Booked a table weeks ago for a special occasion on Saturday night. Travelled from Oxford for the pleasure only to find that the restaurant was closed for refurbishment. Spoke to the staff on site who had understood that all those that had reservations had been contacted, clearly not. 8.00pm on a Saturday night in Soho, what do you think were the chances of finding a decent alternative? Exactly. Very very disappointing an upsetting.

One of London’s most famous Indian restaurants. And rightly so too.One of the first of the “new wave” of Indian restaurants, I always had this on my “to do” list. And then it caught fire.Well, they rebuilt and refurbished and finally I got to go there. And I’m glad I did.Excellent menu, all the usual Indian favourites plus a few newer ones.Very well cooked and presented. Hot (spicy) dishes were nicely hot and milder dishes allowed you enjoy the spices without burning.Staff nicely attentive.Good wine list.Still remains right up there as one of the best.

I wanted a good Indian curry experience for a friend who was about to leave the country and hadn't been for an authentic curry meal. The Red Fort seemed to have decent reviews so we gave it a try. Between the five of us we ordered 5 main dishes off the 'premium' offer and while they were good I couldn't help we'd had a sales pitch done on us when we could have had very similar dishes off a different page of the menu. The food was very good and the portions of a decent size. I was a bit surprised when the bill came that we had been charged for the poppadoms but then I'm possibly more used to the Tooting curry houses which tend to do the poppadoms on the house (or at least built into the bill). The bill was around £30 per head, incl. a beer each, which I thought was a bit on the pricey side for what we got but couldn't really complain. The service was good, the food tasty and the beer cold.

Había estado aquí hace muchos años y que había sido maravilloso. Lección aprendida después de regresar. Nunca he dado una mala crítica. Mi plato principal (cordero/Dum Pukht arroz Basmati) 20 libras era incomible. Era enfermizo dulce de arroz del color con muy pocas piezas de cordero. La selección de panes de 6 libras también eran incomibles como sólida. No soy exagerar. Had dinner here with colleagues. The service was rather middling, and the waiter had to regularly defer to the manager any time we wanted another bottle of wine or to ask a wine-related question. The service, while attentive when food was arriving or being cleared, largely broke down when asking for any guidance on a particular dish - the answer for any query was likely to be 'oh yes, that is good' - a bit lacking in the descriptions I'd say. In any case, the interior is handsome and the food was quite good. As another reviewer said - good dinner but not extraordinary (which sometimes is just fine of course!).

The restaurant is chic and quiet, and the food is certainly terrific, but the service was off point. In fact, it wasn't just me, there was a table next to me that was having issues as well. Waiters forgot to put orders in, they would nod at a request and never come back. It was very strange. So the price point is a little much considering that you can get a great Indian meal for a fraction of the cost at any number of other establishments throughout London.

I have been here 5 times in the past 4 years, including Christmas 2017. The food used to be great and has slipped a bit to very good. The service has become truly bad. I took my best friend and his mother and her partner (all from Canada) here after building up their expectations. What a disappointment. The staff seemed confused about how to do their job. Huge long waits for the basics like getting water refilled and then they would only pour half a glass. The dinning room manager seemed to always be getting involved and so it was never clear who was actually looking after our table. Always an issue to flag someone for service.

Dishoom does it better even though so busy and. casual.

Goodbye, Red Fort

Have eaten here a few times but on this occasion found everything just so. As it is valentines day, I tend to expect the worst in terms of a restaurant being overbooked and the service being simultaneously lacking and overpriced. Not the case today. We were welcomed, our coats taken and seated immediately. The vegetarian set menu for two was nothing short of divine. The service was attentive yet not overbearing. Ultimately, I left feeling I had received quality food, service and value for money. Granted, it was a significant day of the year but I have to say, I'm slightly bemused by the negative responses that precede my own. This place has no delusions of grandeur and yet trumps many of the similar establishments in the area.

