The Cross Oak in Caerphilly

I don't know if they have a new chef or if they were on holiday but this was so different to the delicious food we've had before that I couldn't believe the difference. It was all frozen: chips, onion rings, burger. Family couldn't even eat it, terrible. Used to proper cooked meals there like home cooked fresh, felt burger used to be made there not like the flat plastic thing I was given tonight. Didn't mind paying prices for what it was but not for this meal. Not going back.

Absolutely awful experience today. Sat on a table (which we had to rearrange ourselves) with black carpet and flies all around the table the whole time we were there. Lasagnes were burnt and very black all around the edges. Sent them back as not edible. One poor apology from one waitress who didn’t really seem to care. Took ages for new lasagnes to be served. One of which then looked like a pile of mush (see photo). So very very disappointing as this is our local and we had booked a table for our son’s birthday. This spoiled the whole day to be honest! Poor service and poor atmosphere. Hate to say this but we won’t be returning for food again!

Nice food but very over priced for a pub in Oakdale. 2x chicken goujons 1x Lasagne 1x small fish & chips 2x fish & chips. £62!!

Haven't been to the place for over 30 years. Food was top notch and plenty of it. The staff were brilliant, helpful, polite and very well turned out. Would thoroughly recommend this place and I won't be leaving it another 30 years ! Be back in a week or so and really looking forward to it. We'll done to you all. !!

Very quiet, but it was a Monday lunchtime. Ordered pie and chips and was expecting a puffy top pie and frozen chips but was really (pleasantly) surprised to get a proper pie and fresh cut chips!

It was very quiet when I went there with elderly relatives. Food was excellent and plenty of it. Chips were really good. Special mention to the barmaid who was so attentive to my relatives as she could see they were unsteady on their feet.

Many good attributes & positive changes to the Cross Oak with more to come soon. A very positive attitude in general to all customers.

Best thing this pub ever did was allowing Dogs in bar only. fantastic atmosphere great pint.

Excellent food. Large portions. I had home made curry, one of best flavoured ones I've had in a long time. All other guests agreed (11) food was worth the money

Nice atmosphere nice place food just ok

This was the first time we visited The Cross Oak. My son is moving into the area so as a family we decided to go for a meal here…it 100% did not disappoint! The menu had loads of traditional meals and great value for money. Everyone loved their meals and the portions were huge! There was also a lovely local atmosphere in the pub too! We will definitely be back very soon!

Visited with Ilfracombe male voice choir. They gladly catered for us. Food was fantastic and a great price. Staff were very helpful and nothing too much trouble. I have a visual impairment and the staff helped me to get around. We will be back again soon. We enjoyed singing a few songs for staff and customers.

We have just had lunch, we were four of us. Had a really lovely roast dinner meal. Choice of Pork, Turkey and Beef, you could have a combination of your choice. Cooked beautifully, with Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, stuffing, parsnip and potatoes. separate dish of vegetables with broccoli, peas, carrots, swede. cabbage. Also another dish of cauliflower cheese served with gravy. Superb dinner, and good choice of desserts. Recommend.

I went along on Christmas day for lunch as part of a party for six. We were excited as it was our first Christmas lunch out and a treat for elderly parents. We were very disappointed to be served as the final but one table. We arrived at 1.15pm but the main course wasn't served until 4.10pm without a word of explanation from the staff about the delay. The food was disappointing with just one parsnip, one roast potato and one boiled potato. The carrots and suede seemed to have been out of a tin. The meats were good I was also disappointed that our neighbouring table had been told to quieten down because my party had complained. This was simply untrue and I was embarrassed to think that our neighbouring table had been made to feel uncomfortable. I realise that all your staff were working exceptionally hard but the management overstretched itself in terms of sheer numbers of diners. I emailed my concerns to the manager but I have never recieved a response. My family frequented the pub for Sunday lunch but we will now take our business elsewhere.

We used the CrossOaks for my father's wake.From start to end they were excellent.The food and service were first class and made a difficult day easier. We would personally recommend them and look forward to visiting again with a happier occasion.

