One of our sons , his wife and two daughters, aged 8 and nearly 6 were over from Holland for half term week . We were joined by a daughter, her husband and their 3 year old daughter and baby son aged 1 making a party of eleven for lunch. There is a very full menu offering a full lunch menu, one for children and also specials for a lighter lunch with lovely sandwiches with chips or soup. As a family we took up all three options and had lovely lunch, with conscientious attention from the hotel staff in very pleasant surroundings!

We visited The Red Lion Cromer on a blustery day in late October with our energetic 3-year-old. The sign outside said "Families Welcome," so we thought it would be a great spot to grab lunch. Inside, the decor was lovely, with a mix of fine art, rustic touches, and an autumnal theme that created a cozy vibe. We arrived around 12:15 and were promptly seated, with menus handed to us. The menu is on the pricier side (£24 for two courses) and had limited options—just a few starters, mains, and desserts, with even fewer choices for vegans. While the food itself was excellent and portions were generous, we didn’t find the venue very accommodating for young families. Despite there being only one other table, there were no high chairs or booster seats available, and none were offered. Our meal felt rushed, and while our food arrived quickly, the service was minimal. A service charge was added to our bill, even though there was little interaction beyond the delivery of our meals. We also noticed there were no dessert options suitable for our toddler. Overall, I’d recommend The Red Lion for families with older children but, unfortunately, not for those with young kids.

We have had Magnificent weekend break at this traditional pub / hotel. The suite that we stayed in - room 7 - was wonderful with the most incredible sea views. Clean and superb bathroom - just a hugely comfortable room. The cooked breakfast in the morning was incredible and the selection of beers on offer in the pub is second to none in Cromer. Thoroughly recommend - especially a sea view room so you can sleep hearing the crash of the North Sea waves!

Really disappointed with the service. We waited over an hour for our dinner (we only had one course). Whilst we appreciate they may have been understaffed, the food wasn’t great. We ordered a fillet with chips (£36) and the chips were pretty poor. They did offer to rectify the chips but at the this stage we really couldn’t be bothered. They never should have been served up. The steak was mediocre, maybe a little tough although I did order medium so that probable didn’t help. The other meals with ok. We visit the restaurant 4-6 times a year but feel service is never great and I think the food standard has gone downhill recently when you consider the price. It’s a shame as the actual pub has a lovely bustling atmosphere with a good choice of drinks but we will stick to the bar area going forward

Even during the busiest of summer seasons (carnival week) the team are positive, professional and welcoming. The balance between top end food and service and the feel of a local pub is so difficult to strike, but Hayley and the team have nailed it. The crispy chilli beef wrap is a great addition to the menu, spicy and sweet. The wrap was flamed too, to give another layer of flavour.

Visited the Red Lion today, it wasn’t planned. Just passing and decided we would give it a try. WOW! I’m so glad we did. We knew we wanted a Sunday Roast and we weren’t disappointed. Roast Beet and Roast Chicken were selected from a lovely menu. But firstly the restaurant was beautiful, I really didn’t expect what I was greeted with. Very dog friendly too. But back to the food. Every bite of it was amazing. Super tasty, presentation and flavour was awesome. Couldn’t fault a thing. We even shared a pudding, opted for the Tonka bean and vanilla panna cotta with ginger loaf, rhubarb and pickled ginger. That too was amazing. Honestly, what a find. We will be back midweek. We phoned up last minute in search of Cromer crab in a nice place! Tom answered the phone and took the booking and was really helpful and we booked in for half hour after phoning. We arrived and were pleasantly surprised as from the outside we might have just walked past. Talk about not judging a book by its cover as it was an oasis of elegance inside. Thomas took our order (might have been the same who answered the phone) and was really pleasant and swift in serving all the customers who had come in at about 6pm. He never looked overwhelmed, treated each customer individually and was very efficient in communicating with the colleagues he was working with. Sadly there was only one crab salad left! Being in Cromer we thought they’d have had loads! The crab itself was much smaller than we expected however was very tasty as was the fish cakes we shared. However the whole experience was made by Thomas! Thank you for a very nice end to a long day of walking and sight seeing along the Norfolk coast.

We entered the Red Lion pub and the Dish of the Day was Cromer crab salad.. The cost was £16. I ordered a crab sandwich, which cost £9.50 - YES £9.50. We expected something special at these prices. My sandwich came with a small bowl of French fries, but no trimmings. Crab? It was tasteless and there were very few small flakes of crab in the sandwich but plenty of mayonnaise! My friend had a lot salad greens but, similarly, the small flakes of crab were tasteless and lost in the sea of mayonnaise. It ruined our day in Cromer.

