Just returned from our first stay at the Rockford Inn. It was a family get together and we all had a great time. We were very well looked after by Paul, Stella and James. Nothing was too much trouble for them and the atmosphere was wonderful. The choice of food was good, freshly prepared and very tasty. The rooms were cosy and comfortable, clean and tidy. The locally brewed real ale was very nice indeed. The location is ideally suited for walks in lovely countryside. We left being well relaxed and with lots of happy memories. Will we return? Yes of course we will!! Eddie Phillips

What a gem of a find. A wonderful location with beautiful Lynton and Lynmouth on the doorstep and not far from Castle Combe and Ilfracombe. We were so grateful that The Rockford could fit us in for an evening meal as we had not booked anywhere for that night. How pleased were we as we had a fantastic meal and one dessert that was all good value for money. This pub is off the beaten track but is set in beautiful surroundings and with the food that is produced should be a popular choice. Give this pub a visit, you won’t be disappointed.

Nice out the way 17th century pub Inn with a fast running streem next to the Inn, Breakfast was good and plenty with a good menu all included in the price , I personally found that the evening meal menu was expensive fish and chips just under £20 and pie and chips £18 . the staff were nice and friendly unfortunately the central heating system was playing up and the heating was hot and couldn't be turned off in our room so very hot in August ,the room we had was clean and tidy and adequate, the ensuite was OK but no shelving to put your washing toiletries on ,the tv needs updating it was a old Tv with a out-of date free view box no BBC channels but overall the room and the Inn was pleasant.

My uncle found this place as he wanted to take us to a pub in the country! It is a cozy little pub with a place to stay if needed. There was so much to look at while waiting for the food, trinkets, beer mugs, photos! The food was delicious and the bar tender was very nice! The atmosphere was brilliant for a British pub!

We were staying in the village (but not at the pub) and had a couple of lunches at Rockford Inn. Food was acceptable pub grub but nothing special. This site lists weekday closing time as 10.30 PM. However, we noticed that the pub was regularly in darkness with the "closed" sign up around 9PM - so don't call by late in the evening on the off chance hoping for a drink.

My brother and I decided that we were going to go on an old boys (We're 64 and 62) walking holiday. We used the National Trust Book 100 Great Pub Walks. The walks did not look too arduous and the pubs look good. What an amazing surprise we were in for the walks were gorgeous and the pubs superb. All seven we stayed at obviously were bed and breakfast, some in the book aren't. We decided to head to Devon, Dorset and Wiltshire as an area we did not know too well. This was pub, and walk, Two. We drove to this pub from the Heddon Valley. It is closed in the afternoon, so we went for a walk by the River Lyn up to Watersmeet. This river is probably the most beautiful valley I have ever walked, the scenery is stunning, yet it appears relatively unspoilt and unused. When we got back to the pub we got our room, again a very nice twin en-suite room, the room was clean and tidy, which when we saw the pub it is unsurprising. The bar has numerous character jugs on shelves, plus many other trinkets and they all shine. They are immaculate, whoever cleans then is obviously an expert! The pub is a quirky, as is the landlord, he was a comedy act from the start. It all created a fantastic atmosphere, with all the customers quickly getting chatting to each other. A really friendly place. Another extremely high quality pub on our walk. The walk was the longest we did, but was amazing, firstly along the river and then along Lorna Doone Valley and up onto Exmoor, the best days walking of the holiday.

We popped in for lunch on a slightly damp April day and had a great experience. We would normally have sat outside with our dog, but the weather didn't allow for it. Luckily, he was made to feel very welcome by the gentleman behind the bar who offered him treats and showed us the Doggie Station with blankets and bowls etc. The food was also lovely, just what we needed before we walked back to Lynmouth. Would definitely visit again.

Very nice and enjoyable Sunday lunch. Choice of two roasts - ours were beef and gammon. You could have a mix but gammon with gravy would be very odd (although my husband had it!) Nicely cooked veg and generous portions. Both had puddings. Sticky toffee good. Bread and croissant pud had nice flavour but a bit ‘soft’. A nice crispy top would have elevated it. We sat on top level and I was quite cold throughout (despite big jumper) which made it a bit uncomfortable. There was a lovely log burner on lower level but tables were full and heat didn’t circulate. Would definitely return when weather improves - lad behind bar was extremely friendly and professional.