Early dinner at 6:30pm, very cold restaurant as we were seated next to the window.
Starters very disappointing - poorly executed.
Grilled lamp chops were excellent - ordered those with two starters. Excellent quality meat and very tasty seasoning - highlighted the poor effort on the appetisers even more.
Main courses - chicken curry and lamb bhuna - were just average. Nothing spectacular and certainly not worth the much higher prices in this restaurant. The naan bread was awful - cooked on too high a heat so it comes as a naan crisp than bread. Supposed to come with 4 portions, but ended up being served as two small naans. I ordered more, this time they came as 4 small naans - very inconsistent.

Having been a regular for 20 years, I think of this place as a refuge to seek solace from all the hustle bustle of Soho night life. The staff are always welcoming and the food is usually of the freshest and highest quality - sadly not last night, however; since changing management a few months ago the accountants seem to have got hold of the menu, reduced portion sizes and cancelled a few of the more exotic and tasteful spices from the weekly shopping list. Two small pieces of murgh malai for £9 was an offence not just to me, but to the poor fowl whose only purpose in life was to lay an egg and be curried in a Soho basement a few months later. I was almost minded to look under the table, in case the waiter had dropped the other half of this meagre starter on the floor.

We dined here after the theater on a Friday night. Arrived at 10:25 for 10:30 reservation. Restaurant was mostly empty. We had to seek waiter to take drink order. We wanted drinks before dinner so we delayed ordering until after drinks were served (we assumed 5 min). At 10:45 (no drinks) another waiter warned that kitchen would close in 15 minutes so we must order. I asked waiter if I misunderstood website saying restaurant open until 11:30. He confirmed the closing time of 11:30 but no orders after 11:00. Weird, but we ordered as required. Drinks arrived 5 min later. I inquired of the waiter as to my proposed order if he felt that the flavors contrasted well. He was a deer in the headlights barely answering my questions. I explained my question clearly and pleasantly. Instead he said things like "that is a curry". I knew that. He also told me that he did not like chicken so he could not help. Weird. The music was pleasant but slightly loud. There was a similarly loud bar music competing from the lower level. When I went to lower the lower level toilet I found a very messy bathroom and the source of the loud music. The lower level had an active bar scene. The noise in the bathroom was triple that in the restaurant except when the BAR door opened, again doubling the sound. I quickly went into the bar which was crowded and the music overwhelming. The appetizers were competent but not particularly good. Aloo Chana Chaat and Dakshini Kendall. The Stonebass Tikka (fish) was tasty and well cooked but badly deboned. The Nalli Roganjosh (lamb) was fatty and so mild as to be boring. Bread was one piece of garlic nan for 6 pounds ($8). Note that we are regulars at mid to high end Indian food for 30 years so we have many comparisons including 6 other top places during this trip. Service was inattentive and amateurish w little follow up. As we ate a few other diners at 2 different tables entered and ordered at about 11:10 and 11:20. Weird. Meanwhile we noticed a modest layer of dust on the shelf next to our table At the end of the meal one of the servers (Mr. no chicken) asked how we enjoyed the meal. I politely told him an abbreviated form of the above. He grinned at me vacantly and said "Thank you sir". Weird. Extremely disappointing for a mid level restaurant. For a Michelin star restaurant it was disgraceful. I strongly suggest that Michelin revisits this rating.

It is a rather nice Indian restaurant, which tries to put some "twists" to traditional Indian fare and charge for those a premium. These "twists" are hard to distinguish though, which makes the bill a rather disappointing feature of the dinner: one could have had exactly the same food and equally well-prepared for much lower prices. The "twists" are mostly of a presentational rather than cooking nature. Culinary, The Red Fort is not surprising: it is some solid quality Indian food well served in traditional (but not Indian) surroundings. One struggles to remember a particular dish that was surprising. There were no surprises during the dinner but a most pleasant evening with excellent food and good service. Not a cheap evening though.

