We called in to this pub for dinner and found the place quite dank, devoid of character and almost empty. The choice of beer on tap was unusual and none appealed to our broad taste. The two we did finally choose were not nice. For dinner we had the steak pie (soggy base) with mash, my wife the calamari (cheap, greasy batter) and a side salad (passable). Neither meal was worth the visit or the price and the service was droll. We would never return to this pub.

We only ate here but we can honestly say we will not return. As soon as we walked in there was a damp smell. We were greeted by a lad who could’ve presented himself a bit cleaner. I ordered calamari and the tomatoe and rocket salad. My husband order the pie. We were both very underwhelmed. I had to peel the batter off my calamari with oil dripping from the batter. It was actually quite disgusting that a chef thought that was ok to serve. I can get better than this from a fish n chip shop. The pie was only ok. My husband said it was like a manufactured pie you can buy anywhere. We are travelling around England and a kinda pub crawl experience. We are in Richmond for a few days and again in a few weeks for a few days, we will never return to this pub.

We have been coming here for a long time and have got to know some of the staff who are all great, they make us feel welcome and valued, nothing is too much trouble, we are also appreciative of how great they are with our dog , he gets so excited to come here lol. I haven't been in the hotel, I've only had some food and drinks, and the only things that impressed me were the garden and the very good service of the waitress, she's been very kind by bringing some water to my dog. The place is very nice, but the food needs some reviewing...is not difficult to have a proper Fish & chips if you want to...I've eaten better in fast foods...pity. For the rest is wonderful. The view, the Staff and the free parking, dog friendly as well.

Excellent location with free parking for customers. 3 dog friendly rooms on the ground floor looking on to courtyard. Decor is dated but clean and comfortable stay with coffee making facilities (kettle) and a small fridge which was very useful. Reasonable rates for this part of London. About a 20 minute walk to the Tube station with great links into London. Scenic River walk across the street. Our room was one of the family friendly rooms- a family room with a double and two single beds. Booking was easy, and Ana (owner) was very welcoming and helpful.

Went there for Mother's day lunch at 2pm and arrived around 1.50 They took our order straight away and then at 2.30 told us that there were no chicken wings, then 5 minutes later they came back and said the kitchen was overwhelmed and there would be no starters! So we waited for our roast and...and waited...when we asked they said they would go and see. By 3.10 we still had no food and so we left. Shocking service and absolutely no communication Appalled and upset that our day was ruined!

We arrived with our family of 8. The service to start with was very slow and the place was empty. My husband is gluten free and they had no specific gluten free food on menu and we had to explain what he could not eat. After bring in there fir over an hour our food eventually arrived. The 3 Fish & Chips were in a sorry state. There was more batter than fish and not overly hot. There were 3 Chlli Beans and Rice and they all arrived cold. They were reheated in microwave. There was 1 child's Macaroni Cheese with chips which was OK. Lastly there was one Veggie Burger and Chips . The Burger was inedible as it had been over microwaved. After some negotiation after our meal they only charged us £20. Make your own mind up whether to use this place. We do think at least they were fair with the charge.

I visited the Rose of York on Petersham Rd in Richmond, Surrey on Friday 8th July, to have an annual reunion lunch with with family members. We have used the establishment many times previously over the years & were always surprised at how quiet it was. We were often the only customers! Following our most recent experience, the reason for this has become abundantly clear! We arrived at 12.30pm to find the place deserted as usual. My cousin’s wife has severe mobility issues, & I asked the only person I could see; a “gentleman” lounging against the bar nursing a drink, if he worked there. He replied “yes”, with a stony stare. I asked him where the disabled toilets were, & he replied in the same unfriendly manner “over there”, pointing to a corridor some considerable distance away from the main entrance & bar area, & a challenge for someone with limited mobility to access. By the time we were ready to order our food, a second unsmiling individual had appeared behind the bar. The response to our request for menus left us (almost) speechless! We were told rudely & in the most hostile tone that the chef had gone to see a doctor as he had injured his leg. No apology, no offer of so much as a sandwich, & certainly no indication that our presence was welcome. When we asked how long the wait for food was likely to be, this ill mannered & ungracious young man merely shrugged, & said scathingly that it probably wouldn’t be before 3pm, if at all! We purchased drinks while we decided what to do, which unsurprisingly weren’t offered on the house as a conciliatory gesture. In a final desperate attempt to salvage our long awaited family reunion lunch, we asked if there were any other places to eat nearby. Our most ungenial host snapped out the names of a couple of local hostelries, in a manner which suggested he had been asked to decapitate himself! The expected humble apology for the inconvenience caused by the chef’s absence was clearly never going to materialise, & a smile & a few kind words were evidently also out of the question. In all our years of dining out we have never been subjected to such atrociously rude, offensive & unhelpful behaviour. Suffice to say, we shall not be visiting The Rose of York again, & would strongly advise anyone considering doing so against it! To the Fox & Duck to where we were forced to retire, & were welcomed with warmth, hospitality & excellent food, we offer our heartfelt gratitude!

Me and my son did not see the book and it would have been helpful if the bar staff would just tell you when your ordering if you drove in please sign the book. So please be careful they are not helpful and don't careless about there customers.