What a gem! The pub is in a beautiful location, and walks a plenty, two or four legged friends. Paul and Stella and of course Bailey, are a credit to the Rockford! Jobs to keep them busy for a while, having inherited recently, but maintaining a lovely environment to stay, and eat. The room we had was nicely appointed, with smart TV, usb stations, tea and coffee, hairdryer and copious amounts of hot running water. It was lovely and clean, and nice quality bedding and towels. Really nice touch in bathroom included a pot with cotton wool balls and buds etc. The breakfast was filling because of the quality products being used from butchers and baker. The menu isn't vast, but covers most tastes and vegan/vegetarian option. But the excellent quality and presentation is lovely! Steak and ale pie, was so nice I had it two nights running! Burgers were a delightful challenge! Things will only get better in their capable hands, and we look forward to our next visit. They also do dinner bed and breakfast deals, so ask, as its nice not to have to trudge out around the lanes for your evening meal!

The location is beautiful, and the staff are very welcoming, but that's where the compliments stop!! The Rockford Inn needs to get in line with the 21st century. Not being able to check in between 3 and 6 in the current economic climate is certainly not acceptable, if you want to survive as any hospitality industry. The food was mediocre to say the least, and if my "Exmoor steak burger" had ever seen Exmoor, then I'm an Antarctic Explorer!! The rooms and whole environment are dated, and the whole place is in need of a refurb. There was no plug in our sink, and the bed was so noisy and uncomfortable, we were glad to get home for a decent nights sleep. We only stayed for on e breakfast, and it was pretty abysmal, albeit, the sausages in my sandwich were local, there was no attention to detail. Overall there was no culinary prowess demonstrated throughout our stay, and there are much better eateries and restaurants nearby. All in all, a beautiful location, but a terrible 'hostel'. Wouldn't go back again

Went here for evening meal and absolutely loved it! Parking can be a challenge but luckily we got a space, the roads on approach are narrow with few passing places. The pub is beautiful as is its surroundings, please owners do not modernise the pub! It’s wonderfully old fashioned and really sets the tone of a great atmosphere because of it. The staff are great, loads of banter and tonnes of laughs were had the entire evening! Dog friendly which is super important to us! There is a decent menu on including for vegetarians. I had the scampi which was great, so tasty. I also had the halloumi sticks with cranberry sauce to start, got loads of cranberry sauce which is quite unusual and very welcomed. For dessert I had the biscotti cheese cake which was again great quality. My wife had the Blackened Cajun chicken which had a beautiful flavour to it, very minor criticism was that it was a little dry/overcooked; otherwise perfect though! Based on this experience we wouldn’t hesitate to call again and hope we have cause to eat here so we can try some other menu items as there are still plenty of options we’d love to choose from! No mobile phone signal but there is public Wi-Fi, it’s an older style pub so quite small inside and not sure about wheel chairs and push chairs…..but lovely cosy feel! If you’re in the area do yourself a favour and book a table! Or chance your arm and call in!

Had an overnight stay at the Rockford Inn recently and wasn't particularly impressed. Firstly, the good things. On arrival the welcome was warm and friendly including the lovely black labrador that greeted me but from there it went downhill. I expected the single room to be small they always are but this one was exceptionally so. Iuckily there was room under the bed for my small suitcase. The bedside table couldn't accommodate anymore then was already on it tea/coffee basket, lamp and a cup no room for a book even. I couldnt find the TV control either only the one for the freebox and as I was already in bed when I discovered this I used the tablet I had with me to watch TV instead ( I had already been downstairs previously to get the WiFi code as that didn't seem to be displayed in the room) I slept OK although the mattress could have done with a topper to make it a bit more comfortable ( but may have been OK for other people ). Now for breakfast 😐 all the rooms were mixed together on various tables where I was sitting on the end with four other people I didn't know I could hardly use my knife and fork because the space was so limited it was not an enjoyable experience. I wouldn't return which is a shame as the welcome was very pleasant.

Thought we would give this local pub a try as heard new owners. Room was cold and a harsh breeze was let in every time someone opened the door. Disappointed with menu consisting of 5 options. No typical drink choices, larger or cider. Flat soda & coke. Food arrived, steak was served plain with nothing other than a bowl of chips & a fried egg.. Odd! Lamb curry tasted more of old goat, again very odd. Fish just tasted as it was from the frozen isle in a supermarket. Childs meal was given a choice of peas/ beans to then be told the chef was foreign and didn't understand what beans were. Then noticed they were selling tins of them in the cabinet next to the bar? Again odd. After main meals we asked for a dessert menu to then be told, we only have a lemon shortcake left because apperently the order never arrived, despite knowing there was bookings for mother day too. Overall very disappointed in service, food & experience. Definitely won't be recommending or returning any time soon.

