dining is a mix of food, service, ambience all of which should amount to a 100% dining experience. It undoubtedly does. The service is spot on. None of the waiters are intrusive, and give attention when it's needed, and no more. They are ultra smart, and one indicator for me personally is a clean pair of heals, and all the staff did indeed have a clean pair of heals. This is indicative of high order and discipline which results in this discipline being carried through to all aspects of a top quality restaurant. After dinner, my wife and I retired to one of the lounges for coffee before we left for home, and this was a relaxing close to what was a memorable dining experience.oh.. Forgot to mention my delight at seeing waiters 'crumbling down' the dining tables.. Lovely touch..at last...The only minor point I have to offer is that my wine was decanted into a whiskey decanter but it hardly mattered.. Fine dining in the Scottish Borders... Magnifique Monsieur Roux...

This is a lovely looking building in fine grounds. The restaurant, which also serves the golf course and hotel, has a menu by Albert Roux. You are encouraged to book for half an hour earlier than when you want to eat and we enjoyed a gin and tonic with a couple od appetizers. The menu doesn't have loads on it but everything sounds great with an a la carte menu and a set menu available. The wine list is very extensive. We went for a richly flavoured crab bisque and a stunning soufflé, followed by guinea fowl and venison. Each dish made total sense and was beautifully balanced. We then shared a dessert and there was a closing surprise sweet. We then closed the evening with a couple of very fine whiskies. The staff are attentive and unfussy and the 10% service is justified, although it seems a bit naughty to add it to the whole bill and not just the food. The food is very fine and reasonably priced. The drinks certainly rack up the bill but the whole thing was an excellent evening

Wanted somewhere nice for Sunday lunch and booked ahead. A stunning building in a lovely location. Service good, food lovely, but slightly surprised that they didn't serve a traditional Sunday roast anywhere on the menu - I certainly wasn't expecting carvery, but most restaurants have a slightly tailored menu on a Sunday at lunchtime. What was offered was their standard lunchtime menun or a la carte. Don't think that this took away from our enjoyment though. It was very very quiet though, so wonder if I am alone in my thoughts?

Wow what a place. This is a large baronial hotel with a large fire roaring in the entrance hall fireplace. We had coffee in the drawing room which as just fabulous. The staff were so friendly and attentive. We asked for pot of coffee for 2 which came in a sterling silver coffee pot in which my husband and I got 3 cups each and was accomplished by some shortbread biscuits, expecting to pay over the odds for this was astounished when the bill was under £8 - bargain. It is certainly worth a visit, even if just to look at the portraits . Would certainly return here again...hopefully to stay overnight.

We checked into our courtyard room which was clean and inviting although not worth paying the extra money for an upgrade We then had a few drinks in the bar before getting ready for dinner, WOW the service and food at dinner was exceptional, staff polite and attentive throughout, a fantastic experience although let down by the lack of attention in the bar afterwards, no bar staff, had to ask for after dinner drinks and didn't seem that bothered after leaving the restaurant. Seemed as though they had got us out of the restaurant and forgot about us or just wanted us to retire to our rooms. We stayed for 2 nights and had dinner both nights and the bar experience was the same both nights after dinner, could of easily of been 5*An excellent venue for a quiet relaxing break but let down by the bar service after dinner

We have used this hotel many times in the past, but always in summer and have had enjoyable visits either for a drink, afternoon tea etc.As the hotel permits dogs in rooms, we assumed that in winter there would be a snug or somewhere indoors where you would be welcome with your pooch.Sadly no, outdoors only which isn't much fun in winter and anyway there were no outdoor tables even if you wanted to brave the elements. So the wooflers got a walk and we went elsewhere to eat..Pity, we really wanted to take my mum there next weekend, as she would enjoy it very much and being recently bereaved, it would have been a bit of a boost for her. But where we go the wooflers go, so we have booked Audela instead. If a tiny but very nice bistro like that can make us welcome you might expect a country house hotel to be able to.I guess we will go back in the summer, but you would have thought that it might be possible in a hotel of this size which accepts guests with dogs to accommodate them in a tiny corner. We had planned an overnight with the wooflers in the future, but if they are only welcome in the rooms, then it's hardly worth while. We're not expecting to be allowed into the dining room, but a drink at the bar isn't very much of an imposition.

