We were visiting Sedbergh for the weekend and quickly settled on the Red Lion as our choice place for a few pints. The beer is very good and the staff were friendly and welcoming It was busy with other drinkers and it had a great atmosphere and feel about the place, which we got as soon as we walked in. We didn't eat here, so I can't comment on the food, but all the tables were fully booked for both evenings, which speaks for itself, really.

This is definitely the right place for excellent value pub grub. A friend had the mushroom rarebit for starters and that looked amazing. The mains were around £14-15 and we enjoyed beef shin, a meat pie packed full of meat and I had fish and chips and mushy peas. My only criticism was the tartare sauce was definitely not home made. Lovely friendly staff and convivial atmosphere as well - glad we went here rather than the “fancy pants” ( as described when we were asking a local foe food recommendations) option up the road costing 2-3 times as much.

Lovely place we had two meals in here and both were amazing. Especially the Sunday dinner, best we’ve tasted eating out in a very long time. Staff were friendly and helpful. If you want a table I would book, we went on a sat night and no tables available ☹️ Ended up just round the corner for fish and chips 👍 😀 Simply can’t fault The Red Lion, lovely place.

Stayed at the B&B and also had an evening meal there. A warm atmosphere with good food. Bedroom very large but not en suite, though we were the only only users of the bathroom which was also quite large. The small amount of shower gel available made me think that rationing was still on. Adequate tea and coffee making facilities. Slept well and it was very quiet Breakfast really good quality and made to order.

We were staying in Sedbergh for my 50th Birthday, booked at table at this pub for 7.30pm, we arrived at pub for 7.20pm, went to the bar to say we had a table booked, she replied, it was booked for 7 and I've given your table away, we stop serving food at 7.30, she threw the menus on the bar and said if you want food there is no steak or fish.....we decided to leave.......had nothing to eat until the following morning as there was no where else open or serving food......Great experience 🙊

Our experience of this wonderful old traditional pub was marred by foul language and smoking in an outside covered drinking and eating area . Other customers also had to endure this behaviour with it being brought to the attention of management. Arrived fairly late but the lad behind the bar who was very friendly asked the chef if he would prepare a meal which he did, went for the fish and chips which I have to say was very average, not a particularly big piece of cod and was quite thin but I have to say was quite tasty, chips were awful, perhaps arriving quite late in the afternoon contributed to this.

Hannah (Defo needs singing lessons) and the team were so pleased to see us. The Steak pie is amazing (had it most nights) We enjoyed a good restful week visiting nearby towns as there is not much to do in Sedbergh itself. Hawes worth a visit ! We visited the pub originally in September this year and decided to come back and stay as we found out they now had some rooms. The size was great and decor of the room was lovely, however there were a few issues that need sorting. We found that there was a door in the room which had no lock on it on our side. When opened it was another room which looked like its ready to refurbed. The worrying thing was that the key was still in the main door, on the outside in the communal area which meant anyone could go into that room and into ours. I locked and removed the key overnight for peace of mind. The bathroom has a sensor light which turned out that any time anyone walks on the floor above, the light went on.Heating did not work in the room so it was bit chilly at night. We ate in the pub Saturday evening and the food was amazing. Staff was really friendly and the food was outstanding. I had the game cumberland sausage with mash and peas. Highly recommended.Breakfast was served in the pubs sister, The Dalesman, which was across the road, about a minutes walk.On returning to the room prior to check out, we arrived to find a "disco" going on in the kitchen which was on our floor and the open door was opposite our room. The music was blaring and the person inside was singing badly. We did find this amusing as we were checking out, however if we had wanted a lie in or staying longer then I would have been absolutely fuming! All in all, a fab place to eat and drink but as for the rooms, they are not ready to accept guests yet as there is quite a bit of work to be done and unfortunately the rooms and accomodation experience weren't worth the £90 price tag at the moment.

I guess we should have been warned by the absence of anyone else in the pub on a Sunday afternoon when we visited. While it was a fairly quiet day in town, there were plenty of people eating in the other cafes and restaurants nearby. The pub has a bit of character indoors and is not a chain. The toilets, while old, are clean and quite spacious. But the food is definitely to be avoided, if our meal was anything to go by. We wanted a Sunday roast which was priced at £10.95. Not particularly cheap, but if you get a great meal then it would be good value. Very disappointing - we couldn’t cut through the tough, dried out slices of beef which had absolutely no flavour. The meal came with two roast potatoes and mash, which were better than the meat but nothing special, and a reasonable portion of vegetables - carrots and cabbage, and some frozen peas which had seen better days. The Yorkshire pudding was also okay, but some “just okay” items on a plate with inedible meat doesn’t make for a good roast dinner. Given that the last pub roasts we had were priced at 2 for £10 and were much, much better, we would have to score these meals at 2 out of 10.

This is a lovely small characterful pub in a lovely historic village. Sedbergh school itself dates back to 1525.Regrettably there is no access to the sun even via the small beer garden to the rear - though I readily accept this is not the pub's fault. They provide a reasonable choice of beers for an average price.I would have happily marked this pub 4/5 but I have an inherent dislike of bar staff using the toilets and then leaving without washing their hands. Presumably returning to the bar to fulfill their part in the food provision chain - young lads - but for me an absolutely essential requirement that was too readily overlooked !!A great shame - we decided not to eat here.

Dave and Thea, really give you a warm welcome. There is a good and varied menu as well as a wide variety of real ales and wines. All this with a real roaring fire and even treats for the dog, give this Dales pub a real ambience. Would definitely recommend a visit. Top marks all round

Hoping for live music as advertised but didn't happen. Pleasant enough and a local boozer but left after one drink to resume at the Dalesam Inn. Bar staff at the Red Lion were clueless.