The Red Fort is one of our favorite Indian restaurants in London. We first ate there perhaps 20 years ago and it has maintained it consistent quality on our subsequent visits. It is an elegant and spacious restaurant with very professional service. It is also pricey for an Indian restaurant. However, we were are staying at the nearby Nadler Hotel which offers a 25% discount if the restaurant is booked through the hotel. With that discount the Red Fort is no more expensive than other Indian restaurants in Soho. And while the ambience is lovely, the food is the thing. The menu includes a few Indian standards but most of the dishes are unusual and innovative. My wife found the mixed appetizers particularly pleasing and the spiced Scottish lamb chops out of this world. The Red Fort is an exceptional Indian restaurant you should certainly visit when in Soho –and worth a trip across the city for a special occasion.

Everybody knows it's good, but it's easy to take the option of a new restaurant when finding somewhere to book. Therefore, I was delighted to revisit it again last week when a friend, as well as business colleague, suggested we convene there with mutual acquaintances. I then realised it was my first visit for almost a decade. There was absolutely nothing to worry about. It retains the same charm, the great service and most importantly, the wonderful food. Although I had been here before and had a great experience, this last time was only so-so. I was very fortunate that they allowed me to sit at my table early and take a business call. But after my friends arrived, everything sort of went downhill.

First, I ordered a second bottle of wine. But they were out of it. I was going to order a bottle of another wine, but they were out of that as well.

They don't open the wine at the table and they don't leave the bottle on the table or in a cooler. I find this very odd since the customer than can't serve themselves, doesn't know if the wine they opened is freshly opened, and doesn't know if they are pouring from that bottle elsewhere.

When we got the samosas, they looked fantastic; but they were not warm inside. So we ate room temperature (at best) samosas. The saffron rice was not saffron flavored much. It was just rice, or so it tasted. The sides were fairly small servings. And unlike our other times there, the food was a bit too oily. We all commented when leaving that it was "okay." But our experiences there before was great. I'm hoping it's just an off night at an otherwise great place.

I was given the wine and a la carte menu, however I had to ask for the set menu which leaves a bit of a sour taste in the mouth. Not being offered what was advertised outside. I heard the table across the room also asking for the set menu. The a la carte menu was short this is not your typical Indian ( no poppadoms and pickle trays around here). However I opted for set menu once again quite short and compact with limited meat options (one fish, meat and vegetarian option) per course. I decided on the lamb skewers which were really delicious and the chicken dumplings. The food was really enjoyable and would definitely return it was really impressive food. This place is great if you want something different from your standard Indian cuisine. Well done to the chefs!

We asked the concierge at our hotel about an Indian restaurant and he asked if we wanted a place where it was always guaranteed to be good and this was his pick. The food was as good as it gets in terms of British Indian food, which in itself is very good Indian foods. The fixed price pre-theatre 3 course menu is good value and I highly recommend it. Indian doughnuts are very nice as is the minced lamb appetiser.

Dined at The Red Fort on Saturday. Food was good and location great for being in the heart of Soho. Have dined here before and would recommend.

This has been historically one of our favourite Indian restaurants in London. The food is consistently very good and the ambience nice. The only downside we found this time (our last dinner in London this visit) was the lack of enthusiasm from the host and staff. The service was good but lacked a friendly atmosphere. Still, the food was very good. Be careful not to order too much;)

Recommended by a friend of a friend in London as somewhere wonderful not noted in guidebooks and crowded with tourists but in a neighborhood that normally is... we were thrilled. Near the theatres and the fun hustle and bustle but when we walked in the noise was left beyond the door. We were treated well and fed well with a combination of the set menu and a some a la carte. Highly recommend :)

We had such an amazing meal. We told the server to bring us all selections of his choice. Every dish was absolutely incredible. The flavors complemented each dish. The service was spot on. Loved everything. Can't wait to return.

