Great customer service and lovely food. When we arrived the place was empty apart from 2 children sat at tables playing games on the iPads/tablets. Although they were polite, the noise from the games was annoying at times. Food was amazing, the only problem was the samosas came out cold, which considering they were on the starter platter which everything else was hot, was a bit weird. We raised this and the young girl said she would let the kitchen know. Service was great, everyone was serving with a smile.

Having eaten in the restaurant numerous times previously over a number of years, had our first takeaway/ delivery from here tonight . Ordered directly over the phone which was refreshing, order arrived early, lovely delivery person, all food was piping hot. The deep fried squid starter was disappointing. Lovely fresh squid, however, let down by a total lack of seasoning/ oily/ not at all crispy Sui mai was not available, so changed our order to a chicken satay starter also. Really good quality chicken, perfectly cooked with a spicy satay sauce, (sauce was very oily however, once the excess oil was drained off, incredibly tasty) Did not realise how huge the main course portions were! Will share between 2 next time! We had 2 chicken szechuan, 2 boiled rice and 2 sides of vegetables. Extra vegetables not needed as a lot of veg included with the chicken szechuan. So much flavour in all of the mains and perfectly cooked/ seasoned Prawn crackers were fresh and top quality Really enjoyed the food, would highly recommend, just as amazing as when eating in the restaurant Can't wait to order a takeaway again/ come and eat in the restaurant Thank you the Regent You are still the best of all the Chinese restaurants/ takeaways in the area!

Absolutely awful, delivery was 40 mins late to start off with. Got the order finally, had to actifry the chips because they were soggy and dry. Noodles were absolutely disgusting, not even a word for them! The chicken, was the WORST chicken we have ever tasted, soggy again. My boyfriend was picking at his chow mein, the chicken was so hard. Both of us have chucked a whole plate away, £23 down the drain and that’s overpriced anyway. Absolutely disgusting, avoid at all costs. So tempted to tell them come collect the food from the bin and give us a whole refund, absolutely disgraceful! DO NOT RECOMMEND!

My wife and I came to this restaurant on Saturday evening around 2145 when the opening hours stated that they were open until 2300 to be told we could have a table under duress. Where the waitress proceeded to slat the cutlery around on the table been set for us, the final straw was been barked at there is "NO SET MENU". So we walked out as it was obvious that they didn't want to serve us, have ate here before food great service awful.

I visited here with my partner on a Saturday night- we didn’t book but nipped in an hour before and reserved a table with no problem (nipped round the corner for a gin at the ‘Ten Green Bottles’, lovely gin cocktails, but that’s another review...) We opted for set menu ‘E’ and were really pleased with the food- chicken and sweetcorn soup that was really meaty, BBQ ribs (sauce was gorgeous but ribs maybe a little on the gristly side?), duck pancakes which were gorgeous and loads of meat and then 3/4 main dishes (chilli king prawns were absolutely beautiful). Food was piping hot when served. We could not fault the service we received at this restaurant- everything you asked for was delivered so promptly, barely any waiting time at all and really friendly staff. The restaurant itself is sort of ‘old school’ and quite basic- did this matter to us? Nope not at all given how good the food was. I have been to a few Chinese restaurants in the locality where you can get set menus and I would this place absolutely holds its own, loads of choice and really tasty food with great service to boot. Will definitely be visiting again and will definitely be recommending to family and friends!

Popped in for a slap up dinner with my son who is at Uni here. The place was virtually empty but that didn't bother us. It's been years since I had a Chinese like this and it was a nostalgic experience. The décor and food really reminded me of my local Chinese when I was a kid in the 70's. Good portions. Food was exactly like I remembered from all those years ago - which was okay, as it was back then. It shows how some establishments have moved on, this place is stuck in a time warp, but I kinda liked it. I would return.

The service was initially too quick but it was half 9 on good Friday so i expected they were eager to get done but with a polite word a slower pace was adopted so it was not an issue.Staff all pleasant and helpful too.I will eat there again .Glad we tried it.

They have 2 menus, one for regular Chinese food (tailored for the European tastebuds) and a Cantonese menu which has the sort of food you would get in Hong Kong, that menu has dishes like tofu hot pot, chicken feet, roast duck, soya sauce roast chicken, rice noodles in a broth etc. I ordered from this menu as I’m Chinese and I have to say it was very good food. They gave us complimentary lotus seed soup with pork and also Chinese tea on the house. The staff said that menu was mainly for the Chinese students who come often.

