The food was good. Service very slow.

A delightful old style pub with a warming open fire in the immediate bar area. The staff are very friendly and helpful and appreciate a furry pup or two. The menu has a very good range including vegetarian options, with thoughtful dishes for both meat/fish and vegetarian ideas with generous portions. The decor is in keeping with the building and the seating is comfortable. This is a great place to come for a pint or two or a fine meal.

Great food, landlady is really nice, friendly. Log fire was roaring. Well worth a visit.

Just returned from a beautiful Sunday lunch for my twin sister and I. The lamb shank was melt in the mouth. The pub itself had a great atmosphere that you don't get in many places anymore. Finally, I can't praise the two ladies who looked after us enough. Thank you for a wonderful birthday treat.

Went last Tuesday and had an amazing experience. Friendly staff, yummy food that was served quick, everything fresh. One of the few places that actually deserves your money. Have been here few times and definitely will be back.

A fantastic meal and service for our Wedding Anniversary on Saturday 5th October. After booking via email, Michelle was very helpful and as we were a party of 14 adults and 2 children asked if we could let them know our meal requirements the day before. On arrival we were warmly welcomed and drinks ordered. The staff were always attentive to our needs and the food was absolutely stunning.....'Thanks Chef'. Nothing was too much trouble and we will definitely sample the Autumn menu in the near future. Thank you 👌

We called in here on a bit of an off chance when passing by and what a pleasant surprise it was. It is dog friendly, the Sunday roasts were all lovely. We had the lamb shank, roast beef and kids chicken and bacon with sides of cauliflower cheese and creamy mash. All were really nice and there was plenty of meat on each meal. They also have a nice garden for the rare sunny days. I've lived in Cardiff for 15 years and somehow missed this pub until now but we will certainly be back.

It’s hard to find a pub that has retained its character without feeling the need to flaunt it, but the Red Lion is a great example of one. Unchanged in the decades I have known it, the pub still restrains its natural old Welsh pub credentials and it was a pleasant experience to find that the Sunday lunches are as good as they get. Wether you are a local wanting to escape the aluminium and glass of a ‘deconstructed meal’ or a tourist wanting to experience a real old pub this is a shining example

Out with a friend on a rainy Thursday, welcomed into The Red Lion and allocated a table for 2 ( hadn't booked ) . Ordered 1 Gammon and 1 Scampi dinner , although tempted by the Steak and Ale pie having seen 2 being delivered to another's table.Food excellent ,visually appealing and very tasty .Service very attentive. Good value for money . Would highly recommend this lovely venue.

Been there twice and it was closed despite the Web site stating it was open. Please sort out your website its rubbish

Stopped by on the way. We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of food and kind staff who had just opened the place for lunch for the day. Tagliatelle and Curry... yum! Gave back empty plates. Would go again.

Food is always 5***** for me. Really enjoy the Greek grill. If you have a big appetite it’s great and the Greek salad & chips are amazing! If you can’t eat it all- you can take it home! Sometimes staff can be a bit stretched, but always pleasant & friendly. Visited twice in two weeks- so can recommend n

We Visited the Red L.ion for lunch Sunday just gone don't usually leave reviews but this is a must My partner had lamb shank an I had beef dinner we always ask for extra roast potatoes as my other half don't like veg it was no problem it was all delicious the gravy was homemade & yummy! ( Gravy makes a dinner nice gravy lovely dinner!) will definitely be returning for a Sunday roast in the near future ☺️

Called in on a Sunday and, like many pubs, only does Sunday Roasts. Don't mind, but surely, a few cold sandwiches thw night before would not cause problems. It is a lovely pub in a great location, beer was lovely and a great outdoor area.

I have reviewed the Red Lion before but felt as it’s under new management I would give it a fresh shout out. We took our three teenagers for a roast today and it was absolutely amazing, the staff are so welcoming, food was superb. Keep up the good work guys as you certainly have made customers out of us.

Amazing food, friendly and attentive staff so welcoming

We stopped for a quick lunch today and the food was absolutely epic!! My wife had the lamb scotch egg and I had the gammon, egg & chips. I've eaten in lots of pubs over the years but this pub grub was on another level!! The services great, the lady who served us was always smiling and very accommodating. I couldn't recommend The Red Lion highly enough!! Thank you, we will return to try the mixed grill soon 😋

Lovely friendly country pub; we're visiting Wales for the zip line in Aberdare and staying just up the road, and this place was recommended to us in a guestbook left in the kitchen for us. Really not disappointed - super fast service, really friendly and welcoming (not just the staff, but the atmosphere generally is really lovely). We're returning for a second night and couldn't be more pleased we have it within walking distance, such a great little spot. Highly recommended!

Best pub lunch I've had in a long time! Exceptionally friendly service from the three ladies there. Popped in for a quick lunch last Saturday and pleasantly surprised by the quality of food and service. Highly recommend the fish and chips as lots of great chips, minty mushy peas and tartare sauce and a large fish which was wrapped in a very nicely done batter. 10/10!

