Visited The Red Lion after recommendations and wasn't disappointed! From entering the hostelry and having a lovely warm and smiling welcome from Molly, we were promptly shown to our table. The restuarant was warm and cosy and spotlessly clean with all the waiting staff dressed smartly in a distinct uniform. Yes there was a little wait but the service and the food was amazing. We had the triple meats roast and couldn't fault the quality of the food, the portions nor how hot it was. We will certainly visit again as this is the best Sunday roast we've had in the Tamworth area since teturning 'home' to live in exactly 1 year .... simply the best ...

An interesting red brick Victorian boozer no doubt well patronised by the boatmen of the time. You enter with bar to the left dining to the right. A well patronised public bar is always the sign of a great boozer and this was busy. On the right menus are issues at the bar and the restaurant is a busy space with functional scrubbed wooden tables and mix and match chairs but welcoming and homely. The food is generous and well presented and the plates full! A generous plate of prawns was followed by an equally generous main course.

Met with a mate at the pub last night and we both had a steak meal which I can only describe as being superb. The meal was served really quickly, looked scrumptious and tasted every bit the same. What a great meal, both plates were delicious and the steaks cooked to perfection. Staff were brilliant and beers to match. Thank you. Will definitely be back.

We were travelling through the area in our campervan on a Thursday evening in September. We called in to Red Lion and asked the barman if we could park overnight and stay in our campervan, to which he said we could. After a nice walk down the canal we returned to Red Lion at 8pm and ordered food. The food was fantastic and we would highly recommend. One 'other' special thing about this pub is the friendly nature of the locals. We're not sure if every Thursday night is so busy and boisterous in Red Lion (Games Room) but last Thursday was a great atmosphere. The games room was busy with lots of locals and we loved it. Even more amazing was...There were a couple of guys sat near the dartboard who saw that we had menus in our hands. These guys offered to vacate their seats so we could sit down to eat! How nice is that? The Two male bar staff were also very helpful and polite too. We would not hesitate to return here again. If you like a lovely beer garden with nice canal views the Red Lion is for you. If you want a quiet dining experience with good food, then again, the Red Lion (Dining Room) is for you. If you prefer a busy, active, noisy atmosphere (like we do) then The Red Lion (Games room) is for you.

Today myself, my wife and my mother went out for lunch at The Red lion in Hopwas, Tamworth. I booked a table for us, when we arrived we were swiftly shown to our table ,which was nice , so no waiting. After looking at the menu we all decided to go for the Sunday roast. When our meals arrived they were piping hot which we were so pleased about. Nothing worse than cold/ lukewarm food. The meal was very good with a variety of vegetables and potatoes on our plate. The food and the service was excellent. I highly recommend the red lion and we will definitely be going back . Mark L.

After moving To Tamworth a few years back, we have eaten and drunk in many bars/pubs, but I must say that the Red Lion is one of our favourites. Eaten here many times, weekly or fortnightly. The food, drinks, staff, the surroundings inc the gardens on the canal in Hopwas, are fantastic. Staff, many of which are young, are always welcoming and polite. I personally think the Tribute ale is the best I’ve tasted. We love the place so much, we arranged to celebrate our 40th anniversary in May 23. Many of our family use the pub regularly with no complaints, so keep it up!!

A lovely pub/restaurant next to the canal at Hopwas. Both a bar and lounge available - the lounge leads to plenty of outside seating with a good view of the canal. The building was in a good state of repair. We ordered food. It was table service which was excellent. The food was excellent too. The only warning I would give is that the car park isn’t that big, and we had issues getting our car out of the car park. Not a great deal of room to manoeuvre, especially when busy. So if you have a car bigger than a mini, I would recommend parking elsewhere and walking up. Other than that, brilliant!

I was so disappointed in this pub, I really thought it would have been great due to the reviews. To start off my meal came out wrong, I asked for a chicken burger and I got 2 pieces of chicken on my plate instead, they did replace this within 5 minutes. Then my friends steak burger had plastic melted into the patty. This was awful, the patty had clearly been cooked in the plastic. We didn’t get 1 check back throughout the entirety of the meal and was not even offered a refund. My friend still had chips and salad remaining in the plate and said that she would like her chips and salad and just the burger replacing. She was given only a burger and no chips or salad. The second burger was oozing with jelly textured fat and the brioche bun was soggy. The staff weren’t very considerate at the fact that the burger had plastic on it.. acted as if it was our fault! Appalling. After drawing their attention to the awful food a second time, they did offer a refund. They couldn’t refund my card that I paid with and offered cash, I do not use cash and I’m unhappy with cash instead of card refund. The staff members on shift did not know how to refund my card and I had to settle for cash. To top it off the women’s toilet had dried excrement on the seat and smelt badly of urine. I am so disappointed and just glad that it wasn’t our 5 year olds burger! I paid for a service and a meal which I didn’t receive and I was made to feel like I had done something wrong. I was not rude at all and I remained patient and I was still greeted with poor customer service.

