Booked 2 rooms in December for a Christmas walking break. We were on the top floor in the Manor House which looked nice but in practical terms wasn't a great layout with not a lot of hanging space for a 3 day stay and not a lot of places to put things . Also the lighting between it and the pub via the carpark was not great . We had issues on all 3 nights over wine orders where we did not get the wine we ordered and twice got a far dearer bottle and the waitress said I showed you the bottle and you said OK, she was very pushy about it all . I think if you used bin numbers on the wine it would resolve the issue. On a more positive note we ate in on all 3 nights and all our meals were excellent.

A warm welcome on a chilly day! Good friendly service, a range of real ales (very local and Thwaites both good) and a pot of excellent tea for our designated driver. We were ushered in to a snug near the fire and easily engaged other guests in conversation. Beer "taster" was offered in a miniature glass tankard!

Busy pub at the weekends, we was walking in the area and called in on a Saturday, staff were very accommodating finding us and our pooch a table without any fuss....service was great and ambience and food was lovely, maybe not the cheapest but it was nice, great location and plenty of seating outside in the summer months.

The location was very picturesque, right next to a beautiful river and arched bridge. With plenty of space for the kids to run around and explore. Loads of good spots to throw stones in the river. The selection and quality of food was very high. The rooms felt a little bit dated though and could do with modernising.

Our family has stayed here for 3 nights every Christmas for 14 years, spending on average £1800 each year and thought it was wonderful value until this Thwaites company took over 2 years ago The first year with them was passable as they were finding their feet, this year was an experience never to be repeated by us and many other customers. The Christmas dinner was shocking for all of us. Food served cold and dried up in cold dishes, starters the same and having to be returned. My dinner consisted of 1 potatoe, 2 pieces of beef and half a carrot!!!!! My daughters fish was served cold and dried out in a cold dish We booked lunch for 2.30 but everyone was made to sit and be served altogether like cattle when it suited the management. Only the waitress made it passable by returning with warmed up food from the kitchen after its return. Vegetables costs next to nothing, this wasnt fine dining it was an outrageous rip off and my family would like the return of the £420 that we were charged. Other evening meals were the same, no vegetables and stew with tough meat The guest lounge had furniture removed and wood stacked from floor to as high as could be reached along two walls and next to an open fire. I wonder what the Fire Brigade would say to this on inspection, no fire safety there The room in the cottage used to have Christmas feel to greet guests, with mince pies, a card, and a christmas tree with lights. With Thwaites nothing, the rooms stripped to bare minimum in every room A business and customer experience ruined by Thwaites, not to be repeated by us or any of our friends and family Pauline Bradley-Sharp B.E.M.

Lovely old pub, fabulously friendly and helpful staff in a beautiful village. Bedrooms are newly refurbished and very nicely done. Excellent bar with great selection of well kept beers. The only criticism is that the Red Lion is really let down with the planning around the restaurant. Only two out of three days the croissants at breakfast were very, very stale. Probably a day or more old. The staff hadn't noticed and didn't really seem to care. Things run out and aren't replenished. The bigger issue is at dinner. Running out of one or two main courses is one thing. Running out of many is a bit poor. But being told that the restaurant has run out of green vegetables and instrad being offered mushy peas as an accompaniment to a roast would be comical if it wasn't so inexcusable. So in summary: go, stay ,have a drink or two but find somewhere else to eat until they sort the kitchen out.

I booked a meal here for my husbands birthday as we stayed locally and it was recommended. We both chose the festive menu, opting for no starter, just a main and a desert. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a huge disappointment. We ordered drinks, lemon tonics, but got bitter lemon. In hindsight we shouldve left here.....Our main arrived, a small but appetising plate. But....half an undercooked carrot(that's all the carrot you get) and 3 dry, leathery roast potatoes, probably left over from lunchtime and 3 (yes, seriously 3) hard Brussels sprouts each...well, what can I say...utterly disgusted that any chef would see fit to serve that. Not only tiny portions, which I suppose isn't the end of the world, but the standard of cooking, beggars belief. I've never complained about a meal before but felt I couldn't lie to the waitress who asked if we enjoyed our meal....I did feel sorry for her but she handled it very well. The lady we spoke to about it after just didn't get my complaint about the cooking, just repeated it's smaller portions because it's part of a 3 course meal. She offered to charge us for 1 meal...and although I felt it wasn't worth paying anything, I agreed to pay the £25. Yes...I was stung!! Needless to say...we won't be returning even if we visit the area again. I'm upset for my husband more than anything as it's not often we get to have a meal on our own.

lovely bar and drinks, nice staff, great room, lovely breakfast - well served. Superb location, absolutely beautiful. When trying to book online, i was presented with a 10% discount option which i tried but never got the code by email so called the hotel directly. I was told I would still be better off booking on the webpage which i did - with a discount. But, being a little old fashioned, I think if a potential guest calls up to book it would be far better to do it in person than directly back to a website. One small quibble - on check out, the payment machine is presented with a tip option. That's on the room bill. Sorry but it's the not USA - this is the UK and this tipping thing isn't cool. have and will leave a tip at the bar for good service but adding this extra request isn't cool. Monday 11th November 2024 The Red Lion Hotel is a 16th-century country inn on the banks of the River Wharfe, near Burnsall Bridge. The village of Burnsall is in Wharfdale, a charming area of the Yorkshire Dales. The Hotel stands on the site of a medieval tavern called the Hopping Hall, which was bought by the Crown in 1531. The inn was owned by the same family from 1991 until 2021, when it was purchased by Daniel Thwaites. In 2023, the Red Lion underwent a six-figure renovation of its historic manor house. The renovation converted the manor house's 11 bedrooms into eight larger spaces, including three family rooms, four signature doubles, and one large feature room. The design combines rustic oak furniture. Great place, great atmosphere and well worth a visit.

