Abysmal service, food was awful. Full of old people, the waitress dropped my chips so had to wait ages, she brought fresh ones out when everyone had finished eating. The ham&Eggs were not nice the meat was tainted the eggs hard. None of our main courses were good. I got my meal refunded, I should think so too. Overpriced tacky place. Avoid

I had heard good reviews about the Rose Cottage since it had changed hands. I had not been for years. However, I have to report that I was totally disappointed. We ordered the roast beef lunch, this came with mash, parsnips, yorkshire pudding, gravy, broccoli, carrots and green beans and 2 roast potatoes. However, overall this was very disappoining for £18.50 and not at all worth the money. The beef, mash, parsnips, roasties and green beans were fine - but the rest was not. We also ordered some stuffing - for an extra £4. This was also hugely disappointing. The yorkshire pudding were burnt, and too crisp to be edible. The broccoli was severely undercooked. The stuffing was rock hard and once again inedible. I did feedback about the yorkshire pudding being not very nice, and they did apologise. I will not be returning. Also - the attentiveness of the staff was lacking - I requested extra gravy, and it took me a long time to try to catch someone's eye. No one asked if we required any further drinks, so the table service I felt was not adequate, which was surprising given that the place was only half full. In addition, the ladies toilets were also inadequate - one was out of order, the other functioning but one had no toilet paper in. I did tell the staff upon leaving. However on the positive - the decor is pleasing to the eye, done in an Alice in Wonderland themed style - and the overall ambience of the pub is pleasant. It was just a shame about the food. I am sorry Rose Cottage but overall a disappointing experience - I think they need to visit the Fox at Kirton to see how real food and service is done.

In the area for a weekend break, after a long walk round Rufford Abbey we stopped in for a late lunch. Quirky cutesy decor themed on Alice in Wonderland, busy but friendly atmosphere. Super dog friendly and the food was just divine. You could tell it was all fresh, home made and I have a particularly unusual allergy that I only needed to tell our server once and when a different server brought condiments and sauces to the table, he had already checked which ones I could safely have. Really well priced for such quality. Highly recommend if you’re ever in the area.

Went here for mother's day roast dinner. Bang average and we'll over priced. £28:50 for 2 courses. Our 'crackled pork' came without crackling - that's an extra £1:50! The lincoln sausage and apple stuffing didn't appear. The waiter said he'd not seen it all day. No offer of refund. Cauliflower cheese at £4:50 was poor quality. Very hard and hardly any cheese. Had better roasts at a Harvester.

Food was terrible. Looks nice but the fish goujon butty was dry af and the fish was undercooked. My partner had the vegan wellington. The veg was undercooked and the pie was pre-made which for the price point was quite poor. Staff friendly, and very attentive so we still tipped. And to top it off for the full experience it was like eatin in a dog kennel. One table had two puppies running around on the table. Another family came in with a pack of five dogs that wouldnt stop barking at each other. It was a bloody disgrace. Never again.

My vegetarian friend said her only complaint about the vegan sausage and mash was that she didn’t want to stop eating it. Service is wonderful. Kind, intelligent, personable staff who are brilliant at customer service. Nothing is too much trouble, and they always have time for a chat and a joke. Sat 01/02/25 had table for four. Enjoyed a good night. Premises busy - just about every table occupied including group celebrating 40th birthday. Staff efficient and service good. Comprehensive menu - would cater for most tastes. Staff on the ball - asked us about potential allergies. We did three courses: 3 × soup and one garlic mushroom followed by: one crispy belly pork; one liver with mash and two lamb shank shepherds pies. Sweets: sticky toffee pudding, crumble of the day (apple) and two cheesecake. The sticky toffee pudding and crumble came with large jugs of custard. All portions were of a good size. Bill came to £160 including drinks - reasonable given recent pressures from Employer's National Insurance and minimum wage rises. All well fed and happy. Observations: whilst I thought the soup very good there was a comment it was a bit 'peppery'; crackling on 'crisp' belly pork was hard but not crispy and despite thick fat layer (of course it's belly pork!) the meat was good; topping on crumble a bit sparse although there was a generous portion of apples and loads of custard. Overall an enjoyable meal and worth the visit. Large car park too! We'll definitely go again.

Just an all-round average experience, unfortunately. Restaurant was pretty quiet and servers were running round at manic pace, yet still it took a while to take our drinks order then even longer to bring them. Food came fairly quickly and was OK but just lacked a bit of care and attention, and the side veg were in all honesty inedible – steamed (or possibly even boiled) until they had absolutely no flavour or texture and completely unseasoned. We asked for the bill which came pretty quickly but then the server just never came back to take payment, despite it saying on the receipt you should pay your server. After about quarter of an hour we gave up waiting and went up to find someone at the bar (who to be fair was super friendly and cheerful). The whole operation just needs a bit more care and attention.

