The Rice Bowl in South Northamptonshire

Ordered takeaway and arrived promptly. Food was very bland and tasteless. Chow mein was badly burnt and tasted awful, you could smell the burnt food and singed noodles as soon as the box was opened. They did make new ones and re reliever so bonus points for that. Spare ribs were extremely fatty with little to no taste and the chicken curry was not great either. We have ordered from here several times and ate inside and find it is a very hit and miss place. Either really tasty or really poor. I think that’s the last time we will order from here now as you just can’t be sure of what you are going to get. Perhaps different chefs and it’s the luck of the draw of what you will be getting. Shame as the only Chinese in Towcester who will deliver.

Fantastic meal and great service. Very relaxing and didn't feel rushed. Will definitely be going back. Chris was a good host.

Excellent Cantonese cuisine, served with a smile. As one of the few Chinese restaurants still offering a dine-in service it was a real treat to visit this one. Four of use were quickly served some starters to share and although had to wait a while for our main dishes it was definitely worth it. My beef in red wine was particularly delicious.

The Rice Bowl is the only sit down Chinese restaurant in Towcester, indeed it is the only one in quite a large area. We were visiting as a family on a Sunday evening. The staff were friendly and welcoming, and the decor was pleasant. There is a main menu that contains more traditionally authentic Chinese cuisine but you can also enjoy anything from the takeaway menu as well. We had a mixture from both and the food was very good and served in generous portions. I will definitely be eating there again.

I celebrated my 22nd wedding anniversary at The Rice Bowl last night and it was a fabulous dining experience. We ordered some traditional Chinese dishes including one which was not included in the menu but as we had pre-ordered, the chef was happy to oblige as they were given time to source the ingredients. For starters, we had wasabi prawns (which lasted 3 seconds before they were demolished) followed by a traditional dried scallop and mock shark’s fin soup. Our mains were a selection of popular dishes including steamed turbot with spring onions, ginger and chilli, crispy roast pork, braised pork belly with yam hotpot, seafood egg custard, spicy stir fried cuttlefish and tender beef in red wine sauce. Dessert was deep fried ice cream in coconut batter. Needless to say, my family and I went away absolutely stuffed and delighted. The staff were all very friendly and efficient too. Thank you for making my anniversary so special!

Fabulous food, staff very friendly and helpful, couldn't do enough for us. The Duck spring rolls are a must. Highly recommended

The Restaurant has a fresh feel with background music adding to the atmosphere. Really friendly staff who are helpful. Food was superb and tasty, all arrived in a timely manner. To note, it is cash only but this was explained upon booking. Will be paying another visit again soon. Highly recommend.

Not been to the restaurant for a few years, Saturday night on payday weekend and we were the only ones in there. Over the next hour, 1 more couple and a family of 4 arrived. From reading the reviews, I was expecting it to be really tidy and brought up to date. Nothing to get excited about and lacks atmosphere, no background music with the lack of people it was kind of uncomfortably quiet. The back of house areas the public see , stairs, toilets etc are really dated and in my opinion not very clean. Very limited menu and looks nothing like the takeaway menu so unfamiliar meals. On booking we were told cash only no cards. The prices on the menu were a bit eye-watering and food for two of us and two small beers was £70. The food was good and portions were OK, on previous visits they bring you prawn crackers to nibble on, nope not now, need to be ordered. Heads up for people reading this review, the couple on the table next to us ordered from the takeaway menu which we didn't know was an option, worth knowing!

Food was good , as was the service , but for two main meals plus one desert ,and two glasses of wine , £ 61 .00 was a bit pricey

I didn’t know what to expect because there are a few negative reviews on here but I took a punt as it’s the only chinese on just eat and I was pleasantly surprised. It tasted really nice, fresh and the delivery driver was really pleasant too!

We just had the best takeaway ever. The food was amazing, everyone commented how beautiful it was and delivered piping hot as well. We all absolutely recommend Rice Bowl Towcester as the best Chinese locally.