We stayed in one of the cottages as we have done previously as we like the space and views. Firstly, the niggles… parking outside the cottages is tight and in some cases very difficult to get in and out of without causing damage to cars or misc ironmongery in situ. Yes, “it’s a good job there’s a large carpark” as the receptionist said rather condescendingly, but as the spaces are there and unloading of stuff is required, it’s inevitable that cottage guests attempt these spaces and end up regretting it. Our other niggle was the breakfast team weren’t as on the ball. There was no natural yoghurt during our 3 night stay, bowls had run out and not been replenished (the staff knew but as it was approaching the later stage of the breakfast window, they’d ignored the matter) and breakfast generally was not the slick operation we’d experienced before. We had lovely meals in the snug and in the restaurant, although the snug is small (3 tables) so if two tables were being used by couples dining and one by a group just drinking (as was the case), the noise disturbance was unpleasant. On to the positives, the cottages are very well equipped and serviced to an above & beyond level each day. The staff in the bar and restaurant were all efficient & engaging. It’s a lovely place in a beautiful setting with a friendly vibe offering varied & quality food. We’d recommend and would revisit.

Stayed at the Red Lion because of it's fabulous location in Burnsall, Yorkshire Dales. Also the Web photos looked really good. In reality our room felt somewhat tired and in need of some upgrading/modernisation. The beds were lovely and comfortable with nice linen and soft white towels for the bathroom. Breakfast was excellent with a cooked full English plus an assortment of juices, cereals, croissants, toast etc. Service was OK but could have been a little more welcoming Midweek food service was busy, a lovely dinning room, but the bar area gets quiet once people finish eating- so limited atmosphere I'd say. The food however was excellent and fairly reasonably priced. So a nice place to stay but our particular room made it feel rather overpriced.

Really thoughtful drinks facilities in the rooms (decaf drinks were a welcomed surprise) fresh milk available from reception in a mini flask and could be replenished when needed. Fantastic shower. The hotel accessed a path which ran from the pub along the river, so we had a lovely evening stroll up to Hebden suspension bridge. An easy stroll but not wheelchair or buggy friendly in places. Went through Burnsall on the way back from Bolton Abbey and spotted just how pretty it was with the river Wharfe running through and the stone Bridge over the river path down to hebden metal bridge so we knew we would go back and visit. The red lion is a hotel as well as a pub/ restaurant & holds a prime position right next to the river. It has a huge beer garden, and we were expecting to have to sit outside but our furry boys were allowed in ... well done red lion for not discriminating against pet owners. Its also sensible not to lose their business , so van never understand how more venues dont have this approach. We had garlic & thyme chicken breast breast with the best red cabbage, yorkshire pud and gravy I've tasted, cauliflower cheese, mashed turnip, roasties & green veg. And have to say it was one of the best Sunday dinners we've eaten. We really wanted a sweet ... but just didn't hav room. It was excellent quality food and quite enough on your plate. On the standards of the food, would definitely stay in the hotel and lap up those views as well as the food

I booked a table for six at the restaurant located at The Red Lion, as a Mothers Day treat for my wife and our family. The country pub, hotel and restaurant is located in the heart of Burnsall; a charming little village in the Yorkshire Dales. On sunny days, the village is a great location from which to use as a starting point, head off and enjoy walks, such as along the River Wharfe, explore and take in some beautiful scenes and then return this 16th Century Inn to enjoy a real ale, and order from their award-winning menu. As it is (currently) early May and weather not particularly good, I booked the table for its country restaurant ambience and tasty food. We weren't disappointed.

The guest room (room 5) was cosy and comfortable with great views across the village green and towards the fells. The room was quiet, the beds were comfortable and the hospitality tray was generous. On arrival, although the radiator was switched on, the room was cold. However, reception were happy to provide us with an additional heater. Unfortunately, the shower was unreliable as the water ran cold in the morning making it unusable. The evening dining experience was excellent (good quality food and generous portions), as was the breakfast the following morning. The guest lounge is in need of a deep clean and redecoration - not sure why the fire logs are left on the carpet against the wall and are not put in a basket. It could be a lovely cozy area to sit before or after dinner with some TLC. Without exception the staff were friendly and efficient. Overall we had a great stay and would happily stay again.

Its literally like a scene from Deliverance. The atmosphere is appalling, its full of proper locals and say no more about that but you do wonder! When you walk in the music almost stops and the local inhabitants stop gossiping and turn their heads in unison to glare at you clearly shocked at how you dare enter their second home. The inhabitants even have their own seats AVOID

Went to the fish add chip shop 3 times this week as it was cheap but really nice food, the staff members are very polite and it was all made fresh and was quick with my order. Will definitely be many more visits here

Visited here today greeted by a lovely young lady from Leeds . Gave us choice of tables either in bar area or dining room, we chose the latter as was beautifully set out with fresh flowers on table . We ordered the whitby seafood ( hubby and I shared ) was super and fresh. Then hubby had the beetroot and goats cheese on sourdough , I had the beef bap with chips (we shared our plates … so this is both our reviews !) have to say all came out lovely and hot (just how I liked it) and we both agreed that everything was tasty and hot and service was fast .TBH it was not busy at time of our visit so Carnt comment upon busy times . But will deffo go again .
