After having tried a couple of others in town (that didn't allow dogs), we settled on the Rose & Crown - what a find! Welcomed with open arms by the Landlord - dog treats and water bowls by the doors. Sat with friends for lunch - a couple of very nice ales (from a super selection of both draught and bottled/cans - including one of my favourites - Beavertown Neck Oil) and a superb, tasty lunch. Decent menu and some unusual smaller bites, which may lure us back again very soon. All in all, this was a great find, both for the conviviality of the host and for the food & drink on offer. A definite "we'll be back"!

New landlord, Steve, has only been at the Rose and Crown for a few months, but has done wonders for a lovely pub that was crying out for a good landlord. He is a lovely, friendly bloke who has introduced fantastic food (sunday lunches are especially well-liked!) and a number of themed evenings, incuding a bingo night. Local people have really welcomed his relaunch and are coming back in numbers to enjoy the lovely surroundings, cask beer and food.

All in all not a bad meal but I think it has some way to go to compete with other places to eat in town. To start the place was freezing cold (why no fire), they had run out of some of the ingredients for two of the orders we requested (why not tell the customers what is left before they waste time choosing something you have run out of). My son's lasagne was burnt but my chilli was OK. I cannot speak for the rest of our party but I will not be rushing back.

Writing this on behalf of elderly parents. Visited lunchtime for a birthday treat. Had to wait over an hour for their meal which when arrived was very disappointing compared to a couple of weeks ago. People on the next table ordered steak pie, but when they took the pastry top off it had sprouts and veg with a small amount of meat. When the waitress cleared the plates she asked if everything was ok, they said it wasn't as the chips weren't cooked properly and the lasagne was no where near as good as their last visit. They didn't even get an apology and nothing was deducted from the bill. They left vowing never to return again , which is a shame as they were singing the new owners praises a few weeks ago, but today's visit has really put them off. My relatives even phoned me up when they got home as they were really upset and asked me to post this review.

Not sure what's happened to this place but the food is in need of serious improvement. The service was good and food arrived to the table quickly. The food when arrives however was very poor. The chilli con carne was watery, didn't contain a single kidney bean and was bland. No cumin, no flavour just heat, as if someone cooked mince in a pan and chucked some chilli powder on it. The chips appeared triple fried and were ok but there were burnt chips served. When going to pay, the bar staff noticed the chilli plates were full and asked how the food was. When the feedback was received, they simply apologised and that was that. Seriously gutted that the food was so poor. Will not return as other competitors in the area offer better food at the same price.

I last reviewed The Rose and Crown on 2 October 2019 and was impressed. Not this time. I personally reserved a table seven days in advance, specifying the time, the table and the number in my party. When my party arrived just in advance of the specified time they found that the table had been occupied by other customers, despite there being a Reserved sign on the table. When asked why these people had not been moved, a young barman, clearly embarrassed, said that he couldn't do that. He said that he would go into the back and speak to the manager. On his return he said that he would find us another table and offered us free drinks. This meant that the people who stole our table were not only served, but WE were made to wait until another table could be found. I should have expected that the manager would have come out of his office to resolve this issue, but he did not. With regard to the food, those who chose dishes other than the Christmas lunch enjoyed their food, those who chose the Christmas lunch were served an unappetizing mess, which was lukewarm at best (and then only in places) and the plates were cold. The vegetables arrived long after we had begun to eat; the waitress apologized and said she had forgotten. She had also forgotten the serving spoons. When I asked for some, the barman brought a dessert spoon, explaining that it was all he could find in the kitchen. At the end of the meal, no-one came to clear away the dishes or to ask if we wanted dessert or coffee. All in all, it was a most disappointing (and personally embarrassing, since I had recommended the venue to my friends) experience. I do not blame the staff, who are young, inexperienced and were under considerable pressure on a major event day. What they lack is thorough training and good leadership: the manager should have sorted out the reservation issue and led by example. He did not. Standards of customer service cannot be expected to improve if this is the norm. MrsCapricorn and I were considering having our Christmas meal at The Rose and Crown; however, we have now resolved to book elsewhere. My advice to you is to do likewise.