Well as I sit at home after our stay at the Roxburghe, I look back at fond memories. My fiancée and I are getting married here in a few years and decided to spend a night. We stayed in the Bowmont Suite, and what a suite it is. As you enter the room from the private hallway you are greeted by the vast bed. This looks onto a lovely writing desk come dressing table. Then comes the lovely sofa and two arm chairs that surround the open fire. A well sized bathroom to the right, with his and hers sinks and a large bath\ shower. The restoration the hotel was as lovely as our room. A spacious lounge with roaring fire was a lovely place to spend a wet afternoon. The library bar for pre dinner drinks and canopies was both quiet and had a lovely atmosphere. This was our second time eating at the Roxburghe since Chef Roux has taken control of the kitchen. Our meal was perfect. The maître d' suggested wines for each coarse and his choices were perfect. After a fine meal, we headed back tomorrow room where the fire was set and just needed a match set it away. After a peaceful nights sleep we had an early break fast with a continental selection and a lovely menu of cooked breakfasts. Overall a brilliant weekend and we will enjoy many more before our wedding. Peter and Holly.

Another afternoon tea report (and another deal). Boiling hot day (yes really) so was impressed that water came within seconds (I didn't even have to ask) and was topped up several times. Sandwiches a bit short (2 small ones each plus 2 melba toast sort of things each) but given that there were also 2 small scones and 4 small cakes each can hardly complain about quantity. Nice enough sandwiches, excellent scones, the usual cute cakes (menu has a description). I am coming to realise that service is quite important to me and they were very attentive (but not overly so) so would happily go back and try something else (even without the deal). Nice touch to be given an "amuse bouche" which for us was a wee iced tea (lovely!) and also vast range of tea types to choose from.

Having spent a night with friends at this hotel I have to say he bedrooms were wonderful and the staff very warm and welcoming. Special thanks to Sarah for going above and beyond to make our stay extra special thanks to her exceptional hosting,The disappointment was the evening meal in the restaurant, high end dining it wasn't although one look at he prices we were charged suggested it should have been, Poor is the word that immediately comes to mind. The menu is poorly presented with too limited a choice, the portion sizes were a joke. Having seen nothing on the menu that appealed I asked if I could possible have some pasta and perhaps a sauce. I got a small bowl of craggy mess, which was solidifying as i awaited cutlery with which to attempt eating it. I was charged almost £18 for that! Outrageous and hence my rating the value as poor. . We should have known better as the restaurant was otherwise deserted, Given there are at least 3 very good places to eat in nearby Kelso which are much better priced This establishment needs to take a good look at what it is clearly not providing. I don't care how good the chef thinks he or she is. If they can't get customers over the door especially during the quieter months that should be screaming loudly at the management that something is wrong. My husband trained as a hotel manager and was not impressed with the restaurant side, what a lost business opportunity! Would I stay at this hotel again? Yes without hesitation I loved it. Would I eat in the restaurant again? Absolutely not. I'll take that business elsewhere,

Recently spent a night at the Roxburghe with my wife and friends. We had looked forward to this for quite some time and in truth the setting is absolutely beautiful the downstairs area is lovely and I really liked the availability of the rooms for a bit of relaxation. The bedroom was very comfortable and clean and the breakfast in the morning was excellent, served by two lovely girls who really couldn't have been any more pleasant and helpful. However, despite all of this the lasting impression I we have been left with is the attitude of the lady at reception both on arrival and departure. When we arrived she kept getting the rooms mixed up. She didn't have the decency to look at us as she spoke to us and when she took us to our room she told us nothing of the hotel and I have to say I questioned why she was actually there. That wasn't the worst, however, as when we checked out the following day she was nothing other than condescending to us as she explained our bill (once again, failing to even lift her gaze from her desk). First and last impressions are EXTREMELY important and having experienced them at the Roxburghe, I'm afraid we won't be back...