Very filling and good quality produce with the bonus of a sea view whilst enjoying the food. Bedroom was immaculate and a very comfortable bed. Only downside was the lack of parking at the moment due to outside drinking area. Used the local car park which was £7 for 24 hrs. The hotel does supply information on free parking roads to use but we were unable to find a space. Would definitely stay again and next time for more nights.

Stayed here for 2 nights, last time we stayed here was just before the first lockdown, and we were so pleased to see how well Cromer has survived and how the Red Lion has got even better. We had room 6, don't let the word 'room' make you think of a room - it was a superb suite, with a gorgeous sitting room overlooking the sea. Loads of space and worked really well for us as I'm an really early bird, so it was nice to get up and 'potter' without waking the other half. Everything about it was the BEST! Really cosy, even if you sat by the open sitting room window to listen to the sea, and a great view of the staircase stained glass window from the bedroom. And I've not mentioned the food yet ........ I'm actually quite pleased to come home and cut back on the portion sizes! Just amazing and very tasty, I wish I could have eaten more (but I'm pleased I didn't). Veggie linguine with garlic bread was lovely, as was fish & chips on the second night . Husband had the latter 2 nights running but had to ask for a smaller fish. Would have loved to try the desserts which sounded amazing, but no chance of that happening. Breakfast too, well just wow! Tomorrow I'll be back to my toasted crumpet, but I loved the Eggs Royal (?) with the smoked salmon, but couldn't face a full breakfast today before the drive home, so *just* had coffee, juice, Danish, fruit salad and toast. We've had a few hotel breaks this year (catching up on 2020 bookings) but the Red Lion was by far the best, and the best value for money. Everything was spot on, the staff were lovely, the room was very clean and the food excellent. We'll be back. THANK YOU!

We visited on a Friday evening and were glad to take on of the few remaining tables as a lot of the restaurants in Cromer were fully booked. The restaurant layout is typical of a hotel restaurant which meant there was plenty of space between the tables. There was not a massive choice on the menu and the Cromer Crab was unavailable. We decided to pass on starters and realised we had made a good decision when the main courses arrived.I chose the smoked fish platter - very well presented and an array of tasty and well cooked fish. It included scampi, mackerel pate, fishcake, eel and prawns served with salad and an enormous bowl of chips. The prawns were small and peeled so were my least favourite. The pate and fishcake were excellent. My wife had a tasty and filling burger with extra cheese and bacon which was served with an onion ring inside it. Again there was a massive portion of chips. The chip portions were over facing and meant we had mo room for dessert even though we left quite a few of them.Service was very friendly.Total bill including a bottle of wine was £54.

This was an absolutely fantastic place to stay. Everyone was friendly and they took care of the little things. We arrived early - no problem checking in. We needed room service - absolutely. It was a wonderful stay from start to finish. The hotel itself is old - but we knew that going in. The rooms are really nicely decorated and ours were very clean. We had a small room and an average sized room. Both were perfect for our needs. Both had a sea view and an area dedicated to sea watching. The bathrooms were a good size. The only tiny downside to the experience was the ‘low flow’ shower heads. The food was excellent. We had a range of tastes for dinner and service was extremely prompt and friendly. The food was cooked and presented beautifully. Breakfast was amazing. A great selection of food with a number of courses. Again - really excellent quality and friendly staff. In both services, lots of options for those that need a gluten free menu. The car park has been converted into an outdoor drinking and snacking area under large tents (which we used and loved!). We used a local public car park which was a 5 min walk away. It wasn’t a problem at all. Not only would I highly recommend this hotel/pub/restaurant in Cromer - we’ll definitely be back.

It mainly went downhill for us when my girlfriends meal turned up, the meal was missing a extras she ordered which is fair enough we all make mistakes but I don't think anyone had actually tasted the dish as it didn't actually taste of anything other than fishy oil from the fryer. The only two options for vegetarians on the menu are also vegan (because why waste more than two options on people who don't eat meat!) which is always a sign that you're a bit of an afterthought. I ordered the tofu and jackfruit burger which I couldn't even eat, and meat aside I'm the least picky person. The tofu tasty greasy and fishy, the jackfruit was grey and like no jackfruit I've ever seen. I asked for an extra which didn't come and still got charged £14 for the privilege of eating a bread bun, slice of lettuce, slice of tomato and about 8 chips. Its a miss from me.