This will be the fourth time we have stayed at the Rockford. It's location by the river is fantastic, and the staff go the extra mile to ensure guests have a relaxing stay. On this occasion Lee and Nicky should have been nominated for a Nobel prize! Due to staff shortages Lee was doing most things by himself, including the cooking etc....... Nicky did her bit too, but was part time due to other commitments. To cap it all the village suffered a power cut on the Thursday night. With no mobile signal, or a working landline, Lee drove to the nearest signal area and called the power supplier. Eventually the power was restored by the installation of a temporary generator which served the whole village. Although no hot food was available that night, sandwiches were swiftly made (and very nice) so no one went hungry. Lee and Nicky really worked wonders in difficult circumstances. To the owners of the Rockford: Do not let these people leave. They are probably the best staff you'll ever have.

Mould around sink, shower tray taped together, cobwebs, carpet and bathroom flooring in need of replacement as did the furniture. Hallway leading to room has terrible smoke smell. First impressions weren't brilliant as there was no atmosphere in the pub dining room at all - everyone was sitting eating in silence until the landlady put Whitney Houston music on and then everyone started talking to drown out the music!!!All joking aside, although the atmosphere was a little frosty, the food was really good. I had the homemade tomato soup to start which was delicious. Very tiny problem though in so much as I found a very small sliver of metal foil in my soup - it looked like the thin bits of wire from a pan scourer. I ate the rest of my soup a bit more cautiously, but it was obviously a one-off thing and something I was happy to overlook as the soup was so delicious. I left the metal bit on the side of my plate just so the kitchen could see that there had been a problem. I had steak for main course (as I usually do) and it was very good. Portion sizes were reasonable.

After an initially frosty reception the staff did warm up and chatted, however the food was very disappointing. Steak ordered med/well done arrived on a plate with everything swimming in blood! It was returned and on a second attempt, was cooked correctly, however the rib eye steak was uncharacteristically rather gristly. The steak and ale pie was similarly disappointing with weak, watery gravy and dull, unappetising veg. All in all, a great disappointment and not value for money. Could do much better.

Four of us ate here midweek one evening. it had been recommended to us in the past. We shared 2 starter. One crab pate with toast and one creamy mushrooms 'on toast'. Crab was fine but could have done with one more piece of toast, 3 not really enough. The mushrooms had no toast..when we asked were told they had run out of the bread so it was in a pastry shell instead..why couldn't we have been told that at point of ordering. 3 of us had 'catch of the day' in tempura batter. Mine had virtually no fish in it. The man waiting on our table sent it back to kitchen but he only took the fish and I had to wait for a new piece to be cooked while the other 3 started theirs. So I had the choice of eating my chips so they didn't cold or waiting. I chose the first option. Most places would have taken the whole plate away and kept it hot or just done a whole new meal. No real apology, 'chef doesn't know how it happened'. No offer of a drink on the house or a reduction in bill. The peas with the fish and chips were described in a certain way but turned out to be plain boiled peas. My new dish was a lot better but the 3 of us thought inside the batter there wasn't much fish for the price The other person had cottage pie, a generous size but he thought the potato hadn't really been mashed well more like potato that had smashed a bit with fork but no butter or mile added. Our server/waiter had a very large face covering but not very securely tied so he had to keep adjusting it which wasnt very reassuring

We walked from watersmeet to Rockford with the family I allowed a stop for lunch at the Rockford inn As we arrived a member of staff quickly ushered us to a table for 4He explained that due to current restrictions that it would be table service only (which we were very happy with)His attitude was very abrupt from the start we ordered drinks and after a while he came back to order food which came out fairly quickly and was of an excellent quality It seemed he was not enjoying the work everything was a trial at the time A table of 4 turned up and the same curt chat was given to them I went to the loo and on my way back I asked go pay the bill I was asked to go back to my table and wait in a very angry way We then again asked for the bill Okay came the reply I’ll bring it to you in about 15 minutes saying he had 8000 things to do!After a while he eventually gave us our billSaying I’ll pick it up later We paid by cash as soon as we could By this time the table for 4 left before even ordering giving the raised eyebrows to us As they left The food was excellent the customer service not so

We ate lunch here on 2 consecutive days. The staff are friendly and chatty and they have set up a one way system to keep customers safe. The Exmoor Gold ale is delicious and they serve a range of ciabatta rolls, omelettes and mains at lunchtime. The rolls were well filled and served with a tasty homemade coleslaw. They are currently only open to B&B guests in the evening but are planning to expand this so worth a phone call if you are thinking about eating there in the evening.