Called in for some food as we were passing by. The welcome was brilliant, and some treats were given to the dogs while we waited for our food. The food was really nice, we ordered mixed grill and a sirloin steak, it’s was cooked perfectly. Even the chips were nice, one of the best meals we’ve had. The atmosphere was welcoming and laid back, and the whole place looked clean. If we’re in the area again we will definitely call back in.

We went to The Red Lion for Sunday Roast and it was the best Sunday roast I’ve had out in a long time! The food was incredible, the portions were great value for money especially the child’s roast & the staff were absolutely amazing especially with our little girl who was getting a bit irritable. I’d highly recommend people to come here, everything was so spot on that we’re even considering coming again this weekend! Starters: King Prawns in a spicy feta and tomatoe sauce Moroccan Meatballs Mains: 1 x child’s cooked dinner 2 x beef roast dinner Dessert: Child’s chocolate brownie and ice cream Attached a few pics that I did take.

How to say you hate vegans without saying it. Went here with my partner who's a meat eater. His meal was good. The vegan option which was Thai green curry was awful and I can't believe they charged 15 pounds for it. Full of mainly large slices of potato! It had some jarred, red peppers in it and a few pieces of really mushy baby corn (probably also jarred or tinned) and that was it! The sauce was practically missing and also not freshly made. Truly upsetting as I'd been here 2 or 3 years ago and had a really lovely chickpea and spinach curry, and the chips were the best pub chips I'd had (also different now). Attempted to talk to the waitress about it and no apology or anything she just walked off as I was talking to her about it! Yes they were busy but you don't walk away when someone is in the middle of telling you they were not happy with their meal. £15!!! Won't be going back here after that.

We stopped here after a rainy Saturday walk. The pub was lovely and warm, a good local pub feel, and they fitted us in at zero notice despite the pub being busy. Top class service, friendly staff, and the food was great. Dog-friendly too.

Always a warm welcome and exceptional food - the fish and chips is always excellent quality, fresh and rich - but the curry, burgers and pies are always excellent. Highly recommended for a classic pub lunch.

The worse Christmas meal I have ever had, just a ball of stuffing with the thinnest slice of turkey around it and bacon, couldn't even see the turkey it was so fine and the potatoes and parsnips were not roasted, how they can call this a Christmas meal I do not know disgusting with 2 small carrots

Amazing food, beautiful country pub, old building, real fires, lots of interesting elements to the decor, lovely staff and attentive service - sometimes a bit slow on a Sunday, simply because they are so busy. They work their socks off and do whatever they can to accommodate people’s needs. Sunday roast is fantastic!

Olde-worlde pub with lovely service and great food. We've been a couple of times and it's always lovely to see Pete. There's service with a smile and he always makes us laugh. The food is lovely: good portions, full of flavour. The pub has a lovely homely feel to it, especially if the fire is on!

Really nice food and very good service but the place was a bit dirty and in need of redecoration. The small dining room felt very claustrophobic. It is more of a pub with food than a restaurant

Fabulous cozy dog friendly pub with gorgeous food and lovely staff. Very warm welcome from Molly and Risha who looked after us brilliantly. We had some small plates which had beautifully balanced equisite flavours and a naughty but wonderful sticky toffee pudding. We popped in as we were passing not knowing anything about the place, but are so glad we did as it exceeded all our expectations - definately our new favourite place. Thank you guys xxxx ❤️

Really loved the atmosphere and friendliness, it was very busy, with only 3 staff serving, but waits were not unduly long, and the mushroom and Halloumi burgers were devoured enthusiastically. The roast dinner was very generous.

We visited today as it was my Dads Birthday and my parents have never been here before. Lovely waitress who was very welcoming and friendly. The food is lovely and fresh and the portion size was very generous which is always great when hungry. Definitely worth a visit if you are around the Vale.

Booked for Sunday lunch with my family. Unfortunately when we arrived we were left waiting to be seated while the 3 members of staff were trying to accommodate a family of 12 that had not booked. When finally seated, we had to ask several times for a menu. We were told very abruptly by the man who seemed to be in charge to calm down as he was printing the menus now. The same man returned with the menus and said he sincerely apologised. Unfortunately it came across as very sarcastic. We decided to leave without eating as did another family who had booked yet had a very similar experience to us. It’s a shame the service was so bad, as I’ve been told the food is great.

This is a pub where you can get really great food. The owner is super friendly and you just feel really comfortable there. I can absolutely recommend it 🤩👍👍👍👍👍

Having had to wait for establishment to reopen due to oven and boiler problems I looked forward to my vist. Arrived at booked time and told where we was sitting, the waitress came with menu only then and only then we was told it was a reduced menu due to no oven.Having looked what was on offer we left very disappointed. Why not be honest and tell people this when booking .

Been to this pub a few times, and it is always busy with a really lively atmosphere and buzz about the place. The food has looked good every time, and so we had planned for a while to try it. Went for Sunday lunch today and it was fantastic. The food was excellent, the service was friendly and efficient, and the prices really reasonable. Lovely wine at under £20 a bottle and a good choice of beers too. Definitely recommend The Red Lion - and I believe they have an excellent quiz night!