Girls Day Out, no husband's or kids or dogs allowed! Having visited a nail salon nearby and discussing potential venues for lunch, this pub was bought up by our nail tech, Kelly, so we agreed to try it. Staff were polite and efficient, we didn't feel rushed to order and were advised of the specials board which held a multitude of meals for all dietary requirements. Persuaded to have starters by one friend we opted for breaded mushrooms, mozzarella sticks and the butternut squash soup which were all delicious. Cottage pie, steak and ale pie and a chicken bacon salad was our choices for mains, followed up by coffees and one of our party deciding she NEEDED to try the recommendation of honeycomb sundae too! Reasonably priced for what is likely homemade food rather than frozen ping meals, and drinks all for under £80 was definitely a bargain, thank you to the staff and would definitely return.

We read the reviews and the banner reads "Best pub in Tamworth" so we decided to give it a try for a family birthday meal, to be honest we were disappointed, no clear direction if you order food at the bar or served at the table, the food was disappointing, we ordered two mixed grills and a burger, the chips were terrible, tasteless and undercooked, the sausage on the mixed grill was nasty and the chicken warm and dry, then the toilets were being renovated and there was nowhere for men to wash hands, which for a place serving food is not good, the bill came to just under £60 for three main courses and drinks, so not good, I can't understand why the good reviews, it was a let down

Spotted this canal side pub on the way to Lichfield. It was a nice day so decided to call in for a sandwich and sit by the water. Ordered the tuna mayonnaise sandwich served with spicy wedges. The filling was generous and the wedges hot and tasty. Unfortunately the bread was terrible. It was hard and as dry as a bone. The person preparing it must have realised how hard it was but chose to serve it. I would rather have had an alternative if the wholemeal baguette was an issue. I didn’t even give it to the ducks. Fresh bread and a salad garnish would have made a world of difference. Lovely spot for a drink on a sunny day.

Sorry to have to give a slightly negative review about here as we have been coming here for years, as a couple or with friends and family. It has a lovely setting especially in summer. Recently been renovated nicely, but a little cafe like. Think they have also lost some table space. Prices have gone up! The lunchtime baguette, whilst still good, no longer comes with a salad. This makes a baguette and wedges a similar price (£6+ ) to main course dishes you can get elsewhere in the local area. Now for the toilets!. Thought these would have been refurbished as well as they have been dreadful for a while. I became locked in when the cubicle door jammed and was trapped for a while until another customer came in and fetched help. Two staff members came with a drill and were able to dismantle the lock. They thought it was amusing and did not even apologise. Not nice to be locked in, good job it wasn't a young child or elderly person.

This has been refurbished since we last visited around a couple of months ago. Looks very nice and modern. We had the same meal as before and it was as good. Nice consistency. It doesn’t always happen in pubs. I would like to see a website for this pub. They are underselling themselves bearing in mind they are next door (although the other side of the canal) to the Tame Otter which is always heaving and the Fox Inn just over the bridge. On the couple of recent occasions we have visited it has been empty. You need to fill those tables guys. You have a refurbished place, plenty of good food choices, but it is lacking in ambience. People that might be passing by will Google places to eat and you will not be on the list. There is not even a menu to look at online. I am aware that this has been taken over recently, but if you don’t fill the spaces you won’t see £££s in the till. Get a website. Get those seats filled. I want you to succeed.

It was a Friday night but even so the tables were too close together making it very noisy. The dining area itself is decorated well, the menu had something for everyone and the service fast, but the quality of the food was lacking. It’s been a while since we have been to the Red Lion ..and we were always happy with previous visits ... but this time is was under new management .... we had arranged to meet friends who were on their canal barge travels so wanted something near to the canal We were not disappointed .... great atmosphere , a nice refurbishment had been done and the staff were friendly and welcoming.Food was very reasonable priced and great value for money, hot and cooked to perfectionThe men had mixed grills and they thoroughly enjoyed them , the scampi was delicious and my friend said her chicken meal was also very tasty The only slight issue was the smoke coming in from folk smoking outside the main door ... but we were sat near the lounge door so every time it opened the smell came throughBut it will not deter another visit soon .. we will just try to sit away from the door

Went here for a late lunch. They have a great menu with a wide selection of specials. The service was friendly and efficient. Portions are quite big. Highly recommend the sticky toffee pudding!