If I am honest I probably would never have chosen to visit this restaurant. However a friend read the reviews on this website and suggested it would be a good choice. On arrival it did seem a little dated. We were made to feel very welcome from the start. Staff showed us to a table and we were given menus and prawn crackers to nibble on while we awaited the last member of our group to arrive. She had been struggling to park, immediately staff informed her how to get to the car park at the rear. They also met her on the car park and showed her into the restaurant via the back door. We chose a vegetarian set meal for two and added in a chicken dish. The food was delicious and ample for the three of us to share. Although we were the last to leave we never felt rushed. The moral of the story here is don't judge a book by its cover! Give it a go and I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

Dined here as we fancied a change from our usual Chinese restaurant. We arrived without reservation and were seated promptly and given menus. The restaurant is dated in its decor and set up; feels like you are sitting in someone's living room, but it had a friendly feel to it. Menu is very extensive. We chose set meal F between us. I noticed that the prices in the menu are higher than those stated on their website. Food was very good and we enjoyed all the courses which were plentiful. Only minor criticisms would be that the front door was constantly in use whilst staff gave out orders for deliveries. Our ice cream dessert for our daughter was still covered with a chunk of ice from the freezer and was served on a saucer rather than a dessert plate which made trying to cut into the rock solid ice cream difficult (plate too small, dessert too hard). Bill came to £50 with a round of drinks included. We took some of the food home which was kindly boxed up for us. All in all it was a nice meal, but felt for the money, I would have liked to be sitting in a more modern restaurant that matched the quality of the food.

The Regent is a fixture in Newcastle Under Lyme. It has been around at least 30 years as far as I can recall. To stand out in a crowded market for Chinese food, you have to be good. The Regent is excellent. It's worth travelling to eat at.I had my last birthday dinner there, in a party of four. The menu is much more diverse than most places with lots of interesting dishes I've seen nowhere else. The set menus are all good and very well priced. In a party of four, three of us went for a set menu (F, if you are interested!) and the fourth opted out and went off piste. This can be a recipe for disaster, with people being served out of sync and waiting for food to arrive. The Regent staff were more than on top of the problem. Everything ran smoothly.Set menus can be a bit niggardly and penny pinching. Not here. Bring your appetite! The cooking is a good cut above most Chinese places. It has a distinct feeling of home cooking and everything arrived absolutely fresh from the wok. Highlights were the lamb with ginger - normally a bit pedestrian, but here it was really tasty and rich, the king prawns in garlic - unusual and aromatic, and the excellent Yung Chow rice.Service was friendly and attentive without becoming oppressive.Although this restaurant is a little more expensive than others in the area, the standards of service, cooking and atmosphere make for a different class of meal.Very thoroughly recommended.

Having lived with Cantonese friends for a few years in Canada, and being accustomed to their own cooking of authentic dishes, it took me years to find a restaurant I felt satisfied with in England. I particularly enjoy the chili and garlic fried squid, the chicken and vegetables in black bean sauce, and my partner (who only ever eats sweet and sour chicken!!) sampled a couple dishes normally he'd avoid, and he loved them!!! Will continue to go there with family and friends for many years to come.

Make a change from the take-away, try the Regent Chinese in Newcastle town centre. One sure sign is I've never seen it empty. Another is the the number of Chinese students from the local Universities eating there too! Walk in and the first impression might be somewhat small and dated decor, but take a seat. The owner and staff are so friendly. They really try to make your visit enjoyable. The food and value for money are excellent; my favourites are the Hot Sour soup followed by the House Rice special, but I've never had a bad one yet (we use the take-way regularly). You won't be disappointed.

An excellent chicken in green pepper and black bean sauce, partner had monkfish delicately spiced, superb soft noodles with a very deep flavour, friendly, crisp house white bottle of white wine nicely priced at £13 - as other reviewers have said, if you can get past the décor which is 'dated' to say the least, and concentrate on the food you'll have a very enjoyable visit !

Like others have said the decor is a little dated but the food is delicious, probably the best Chinese in the area. The staff are friendly and the owner can't do enough for you. Highly recommend.

