Enjoyable meal in this lovely little pub, one thing marred our experience though, the landlord shouting at the barmaid in front of everyone in the bar, totally unprofessional and unnecessary, maybe he was having a bad day? Hope it’s not a regular occurrence, quite unpleasant to witness.

An enjoyable lunch - the food was good and all my colleagues enjoyed their choices. The experience was however negatively affected by the poor payment processes - the internet connection afforded to the staff was rather dodgy so contactless payments were patchy. Thankfully I'd got enough cash to pay so avoided continued embarrassment and delay in getting back to my colleagues. Hope that investment in a better router will mean that future customers don't have the same problems delaying their payments.

We had a delightful Sunday roast here - a table for 10 was never an ideal ask on Mothering Sunday but the staff were immediately accommodating and recommended pre-ordering to ensure we got our first choices! The portions were hot, large and tasty with an excellent selection of veg. The apple crumble for dessert was especially good and the garden area was a big hit with our kids. All the staff were friendly and chatty, with no raised eyebrows when the kids made noise. We had a lovely meal and will definitely be back!

We were interested to try this pub as it was very local to us. We enjoyed our food although the lunch time menu was very restricted as it appears that there is a bigger choice in the evening. Our shared starter was pate which seemed straight from the supermarket served with white toast..brown wholemeal would have been preferable. My fish with chips and peas was very acceptable as was the steak pie my husband chose. But the dessert of chocolate torte looked brought in. Unfortunately it was a very cold day and the fire in the far room did not heat the area where we were The service was good and the waitress friendly and chatty. The price of the food was very reasonable but there did not seem to be much evidence of local produce or home cooking sadly so we might wait till better weather and a bigger choice of food before we return if ever

Booked for Sunday lunch; just before Christmas. Have visited pub for a drink but not overly impressed. Friends recommended and booked. Freezing cold on the day we visited but the whole pub was warm and cosy. Sat on sofas by the fire. Served drinks quickly and sat down. As it happens the World Cup was on tv. We asked to stay in our seats for lunch. Lunch was served. All piping hot. Turkey dinner was excellent. Vegetables not over cooked and just as I like them. Other roasts good too. Staff very friendly and accommodating. Would recommend.

Visited the Red Lion for their burger menu. A real treat and lovely options. I had the wagyu burger and my husband had the moroccan lamb burger. They were well prepared with perfect sides (chips and salad). Well presented on wooden boards, with enough space to deconstruct (as it was so big!). Service was great, a good choice of wines by the glass, draft ales and lagers, flavoured gins etc. Well worth a visit - just for dinner or at the end of a lovely country walk, visit to the zoo, cycle ride etc - all in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

What a fantastic job Ed and Debbie have done throughout the pandemic. We were in the pub the night the government announced pubs had to close and we wondered when we would be able to have Ed’s cooking again or a nice pint or two of Tring beer and a appletise. Thankfully they quickly set up a delivery service and what a great menu and service they have provided. Best fish & chips around, they even got dairy free cream in so I could have a curry one Tuesday night now that’s customer service. After four months away we have just returned from our first visit and what a fantastic safe space they have created but there is still that local pub charm. They have kitted out the pub so well with screens, easy clean table tops, hand sanitiser, temperature checks and very clear areas that you can occupy. So glad we can once again go to the pub and know that Ed and Debbie have done everything they can to make the experience as safe as possible in these times.

I've never had such bad service. From the moment we walked in the barman was extremely unhelpful. We weren't made to feel welcome. The food we ordered came out wrong and when we flagged this, his response was ' well its gonna get cold so someone will have to claim it'. The food very poor in quality. He wasn't even prepared to change or rectify the order. Also when we went to order drinks from the bar, even though we were there first. The locals were seen to before us and we were completely blanked. Overall a really disappointing experience. Plus it wasn't cheap. I've been a chef for for nearly 30 years and if I served food like that or spike to customers in that fashion I would be sacked on the spot.

We went here to take part in the fortnightly quiz and booked a table so we could eat first. The staff were friendly which was the saving grace for the evening. After waiting some time to order, the very friendly staff member told us that the only thing not on the menu that evening was ham. We all chose what we would eat and then found out that there was no salad - everyone else had got there first, no soup because who wants soup at this time of year ( well we did actually) and if we were thinking of dessert, there was no vanilla ice cream and probably no custard. We were disappointed as three of us wanted salads. However, we did make a choice and crossed our fingers it would not run out before the order reached the kitchen. Wish we had not bothered as fish was greasy, overlooked and batter devoid of much fish. Although I have to say my burger was passable. 45 minutes after arrival we finally got our meal which we were still eating when the quiz started. We declined puddings as we were would have had to order before the kitchen closed. Nice wine though!

This pub was recommended to me by a colleague who was aware I was staying in Dunstable. To be on the safe side we phoned through to make a reservation, which proved unnecessary as the pub and restaurant area were both very quiet on the Saturday we visited. My wife and I had our 4yo grand daughter with us who wasn't feeling at her best.We arrived and were made very welcome by a lady I assume to be the landlady. Some items on the starters menu were not available, but with hindsight I wonder if it is because this establishment does much of its business through lunch rather than in the evenings.Anyway, we had two sausage & mash, (one adult sized, 1 child sized) and a rare sirloin steak. I enjoyed my steak, especially the rocket & mushroom with the steak and sauce; and the adult sausage & mash was praised for both the main elements. We were well looked after by the staff and made to feel welcome as guests throughout. The IPA I drank was well kept (as they say!).A good pleasant evening where a slightly off colour 4 yo was made equally as welcome as the older members of the party. Not sure if we will ever be returning this way, but if we were, we'd know a place where we could happily visit again

After a long walk we were keen to find a good pub for lunch and a couple of drinks. After reading the reviews this seemed like a great find, god, wrong could we be. The sign outside said food was served 12-9pm with lunch menu until 3pm. After ordering drinks we were told that they had stopped serving food (this was at 2.30pm) due to a large party coming in later. There was no attempts at an apology and if I'm honest the whole atmosphere was very 'local' and we didn't feel very welcome. We left half our drinks and moved on swiftly, what a disappointment.