Called in to the Rose and Crown on Wednesday - pub fairly empty but we had been there for a drink on a Sunday lunchtime when it was packed and the reviews from the new owners looked pretty good. Menu was typical pub food and pretty cheap. I had a chicken and chorizo salad - very small pieces of both hiding under the lettuce - not good at all - it must have cost 10p in ingredients My wife had fish and chips which was overcooked very dry and the batter was very hard - terrible Our friends had the steak and ale pie which looked and tasted (so i was told) delicious and the pulled pork sandwich which was also excellent. So how good is it - well if I owned a cafe/restaurant/pub and a customer said that something wasn't great and explained why - I would knock it off the bill - but she was offered a dessert free of charge which wasn't really the point as nobody else was having a dessert. Pity really as we do eat out a lot and I would have loved to have given it 5 /5 but couldn't. Next time I'll order the pie:(

I popped into Otley for a pint this evening with some friends. This pub was the first one we came across and was absolutely dead (which should have said it all really), but we gave it a shot regardless. As soon as the lady at the bar began to pull my disappointingly flat pint of Landlord through what must have been the filthiest of lines, a swarm of fruit flies surrounded us and spent most of their time lingering around (and inside) our drinks. Enter this pub at your own risk, absolutely disgusting.

We were a little pressed for time as we were enroute to the nearby airport. Explained this to the landlady who steered us toward ordering the turkey roast of the day since it would be quick to serve, other meals all being cooked from scratch. Fair enough, and the meal was appetising and generously served. The pub itself is quaint and traditional and obviously popular with pensioners. The manner in which we were spoken to by the landlady was somewhat disrespectful and off-putting and unfortunately distracted from the overall experience.

Loudly replied I told you they wouldn't I had them Sussed out they wouldn't and gave us a dirty look. The menu looked nice , but thought as they wasn't serving food yet we would call back. I found this very ignorant because we was just about to say we will call back . All I can say you sussed us out wrong and jumped to conclusions . This pub is a rarity and should be treasured by the people of Otley. It offers good old fashioned value for money and food to match. We visited with some trepidation having read an adverse review. However my fear was sidelined by the thoughts of the steak and kidney pudding. We were welcomed by the landlady who said they were fully booked but she would make sure we had a table in ten minutes. It was well worth the short delay. The food was very good with the steak and kidney bordering on legendary. There was enough food for even the heartiest appetite. The landlady seems to have a very good rapport with all her regulars and the barman acted as a taxi organiser in between all his other duties. I sat down in the corner of the pub, not causing any fuss, only for the landlady to hunt me down and have a go at me in front of all my friends, saying she had been watching me all night and that if I didn't leave or buy a drink she would get the bouncer. If none of us were drinking I could understand her frustration but I felt picked on for being responsible and as a result she not only lost my future custom but the custom of my 5 friends. This pub serves huge portions and a lot gets wasted. Unfortunately the chips are the spicy variety rather than ordinary home cooked chips. One portion is enough for three people. The place is extremely worn and in need of a huge makeover. Drinks very expensive: my sister nearly passed out at £2.50 for a coke which is a lot dearer than pubs in her area. Service rather haphazard and lukewarm depending on who serves. Reasonable prices on food but smaller portions at half price would be better.

The food is excellent and the portions are huge (we don't need to eat again for the rest of the day, even having just sandwiches for lunch!). Home cooking takes a bit longer so be prepared for a short wait but it is definitely worth it. The atmosphere is quiet and the pub tends to be a favorite of 'older' customers but it is friendly, clean, and the food and service are superb. Sat down and a woman sauntered over, like we were an inconvenience, and took out order after 10 minutes and being prompted. Not a good start. The ambience was bleak. The food arrived after 15-20 mins and portions were huge (far too big) and could not all be eaten. The food was excellent. On wanting to pay we had to seek somebody out again and was informed that they were no longer part of the discount club so we ended up paying full price- not happy as this is one of the reasons we went: no apology, explanation or anything either. Shame they could not be bothered to remove thir name from the list of participating businesses; we rang up the promoter to inform them and they said they had not been told the pub wanted to be removed from the list either!! Getting people in under false pretences- unsurprising really as the place was empty the entire time, but a shame as the food was excellent. Service and a welcoming atmosphere is sadly lacking.

There seem to be polarised views on this pub and I can only surmise it isn't what some people are looking for. We are occasional visitors to the area and I would agree it attracts mostly an older crowd as it offers a traditional pub meal at great prices. It is downright wrong to say it isn't clean. Yes, it is an older establishment but the substantial amount of brass is polished to gleaming - that includes to footrest around the bar. The toilets are again, old fashioned but very clean. All around the windows are very clean - showing whoever is cleaning has an attention to detail. I went in a popular tea shop in the same town on the same day and around the windows in the ladies looked like they hadn't been cleaned for two years. I would have absolutely no worries about cleanliness in the Rose and Crown and say quite the opposite - it is spotless. The roast pork baguettes are fabulous and the chips are some of the best. I would love to have this pub as my local and suggest the detractors are ignored. I put 4 on service as it has a semi-table service so definitely more like a pub than a restaurant.