I would highly recommend getting takeaway for another Chinese. The food tasted incredibly bland and not authentic. When we get takeaway, it’s to avoid having to cook but we had to put the chicken fried rice in the wok as there was no sesame oil or soy sauce which are literally key with chicken fried rice. The crispy chilli beef also lacked the flavour you would get from other Chinese takeaways in the area; we were required to cook it more to add things to it. If you want an actual Chinese tasting takeaway, go elsewhere

I’ve used this place in years. Tryed to order a take away. Cash only. Nobody has cash these days. I’m off but I’ve heard bad stories about your kitchen anyway. Loads of better lees is great but do t deliver.

Ordered some delivery food this evening from the rice bowl and I had special foo young, it was quite expensive at over £8 and when it turned up was the size of a small egg fried rice and on tasting this it was extremely bland and very watery… in the end I threw it away! What a waste. See pictures attached. I compared the foo young to a chicken chow mein to compare the size

Yummy! They only offer takeaway at the moment. Lots to choose from and hot when it is collected. The staff are pleasant too. The phone line is often extremely busy to the point of giving up. Stick with it or go into the restaurant to order.

Food is usually very good. But just watch out for the shrinking food cartons. Noticed the usual portion size was small and the trays have nearly halved in depth giving only a single layer of food. Bit cheeky!

Just had a take away late on probably the busiest night of the year. Have to say it was better than 110%. Those Chefs must have been " knackered " earlier the number of people ordering ment delays so I ordered late. The prawns were perfection the ribs succulent, the duck, chicken & beef just so ..... For food to be so good having traveled as a take away should not be possible. 5 x STARS. Thank you.

Had an unexpected guest visit, didn't fancy the usual lunch so thought we'd do something different. Glad we did, excellent.

Very disappointed with delivery service tonight got told food would be 45mins to 1 hour turned up near 2 hours late food was cold so delivery driver than drove off with food we have used rice bowl for years called up to complain to be told restaurant guest take priority and nothing they can do ruined my valentine's night completely

Been to the rice bowl for a meal tonight. Food was excellent service was very poor we had been there for 1 hour 2o mins before we got our main meal. Would have had dessert but never got offered. Asked for bill and that took ages to get will not hurry back.

A good, solid Chinese my family use for takeaway. Best one locally, and it’s always decent food which is generously portioned and good value for money. 4/5 because I’ve had much better Chinese elsewhere but not locally

Well what a little gem. Just moved to the area and decided to try a local Chinese takeaway. Not only was the food ready very quickly, but every dish was utterly delicious. Better than any Chinese take away we have had before. Can’t wait to try other dishes. Also, I must mention this, my husband collected our order with cash and inadvertently left £10 more than it cost and the man from the restaurant actually ran after him to give him back his money. How honest is that! We are definitely going to be regulars there as it is by far a firm favourite from the off. Well done!

Had our kung po chicken and noodles delivered. It was all so so tasty! I've previously had sweet and sour king prawn balls and egg fried rice again delicious!

Ok for a general Chinese meal, they will not do a typical take away curry inside, only for a takeaway, one of our party asked for the 'Special Curry' but they couldn't do that despite there being a big party of us. Bit shortsighted.

Ordered the Chinese to find the noddles burnt!! Chicken was all gunky in the curry and was either red/black. Chips were not cooked. Waste of money and wouldn’t feed my dog it. If you want a good Chinese go too lees cottage down the road!

Stopped off on way home from Milton Keynes and found this gem of a place Really light, tasty food on all 3 course Had the peking set menu and ate it all without feeling overstuffed Thanks

After a couple of years away decided tonight to have a treat with a takeaway delivered. All I can say is if you are hungry, dont bother. 45 minutes was supposed to be delivery time. 1 1/2 later and a phone call it arrived. Stone cold. What a waste of time and money. Will not return.

Ordered a meal for the family. The restaurant within the building is so loud the person on the phone can’t hear the orders, I was shouting down the phone and she could only just hear me, after me shouting 2 of a meal we still only received 1! Now after waiting 40 mins for food to be delivered we have now been left without one meal so are now going to have to go and drive to towcester to get the other meal as we can’t just leave one person without food!