As we found ourselves alone on Christmas Day for the first time in many years, we decided to make a late booking for Christmas dinner at the Red Lion, which is our local and just round the corner from where we live.At 40 pounds per head, the meal sounded to be exceptional value, and to be honest we were prepared to be slightly disappointed. However, how wrong were we ! We arrived to a warm welcome at 1pm, and left at around 4.30pm feeling very full ! We enjoyed a wonderful 5 course meal chosen from an imaginative and varied menu, and could not have asked for anything better !From the onset we were treated with great courtesy and friendship by Dave, Thea and their staff. We each enjoyed a pre-dinner drink, then ordered a good bottle of red wine to accompany our meal. Following very filling canapes, our starters were Chicken liver pate and Prawn cocktail, both scrumptious. Our main courses (traditional Turkey dinner and Wild mushroom nut roast) were huge ! We were fortunately allowed plenty of time to complete each course, and ample time between courses to make room for the next one. For desserts we enjoyed Lemon posset and Vanilla pannacotta - we could not have managed the Xmas pudding or Sticky Toffee pudding ! After some time we were offered a delicious selection of petit fours, but as we could not face any more food by then, the staff kindly packed these into a container for us to take home. All in all, we could not have wished for a more delicious and appetizing Christmas Day meal. All credit to the managers and staff for providing us and many other diners with such a wonderfully enjoyable festive expetrience !

Visited the Red on a random day out. Walked in to a lovely welcome from one of the managers, Dave, so welcoming to everyone. Our dog even got some treats! The food, cooked by Daves partner and other manager Thea was beautiful. Home made mushroom loaf and panna cotta for dessert! Would definitely visit again!

The food was excellent, traditional good pub grub! I had the award winning steak and ale pie, and it had to be the best pie I've ever tasted! Would highly recommend :)

Called at Red Lion whilst cycling from CTC. We had been to the Dalesman on the High Street which was frequented by families of Sedbergh School pupils and where prices were fairly high. Our decision to eat at the Red Lion was a wise one. They serve the best pies I have eaten for ages . We had meat and potato and chicken and mushroom all made freshly each day by the chef Paul who also makes steak and ale and a veggie variety. Not only are they very large but come with heaps of chips and mushy peas. I asked for gravy and was supplied with a large boat of good gravy. The price....£9.95. Very good value for money indeed. The welcome and service by the managers Thea and Dave was also excellent. If you are visiting Sedbergh and want a good pint and hearty meal then do not fail to visit the Red Lion.

This is a local pub, with a traditional style. We just stopped for a quick drink as we were renting a cottage in the village. The service was fine, not overtly friendly but efficient., the ambiance not so good, we did feel it was a local pub for local people, so only stopped for the one drink.

Loved the pub prices at the door looked reasonable for the area as dome of the pubs were so much more expensive. Loved the place straight off traditional pub land lord and service was friendly no dog with us this time as motorcycle holiday. But fogs welcome doggy barsnacks given to the frequenting pooches. Many pubs pay a fortune to be revamped in the traditional style this place got there on its own merits over the years but please don't change it. Now for the most important bit the landlord keeps a very nice pint of beer. We stayed for dinner and was pleasently suppressed my partner had steak chips peas with onion rings mushrooms and tomato a bit dated but so are we my partner is fussy about her food but soon polished off her plate and very nice was the remark hi praise indeed.I'm a pie man so went for meat and potatoe chips peas and gravy. Loved to see the hand made shortcrust pastry topping a well stuffed pie very filling if I had a criticism the chips needed a little longer as they were on the al dente side.Service was friendly and as food cooked to order took as long as it needed but in no rush and was well worth the wait. Highly recommended for the traditional pub lovers.don't expect plush expect character.

Drove here as hotel had no bar and despite the pub closing they served us and made us feel very welcome. Fed our dog biscuits and sat with us in an amazing quirky garden telling us about their plans for the pub. Even gave us some pies to take back to the hotel. This would be our local if we lived here for sure.

Came here for quick family breakfast before heading into Windermere. Waited over 30 minutes for 2 meals to arrive. Breakfast wrap looked like it had been dropped and was minus the hash brown and the additional black pudding, no butter with the toast for large breakfast and then when asked only 1 portion delivered for 4 bits of toast!. Dirty cup brought for the coffee. It wasn’t busy when we arrived but we definitely won’t be coming back again.

Great service compliments the menu which always has a Sunday roast dinner on Sundays. You need to book in advance to ensure of a table at your chosen time as there is nothing worse than being turned away and having to wait for a table.

Very limited menu very expensive,no decent priced children’s meals,no variety on menu apart from change of pie ,very little vegetarian options, not a particularly well executed menu, unfortunately it’s impossible to get any food delivered to hotel as it’s in the middle of nowhere,I would never book this restaurant

We arrived in lovely sunshine but were disappointed to find that contrary to the impression given in the advertisement by Lakeland Retreats of sitting on your decking enjoying the sun there is no sun as the Lawns is surrounded by high trees making the interior constantly dark. You have to put the lights on for your breakfast and if you eat in later in the day then also. My partner decided to have a bath the first night but unfortunately contrary to the management company's assertion that there's a constant supply of hot water the hot water ran out and the water turned cold. This happened twice as it did to our neighbours in the adjoining Lakeland Retreats property. We normally have a cooked breakfast on a Sunday but we were appalled to find that the two frying pans supplied were pitted with rust and unusable. Finally as the season turned from summer to autumn the evenings got a little nippy. We tried to turn up the storage radiators but found that the controls are blocked by wooden brackets screwed over the radiators so you can't use them. A beautiful area but we won't be using Lakeland Retreats again if this is the standard they aspire to!