We saved up our pennies (we knew this would be an expensive treat) as we thought it would be nice to come here for our wedding anniversary meal - big mistake. Whilst the quality of the food was excellent, the portion size was desperate. The red deer main looked fine until my husband realised it was only three medium-sized medallions of deer atop the cabbage accompaniment; the other accompaniment - gnocchi - was three small pieces. My grilled lobster was delightful but it was fortunate it was a small lobster as there was nowhere to put the empty shells; plus this was the first time I have ever been served a lobster which the chef has not slightly cracked open upon prior to serving - I got delightfully spattered in lobster juice when I cracked open the first claw. The chips accompanying the lobster (which I gave to my husband to make up for the dearth of deer and vegetables) were extremely salty, as had been our whitebait starters. Given the scarcity of mains, we decided not to throw good money after bad so forewent dessert - even though we were both still rather hungry. This was a good move - the next door table had strawberries and ice-cream; this was a handful of strawberries and a very small scoop of ice-cream. Local strawberries at £7 ? I don't think so. There appeared to be no locals in the restaurant - we can understand why. This is high-end pricing which does not deliver on any front. And why does the chef insist in sending all food from the grill menu - mains and desserts - out on either wooden boards or slates ? He puts chips AND strawberries (not together obviously !) in the same small "pans" - washed in between one has to assume. I can see the reasoning behind lobster and chips or steak and chips on a board / in a pan. But strawberries and ice-cream ? Biscuits and cheese ?Someone needs to speak to the chef and inform him that nouvelle cuisine went out quite some time ago. Masterchef the Professionals might point him in the right direction. It's a few years since we were last year; it will be quite a few more before we return.

We stayed in this Hotel for a one night visit to Kelso (as we had done last year), but unfortunately this time we also chose to eat in the Hotel. HUGE MISTAKE !!! I think they have appointed a new Chef in the last 12 months and its clear that he thinks that high end dining means tiny portions and huge prices. We skipped the starters and went straight into a Mains course .... My wife's Salmon was good but at £25 not value for money, my Steak at £32, was slightly over-cooked, very undersized and absolutely not worth the cost.We then attempted to order Desserts which just ended up with a disagreement with a very surly waitress who was taking the food orders !! We queried why the Dessert choices were so limited - just 3 very strange combinations or Cheese and biscuits. We said to the waitress that it was the poorest selection that we had ever seen in a high end restaurant and that perhaps the Chef needs to consider a wider repertoire ? She then proceeded to give us a lecture about how magnificent the pastry chef was and did we know that ' he even makes his own crackers to accompany the Cheese' ....... Wow - big deal ! I have had better crackers from Waitrose (as you can guess we had the Cheese as the other choices were so underwhelming !!). I was then told that as the 'Duke' owns the Hotel he doesn't authorise the Chef to have too many choices on the menu ... if this is true then the owner should keep his opinions too himself and let the Chef run his own menu ???We also had breakfast the following day as that was part of the room package .... just ordered poached eggs and toast. If we hadn't been in a rush to leave the eggs would have gone straight back to the Kitchen !!!! This Hotel is attached to a Golf Course and it is no exaggeration to say that I could have easily played a full round of Golf with the Eggs they were so hard (my Wife ordered the same breakfast and hers were just as bad !).Co-incidentally at Breakfast I overheard another guest ask the waitress ......... "Is this a baby smoked kipper - did the Father get away ???" - she just nervously laughed and walked away without replying. I glanced at the kipper as we were passing the table and then understood his comment !?! If this had been sent out as a Sardine it would have still looked small !!!Overall VERY PRETENTIOUS Menu, very average cooking and wildly over-priced. Drive in to town and eat elsewhere - it's only 2 miles away !!!P.S. When checking out the next morning we were asked if all was OK ..... I replied 'not really' and the first comment from the receptionist ....... "was the food the problem ??" How Interesting - we clearly weren't the first people to comment on this !!!

We were treated by a couple friends to an anniversary dinner. We took drinks in the bar before dining, the bar is a charming room which set the whole ambience for the evening, attentive, smiley and welcoming staff. Often in these high end hotels you can be made to feel a little uncomfortable, this was certainly not our experience. We were taken through to the dining room and seated a large table ( which makes all the difference ). We were served an elegant and very tasty amuse-bouche along with a choice of fresh baked breads. All the starters at our table were devoured with high praise, my scallops were exceptional as was our friends white asparagus which was served with the chef shaving a fresh summer truffle at the table, pure theatre, love it.Mains at our table were halibut, pork belly and veal, again all devoured with the highest praise. I should add the samphire served with the pork belly was a great match.Three at our table chose the Peach Melba "1900" ( apparently different to 1872 ! ) I chose the local cheeses, again all went down a treat.Dinner was completed with a coffee in the sitting room, all in all a wonderful dining experience, one I will be repeating again soon. This is one of the more expensive restaurants in the Scottish Borders however the setting, service and food justify the extra expense.