Absolutely fantastic from start to finish! Visited here while on holiday and a member of our party ordered the smoked seafood platter with no bacon. When it came it did have bacon on but another in the party ate it instead. She didn't recall having any smoked eel and mentioned this to the waitress. She came back and said it was definitely on the platter but that she would bring another portion so she could see. When the eel came the member of the party did recall having it and apologised profusely. The situation was all pretty funny in the end and we had a good joke about it. The response from the waitress was absolutely spot on, and to even bring another piece out was fantastic customer service. That same member of our party then ordered the cheese board as she only really wanted it for the walnuts and dried figs. When it came we noticed no figs and so called the waitress over again. She went to check with the kitchen and we were informed they had ran out of figs, which was disappointing but what can you do. The waitress then offered her a free drink for the inconvenience. Customer service was spot on all round and the food was absolutely gorgeous! The food was so delicious that we went back again 2 days later for another meal! Birthday weekend for my wife, culminating in a lunch at the Red Lion before heading back to London. It was, however, the most disappointing part of our weekend trip to Cromer, bill was £80 (2 adults and 2 toddlers, no alcoholic drinks ordered). Having sampled incredible fish and chips from the local chip shop the night before, I was given short options from a short menu and ordered the £17 burger - it was horrendous. I was treated to some sort of pulled chicken as part of the dish, it was absolutely disgusting and I was ill for two days after. I won't dissect everything but extremely poor food. My 3-year-old son was similarly ill. No air conditioning in the dining room, so was an uncomfortable experience on a warm day.Only redeeming features: They had a skylight in the room we were in (although swelteringly hot). If they allow dogs in what is an upmarket establishment, why can't other venues, it's very frustrating. Highly recommended

Lovely food: the cheeseboard was fantastic (enough for 2), and the fish platter was gorgeous. We booked to come back and had the seafood linguine. The head of house tan a tight and safe ship. The view was stunning. A highlight was the chalk board messages in the toilets! The drinks were well priced and the drinks menu was informative. We’ll be back!

Fortunate to get a table at the last minute and after the meal was even more pleased. I had the cromer crab salad which was delicious! A quick word about the beer too: had a pint of Wherry and a pint of Jumper (both local beers) they were excellent and served at the correct temperature.

The refurb the hotel has had is in keeping with its age and very well done.

We had previously spent time here sampling the ales but this time we were lucky enough to get a table for dinner. One end of the building is the entrance and the other the exit which is well thought out in this day and age. The lady who showed us to the table was very pleasant and the menu has a lot to offer. The two mains we ordered were delicious and we still had room to share a piece of their cheesecake. Brilliant

We booked the day before and we sere standing outside waiting for the pub to open, I was a little unsure. But I was pleasantly surprised. Our host and server was so friendly and a delight to talk to, their were excellent Covid precautions and a really pleasant atmosphere. We just had sandwiches, the crab sandwich was flawless and the fishmonger sandwich an unexpected, delicious bite. It is tucked away a little but I cannot recommend this highly enough.

Very good hotel to use as a base to explore Norfolk. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The rooms were very comfortable and clean for both human and canine guests. Breakfasts were very good and included a sausage for the dogs. We were out for lunch so did not try the lunch/sandwich menu. The evening meal was ok but unfortunately menu didn't change during the 4 nights we stayed.. Felt Covid safe with all staff and guests following guidelines effectively. Very enjoyable stay and would recommend the hotel to anyone who like to take their pets for a break.

We popped in here for a late lunch and were all pleasantly surprised. The service is lovely, we were greeted by very friendly wait staff and were seated by the log fire which made for a lovely ambience. We ordered fillet steaks and a sirloin steak sandwich. The fillets were cooked to perfection and came with such a massive amount of chips, onion rings and salad - they were well worth the price. The steak sandwich was a bargain and very well presented. Wine selection is good so we opted for a nice Malbec and finished off with some liquor coffees. Good food, nice ambience and friendly wait staff - what more do you want! Our puppy felt right at home too and several tables had dogs in attendance which was nice to see. We spent slightly less the day before on a mediocre lunch with much less booze and no fillet steak so would strongly recommend!

A lovely evening meal here during a brief trip to Cromer. Nice beer, well kept. We had the burgers which were lovely and came with lots of extras (onion rings, a fabulous red cabbage coleslaw etc). Delightful staff working tirelessly to keep everything spotlessly clean during these unprecedented times. A one-way system though to the restaurant, hand sanitiser etc. Tables were really well spaced for social distancing.

Went for a spot of lunch after paddling all the way from West Runton to Cromer. On arrival, you see a notice about their QR code and you use that to fill in your contact details.Seen straight away and taken to a table and provided menus. The place filled up quite quickly but the member of staff who greeted us worked 7 tables - all in order of arrival - and took our drinks orders. When she brought us the drinks (which she herself poured) she took our food order. Our food -we both ordered the crab sandwich - arrived no more than 10 minutes later. All the tables around us received their food and drinks orders in the same sort of timescale. Really great effort from the 2 staff members looking after us all - around 30 customers at this point.Food and drink were excellent, served by really nice staff, in clean surroundings and all in all very well organised.

Nice recently refurbished large restaurant, With a small but well balanced menu. We had fish and chips and fajitas with whitebait to start. We both enjoyed the food, well cooked and tasty. The fajitas were very nice, soft wraps with a lovely filling - which was very substantial but you wanted to finish them because they were very nice indeed!Staff were mostly pleasant but the meeter and greeter could show a little more warmth towards her customers. The waitress were very pleasant and chatty.Good Covid arrangements.