I visited with family for Sunday roast. I have to say the food was below average and the portions were tiny. £16.95 for a few small slices of nice pork and two tiny pieces of crackling, one was burnt. I couldn't find the mash( it was hidden underneath). 2 small roasted potatoes( not crispy). The smallest amount of rock hard vegetables (laughable). Also no parsnips which should have been on my plate.Large Yorkshire pudding which was there to make the plate look full (tasted like cardboard). Other family members had tough beef. Some food was under cooked and some over cooked. Table was sloping wood panels causing drinks to slide off. I very rarely cook at home but I have cooked a better Sunday roast. On the plus side the staff were friendly & it's a nice pub. Fortunately this is not local to me, my local serves gorgeous sunday roast £4 cheaper per person. Another average pub portraying it's gastro. Disappointing experience.

Boxing Day let this place down. We booked here after coming on numerous occasions when it’s been exceptional. Unfortunately, the food quality wasn’t great. I wouldn’t recommend the Christmas Fayre menu. Soup was cold, sent back to be reheated. Main course, roast potatoes you could break a window, lamb shank was over cooked. The cod I’m convinced was a child’s portion and was dry as owt. When we complained, we got a rather cold reception from the lady greeting you. “You ate them”, yes we did after waiting over an hour between the starter and main we were hungry and being honest wanted to crack on with the day. Didn’t have time to repeatedly send food back to the kitchen, especially after the starter being cold. We tried Boxing Day as a tester for Christmas Day 2025, but after this experience were in doubt. To replay to the owner below as it doesn’t allow this.. On arrival we said we’re early, but we were happy to wait. You didn’t explain you was busy (as you wasn’t). Nobody came over to ask if everything was ok, we had to flag a member of staff to inform them the soup was cold. We then waited an hour for the main, again had to chase with a member of staff. Mains came out, nobody asked if everything was ok. As I said above, we ate it as we were hungry and wanted to get on with the day. The lady on the front desk was very cold, argumentative. Explaining she had a long day with a lot of people complaining. The reply below highlights this. Taken the assumption we were after some sort of refund. Nobody said this, I’m highlighting issues for anyone considering booking in the future.

We booked a small family Sunday lunch in memory of a family member who had recently passed away after we had spread his ashes... It was meant to be special but unfortunately it was far from it , firstly on booking i was asked for five pound per person deposit (3 little children and 4 adults) , Yes its very pretty inside and done out like Alice in Wonderland ..... Unfortunately at the end i felt like we had gone down the rabbit hole !!! ..The kids had basic chicken nuggets , chips and beans , we had three starters which were ok , nothing spectacular, the main course was 1 lamb and 3 pork roast dinners with extra cauliflower cheese ... i hate to say this but ive had better dinners in a pub chain (i later found out that Rose Cottage is a Marstons pub , ! ) The kids had ice cream and adults had desserts ... We all had soft drinks as we were driving, When the bill came i was shocked...... £208 !!!! Yes you read it right £208 ! When i checked the receipt later i found that they had omitted to refund me the £35 deposit which made the meal for four adults and three kids a whopping £243 !!! Now come on this place is hardly Gordon Ramseys restaurant , i think they are taking the "proverbial" Before i continue i must say that at that price i would expect tablecloths, not a wooden table wiped down with a bottle of cleaner and a cloth, also i think cheap paper napkins and the knife and fork on top of the napkins once again rings of the pub chain ! Also the cauliflower and broccoli was so hard you couldnt cut it with a knife so thats why the majority of it was left uneaten , i have worked in the hotel industry for many years in South Yorkshire and i know the difference between Al Dente and raw ... Nobody came to check on our meals so when the plates were collected i mentioned to the waiter that the veg was rock hard .... end of ! Nobody came to see us and certainly no compensation was forthcoming ... When i got home i rang Rose Cottage re the refund of the deposit , the young lady told me that if i give my bank details she would make sure it went into my bank within five working days , if it didnt then i was to ring her back......Youve guessed it ! .. It never materialised so i rang again this morning only to be told that as its a Martstons pub they have to request that Marstons refund me !! I told her i would come to Rose Cottage in person to get my refund (I'm on a mission now !) the lady told me that i still could not have it because its got to come from Marstons !!!!! Give it a few more days she said, i told her i should not have to go through all this , to which she did agree but obviously Marstons have the final word... The moral of this story is that if unfortunately you book a largish party in for Sunday lunch and they ask for a deposit please dont leave the premises without your deposit being refunded, also i should add that its very expensive for what you get ...

They also have a good selection of non alcoholic drinks, not just your usual soft drinks. We visited whilst staying at center parcs which is just a short drive or 30 or so mins walk away. I could have been really bad here and given a 1 star but our starter was really good! But unfortunately my partner was served the wrong burger to what she actually ordered and when she finally got her original order the burger was raw! The chips that came with it was raw! Which then put me off my burger the lady who dealt with this issue was lovely and took the burger off the bill but in my opinion we should have had more off the bill because apart from the nice starter the overall experience which was our first wasn’t a very good one at all…. And to see the staff in the kitchen laughing and joking was a bit of a joke especially if there serving raw burgers! I really do hope the lady gave the cook a roasting because cooking a burger is simple! And not checking it before sending it out is just not acceptable there is no excuse anyone can say back to this review!