Had a family gathering booked at home, but with the weather forecast looking dreadful, this friendly pub provided us with a buffet with less than 48 hours notice. Great food and excellent service.

Had a fabulous meal tonight. Fresh dressed crab for starters and a beautiful lemon chicken burger with sweet potato fried for mains. I have driven passed this pub so many times, I will definitely be stopping to eat at this lovely village pub.

We visit regularly for food and usually a few drinks. The atmosphere is always great with lively locals and staff that are attentive and always make you feel welcome. The menu is varied and caters for all tastes so you can always find a tasty dinner whatever you are in the mood for. They serve food till late (around 9pm on a week day I believe) and have lots of comfy seating with a separate dining room if you do not wish to eat in the bar area. All in all a great local pub, well done!

Having called in advance to check if they did food all day on a Saturday, we turned up at 3.10, hungry after a long walk.We were then told that all we could have after 3 were starters or light snacks, and chips. They refused to do sandwiches, then realising some of the starters weren't available, relented and said they would do cheese and pickle or tuna. The food we got was vile. Tuna sandwich had massive chunks of red onion; sweet potato fries were hard and oily; prawn cocktail was tasteless. Worst of all was goats cheese tart - had been heated under a grill, so top was scorched and the filo on the bottom was raw!Staff were unfriendly and unhelpful - they really weren't interested. A dreadful experience - we won't be back

Having visited the Red Lion on several Fish Fridays now I thought a review was in order.Yesterday we sampled the scallops, beautifully presented and cooked to perfection. Followed by Fish and Chips. Good sized piece of cod with beautiful golden batter, very nice.Having seen a review below regarding the scampi and crab, all I can say is that my husband regularly chooses and enjoys the scampi at The Red Lion and we have also sampled and enjoyed the crab.Overall a great local independent traditional pub.

Lovely social pub. Run by a young family A good selection of beers . Ample parking outside with a beer garden and patio options available.Admittedly I've never eaten then but having seen the food being served it looks very good.Overall a very tidy little pub and I'll happily recommend it .

Wonderful food and even though I pre ordered the meals I made a mistake and ordered one short, this did not phase Debbie the landlady, even though they were a man down in the kitchen, she took it all in her stride and produced another roast dinner with no problem whatsoever. Made to feel very welcome and the service was impeccable!! Nothing was too much trouble, even keeping different tabs running for the same group. The pub has been transformed recently, tastefully decorated inside and beautiful gardens and planters outside. You can see the present landlords take a great deal of pride in their pub, producing amazing food, wonderful service and a great atmosphere. The beers pretty good as well!! Highly recommended! So lovely to have a traditional country pub in such a lovely little village.

Went last night with friends. Has a lovely seafood platter to start and a perfectly cooked fillet steak for main. If I had one complaint (and why I didn't rate 5/5) it's that a few things on the menu weren't available and had to substitute others that made up the platter.Having said that a great meal, great service and great value for money. Thanks, we'll be back

We walked with a group of around 25 people, ending up in this pub for lunch. We had to pre order our food a week in advance from an unimaginative menu. When the food arrived it was pretty terrible. It wasn't cheap at £10 per main. But with the quality, we should have been paying nearer £6.I'm not sure which pub the previous reviewers visited, but we didn't have the choice of food at the prices described. There is nothing at all about this place to make me want to come back.

we were looking for a place for lunch and passed the Red Lion. We are so glad we stopped there. The welcome was warm and the staff friendly and helpful. The atmosphere was cosy with coal fires in the bar and restaurant. The food was slow in coming out, but it was worth waiting for - fresh and home cooked. There were games to borrow so you could easily while away an afternoon, very pleasantly - well fed and well watered.

We came across this little gem when out for a walk in Wendover. Although the outside seating allocation was full due to the lovely weather, we easily found a spot inside. We both ordered the large breakfast, which arrived promptly. For the price, you got a very good portion. The black pudding was very tasty, the hash browns were perfectly crispy, the bacon was meaty with a nice margin of fat for flavour; also, perfectly cooked eggs, well cooked sausages etc. The food was piping hot too. Our only criticism would be the use of semi-skimmed milk. Recent studies show that full-fat dairy products are protective against diabetes, obesity and heart disease. Large numbers of people and cafes are switching back to whole milk. I recommend you use whole milk too for health and flavour reasons, as it makes coffee etc. taste much creamier and you need less of it!

Couple plus adult son. Booked in here as a motorhome stopover. Table booked for the evening. Landlord was happy for us to park up with permission in the morning so we could spend the day with our son who’s moved in locally. Lovely olde worldy country pub. Clean, friendly, proper home cooking & prices. Play area for kids outside and covered seating also outside. Peaceful nights sleep on sloping grass. Defo recommend and defo return.

Set in beautiful grounds, Hartwell House is a unique hotel. Steeped in history we felt as if we had stepped into a Jane Austin novel. The house is beautifully restored and filled with antiquities. We loved being able to relax in its library after dinner. The spa is in a separate building and quite fabulous with a good sized pool with jacuzzi. The views from our 2nd floor bedroom were stunning and our room extremely spacious, even though it was not one of their premium rooms. We had afternoon tea and dinner and both were served with attention to detail and with elegant silver service. The food was beautifully presented and delicious. The service we experienced was friendly and professional. We felt very well looked after.