Had a horrible takeaway from this place. Paid over £50 for two and it was tasteless and full of grease. The small prawns were like cardboard and totally inedible, we had to pick them out. No-one should have to eat such rubbish these days. We will never set foot in this place again, there are other options in the town.

Worst Chinese takeaway I’ve had! Couldn’t eat much of my meal due to it dripping in oil. My normal Chinese takeaway was shut so I was recommended by a friend this place as they were joining me for dinner, and they have equally said how they will no longer be returning due to the state of the meal. So disappointing

I ordered a take away at 6pm turned up at 720pm Luke warm . I called straight away to complain as this was not the first time but for some reason my husband thinks it has the best satay chicken so we go back . The lady on the phone said the manager would call me and not to eat the food someone would collect it . After twenty minutes I telephoned again she made a phone call and spoke in a different language after three minutes the pioneer was disconnected . I then got into my car and drove down to the rice bowl to complain. She wasn’t interested gave me a refund when I said my food was cold and that I was unhappy she put her hand up in the air and said I don’t care !!!!!!! I have never been met with such rudeness in a restaurant. Never again

Visited for a birthday dinner, have eaten here several times midweek where they offer a good value for money menu and offer, however at weekends they hike the prices up for poor quality food. The mixed starter is a joke for the price. Very disappointing.

Visited on a Sunday evening, it’s a small place but nice atmosphere. The starter was crispy aromatic lamb, gorgeous! The mains were sizzling and the beef had a kick to it with the black pepper sauce. Very attentive staff. They also do a takeaway menu. I’d use this place again.

All you can eat menu was superb for the family. A good choice on offer and all freshly cooked. Will definitely visit again.

Had a lovely meal here, received a friendly welcome from the hosts. Tsingtao always my choice of drink. Soup and a sizzling dish served quickly and efficiently. They also do a buffet option for two or more. Will be returning very soon.

This is our go-to Chinese, amazing food, well priced and the one thing you have to get EVERY time is the crispy chicken in chilli peppercorn salt!

Delicious meal, each dish is different. Good service. Recommend the sizzling dishes as it has lots of flavour, vegetables, seafood and crispy noodles

What can I say! This is a very very good Chinese restaurant. Authentic feel, amazing food with perfect service. Absolutely faultless. My thanks to the owners. I totally recommend this restaurant to anyone who loves Chinese food and especially if you are vegetarian like me, whilst not a massive menu, the food is amazing!

My first order from The Rice Bowl has been a home delivery. The food was warm, full of flavour and tasted freshly cooked. The portion sizes were fine and I feel a little bit piggy for finishing it all. The delivery arrived in the time frame given; order placed on a Friday evening during busy hours. Take Away recommended, I look forward to trying the restaurant.

We have lived in the local area for 17 years and always noticed the Rice Bowl, without popping in.

We recently moved to the area and hadn’t tried any of the takeaways in Towcester, we found The Rice Bowl online and took a chance.

We popped in after night on town for a takeaway and such was the quality we returned twice more.very nice flavours and prompt service.

Went years ago and it was OK, went twice this month and its been very good! Monday to Thursday they do all you can eat for £13.95 each. Its a good one though as you order the dishes of the banquet menu and they cook it fresh ( the small print does say 1.5hrs max meal times for the all you can eat and if you leave more than 25% of a dish they will charge you full price. But I don't blame them trying to stop all day eaters or food wasters! Not sure if they would police this). You don't get Duck pancakes but you cant expect that included at this price ( you can order them off the main menu if you want).

I have to be a little careful with Chinese (Coeliac) however I explained the problem chose carefully and my partner and I had a lovely meal we could share with out any of the nasty after effects which can sometimes occur when you think you have eaten gluten free. Excellent will visit again if in Towcester.

We ignored the 'all you can eat' menu deal and ordered won ton soup (very good home made won ton), spring rolls, steamed whole sea bass (delicious), fabulous pak choy with garlic sauce and wonderfully fresh egg fried rice.