Well I had the best ever scallops with black pudding bonbons cooked to perfection my wife enjoyed her starter also .we had our grandson with use aged 5 and the lovely waitress serving us was very kind and friendly towards us and made our grandson very happy chatting to him (thankyou you made his day). The main meal again this was so good teriyaki beef with steamed rice chillies spring onion and sesame seeds everything was fresh and tender it was amazing .my wife had chicken mushrooms in a sauce with lots of fresh vegetables she also said it was beautiful. Now my Grandson is going through that stage I don't like this and that but picked sausage mash and peas it was a big plate of food and he finished the plate saying it was really nice . Now I love profiteroles but fail to get nice ones in restaurants they come shop bought with tgat fake cream and a horrible sweet sauce but these came home made proper fresh cream and a real chocolate drizzle absolutely delicious. The evening was made extra special due to the young lady serving us taking time to chat to us and our grandson making us feel very comfortable on our holidays ❤️

Chanced getting a table for 2 on a Friday evening and we were smoothly welcomed and offered a table. I really liked that we were warned it was near a large table so we could make an informed decision. It really wasn’t noisy and there was distance between each table. Service was good, food (duck) was beautifully cooked and delicious. Personally I’d have liked some greens but the carrots were super tasty. Parsnips were very hard - taking al dante a step too far. Toffee pudding was a little dry and very large. Otherwise a great meal. Thank you. We’ll be back.

Lovely place - great food-.met with our family and they were very helpful. They even allowed dogs, which helped us out. The only issue we had was 1 dog was very very yappy, we would have hoped that a gentle reminder to the dog owner that people are still eating, and wanting to hear each other! Having said this the food was still lovely and the atmosphere and theme of Alice’s secret garden was sweet! Thanks

What a great place. The staff are warm and friendly and take the time to check on you, even when they are really busy. Nothing is too much trouble. We have visited several times now taking a table in the dog friendly area. The menu is varied, so something for every one, and the food is great, and also reasonably priced. We have always had a great experience, we look forward to our next visit. Fantastic to have something this good so close to home.

We arrived for lunch on Tuesday ready for a walk in Sherwood Forest. Beautiful building, lovely atmosphere and fantastic service. Thank you so much! More importantly, the food ….. I had the scallops and black pudding bon bon starter as a main. Honestly one of the best plates of food that I’ve ever had!! My husband had the gammon steak and thoroughly enjoyed this too. I just wish we lived closer as I’d have that scallop dish twice a week every week xx

Lovely pub with very friendly staff. The meal was great with my wife ordering the vegan mushroom risotto and garlic bread (also vegan), I had the fish and chips. Both meals were very nice and good size portions. The puddings were also very good again with a vegan option. Not too far from us so will definitely become a regular meal out.

Food tasteless '(salmon teriyaki and rice) Never had such a tasteless meal in my life no one checked to ask if all ok. Was offered another meal after asking for more sauce then still couldn’t eat meal, gone cold by then! Told policy was not to give refunds after being told that new menu tomorrow and the salmon meal wouldn’t be on it! Disgusting wouldn’t recommend and not go again!

Weird little place, with strange decoration. The food was average at best, chips were not cooked properly, flies all over the place and bugs on the walls! (We have pictures!) Not somewhere I would recommend or go back to.

I had the vegan risotto which was dry and tasteless. My friend has the risotto which was heavy in oil. Neither of us could eat it. Mine came out with a portion a third less of hers and I had no garlic bread. The kitchen made me some more, but the garlic bread was so garlic it was inedible. The only plant milk they had was almond, which does really work well in any hot drinks. So I didn't have one. They took the risotto of the bill, and were very nice. Out of four meals, no one said they'd go back.

I'm very critical when it comes to eating out, I have celiac too which can make eating out a bit more of a challenge. Nicki and the staff at Rose Cottage were very accommodating and really helpful when it came to allergens. The environment is warm and welcoming. The food was absolutely delicious, everyone enjoyed their meal and all would definitely go back again. Thanks!

This is such a lovely place. Right in the craft centre, you can sit in the cafe, in the covered courtyard or outside. Dogs aren't allowed in so a chilly or hot day might put people off but it's a lovely place to stop and have lunch while visiting the craft shops .

Need to tidy up outside. Weeds everywhere and generally scruffy. Car park at the back is very messy and there is a smoking area with an assortment of seats for staff on their fag break at the side. The front door is very scratched. Gets better once you are inside. Staff friendly. Just needs more TLC and effort.
