We enjoyed an excellent stay last week. The whole experience was 5*. Great selection of beers and wines, whilst the quality of food was Michelin star. We booked directly and the price was better than booking.com and the package included a discounted evening meal. The hotel was clean, with a good ambiance relaxed classy feel. The bead room had recently been refurbished and the bed was X-large and comfy. The Eggs Florentine breakfast was also superb.

Had a meal there with a party of colleagues for a celebration. Worst meal I've had for ages. Main course (steak) was luke warm as were all the accompaniments - other guests were the same, other than the fish, which was hot, but mostly skin & awful. Venison was overcooked and nearly cold. I sent back my steak, which was returned to me warmed up - unfortunately it was tasteless and everything else was still cold. If I had not been dining in a party, the meal would have been returned again to the kitchen. All side orders were also luke warm. For dessert my 6 year old granddaughter makes a better crumble.

Eight of us (incl 2 small kids) had lunch here and enjoyed the lovely meals which were all beautifully presented and really tasty. The kids both had small portions of fish & chips & ate every bit too but this isn't really an ideal place for kids. Bit of a long wait for drinks and I do wish restaurants wouldn't automatically add a 10% service charge (I'd happily pay 10% here but think it should be the customer's choice depending on quality & service). Lovely surroundings and pretty grounds. Prices not excessive but typical for a good restaurant. Lovely place for a special family meal.

The food was excellent, tasty, well presented and the service was good. Cosy and clean, possibly on the more expensive side but certainly well worth it.

As I live locally eaten here several times, the Sunday lunch is particularly good. This time we opted to eat here on Xmas day for lunch and it was really lovely. As it's the second year we've done this and the price has increased to considerably more per head, I was initially disappointed to be shown to a table in the marquee rather than the main restaurant. That said, after we settled in to our second bottle of wine and the pianist (nice touch) kicked in, I didn't much care! The smoked salmon, and orange chocolate fondant deserve special mention, but the star of the show was the beef fillet with fois gras and black truffle. Oh my goodness it was delicious. The trio of mini deserts turned out to be not so mini, and I discovered that I didn't hate Xmas pud anymore, bit of a revelation. All I could manage was to nibble a couple of dry crackers from the cheese course and skipped the mince pies entirely, no room at the inn! The gifts of scented candles for the ladies and whiskey miniatures and tumblers for the men was a nice surprise at the end. Thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and would highly recommend. Same time next year?

I visited this restaurant with a few friends on a weekday lunchtime, and knowing that we were on a timetable we pre-ordered the food. Arriving on time we were shown straight to the table which was nicely presented. The dining room was empty apart from us and 3 "ladies lunching" which was a bit surprising so near Xmas. There was a gas open fire in the heath and the room was warm and nice and airy with a view out over the small grounds, but my impression was that the whole place was a bit stuck in the 1950s with matching decor, maybe suiting those who could remember those times! The first courses took about 20 minuted to arrive so we enjoyed our drinks and waited. When the food arrived it was nicely presented and hot and well cooked if a little small in portion size, and well served by the two staff. The mains (after a delay of about 20 minutes) again were hot and well cooked and more generous in size and most of us cleared our plates. By now we were well over the hour mark (despite the pre-ordering) and had to ask them to quicken up a bit for the desserts which were not quite up to the standard of the first two courses (some looked shop bought). By the time we paid the bill we had been there an hour and a half which I think is too long - fine if you are going for a leisurely meal to take your time (but beware of the "hush" due to lack of clientele - may be more vibrant on an evening?). The bill came to just over £30 per head for 3 courses and 1 drink each which isn't particularly cheap (that included their 10% service charge which was added to the bill), although generally the food was good. Being set in its own grounds the hotel and restaurant has a quiet air about it and maybe the slow pace and quiet ambience suits some people, but if you are looking for a lively vibe then go somewhere else. If however you just want to take a while over a meal with no particular timetable, and want some good English food then this might just be the place for you.

Lovely location shame about the prices for what portion sizes you got. Found it very expensive for what we ordered. Would go again for coffee as views over the lake are lovely but would not eat.