Goujons were ok but three for £6.95? Cheaper in borough market!

What a beautiful place service second to none very polite staff frequently passed and asked us every if everything was satisfactory recommend the place big time

My wife and I decided to have Christmas dinner out, for the first time. From this experience it will be our last. At £65 a head we expected something exception, how wrong could we be. We arrived on time, we then found out that we were not in the restaurant area we were in the snug, on a shared bench with two tables. Fortunately we are affable people and were able to converse with the couple sat on the bench next to us. We were also by the corridor that led to the gents toilet. Not conducive for a relaxed meal. The starter arrived, not the best start. The garnish dropped and was limp. We then waited for the main course. We waited and waited and waited. After 40 minutes the landlord apologised and offered a free drink for the delay. Again we waited and waited. Eventually after about an hour of waiting the meal arrived. The sprouts were rock hard, the roast potatoes were not cooked through and the veg looked like it was frozen not fresh. What a let down. Then we waited for desert. My wife and I ordered Christmas pudding with ice cream. We got Christmas pudding with brandy sauce and a small scoop of melted ice cream. It was quite obvious that the staff were over stretched so everyone suffered. The whole experience was supposed to enhance our Christmas Day, unfortunately it had the opposite effect. Not only that we had to pay for the privilege. We certainly would not recommend the Cross Oak Inn and will not be going next year.

Went here for breakfast with Santa and it was an absolute shambles, no organisation, Santa and the photographer were brilliant and had more interaction off them rather than the staff there, my son did enjoy but £15 for a ticket it was very overpriced

Lovely cozy pub with friendly, helpful staff. Absolutely beautiful meal, thoroughly enjoyed. Everything was absolutely spotlessly clean and tidy. We will definitely be visiting again! Thanks so much x

So sorry to have to post this. I booked a table and on booking asked if gluten free would be accommodated. I was told they used separate fryers etc. And catered for allergies. On ordering my food I was told only one fryer working tonight so had to have a jacket potato. My food arrived the chicken had no bbq sauce because it wasn't gluten free. I was told no butter for the jacket potato because it wasn't gf. It would have looked a bit more appetising if a bit of salad was on the plate. Saying that my friends food looked lovely and plenty of it. It's hard enough being gluten free and this experience really spoiled my evening. First time I've felt like this eating out.

Very disappointed with lunch. The prices have risen so much and the food quality doesn’t match the cost. I am told there are new owners, it’s a pity they haven’t kept the quality of the food . But moreover, it was absolutely freezing in the pub. They have a fire but this wasn’t used and there was no heating on. We had to keep our coats on whilst eating as did everyone else there. Many people complained about the cold and no one stayed after eating their meal.

We had a family gathering for my father's 81st birthday last night. We booked a month ago and food was pre ordered 2 weeks ago. We were rammed into a room with a previous baby showers left over sweet cart and massive balloon display, this meant we could not sit comfortably as we were squashed into seats and had little room to get in and out of seats. We then waited almost two hours for pre ordered food to start to arrive at the table. Service was unbelievably slow as only one waitress for over 20 people. Some food was cold and some was burnt, some children's meals didn't even arrive! Nobody came to clear the tables, we were not offered dessert menu. We cleared the tables ourselves so we could have a Birthday cake for my Dad. On voicing our concerns we were told the manager/owner had left. We have had many a large family gathering over the years at The Cross Oaks, never as shambolic as last night. Unfortunately we will not be returning for such poor service and bad customer service. Would never recommend a large gathering at this venu.

Fantastic food, great customer service. They checked on us to make sure we had everything we needed and our meal well as you can see from the pic was well presented and huge. Good value. Definitely going will be retuning!

It feels warmer and more welcoming than of late and staff are more responsive. Foods lovely 😍. Parking can be an issue but we usually park on street opposite.

Can't fault the service and atmosphere but the food was a disappointment. Went for my dad's 70th birthday and he loves fish. But of course they ran out of fish and he couldn't have the birthday meal he really wanted. No one really enjoyed the food. But like I said the atmosphere is great and I really want a local traditional pub like this to survive!