I have been going to Lynmouth for the past 25 years I like it so much I went there for my honeymoon. For quite a few years nowI have been self catering. And always but always have a meal at the Rockford Inn.Its a 16th century Inn with all the beams etc and also do B & B. I went last year and I cried the people who were there were unbelievably bad.The food was disgusting.it has changed hands again thank goodness. It’s position is so beautiful opposite the River Inn above Watersmeet. Great if you’re walking as you can get a snack or a meal at the outside area literally on the banks of the river.you can also get a lovely meal inside. Foods delicious, served beautifully and friendly by Simon ( not biased at all, he’s a Black Country lad as I am a Black Country lass) an excellent ambassador for the owners.also a lovely lady who I don’t know the name of but she was so kind and helpful.would now go back just to see the staff, in fact ai am,! in August,

A delightful 17th century inn away from the hustle and bustle of everydaylife. Lots of lovely walks in the area and the staff were great. The problem of the chef walking out just before we arrived could have been a disaster but was overcome by the lovely Sarah who cooked at the sister establishment in Lynton and the drove up to cook for us each morning and evening. All the staff were really friendly and we had a great time and great food. Wouldn't hesitate to come back or recommend.

Visited at 2pm on Thursday Feb 20th during half term. It was closed despite the sign next to the door saying opening times were until 4pm. Looking at other reviews this has happened before. Great looking pub and location but don’t plan your walk around it!

Lovely lunch after walking along the river on a gloomy day. Young couple just started running premises. Recommend the duck dish. Nothing too much effort for landlords. We will certainly go back.

The Rockford is a great pub on the northern side of Exmoor. We stayed with family who were on holiday from Australia. The staff at the pub were very friendly and welcoming. The beer was very well kept in the cask. Dinner in the evening was excellent, I had the duck. The room are very comfortable and individual. The ones on the front over look the beautiful river Lynn. We will be coming back, strongly recommended.

We have just returned from a weekend break at this hotel. We had been looking forward to it immensely as a few friends have stayed and spoke highly of it, but that was a few years ago when 2 ladies ran it.Our room was attractively furnished but hadn't been hoovered or dusted and the toilet was disgustingly dirty with no toilet paper, just the cardboard tube, so obviously not checked. Luckily I had taken a toilet roll after reading an earlier review where limited paper was mentioned. The towels seemed clean but the sheets not so. Although the bed appeared to be made the bottom sheet was crumpled and covered in bits of black fluff, which was also on the carpet, along with black cotton. We turned the sheet over but didn't have the restful weekend we had hoped for. Our bed was made while we were out, sheets not changed, we didn't expect that, but the carpet still not vacuumed. How can you leave black cotton on the carpet and not pick it up?We ate in the bar the first night, another guest had been asked to keep the log fire going, a limited choice of beers was disappointing but the meals were very nice as was breakfast.Yes we got a very good deal but would have happily paid double the amount if it meant a clean, comfortable room where we enjoyed a goods night sleep.

We stayed in The Rockford Inn last March when the managers Mike and June were first at the pub. They were cheerful and enthusiastic. We stayed in a holiday cottage in Rockford this Christmas and discovered that this was no longer so. The inn has seven bedrooms, a large bar area and breakfast room and a kitchen producing breakfasts, lunches and dinners. They did not appear to have any staff and one couple cannot be expected to fill the posts of chambermaid, maintenance man, chef, waiter, bar manager and cleaner and the strain has obviously taken it’s toll. We had expected to eat there on the evenings of 23rd and 25th December. On the Monday we were informed that the cooker had broken so there was no food. On Christmas Eve the pub was closed all day but we managed to speak to June in the evening to ensure that the cooker had been repaired and we could still have our Christmas meal with them. She informed us that, as Mike was unwell, she would be cooking on Christmas Day and, as she could only cope with the guests they had staying, our booking would not be honoured. As, by then, it was too late to shop and we could not find anywhere else in the area that would be open, our festive meal was a ham sandwich! On Boxing Day, the inn was again closed all day. We met many people on our walks who live in the area who told us that they no longer went to the pub as they never knew when it would be open and we saw many groups of walkers on Christmas Eve and Boxing Day disappointed and frustrated that they were not going to get any refreshment. Rockford used to be a busy place with quite a few residents, a gift shop, tea room and thriving pub. Now it only has a rather run down pub, a handful of residents and a number of holiday cottages. If the pub is not a success, these cottages will be l used less and Rockford will become a ghost hamlet. I beg the lessee, Mark Hanrahan, to do something to ensure the Rockford Inn is the attractive, successful venue it could and should be.