Good food and service, staff very pleasant and it was lovely and warm on a very cold night, most welcoming.

This was our first & last visit to The Rice Bowl! Food was edible but nothing special & most of the dishes tasted the same. The older lady that came to take our order just stood in front of us & said "yes"!!!! No good evening, can I take your order, no welcoming smile either! The older man just stood & watched us eating, was very uncomfortable! The young man that brought our drinks over was very pleasant so credit to him only!

We visited this place with friends in early August 2017. We had booked a reservation but on the night , it was pretty quiet. This suited us as we like to have a chat with friends and some restaurants are noisy. The rice bowl was just the right amount of ambiance which we required.

Encontramos este restaurante, pero estaban un poco preocupado por ir como los comentarios eran muy variadas. Sin embargo, no teníamos que habernos preocupado. El servicio era estupendo y la comida era deliciosa.

We arrived very late and were well welcomed, served efficently and food was very tasty and well displayed. It can be describe as a gastronomic chinese restaurant.

Absolutely appalling, I've never been treated so bad in all my life, being told off for not eating everything off of my plate, so rude, food isn't even that good and I love Chinese food, I definitely wouldn't call it an all you can eat buffet as you can only pick what you can completely finish therefore you can't try a variety, also how they stand there and watch you eat makes you feel so uncomfortable, wouldn't recommend them, there's a lot better out there if you want Chinese

Lovely first experience here and worth a visit but you may want to chose a set menu as I got a bit carried away and consequently the bill was a big one x the food was delicious and the staff very helpful. Have lived in Towcester for 6 years and not found this little gem until now. We will go back again.

We have just had a takeaway from the Rice Bowl which we were extremely disappointed with. Two of our three dishes were, if I'm honest, inedible. The chicken with cashew and yellow bean sauce has left me with a horrible coating in my mouth and feeling quite sick. The crispy chilli beef was very bland and leathery rather than crispy and the egg fried rice had no evidence of any egg in it. From the reviews I've seen, if they are genuine, it seems the restaurant meals get good reviews but the takeaway not so good. I will definitely not be using this takeaway again!!

Have eaten their takeaway on a number of occasion's over the years and I've never been disappointed. Really good Chinese food. would recommend.

Good service, nice food, reasonably priced, managed to fit us in even though we hadn't booked a talbe.

We arrived at 1.30pm on Saturday lunchtime, the restaurant was open and entirely empty - not one customer. We asked if we could have a table and the lady apparently in charge said "we close at 2 so you'd have to be quick". We about turned, at which she said - "oh, I don't mean to hurry you" - I'm sorry madam, you absolutely did.. We went to The Plough instead. I cannot imagine why you open a restaurant if at 1.30pm you turn customers away when you are empty. How pointless!

Recently refurbished in classic 1985 wallpaper the establishment is clean and the staff understand the principles of being restauranteurs unlike many others who deem this to be their trade...once sat and admiring the fish in the tank (were they to be my starters) no...the food came out as ordered in streams as one was most hungry...and one left completely satisfied...the infernal small plastic spears being replaced by the fork ensured not a morsel was left and the pristine white table cloth was dotted with the remnants of a fine meal..highly recommend this amazing oriental establishment ....

We visited The Rice Bowl as my mum loves Chinese food and was treating us. We did the all you can eat buffet. We had an assortment of starters all of which were delicious. There is a variety of main courses, not huge but a nice selection. We couldn't fault anything, tasty food, well presented and full of flavour. The service was good, quick and very helpful. Will definitely visit again.

The food was mediocre, the portions were a little small and the special fried rice wasn't particularly big or full of meats either which was disappointing. I ordered it to collect and I was able to pick it up really quickly! I'm not 100% sure if I will order from here again.

They have an eat lots deal off a set menu. Visited on Tuesday evening to find that the restaurant has a great deal Mon - Thurs £12.95 all you can eat, great choices to select from we shared 4 starters 2main dishes rice and vegetables. The food was excellent quality and freshly cooked the wine is well priced and we thoroughly enjoyed our evening and will be back next Tuesday..