When we walked in it was disappointing with dated decor . Not much to look out but all that was forgotten by a very friendly welcome and excellent food. The service and food was amazing. Will go back and would recommend

I've been living in this area for 3 years now. Tried various Chinese restaurants but a lot of them seem to focus more on quantity rather than quality. While there are a lot of all you can eat places around, they all serve very generic dishes that never excite one's palate. The Regent is definitely a step above all others. Coming from Hong Kong myself, the Regent brings to me a quality I yearn for - a taste of home. Every dish is meticulously prepared to not only taste good, but also be authentic. Service is also exceptionally courteous and friendly. I'd not hesitate to recommend the Regent to anyone.

Unfortunately our experience of this take away service was not good at all. We had bbq spare ribs, with a bbq sauce, chips and a chicken in sherry with egg fried rice. The ribs were dry, the chips were cold and I had to warm them up in the microwave. The bbq sauce had so much vinegar in it that it made my eyes water which isn't a true bbq chinese sauce to me, it was more like a dark sweet and sour with loads of vinegar in it. My partners sherry chickien was bland with no sherry taste at all and he had to put soya sauce on it to give it taste. The price was more expensive than a takeawayWe decided to order from a restaurant assuming that the quality would be better but unfortunately it wasn't. Also we had to pay delivery even though we only live a mile and a half away, of which most take aways don't charge within a 3 mile radius. Very disappointed with this meal as we had been looking forward to it all day

I travel to china on business and i am not aware that carrots are quite so common an ingredient in chinese food. We had 4 main courses 3 of which had a high carrot content. Szechuan prawns (with 60% carrot content). New on one me. Duck was disappointing. Looke good but was laid on top of a well hidden cabbage bed meaning only a meagre portion actually on plate. Lots of cheap pre-chopped overcooked veg and not a lot of what you would like. The welcome was indifferent at best. We said we had a reservation and a silent hand was waved at a table "over there". Staff easy to attract but not attentive. Everything was hard to explain. Even sparkling water took some explaining. We usually tip but not here. No large bottles of water. So more expensive bottles for one arrived. Wine we ordered was not available from supplier. No hand dryer in loos and no towels. So people can't be washing their hands. It's was "ok". We weren't ill. Would I go back? Not given a choice. And there is a few to choose from.

Good quality at an affordable price. The Regent provides delicious Chinese cuisine with a range of tasty dishes. I would recommend the barbeque pork as being particularly excellent. The restaurant is at the edge of the town centre and is not as busy as it should be. Whenever I visit it is populated by regulars which shows the consistent quality it delivers. The decor is a bit dated but if you are looking for a great meal this is the place to go.

This is the second occasion that we have visited this restaurant; the first time being some 4 years ago.The restaurant is not large and occupies a single room on the ground floor of an old building on the northern outskirts of Newcastle under Lyme town centre. I'm told that there is also a room upstairs for functions, though I've not seen it. Apart from a few characters and prints on the walls, the room lacks any Chinese character or soul. The tables are fairly well spaced and they are set for 4 people or larger parties of about 8. The menus are not extensive though they provide you with the normal chinese staples. The food arrived fairly quickly but the best that can be said about it is that it was ok. The house special starters were tired looking, a bit dry and the presentation was decidedly average. The main courses of steak with ginger and spring onions and sizzling steak Chinese-style were a little better but the rice was too 'dry'.I'm sure that many people do like this place and given the fact that the diners there tonight were a very cosmopolitan bunch, including a Chinese family, perhaps I am doing the place a disservice. However, the resaurant does need to improve its performance. I don't think it has been redecorated in the past 4 years, it plays contemporary western pop music in the background and the food is not as exciting in taste or presentation as it should be. It should stick to and embrace its culture. Unfortuately for the Regent there are other Chinese restaurants in Newcastle that do have the necessary qualities and they will benefit.

I was there with my family. The service was excellent. The atmosphere is absolutely beautiful. This was my first visit but it will not be the last. The food was really good. The soup came with two different meat, chicken and shrimp but I believe the base of the soup was the same. I enjoyed the soup but chicken was a bit dry. I ordered noodles and two orders coconut rice one egg fried rice both very tasty. The main course ordered , duck, 2 prawns and one chicken dishes but I later realised mum’s dish was chicken as well as mine but suppose to be a prawn dish. I asked, the staff to change mum’s dish. I wasn’t happy with my chicken dish but I had it, duck and prawn dishes were very tasty. We didn’t have any desserts but beer was pretty good be honest. We were full and loved the taste. Thank you Art of Siam I’ll be back !!!
