It's the best pub in Gilesgate.

Good comfortable room, very pleasant staff, excellent value. Quite noisy in the early hours, and the music from the pub went very late.

Stayed there 1 night while we visited the cathedral and castle. Played pool with the locals and did the quiz later on. Good atmosphere and friendly staff. Mattress wasn’t cracking but the price for the stay was.

I booked here a room for two nights. For the very modest price the room was surprisingly nice and the bed excellent. The only drawback is the music from the bar whose basses can hammer until well after midnight and the walls are thin. But otherwise highly recommended, parking is included and a bus stop just around the corner.

Friendly staff, cheap rooms to stay but with one very outdated bathroom to share and dank bedrooms (uncomfy bed in Room 7) you only get what you pay for

Just checking in and they no longer do food but there’s plenty of takeaways within walking distance

The place is probably what you pay for. There is no food on site despite what is on all the Internet searches. On day one upon check in I raised a few issues with the receptionist, who is a lovely person and perhaps restricted in what she can do. I brought down cups that were left and stacked dirty, which she replaced. I then saw that the mattress was all stained. I am a reasonable person so I said if I had a mattress protector I would put it on myself. She didn't have one or any alternative accommodation but said she would put an extra sheet on it. She came up and saw and I flipped the mattress over and helped dress the bed. The walls are dirty and the carpet needs a deep clean. There is noone to ask or noone that I have seen so I hope it is hoovered when I am out. I will mention that the heating seems to be on a strange timer schedule, where it turns on during the day and switches off at night so it was really cold during the night. There is a sainsbury up the road and a bus stop so that was handy. I probably would not stay here again only because I am very particular however I will say the ensuite bathroom was very clean and updated. I would put a blind on main window as light came in too easily.

Tried to order food before 8pm and got told the kitchen was wrapping up, so couldn't take any more orders - fine and reasonable. Brought a takeaway in to eat, only as they weren't serving food anymore. Wasn't making a mess or using their cutlery, and others in the pub were also eating food they brought in (crisps, meal deals) so didn't see why it would be an issue. Never had issues with bringing takeaways into pubs before when they're not serving food, and Google literally says "outside food allowed" when you search this place! Got told I couldn't eat it, so put it away in my bag. Had a few chips from out of my bag (my bad, I know, but hardly a crime) and the bartender came up to me and very bluntly told me they saw me on the camera and that if they caught me eating again, they'd kick me out. I get it, but it wasn't polite at all and it wasn't explained to me why it was even an issue. Felt really disproportionate to what I was doing, and a rude way of approaching me when I would've happily understood and stopped without the threat or the attitude. The bartender scowled at me all night even though I'd stopped. What's happened to this country? Didn't order any more drinks after that. It's a shame there aren't more pubs about these days. Nice atmosphere though.

UNFORTUNATELY Cape to Cairo Shildon is closed now. Totally unexpected find in Shildon. Very interesting and different menu cooked by one of the owners who is from Sierra Leone and therefore had her own take on all the dishes on the menu. Both the chef and her husband are extremely friendly and made the visit even more memorable. We were fascinated to find that the first passenger railway in the world started outside the restaurant (which was a pub in those days) and passengers bought tickets actually in the room we were eating in. Well worth a visit and we'll be back soon

Booked a table for a late Sunday lunch. I had beef, there was plenty of it and it was delicious.

Unfortunately this pub has the potential to Be a relaxing chill area, but The clueless staff and rude owners unfortunately let it massively down. Employing younger staff maybe the pubs downside? It also might be that the brunch is limited to 5 drinks and a tiny meal that is microwaved? happy to be proved wrong on a different visit, but I’d prefer the boathouse for value for money, taste and service skills. Happy for management to show me otherwise however feel that very doubtful unfortunately. Disappointed is the best description for this pub.