Great food and atmosphere, the veggie chilli con carne was unforgettable. Still thinking about it now. Would definitely go again!

Stayed for a party nearby, so I didn't eat. The room was spacious, clean, and tidy. Will be back.

Came here for food and drinks on the weekend. Service was fast and really enjoyed the homemade chicken curry, great atmosphere too :)

Not happy seen it on Facebook thought gibe it a try the menu is basic and very over prices for what you get it's cheep pub grub at to price to start was fly's in the vinger big no no and the curry was served with cold chicken did not complain after the fly just wanted to get out of there will not be there long lots young staff sat around talking no one really serving or makeing sure things are right sad like to see people do well sadly I will not be back

This restaurant is absolutely amazing, we came for some food and were seated had our drinks orders taken almost instantly, the food was not expected to be as great as it was , it was so tasty I would 100% recommend

Went up for a family lunch,food was superb,Burger i could only finish half(bought rest home). Steak superb also. Could not fault anything.

Lovely warm atmosphere when you entered + warm welcome. We was lucky to have nice weather , so sat outside in the gardens which are family safe, large nice grounds all enclosed. Sat inside to have our meal. Service very good.meal Lovely, will be definitely returning, all round a lovely experience. We'll done xxx

Recently had Sunday lunch at the Cross Oaks. The staff are friendly, welcoming and attentive. The roast beef, Turkey and pork were all delicious served with boiled potatoes, roast potatoes, stuffing, Yorkshire pudding, glazed parsnip and a huge dish of mixed veg to share. Will definitely be going again.

4 of us wanted a afternoon meal we had the menu none of the classics available and a lot more very few items, no fish and chips, no lasagne, only one burger off the menu, really disappointing we had our meal which was not what we really wanted very disappointing, and after the meal we sat there for 20 minutes waiting for table service,we had to go to the bar to get our drinks our self bear in mind there were only 8 people in the restaurant the staff were around the bar talking and laughing , when we got their attention for deserts t only a few items were available, this venue is under new management it will not survive the standards are far below and the management is none existence

Absolutely loved it here, Jo, Tony & all the staff were absolutely brilliant, we were made very welcome from the time we arrived. The food was very nice go for the steaks they're very good. The room was very big and bed Lovely and comfortable. Some lovely walks close by and we found time to go to Abergavenny and a real gem it is too. Overall we are planning to return.

This place has taken a step back from times of old. Prices are sky high even for the current climate and what you get is below par, the service was good polite and friendly but the end product did let them down and cost didn't match the lack of quality.

Food was nice,young waiter was lovely. But the bad language coming from the kitchen... well.

We have spent a lot of time in this pub over the years and I have never had a bad mouthful of food here ever until today, I ordered the corn beef pie which has always been delicious, the food arrived and I could tell at once that this was not the usual pie, this was a cheap horrible looking pie with lumps of potato in it and even more lumps in the gravy, it was returned to the kitchen and I opted for the mixed grill instead, which comprised of 2 cheap tasting sausages a bit of dried chicken, a small tough steak which I could not even cut through (which was brought home intact for the dog) and the tiniest piece of shrivelled up gammon for the princely sum of £22.95 , the menu choices have been cut back radically and there were several things out of stock, no lasagne, no cheesecake and no crumble, I was back home by around 9pm the whole evening ruined. In summing up, the quality of the food was cheap and horrible but the prices being charged were premium, which is a great shame because this is a lovely little pub, quite frankly we have had much better in Wetherspoons for a fraction of the price, unfortunately we won't be returning, the worst meal out in a long long time!

Recently had Sunday roast, unfortunately not to the same standard as years ago when it had a reputation for amazing Sunday dinners. The veg was cooked this time but the beef was over cooked and tough. No one asked if the meal was ok and service was quite slow/unorganised. Staff were friendly and overall the meal was average. Its a lovely pub with a beautiful beer garden, hopefully next time will be better 🤞

Amazing Sunday lunch, one of the best we’ve ever had. Excellent portion size and a very good selection of vegetables, all served hot and just like being at home for the traditional family roast. Huge thank you to Tommi, who is one of the best chefs we’ve ever met & who is an absolute credit to the establishment. Would recommend this place without hesitation & will definitely be returning, with other family members in the future.

