Purchased a take-away. This place is awesome, great tasting food. And I think the best Chinese food in the area. I would give it 5 stars, but things have changed, just a little. The price is reasonable, but the portions are definitely smaller. The containers have been affected by "shrink flation"and are much smaller ... Worth a try, but I do feel a little disappointed.

We ordered the £23 meal for two people and it was very good and enough food for both (and we were veeeery hungry). Staff was nice and they didn't charge service! Will go back for sure.

A group of 23 of us had a great meal on Saturday evening. The food was good quality and more was offered at the end, for anyone still hungry. £23pp; great value too. We recommend.

Thank you for a lovely evening . Shelly suggested a great set menu for our group . 24 friends from the local Baptist Church. 7pm Saturday night . Generous portions , plenty of variety . We were served altogether although the restaurant was very busy . Everyone left happy and well fed . We look forward to seeing you again soon .

Had a takeaway from here for the second time in as many weeks this evening. Service on the phone and in person was great and the staff were very polite. Contrary to other reviews our portion sizes have been great both times and food left over. The food was excellent too. Would definetly recommend

Lovely restaurant, friendly staff and great food.

I am new to the area and looked for a chinese restaurant and found this place and thought i would go for dinner. Firstly the place looked stunning from the outside. The customers all knew the staff by their names which showed that customers were regulars and they had a good relationship with their customers. The staff were very friendly and welcoming and offered us a table outside by the river. Food was fresh and delicious and the owner was very helpful with giving us an insight of the area. Thank you for the great hospitality, we will be back

Ordered takeaway from here last night. Duck, noodles and rice all fine, containers full, crispy chilli beef and sweet sour small containers though we’re only half full, four of us could only have a spoon of each on our plate and it was all gone. Not sure why the containers on those dishes are only being filled halfway, could understand if they were big containers but they were not. Food was tasty though.

Stopped in for dinner, seated outside by the river 👍. Had a very filling meal and the staff were really nice. Service was quick too. After giving up takeaways recently, I will be eating at this restaurant as my go to for Chinese locally.

I have always given this restaurant 5 stars! However had a takeaway from there yesterday its been a while. The beef was over cooked, The chicken balls were over cooked, Beef curry was bland, Over £50 spent not a prawn cracker in sight. I don't no if they have changed chef but was very disappointed 😔

Ordered a takeaway to be delivered. What we ordered ok, but large containers half full and a main chicken dish in such a small container. Chicken satay was chewy and again half the size due to being on small sticks. I will not be ordering from them again

Always our go to Chinese. Ordered Friday night said would be 1 hour - 1.5 hours. But came within the hour! Fresh and tasty food and always comes hot. Never use any other Chinese it’s the best around by far.

Ww usualy use a different chinese but on few occasions wasnt up tobstandard.. Aftervreading reviews on here raving about how lovely itbis im must disagree... Had a delivery last night.. Driver was friendly and polite.. Food was warm, mybworse nightmare, Why it's not hot i dont understand. No excuse... The Ribs were tough to eat.. Tge special chowmein, I asked what itvwas as told it jad all sorts d in.. Well 1 prawn.. Strips of chicken.. No beef, pork.. Like other special chow meins had lots in.chicken balls compared to other chineses.. Tasteless.. Disappointed, Thought was going to be amazing, reading the reviews... Wont be ordering again.

Great restaurant and takeaway not too expensive.

I did not go. Put off after phoning. Had the most appallingly unhelpful person who answered the phone and I said I was in a wheelchair and she was going to book it and I then asked if it was accessible and she said no! Off hand and rude she then escalated matters by being obnoxious saying this is a listed building and we are upstairs, yet she as going to book me in even tho' I said I was in a wheelchair. Why are people so horrible and abusive to disabled people? I am afraid I got rude in the end with frustration. Not a clue how behave this person.

Easily the best Chinese in Bishops Stortford. Very highly recommended. We’ll be back!

1st coming here based on the online reviews and near the station. Very friendly staff and lovely warm welcome which was nice. Nice clean restaurant and great decor. I was looked after by Shelley who was excellent. Won ton soup to start then chicken noodles and prawn balls for main. All very tasty will def come back soon!