Thanks a lot. It was beautiful with you. ⭐⭐⭐⭐PSEin bisschen Nervenkitzel auf dem Weg ins Hotel ist auch dabei.... Passt zur perfekten Lage!

I agreed to meet some friends at this pub having driven from Dorset. Looked very quaint and welcoming from the outside but that’s where it ended. For a Saturday night it was pretty quiet although I could only park on the lane. I ordered a local gin and tonic, I was offered a double so thought why not after a long drive. Only I nearly choked when I was told £10.10!!! I think they saw me as a city slicker as I was still in my office work clothes. Needless to say for the rest of the weekend we ate and drank at the Stag Hunter which was so much cheaper, cosier and friendly and by comparison was £3 cheaper for a double G&T. Be warned!

We stayed at the Rockford for 3 nights. The welcome on checking in was ok just not very warm or natural. Rooms were comfortable but needed a good clean, although they were recently decorated the cleaner needs to look at the mildew on windows, thick dust on window sills and the carpet was dirty. We ate there on our first evening and we found the food very average, a lot of the menu had been scaled down due to being out of season, it would have been easier for them to print out updated menus to save disappointment and the menu board outside had nothing in it! The outside of th building needs a lot of work as very shabby, hanging basket brackets hanging off and rusty, planters at the front were broken and full of died plants and weeds. the beer garden was hilarious! A horrible gazebo covered it in which was hideous and not in keeping with the surroundings, ashtrays not emptied often and over spilling. Ornaments by the wood burner need cleaning as do the window sills.

The venison was delicious and the vegetables that accompanied it were perfectly cooked. The same can be said about the duck we had. So good that we will have to return and have more of the same but we also try the steak with triple cooked chips, seafood linguini and so much more.

We have regularly walked here from Watersmeet for a very pleasant lunch (often the excellent Steak and Ale pie). Unfortunately, on our most recent visit the food was not as good (particularly the Steak and Ale pie). We were with a friend at the time who had not been there before and it was disappointing that the food was not as good as before.

This pub is tucked away in a valley out of the way. It is run by a wonderful friendly couple. The food is very good. We had the risotto and the Chicken with mozzarella and bacon. Both were very good. Good selection of ciders (always a must for us).

Really good freshly cooked food. Welcoming atmosphere where everybody was talking to others, even though we had only just met. Service excellent as my husband has an allergy to onions and Mike, the chef, came out to find out exactly what would be acceptable for him - good old ham, egg and chips won the day!! and our daughter is vegetarian and again that was absolutely no trouble and she was extremely pleased with her choice and we all ate everything.

Lovely modern roomy lodges in a beautiful location. Breakfast choice was great, cooked breakfast very good & piping hot👍 Pub food also excellent, quick service, good choices. Most staff helpful & friendly. One member of staff who greeted us on arrival wasn't welcoming. Only a couple of minor things- rusty toilet roll holder which spoilt the rest of the very new bathroom & the shelf above sink is in the way. Suggestion - small fridge, there is room. Mirror near plug sockets. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Enjoyed a lovely roast dinner at the hele bay pub today. The landlord and landlady were very welcoming and friendly. The food was great so there was hardly any leftovers for the dog who was allowed to sit and watch us eat it as it’s a dog friendly pub!

Stumbled across the cafe when we arrived in Ilfracombe and needed coffee. Quaint and characterful and clearly has it's regular customers. Coffee was good and hot but the homemade Eccles cake was amazing! The other treats looked good too. Coming across The Naked Cake cafe was the best thing about Ilfracombe which was otherwise, tatty and very down at heel.