I found the dishes to be run of the mill with no specialty that would identify the food as from one of the top North Indian restaurants in London. The butter naans were Literally swimming in butter, the meat dishes tasted ordinary with no 'wow' factor at all . The prawn malai was good. I've tasted better biriyanis in much cheaper places. Daal was okay. Green saag was overcooked until it lost its color. The lamb shank looked better than it tasted. The mango Kulfi was good and worth trying though. Will go again to give the place second try as it was packed so maybe I just went on a bad day

First of all, I was truly overwhelmed of the decor and posh layout of the restaurant which definitely initiated a very professional and exemplary character of the place. I was greeted professionally and politely upon arrival after having made a reservation. Yes, it is very expensive but you definitely get what you pay for in terms of the exemplary quality and I would restrict visitations for special occasions, if it is out of your budget, as you do get very first class service and very delicious cuisine! I was extremely satisfied with my meal and the taste just melted in my mouth which was more than enough for me to make a repeat visit! The manager also gave me 20% discount off the bill which even made my visit an even happier one! Once again, thank you very much for making my evening a very memorable one! You've easily gained five stars! The very best Indian in London, ever!!

Outstanding Indian food really well presented and a good choice of interesting dishes, the baby crabs and scallops were delicious. Not very busy which is surprising as the food is so good and different from the usual dishes on Indian menus. Please note that the toilets are down a steep staircase so no good for those with mobility issues

Amazing food. Stunning service. This is not your typical menu and you won't be able to spot any of the key benchmark dishes for Indian food. We did lunch on a Tuesday but not very busy so low on ambiance. Try the baby crabs. All of us had never tasted anything like them. The scallops were exceptional as was the biriyani. The breads and dips are unlike any others you will find in other Indian and Asian restaurants. This is a place you need to add to your bucket list. Restrooms are downstairs so difficult if you have mobility restrictions

Having sampled Indian restos in London for many years (over 15, beyond that we betray our age, and we will have none of that, dear reader), you might asky why another Indian review ? There are so many serviceable ones, good ones, better ones, and a few seriously good ones. I have tried them all and there are indeed some very fine ones where the keys to Indian cooking are the following : subtlety not heaviness, which translates into delicate sauces not overwhelming ones, innovative cooking, not the bog standard, and a terrific eye to individual detail per course, and no standardization of spicing and sauces across dishes. How many do that ? Very very few. The Red Fort, which has been at the heart of Soho for over 30 years I hear, does all of this and more, I have now discovered. We'll get to the food in a second, but here's the more : this is a seriously comfortable place with large tables, spread out over a very considerable diniing room, rich white table clothes which soften the asmosphere and very fine subtle lighting, and an attentive staff which is excellent and attentive, That spells ambience and pure relaxation. And there was 0 time limits on the table and no rush to move us on. Which creates the atmosphere to enjoy the food. It can be summed up with 'Wow'. Our party of six started with two rounds of the tasting starters which were simply extraordinary : each dish of scallops, shrimp, spinach dumpling with cheese, a haloumi type cheese and a wide assortment of vegetarian options were all individually cooked and spiced separately as a separate dish. Even the salmon which otherwise can be trite was a melt in your mouth wonder. The main dishes which followed were actually simpler but also terrific - I had a bass in a delicate saffron sauche from what I can tell but it was light, balanced and subtlely spiced which is all you could ask for. Everyone in our party was delighted. Unlike most Indian restos, here you can walk out feeling you ate well and also feeling great, and not with the weighty baggage of more traditional Indian cooking following with you to digest over the next day. If I had any suggestions for improvements, on the food none, on the wine list they could up the game as there wasn't a great selection although we settled on a very serviceable Turkish red (well, beer goes best with Indian anyway). In all events, how could I have walked by this place countless times on Dean Street and failed to notice ? Shame on me and shame on you if you don't try it ! So get on with it, then !

Went with a large business party, including some picky eaters. Everyone found something they could get and all loved the food! It became our favorite meal in London! The we autres were knowledgeable and patient with many questions for the non-Indian food lovers in the groups. The service was quick enough but it did take too long for additional things to arrive like drinks, naan and rice. Will definitely back back with friends this November!

we were staying down the road at the nice hotel and we were given this place as a good curry ! nop rather eat a curry from Sainsbury's whe had 3 different curries but they all seamed to taste the same the chicken was not nice and the nan's are the same size as a 50p piece , and then half way through the meal i got a lap full of white wine obviously wanting to get home and not thinking about giving the four of us good service, its the first time i have ever asked to have the 12.5% service charge taken off the bill and it still cost us 160.00 if people continue to use restaurants like this they will keep serving poor grub

One of the rare treats is great indian cuisine in London. We were recommended here by our concierge, and the food was excellent. We had actually eaten at another place in Soho years ago, but could not recall what it was. I'm pleased we were made aware of this restaurant. I've read some reviews about the service but for us this was not an issue. If you like delicious indian food, then you cannot go wrong at The Red Fort. There is a night club downstairs which can be loud (restrooms are downstairs) but you do not notice it in the dining area what so ever. The drinks here (shared with the club) were excellent, something unique to many indian restaurants.