After avoiding this pub for some time, I thought I'd give it another go. Sadly, it was like groundhog day with the same small selection of desperate-looking customers, a miserable landlady and very tired decor. The food was cheap and edible so I can see why it attracts the small number of pensioners at the prices. But why has such a lovely building been allowed to deteriorate like this? Time for a big change !

We booked for six people , four people had the beef, one had the lamb and one had the steak and kidney pie, We all agreed that it was one of the best Sunday dinners we had had for a long time. My Dad said it was the best steak and kidney he has ever had and the meal was a celebration for his 76th birthday. The landlady was very good . The meal was so filling , a pity really as the puddings looked fantastic and we had no room for them. never mind i know we will be going back. Thank you for looking after us so well .

Always return here on a visit to Otley to see family. Bar staff are friendly and welcoming, food is delicious whatever you order. This time we both had roast lamb which was tender with lovely homemade mint sauce. Have sampled a lot of meals here, sandwiches are HUGE with an excellent range of salads, chips are the best in Otley and pies/lasagne/stroganoff better than any other pub around. I would highly recommend a visit to the Rose and crown, you will not leave hungry or unsatisfied! bravo!

What a lovely venue to have our Xmas in july meal. There was 16 of us (so quite a large party to have everything ready at the same time) all the food was presented beautifully. We did receive some funny looks from the other customers as we pulled crackers and put on our paper hats.

Decided to try something new so headed to otley! What a gorgeous pub! Ordered pâté starter and then I ordered mixed grill and my friend the steak and kidney pie. Well, what a feast we were presented with! The pâté come with 2 generous slabs and 6 triangles of toast! This alone filled me up. Then out came the mains, the steak and kidney pie filled the plate there was no skimping on filling! My mixed grill was lovely although I felt the burger was somewhat out of place. All in all a lovely visit

As a regular for three years plus I will never set foot in this pub while ever the current management are in place. They are rude and disrespectful.

Called in mid-week lunchtime. Chose the stew and dumplings plus we had an extra portion of chips. Stew was delicious and no skimping on the meat. Turned out quite a substantial lunch and didn't really need the chips. Very nice.

I have never been so offended by anyone in my life, as soon as i opened my mouth and the owner heard my Scottish accent i was made to feel so uncomfortable that i left the drink i ordered and walked out! RUDE does not even come close i will not be revisiting or recommending if your Scottish don't go to this pub

We had just arrived in Otley after a long walk. We could not get into some of the other pubs so settled in at the Rose and Crown. Very welcoming with a good choice of food. Excellent range of beers. The waitress explained that the meals we ordered may take a bit longer than normal but as we were enjoying the drinks it did not matter. Two of us ordered the lemon chicken and the others ordered the roast beef. When the meals arrived there was more than enough to satisfy our hunger. The delicious lemon chicken had been prepared from fresh ingredients (hence the slight delay) and came perfectly presented. The accompanying chips were perfectly cooked. The roast beef came with freshly prepared vegetables. Altogether a well above average pub meal.

It should have been packed on market day in Otley, but worryingly quietThe ambiance was subdued with only a couple of men at the bar.The interior was clean but without character, no doubt the lack of customers accounted for some of this. The bar meals were surprisingly good. obviously not pre-frozen. i particularly liked the Chilli Con Carney..Could be a real find with a little effort.

Popped in for a bit of lunch. All I can say is " amazing!". Now sat in a total food coma having eaten more cheese in one sitting than is medically advised. Went for the share starter of camembert with rosemary and sourdough bread.... Beautiful. Followed by Halloumi fries, Chilli and honey fried chicken, and chorizo sausages from the bar snack menu.... Wow! Good size to share and all very tasty. Will definitely be going again to try more dishes. All the staff are lovely and friendly. Robyn our server and Mikey the chef 5*

We attended last week and really enjoyed it, but unfortunately, today was not the same. The food was great, as was the lad on the carvery but he was on his own and this meant he had to replace the meat (twice) himself whilst there was a big lunchtime queue. There were plenty of staff working and it was nice to have a clean table to sit at but it would have been nice for someone to check in on the carvery, rotate the veg and get any replacement meats prior to them running out completely. The roast potatoes were rock hard but it was more an issue with the unnecessary carvery wait. I would have scored less today but as last week was so good, I went with 4. We will definitely attend again and just chalk today off as unfortunate.

Excellent food and great choice. Suggest you book ahead. For the "top" meals they are between £25 and £30 each. I had a mixed fish dish which was excellent.