Reading reviews we thought we would have an enjoyable dinner to end our stay in Cromer. We sat down & were asked if we wanted a drink. Immediately after they arrived Anna turned up to the table asking what meals we would like to order - I had already decided what I wanted, but my partner hadn’t , so feeling that he was being rushed, ordered something that, given more time would NOT have chosen. Looking around the room, more than one other table thought they were being rushed. The food came quickly. I had chosen fajitas - usually presented on a platter for the diner to put together themselves. This came already made up which is something I have never experienced before in a restaurant. The food was certainly not restaurant quality. When we asked for the bill, it was slapped down on the table by the very brusque Anna... . We couldn’t wait to leave .... definitely not recommended.

went on a Monday when they were doing Eat Out to Help Out. First I just ordered chips, then immediately asked if I could up the order to fish and chips. There was a gap of about 5 seconds but I was told (quite rudely)it was too late. So we ended up with 1 chips and only 1 fish and chips. Then it really went downhill. The fish and chips consisted of 4 very small bite size prices of fish! I know it was half price but wasn't expecting it to be less than half a piece of fish! Probably the equivalent of 1 fish finger.

Four of us booked our golf break way back in January before things changed and we wondered how things would work when we arrived. No need to worry, the friendly and welcoming staff had everything well organised so everyone felt safe and distanced. The rear car park has been converted (for the time being I assume) to a large marquee covered area with lots of seating, suitably spaced. Grab a table and order at the counter - easy. The food we had was all very good indeed. The breakfasts were substantial enough to see us through the hours of golf without needing any lunch. We ate in the dining room twice in the evenings; we all had Haddock and and chips on the first night and it was great, a good fish portion, well cooked in beer batter and lovely fluffy/crisp fat chips. The second time we ate we all had the chicken curry, which was medium heat and really tasty, and just the right size to clear the plates! There is a wide range of beers, including well kept real ales which we enjoyed. The rooms are a decent size and neatly appointed with a comfortable large bed, with typical high ceilings for an older building. Although the building is about 50 metres from the sea, the rooms were not at all cold and we all slept with our windows open. All in all a really enjoyable experience, with a great friendly atmosphere created by all the staff. We all agreed we would stay there again if we were ever in the area.

Like the rest of the world I was desperate for a break and wanted to see the sea. The Red Lion from the moment we arrived ( thanks Hayley) made us welcome and at ease offering the perfect balance between Covid 19 aware and 'relax your are on holiday and we have got it covered'. And 'got it covered' is an understatement!. Where do I start? The outside bar set up in the car park is genius - have a drink - be safe, be dry and have a lovely time. The rooms (and we stayed in two because we decided to extend our stay after our original booking) are clean, comfortable and thoughtfully appointed. Modern bathrooms and bedroom decor that is just the right mix of traditional and contemporary. The building itself is glorious - Victorian and imposing but unlike many that still operate as hotels - this is extremely well maintained and is beautiful. On to food! An unexpected mix of the traditional sea side fayre (fish and chips etc) and some really cleverly composed and excellently delivered cuisine. Example - sea bass fillet with samphire fritters? Off the chain of the loveliness!!!!! Breakfast is also a massive winner! Being a massive pig - I went for the full English - every time but saw other residents enjoy the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs and yoghurt and fruit. All table service and all done with a smile and a willingness that leaves you totally incapable of NOT enjoying yourself! The views are extraordinary. The hotel is literally on the sea front with access to the beach. Mobility - I have limited mobility but there are handrails to the beach and also up the impressive stair cases in the hotel so as long as you can DO stairs and take your time - these are doable. STAFF - what a lovely bunch of people who in turn create a fantastic atmosphere for their guests. Please visit the Red Lion - it is wholesome, clean, friendly and super relaxing. Thanks Red Lion posse for giving myself and my husband the break we so very much needed. See you soon

This is so bad. We went for drinks, and were told we had to sit in the car park, outside, under canvass, on old chairs! The car park is just that; a car park that they are using without cars! We were not allowed into the building, not even for the loos! The loos are building site porta-loos, and are disgusting! We asked why we could not go inside, and were told it was social distancing issues, and yet they have the restaurant open, with guests inside, and also the hotel! This is total hypocrisy, and clearly they have segregated the drinkers, yet are still happy to take our money, and give us no facilities! Awful.... and we noticed other disgruntled drinkers, with their own bottles of wine and beer, at the front, by the sea! We asked them what they were doing and they said they bought their own drink from the shops, and won't pay to sit in a car park! We won't be back, when so many pubs are really trying and yet this one is clearly just not!
