The Rose and Crown Eglwysilan in Caerphilly

First time visit for Sunday lunch. Really poor choice and NO starter which I thought was a bit strange as I personally would rather have a starter than desert. I opted for beef, there was only 3 choices and one of those were vegetarian. The food was lovely and nice to have mashed potato on a dinner for a change. Staff were attentive and very pleasant. Surroundings were lovely.

Need to up grade your menu ,won’t be back for meal anytime soon, Not cheap ,roads not great from Pontypridd area, you have to be very careful. Staff were lovely and friendly,sorry didn’t like your menu choices not much on there?..

Been here a few times now over the past few months the staff are always friendly and approachable and the food has always been lovely! Very family friendly with Beautiful surroundings and spotlessly clean! Will be returning soon!!

Called in on a busy Saturday afternoon for lunch with my daughter, the pub itself is in a beautiful location and the interior is absolutely stunning. I had a club sandwich with fries as only wanted something light to eat and It was delicious. Service was faultless can’t wait to return. Would highly recommend.

Visited early evening. Food was fresh and well cooked . Fish was crispy . Well run , not a huge menu but understandable in these difficult times , definitely worth visiting . Lovely garden to enjoy .

A disappointing return for Sunday Lunch. Have been to the pub over a number or years but this visit was both good and bad. Whilst the food was tasty, the beef nice and tender, the size of the serving left a lot to be desired - one small to medium slice of beef, dessert spoon of mash soft Yorkshire pudding, a few carrots, broccoli, a small floret of cauliflower, peas an two roasties all ready served up on a plate. Just not enough food. There was not on option offered for starters and whilst there was a choice of four meats surprised to see two for poultry (where was the Lamb), also as we were the last sitting only beef or turkey available; whilst I accept the late sitting my choice would not expect meats to run out perhaps even more so given it was Father’s Day. Would suggest you need to add starters to the menu, look at the portion sizes and put the vegetables in dishes for self serving. Overall the meal was okay but nothing to outshine other pubs in the Caerphilly/ Pontypridd area, wont be rushing back.

This great pub never fails to deliver. Good food and drink, friendly staff and great service. Tucked away up the hill with lovely views.

A group us visited to celebrate a few birthdays on bank holiday sunday. We had pre-booked 2 tables and the rules around COVID were explained to us when we arrived. The system in place for ordering drinks was very straightforward and waiting staff did a great job on a very busy day. Good to see the outdoor area full while everyone stuck to the rules in place. Will be going back up there very soon 👍

Found this remote pub/restaurant on Searchforsites as a "Motorhome Stopover". No facilities but a safe environment. Staff welcoming and friendly. Beer was well kept. The Sunday Lunch was excellent. I would certainly chance the very narrow lanes and visit again.

Amazing staff and the best freshly cooked pub food I’ve ever had! Home cooked peppercorn sauce was amazing! 10/10 for me! Will definitely be going back!

Me and my husband havnt had a date night in a long time.This pub has been a family local for a long time and we was looking foward to spending our evening here. Under new management aswell always nice to see what they'd done with the place. Well what can I say looks amazing now with a lovely atmosphere. We were seating and asked for our drinks order straight away. Considering there was a 30th birthday meal food was surprisingly quick. Our food was delicious homemade halloumi fries were to die for. As we finished our meal we over heard a couple getting quite ratty with the young waitress over their dessert. (The staff are young and obviously still learning ) This couple was very rude to this young girl. This made a scene which is not nice when your trying to have a nice night. I then heard the young girl was in tears. I hope shes ok? Every table noticed the attitude and rudeness of these men and were disgusted by it. 1 young lady certainly made them aware of this. In my opinion if you have a problem speak to management do not take it out on their staff they're just doing their job. Anyhow this pub/restaurant is a beautiful place and is worth a visit. Will be back soon ( might bring the kids next time lol )

Visited here with my family for a birthday meal. It really didn't disappoint. The food was lovely, service was incredible and the whole layout was fantastic. Everything was so clean and I felt very safe. Will definitely be coming back soon. Well done guys ☺

Since the pub re-opened in May I have visited with my family on quite a few occasions sampling lunch, evening meals and Sunday roast and I cannot fault the service, food and drinks. We are slowly working our way through the menu 😆 Considering how testing times have been for the hospitality sector and with tough covid guidelines to follow I cannot fault with how the pub has re-opened. Looking forward to my next visit. Hats off to all the staff and chef 👏

Before lockdown, this was a favourite local pub of ours. We were so looking forward to returning post lockdown and supporting this great venue. Sadly, new management and staff have turned this once fantastic place into a bland and lacklustre experience. The menu and prentation of the food is sadly now very basic. The waitressing staff, although pleasant, were very slow and inexperienced. Our starters arrived at our table worryingly quick. I know I shouldn't complain about speedy service, but when food comes out in less than 5 minutes, I do wonder if its been cooked fresh to order. It was edible, but nothing spectacular. Our steaks for main course were delicious, but the chips were undercooked and no effort had gone into the presentation. The main problem came with dessert. Firstly we had to wait 20 minutes after our main course. We were never offered a dessert menu, we had to ask to see it. I ordered a cheesecake with fresh cream. My partner ordered a sundae. When the food came out, my cheesecake was clearly shop brought and not homemade. And there was no fresh cream, just squirt cream. I'm not a child at a party. I expect much more than this! My partners sundae was just 3 different flavoured ice creams with yet more squirty cream. Several of the listed ingredients were not present. When we queried this with the waitress her initial response was to take it back to the kitchen and tell the chef. When she brought the same dish back to our table and told us that "this is how the chef serves it" we were not happy. When we then said it isn't as described on the menu, her response was "I don't write the menu". We were not happy with this response and asked for it to be removed from our bill. A few minutes later, the manager came to our table to tell us that the waitress was in floods of tears as we'd been so rude to her!!! As far as I'm concerned, neither myself nor my partner were rude. And it certainly was never our intention to upset the girl. The problem clearly lies with the management, the chef and the training / communication skills of the staff. I do not go out and spend money, to then be made to feel that I am in the wrong for complaining about poor standards! I appreciate that it has been a difficult year for the hospitality industries, but even more reason to take pride in the service that they provide. My bad experience today, sadly means that we will not be going back! I never write a bad review, but feel the way we were treated was appalling!!

On the strength of the recent reviews we decided to revisit this pub. Couldn't fault a thing. Service. Atmosphere. Food and drinks all absolutely excellent. The Parma Violet Ice cream and Quince Gin was a great end to an excellent Saturday lunch.