We Had lovely sunday dinner here a bit more expensive than we usually pay but you get what u pay for choice of 3 meats and roasties and parsnips on plate huge dish of veg boiled potatoes and cauliflower cheese were asked if we wanted more but was plenty would recommend

What a wonderful little gem! All the food is home cooked, none of this microwaved rubbish you find in wetherspoons! The desserts are on another level! Wow! Luxury cheesecake which is a big enough portion to share and the staff are very friendly aswell. Theres a quiz on Thursday nights too. Whats not to like?

Food was good, but the rooms were a little dated. TV didnt work, toilet kept running all night, window didnt shut properly so lots of street noise. Was a great night out so that's all that matters. Would I come back .. def

The food was not up to their previous standard,eg cauliflower and broccoli bake was watery and burnt,roast potatoes burnt and parsnips were old woody ones cooked to death to soften them. There are no disabled toilet facilities at all,no wheel chair access,so if someone wants the toilet they have to try and negotiate steps,narrow door ways and doors that don't fit and bolt in their frames

Menu was ok but lacking imagination and any wow factor, especially the dessert. If you are a dessert lover you will be disappointed

Booked for my daughter engagement last night . Wow what a fantastic place to hav a big family meal together. The food was pre ordered which is great . The staff was so helpful 'polite ' and would go out of their way to help . The food was outstanding perfect. Plenty of . So well worth the value. Unfortunately the pub has gone down ijn my estimation the food was OK not great 5/10 with an emphasis on quantity over quality. I had the cow burger this time, and fish and chips previously. The cow burger was big and looked great on the plate but really not that tasty and a bit bland and the bun was a bit stale, The chips however were awesome and I really enjoyed those more than the burger. Well seasoned and crispy. As a local pub for drinks etc. it's excellent really good prices, but just OK pub food. Staff are super helpful and friendly though. So you can't fault the location, staff or prices. Just the food let it down on this occasion. Would I go there again, yes! Would I order the same food? No.

Lovely meal, lovely accomodation, lovely people, but next time, they should put up a small direction of how to use the electric shower.

Called in yesterday lunchtime without booking it was no problem and we were shown to table immediately - very friendly and attentive staff - ordered Scampi & Chicken Islwyn - portions very good and skin on fries were nicest I've tasted! Where do I start with desserts ! Belgian waffle & white choc and raspberry cheesecake - both huge portions and topped off with fresh strawberry kiwi fruit & pineapple - would highly recommend paying them a visit x

Disapointing food. Went based on the reviews but didn't live up to expectations. Certainly not freshly prepared food.

Haven't had Sunday lunch her for ages and had forgotten how good it was. Portions seem more generous than ever as well. Had Yorkshire, stuffing, 2 types of potato and I about 6 different types of veg!

The service here was absolutely outstanding, unfortunately my first meal wasn't quite right but they graciously took it back and replaced it. What followed was delicious and my partner's meal was, I quote, "the best burger he's ever had"!! And we've had a lot of burgers in our time 😂 We will definitely be back 😀

Food was lovely, seems pricey but believe me it's worth the money! My dad had a pie that could feed 2. Do not eat before you go. Pub seemed friendly, staff were attentive and happy to help. We will be back in the future. Only thing I would say is there doesn't seem to be a car park (well I didn't see it if it was there) so limited parking on the road.

Brilliant love people and nice food

The place was welcoming and the staff were very nice but the food really let it down. I ordered the Chicken Pasta Alfredo and it came with macaroni noodles that were thin like the ones you get in instant pasta pots and were either overcooked and mushy or reheated, overall it was bland. Though I must say the garlic bread that came with it was to die for! The food really didn't condone the price and I felt a bit ripped off by it but the staff made the experience a lot better so it feels right giving three stars still despite what I didn't like about the food.

Going in, the inside is significantly larger than it looks. Good Russian food at reasonable prices. Highly recommended.