Recommended by a friend and we love eating Indian food in London, so we were excited to go. Unfortunately, the only positives were it was easy to get a table, the 2 and 3 course set menu is a good value, and the service was helpful and wonderful. The food however is just bland. No real spice or flavor to almost every dish we ordered. A shame because it's in a great area for theatre goers.

Expensive and a big disappointment. Left me feeling bloated and rather sick. Food was very heavy and strangely for Indian food short of vegetables.

So almost cancelled dinner as my husband got food poisoning and I hate dining alone unless I’m at a counter. I spoke with the manager, Preeta, and she convinced me to come and they’d take care of me. So I arrive and probably have the best table in the house where it’s central part of the action but not exposed. Food was amazing. Duck naan was a Lovely starter and I couldn’t decide between the lamb chops and salmon so Preeta gave me a sample of both. Can’t decide which I liked better. Somm from Sardegna was super knowledgeable and helped me pick a great bottle of white he had off list (just gotten in). I also wanted a glass of red and he served me my pick and brought me a taste of his pick, a South African wine, which was delicious and lighter than most South African wines I’ve had which is nice. We’ve loved their sister restaurant Gymkhana for years but this was a fun more casual vibe with equally great food. They could not have made me feel more welcome. ❤️

It was my first experience with Indian cuisine, and it exceeded all expectations. The staff were incredibly polite and attentive, taking the time to understand my preferences and recommending the best dishes to start with. The food was rich in flavor, with perfectly balanced spices that made each bite a delight. The restaurant’s atmosphere was warm and inviting, adding to the overall experience.

Unfortunately, a very disappointing experience. The food generally was very tasty, but I started to feel unwell midway through the main course, and threw up shortly after leaving the restaurant, whilst my partner was ill later. I understand this is possible, but the response from the restaurant felt like disbelief initially, and then nothing. After the health and safety assessment completed by a third-party, I heard nothing else, and never received anything like an apology. To spend over £100 per head and then to be treated without courtesy was poor. The waiting staff were excellent, but I felt very let-down by the service from the management, and unfortunately it coloured the way I would see other JKS restaurants, several of which I have enjoyed very much previously.

We had such a wonderful visit to Flavors of India during our stopover in London. The staff was very kind and accommodating, especially to our baby daughter on her first time trying Indian food! They even provided a high chair and were very attentive to us. We enjoyed the music, the drinks, the atmosphere, and of course the food!

Arrived on time to be asked to have seat in the lounge area whilst the table was prepared, Odd as there were plenty of tables ready and no one at them. The venue is cold so bring a jumper. We ordered our food. Waited for 45 mins before asking where the food was, table behind us ordered after us but got served before. It transpired that it was the manager and his friends having dinner there who were clearly more important than all the other guests, The staff were flustered and did not understand or request of having each dish brought to the table as it was ready so it did not sit on the pass drying out, this did not happen and the food all came together and was beyond edible. We spoke to the manager who did want to try and rectify the problems by replacing all the food but by this point it was just too late, the staff needed to be more on the ball, there were other staff there that were hiding in the corner behind the bar and just popped their heads out to see what we were discussing with the manager, I'm guessing they were worried it may have been about them as we had not seen either of them do any work since we arrived. We ended up paying for our drinks and left to go and eat elsewhere where we had great Indian meal. The manager would like us to go back but we have standards when it comes to food and service and this place just does not come close, so no thank you we will not return and I'm guessing by the very few customers that were there this place needs every cover it can get.