We had booked and our request to eat outside was no problem. The bar was busy with Ryder Cup watchers but we still obtained prompt service. Menus were immediately provided but the ladies were not happy with the grime on the table. This was pointed out and quickly rectified. The food was served very promptly and although everyone had a different starter and main course, this did not seem to present any problem to the kitchen.

So pleased this is our local....the last owner let it go downhill so to see this wonderful pub right back up there is just fantastic. Wonderful food, friendly attentive staff, the refurb looks amazing. Best breakfast in town 😁

Four of us had lunch and drinks here on a lovely afternoon, nice enough to enjoy the beer garden and surroundings. We all had something different, baked potato with chilli, chicken tikka, prawns and cod. The food was good, all empty plates and the staff were very friendly. We went back a few evenings later just for drinks and had a good night...

We arrived around 10.30 am on Sunday morning. There were a few people in the restaurant but not too busy.Me and my partner both had the full English which cost £6.95 with a drink of either tea or coffee and my son had a children’s breakfast for £3.50? Including squash or milk. My sister also had a full English but is very fussy so they substituted certain foods for others for her and my brother in law had the steak and eggs which was around £10? All meals came out nice and quick and were a very good size. The breakfasts were all delicious. My sister and her partner who eat breakfast out quite often said it was the best one that they had had and would definitely be visiting again. We also said we would visit again, really lovely breakfast.

Reviewed this place before, however it has changed hands .They are working hard updating the property and it looks really good Food is excellent no complaints there ,My only concern is ‘housekeeping’, went for breakfast and sat outside with the kids , was around 10.30am unfortunately the garden was still littered with debris from previous night Bit off putting Good still great though!!

We had a fairly big family night out here and found it to be very very average. The food was like a cafe rather than a pub that you would expect these days.

This could be a great place, but what a hole. Terrible food, bad service, stinks, dirty everywhere, covered in broken glass and fag ends. If you like a village pub with drunk morons chanting football songs around your kids, then you’ll fit right in. The clientele walk around the place with their chests puffed out waiting for the next argument. Disgraceful.

we decided to try the red lion as we used to go a lot, when the old owner sold up we carried on going but the meals were awful nothing like Johns standards. We went in this time a little apprehensive I had fishcakes which was very nice my husband had surf and turf which he said was ok, only thing he missed was salad as steaks always came with salad chips and peas no salad now, portions do seem smaller now, mine was big enough for me, but someone whos a big eater might want more. prices have gone up slightly but if foods good I don't mind.

My husband and myself have been going for absolutely to the Red Lion years for lunch and have always found the food to be good value for money. This is why we have returned again and again. We went to the pub for lunch a couple of weeks ago and could tell the pub had changed hands and there had clearly been a hike in the prices but the food that you get is the same. I had previously enjoyed the prawn salad which I had been about £6 but on this occasion it had gone up to £7.50. Ok, was not too upset about this as it was a nice salad with plenty of prawns. We went again for lunch yesterday and went to order the prawn salad again but found it had gone up to £9 this time. As a general, prices have risen on lunchtime items by about £1.50 to £2 which is about 20% increase. Although the food is the same as it has always been, which is good it is no longer the good value it used to be.

This is a lovely place to go for Sunday lunch. The food is always served hot and delicious and the staff are always friendly and attentive. The restaurant has a very homely atmosphere that makes you feel relaxed and comfortable! Especially on the area up the step. Would recommend to friends and family

We stayed at the marriot as a party of 6 and booked into the restaurant for our evening meal.Firstly let me just say that this review is not a critique of the few staff who struggled to make the evening work but of the restaurant management who left the restaurant so terribly understaffed. Upon arrival we where shown to our table in the centre of an incredibly brightly lit room..no table cloth..no place mats ..just cutlery ..then the harried waitress said that due to lack of staff it would be quicker if we ordered our own drinks from the bar and carried them through to the restaurant. The restaurant was chaotic and it felt at times like it could all erupt in chaos at any moment ( I can only imagine the madness of what was going on behind the scenes). The food arrived ..my £20 burger and fries was on a par with a wethetspoons effort..my sons £20 veggie burger was just slices of uncooked haloumi in a bun and my wife's fish was merely tepid..didn't have the heart to mention this to the waitress as it looked like that kind of comment would have resulted in aprons being thrown to the floor and staff going home....I felt sorry for a couple who looked like they where trying to have a romantic meal in a room that looked like it was offering emergency relief to the needy. We ate in the restaurant the next morning and that was a different story ..a lovely start to the day which was much needed after the overpriced wetherspoons the night before...