God. Looks like a down at heel, about to close Toby carvery . Fairly dirty inside with lots of dead flies everywhere and litter in the beer garden. I mean really depressing. Staff seemed nice with the exception of an older lady who clearly hates people but loves to tell you the rules. Awful experience. Also, what is wrong with room 9? Given how awful the pub is room 9 must be a very recent murder scene.

What a disappointment. Had been here with my dad about 10years ago and had pleasant enough memories. So when we walked past it I suggested giving it a try. The food is OK, but the customer service is terrible: a salad and a sandwich took nearly half an hour, kitchen doesn't open till 1pm and to top it all were delayed from paying while the barman played around with something with the chef. Such a shame, as reasonably priced and in a good location. But until they do something about it: avoid avoid avoid!

We visited the Rose of York on New Years day after a trip to Richmond Park. To be honest, there are much better pubs in the area in Richmond or out towards Ham. The food selection was poor and we were told there would be no more food served until 6pm (this was about 3:30pm). The drinks selection was even worse; wine was "red or white" and juices for the kids were out of tiny glass bottles. Pineapple being the only non Fizzy juice so they really don't cater for children. The worst was that although the pub car park was virtually empty (it being a public holiday), no member of staff thought to inform us that we needed to register our parking. I'd arrived with my 1, 3 and 5 year olds and none of us were wearing coats so it was pretty obvious we'd arrived by car. I've since had a parking charge notice from a private parking firm. Unbelievable that the pub even uses a private parking firm given it's out of town and too far to walk into the centre of Richmond anyways.

This pub is in a great location by the Thames and 5 of us headed there for lunch after a walk in nearby Richmond Park. It's a beautiful old pub and we entered with high hopes. Menu looked promising- traditional pub food, enty if choice. It was all downhill from there. Our food arrived an hour after we ordered it and came out slowly in dribs and drabs on cold plates so what started as lukewarm quickly became cold. The chips were described on menu as triple cooked- they looked and tasted as if they had barely been in an oven once. We asked for vinegar and mayonnaise. The chap went off to get it, only to come back saying they didn't have either. There was clearly mayo on my friend's club sandwich so they obviously just couldn't be bothered. Two of us had a very dry fish finger sandwich- soggy batter, overcooked fish and the menu said it came with tartar sauce. Which it didn't. What looked like reasonable value was actually very over-priced for the very poor quality. I imagine their microwave gets a lot of use. The lady did knock the price of the chips off the bill when we complained but that didn't make up for the fact that our lunch was very poor. There are hundreds of better places to eat in the area. Do yourself a favour and go to one of them instead.

Visited The Rose of York on 7th November with tables booked for 20 persons. We had been warned by someone that had recently eaten there that the service was poor but she advised that the food was good. Wrong! The service was worse than expected with the staff only venturing from behind the bar area to take our initial order and then dump cutlery in a heap on the tables, not once did anyone approach us to ask if everything was OK. They did manage to come out to advise that the kitchen was closing in 10 minutes if we wanted deserts, that was at 10 mins to 9 pm. My niece had to take everyone's orders and relay them to staff behind the bar. Unfortunately I didn't find out how bad the food had been until conversations that we had after leaving the restaurant, otherwise there would have been a lot of returned meals. Apart from only 1 portion of steak being available, examples of the complaints were that the chips were undercooked and cold, the pies were minuscule in size, ice cream was served without the sauce, etc, etc. The only meal that got a thumbs up was the vegetarian curry and the only other positive was the selection of ales available. Needless to say, none of our families will be visiting again.

Unfortunately everything seemed to be against them.Poor only due process welcome -had to get one of my guests to obtain my car reg no. ,as needed we were told ;yet why when the car park only had two other cars in it!The table that we requested was provided , yet it took 15/20 mins to be offered a drinks order. The carvery was most strange ,apart from not much left [and we had been told that a 2.15pm Sunday booking would be fine!] ,only really beef available ,and the Yorkshire pudding was COLD ,only warmed up by beef gravy .And after our group was served ,only one other individual was served, then that serving area had it's lighting /heating turned off.etc etc So sadly whilst historically liking this Carvery ,especially after a pre luncheon walk in Richmond Park ,this was a disaster especially as my daughter was treating me ahead of my birthday!

We visited the Rose of York yesterday for a roast dinner and I have to say I was totally shocked. We booked for 2pm and there was no roast beef left. They failed to mention this when we were paying. I was given 2 measly slices of dry, over cooked turkey, the same amount as they gave to my 7 year old son! My husband got twice the amount on his plate than I did, but we both paid the same price so that was extremely sexist! The gravy was like dirty dish water and tasteless. Gravy should be thick and full of flavour in my opinion. The cauliflower cheese was awful, with the cauliflower overcooked and the cheese sauce watery. The sauce didn't even taste of cheese. All in all the dinner was bland and definitely not up to the standard I was expecting. The chef looked dirty and unwashed and clearly has no idea how to cook a decent roast - he needs replacing! We definitely won't be going back!

We had lunch here Saturday afternoon. We sat outside and did have a river view - if you leant sideways and squinted through the houses! It was a nice enough garden area. The guy who served us was friendly and helpful. What was slightly odd was being told it was a mobile phone free zone. Fair enough. But when I then walked through the bar there were bar staff on their phones! I did make a comment but was ignored. When my husband bought this up with the guy who then bought us our food (same one who served us and seemingly doing all the work!) He shrugged as said they shouldnt be but do it all the time!