Went here for a birthday celebration and enjoyed the buffet offer. Very extensive choice of dishes, freshly cooked and generous portions.

Haven't had a takeaway for a while from here. We had it delivered and was told 40-45 mins delivery time. Over an hour later it turned up, only ordered 4 items but one was totally wrong nothing like what was ordered and the portions were extremely small. Portion size and quality seems to be very variable.

We have had a couple of take always here over the last couple of months...service and standards have vastly improved, lovely meals! Will be ordering here from now on!

We were travelling late and dropped in at 11.00pm. Although they were about to close they provided us with an excellent meal and were very friendly.

The best Chinese take away and restaurant for miles around. I travel 8 miles to have a great take away because it's far superior to my local Chinese.

El restaurante es muy sencillo, la decoración es muy normal, pero hay que decir que son muy serviciales, es un restaurante chino autentico, la comida es muy buena y está muy bien elaborada, recomendaría el pato lackeado.Correcto sin ser nada espectacular.

The food wasn't bad and priced quite well. But found one of the members of staff (think it was the owner) was a bit rude "what do you want?" Among other tbings. I am a stickler for manners, especially with a customer facing role. Think I'd use them again after a few beers to take home, but wouldn't go to eat there again.

Quality of food was good, staff were friendly.Downfall was amount of food for the price. 20 pounds each me and my partner shared a rice and had a meat platter each,a pint and a spring roll each. This was not a good deal considering the tiny portion sizes!

Tried the restaurant recently. Had a set meal at £23 per person. Everything was ok and typical chinese set menu fare but portions were small.1spring roll per person, 2 little pancakes each for the crispy duck. Even the cucumber was in short supply!! We came away saying that although the staff were very pleasant and the surroundings attractive we thought it poor value for money.Dont choose this restaurant if you have a healthy appetite

Just had dinner at this restaurant. It was our first visit and will not be our last. The menu isn't as vast as the normal Chinese Restaurants, but there are some very different meals listed, too.We had Dragon Scallops and Prawns in a spicy sea sauce. It was delicious. The food being delivered to other tables looked equally as flavourful too. Obviously a place frequented by regular guests due to the way people were greeted or said goodbye to. Always a good sign!! Service was excellent, decor is fresh and very clean. I would imagine the family run this restaurant as there is no 'corporate' uniform code.

Recently visited newly refurbished Rice Bowl. Chose the eat as much as you want option. Excellent. Will definitely be back soon.

Went here on a work team meal, food was excellent and quick service. We were the only ones in this side of the room so did feel a bit like we were the only ones in the whole place which I personally don't like, I like to have a bit of hustle and bustle going on around me, but that's just personal preference. All in all a good night and great food.

Why o why did we decide to try anything different from Lees cottage.... The take away was poor. Took over an hour 1/2 to be delivered up the road. Rice was plain and dull, veg spring rolls portion was all of 4 and the rest of the meal was a salty disappointment. Never again.

I came back recently after hearing the place had a face lift. Place is much smarter looking now. I was the first to walk through that evening was quiet at first, but it got fully packed later on. Good food as before. Some new items, tried a new dessert, I loved it, husband wasn't so keen. Will bring friends back again!

Very hit and miss with the person who answers the phone. This time I found I had waited for my delivery for over and hour and I re-phoned. I was told by another employee that they were busy and my order would be a further 30 mins at least. One & a half hours for a small order is totally unacceptable; regardless of how"busy" they are. At the very least, advise the customer of this delay BEFORE they order !!!!

Being our local Chinese takeaway, the food is always good wether its a takeaway or we sit down to eat. Would recommend to anyone.

We came here for my wife's, grandma's 103rd Birthday and they made us feel really welcome. Although the service was slow, we were in no rush. The staff were very attentive and insured the guest of honour was well looked after. Can recommend but not if you're in a rush! Oh and the food was excellent!