The Rivermill accommodated 20 of us at 10.30 pm after we’d done a show at the local theatre. The food was excellent and the service exceptional- Shelley was helpful it getting all the orders done and nothing was too much trouble for them - they were brilliant

Great setting Great atmosphere and very attentive service. Mushrooms are a must try. Great food and lots of choice. Owner was Great and let us change a few things at no charge. 5 stars all round

They do not offer any sweet and sour chicken balls in quantity less than ten, because they are half the size of anywhere else, even the sour sauce container has half size.Prawn crackers half size bag, satay chicken on shorter wooden sticks, unbelievable. We use China City and Gourmet Oriental when we can be bothered to drive. Lesson learnt this evening.

Absolutely the best chinese restaurant around, the staff are very welcoming and friendly. The food id very tasty and of good portion size. Plenty of parking outside. Will definitely go back.

I was very impressed with the quality of food and the service with Rivermill. Had not been back for a while after moving out from the area. Had great meal with friends last week and they still manage to provide excellent food and attentive service on a busy night.

Ruined our New Years Eve meal. Forgot half the order. Rang them to ask them to bring rest of order and got hurled abuse at. Will never use this place again.

Had the best Chinese meal with my kids last night. The owner went beyond to accommodate 4 for us even we didn’t make a reservation on the New Year’s Eve. Food was excellent and my kids were so happy and requested to come back again next weekend already and I have called up to reserve a table for our next visit👍🏻

After our favourite Chinese has closed we have been doing the rounds trying to find a decent takeaway. We read the reviews for the river mill and we felt it worth a try so ordered a takeaway for delivery. The food was hot and delivered in a reasonable time, but that was sadly the only good part of the order. We had ordered a large container of egg fried rice and we received a small container of rice. We also ordered a chicken and mushroom soup but received chicken and sweetcorn soup (I can’t stand sweetcorn).The rest of the food was ok but nothing special. I found that the reviews I had been reading not being very accurate so I’m only giving 3 ⭐️ due to the fact I would like what I ordered not what they feel like sending. So our search continues for a decent Chinese restaurant unfortunately!!!

What a great find! We have never visited this restaurant before, ended up there by chance. The food was so delicious! The staff members and owners were very friendly. I would even like to mention how clean the toilets were! We will definitely be back!

Cannot speak more highly of this place. The staff are like a family make us feel so welcome and actually stop to have a chat and make sure everything is to our liking. The food is also amazing have tried a few different dishes and have liked every one. We love sitting outside by the river and what a lovely atmosphere. Keep it up x

This is by far the best Chinese restaurant in the area, always a welcoming smile from staff, food is amazing and nothing is too much trouble. Such a clean restaurant and relaxing atmosphere. The chef came to speak to us one night and explained how everything is made from scratch, and it shows in the taste. Can’t wait to return.

Service very quick. Food was good apart from vegetable curry which was disappointing. Draft beers on menu but don't exist in reality. Very noisy family didn't help atmosphere.

Went during the week to experience the Chinese food in Bishop's Stortford as we usually visit Peking Palace in Sawbridgworh. On arrival we stepped out of the Taxi to see a white male kitchen chef/helper smoking directly outside the restaurant sitting on a bench. At this point I wished we should've just walked away! Walking upstairs to the restaurant it quickly came apparent I made a mistake in my booking. The caperts were filthy, windows dirty and tables were old and sticky. The food was just okay, nothing special or nothing worth remembering. Lesson learned on this restaurant was to never return.

Possibly the best Chinese I’ve ever had! 🤩 Great variety and choices on the menu, such a fast turn around and good quality food. The staff were amazing and attentive, the outside seating was stunning and clean. I would come back here in a heart beat.

Promised a takeaway in 1 hour 15 minutes. After 1 hour 40 we phoned back to be told it’ll be another 15 minutes and had to listen to the rudest man ever to set foot in a resturant, blaming a woman in the resturant for telling us it would be 1 hour 15 minutes- when it was actually him who told us. No apology, just blamed his fellow worker. Terrible place. Be aware.

This will be the last time I order from this company it used to be brilliant but lately the food has not been the best I can tell when pre cooked food has been heated up as the rice was really hard my chips was burnt curry sauce was thick that you could chew on it and my sweet and sour chicken I could tell had been put in the microwave as when I opened it there was a thick layer on the sauce as a regular customer for many years I am very disappointed in the service lately

This restaurant is fantastic for both eat in and take away, the staff are lovely, very friendly and cater to your needs, the take away service is excellent with a delivery service should you choose it.

Shocking portion sizes for high prices. The rice was gritty, the prawn curry had about 4 prawns and practically a whole onion! So disappointed and will not be going back for more!

If you're on a diet but fancy a Chinese this is the place to go. They forgot 2 dishes, the seaweed was thick slices rather than tiny Crisps bits. We ordered the duck which was like rubber, the pancakes were crisp enough to be used as a Frisbee and the plum sauce was more like glue. We have used Rivermill before and it wasn't this bad but won't be risking it again.

The food was awful Spare ribs just bone and so small Chicken pre-cooked off site (looked undercooked we did not take a chance on eating it) 4 raw prawns on cut up onion what dish is that ment to be? As for the sizzling chicken pur fat awful. Two glasses of wine undrinkable The lady running the place was understanding and reduced the bill but that isn't the point

The Rivermill is a our favorite Chinese restaurant with very much the feel of a family business the food is freshly prepared and items on the Buffet are always replenish to stay run out. We especially enjoyed the all inclusive meal for two and have done it for four as well. It really is a freshly prepared delightful and varied feast we highly recommend the river mill

Nice setting by the river. Food was exceptional. Very tasty, well cooked, and very fresh. Waiting staff were friendly and efficient. Had a really nice relaxed family dinner, not rushed at all. Really good value for money. Will definitely return and recommend to others.

Good Service, lovely Staff, Food was Beautiful, but not enough of Food, my Friend felt very ripped off, as not enough, the Portions were to Small, also the Staff should have asked if we wanted anymore. My Friend was very disappointed with the quality of the Food. They don't mind Paying for it, but not getting enough of it. They honestly felt ripped off, as the Whether they use River Mill again is a different story

2nd time here notices food was very small portioned this time and chopped up finely. Food was cold too and duck pancakes too thin that they disintegrated upon trying to make the roll. Plum sauce or hoisin tasted watery and strange and the prawn dish with some clear sauce and veggies was sickly and tasteless. The beers were sold from multipacks and not draught which is very naughty if not illegal! Had to ask for prawn crackers too as two tiny bowls were given for a party of 13!!! Overall no thank i feel ripped off this time although the staff were brilliant and welcoming enough such a shame! 😕

Poor service waited 45 mins for main after Starter and still wasn't ready, decided to leave and got charged for 2 starters and a bottle of wine £55.00, won't be going again, ended up going to McDonald's.

Ordered from here a few times. Tend to take a long time to arrive and often has food missing. Ordered a large order today and had chop suey missing so rang to let them know. They responded by saying they know that’s not true because they packed the order themselves and our order was their only one (despite taking over 40 minutes). Poor customer service, mediocre food. Pretty dead scran.

I do not recognise it as the same restaurant which has been reviewed before. The food was very poor. The staff were indeed very pleasant and helpful but it was probably the worst Chinese meal I have ever eaten. The starters were meagre and just warm and the duck was dry and unappetising. The main courses were of very similar taste, swimming in sauce and one of the courses was so bad we had to send it back. I would not normally write such a bad review but it is important to let the restaurant know of their customers displeasure.

We've used The Rivermill for years and somehow it's never occurred to me to leave a review, probably because we've just always used them. The food is consistently excellent, we used another local Chinese that was newly opened for a few months because they were repeatedly recommended, but it didn't take long for us to go back to The Rivermill. Staff are always friendly and extremely helpful, delivery is always within the time frame they give and is usually quick unless we order at a very busy time. Honestly don't have anything bad to say. Will definitely remain our favourite Chinese unless something drastic happens!

Popped in for a meal on Friday and it was absolutely stunning! The outdoor area is beautiful and it felt a bit like being on holiday sitting by the river. We’d never eaten here before but will absolutely be back! Highly recommend!
