The Punch Bowl in City of London, Westminster

After a long day — our first ever in London — of sightseeing — we were hungry, tired and not into anything fancy– er, "posh" as our British cousins might say. Our hotel concierge (Jake @ The Chesterfield Mayfair) offered three suggestions and this seemed best — incl the shortest stroll. Was a delicious treat. Central London can be problematic for even casual dining and reservations are recommended for even the most modest places. Fortunately, despite just walking in around 5pm-ish on a Wednesday, just before the office crowd arrived, we were seated in a prime booth with the advisory it was reserved for 7 pm. Not another word was mentioned about that and we enjoyed a delicious, relaxed meal in 90+ minutes. Staff was informative and accommodating — and we Californians came away quite impressed by the quality of my wife's margarita. For a main meal, my wife cobbled together a few starters, Scallops Baked in the Shell, Garlic and Herb Butter and Heritage Tomatoes, Vegan Burrata, Pangritata. I did the Ox Cheek and Bone Marrow, which was AWESOME. Delicious sides, too. I took a flyer on a pint of bitters, my first-ever. Delicious beer! One last point: Is known as movie director Guy Ritchie's pub but he sold it in early 2013. No matter, is in good hands.

Ordered a pint and a bottle of sparkling water at the bar and the bar staff asked where we wanted to sit and they would bring our drinks to the table, these arrived quickly and by our server who was very polite. I requested a menu, it was around 1430, our server told us it was bar snacks only. A little disappointed as I wanted to try the pies! I asked our server if there was any possibility of the full menu, after a few minutes she returned and informed me she had asked the chef and handed us the full menu's! We ordered a ox cheek and marrowbone pie! It was absolutely fantastic and easily enough to share for 2 with a side. All in 2 pints of really excellent Butcombe bitter, a 750ml of sparkling Hildon spring water, 2 complimentary bags of steak and ale crisps all for £58! Really impressed and our server an Indian girl was exceptional. Highly recommended.

The restaurant upstairs is lovely. Make sure to request that when booking otherwise you might be seated in the bar which was lively and loud. The servers (Antony and Priyanka) were so pleasant and eager to help. You have to try the chicken pie.

Warm and friendly atmosphere… Really good food (I personally tried the Barnsley chops) and drinks Annabelle and Edith have been really nice, smart and professionals. Definitely recommended! We’ll come back soon.

Excellent breakfast spot - the second floor dining room was a lovely setting and we were served by a charming waitress, Annabelle. Very good value for money, eggs + avocado, porridge, 4x coffees for less than £50 in Mayfair

Just reopened. Really well refurbished and the restaurant upstairs is great. Very nice breakfast. Annabelle treated us very well. Coffee excellent and so was the porridge.

Went to restaurant for dinner. Had the samosas & Fish and chips, both excellent. Watch out the Main entrees are huge. Service was excellent, food was great. Jai was great. The crowd was steady the whole time. I would come back again.

Food was amazing. Scallops are the best!! The atmosphere is perfect, laid back. Staff was very attentive and friendly. You have to go!!

Went along as part of the relaunch and had a lovely 3 courses. The crab and king prawn cocktail was amazing, followed by the flat iron chicken. This was a bit greasy but ok and we had chips and garlic mushrooms as sides. I finished off with the After Eight chocolate dessert which was lovely and light and had a good kick of mint to it. We were served by Annabelle, Max and Marisa who were very pleasant and helpful, and gave us great service. The interior is lovely and quirky and the atmosphere was buzzy and exciting. All in all a great visit. Thanks everyone.

Love this pub! Great atmosphere - Love that they have live music there on a Thursday. Best Espresso Martinis in town! The staff are amazing and super friendly and attentive. It was great to meet the General Manager, Kyra. I definitely recommend this one and cannot wait to go back after their renovations.

Poor service, didn't know how to pour a Guinness properly. Quick pour, not allowed to settle so there was no dome, dirty glass so not a clear pint. Expensive without the quality. Lacking atmosphere. Dirty toilet with only one sink working. Was probably a nice pub once. Won't come back.

I have been going to the Punchbowl for many years but my recent visit was a big disappointment. I went for lunch taking some friends for a special celebration. The inside of the pub still has the old world charm and I would still consider having a drink in the future however; the lunch food was very poor. I ordered fish & chips and it was difficult to find any fish due to the thick breading. It was piled high like a whale onto some chips that were not crisp or warm. The staff were not overly attentive or friendly. We asked for sauces for the chips and they brought out a tiny little dish. I imagine there must be a new management as The Punchbowl does not live up to its usual old style quality.

We had a private dinner yesterday evening in the Judy’s room and I can't thank more Sufi and Sonia again for their amazing service and kindness yesterday evening. They were really on top of everything and the food was super nice. Thank you so much again for your hard work, we will be back. Julie

Fantastic service with amazing wine selection. Went there with my partner and they really made me feel welcome. The team looked after us really well. I definitely recommend it.

Popped in for a drink randomly...had a fab margarita thank you. Did not eat but the table across from us did and the fish portion looked massive. Also noticed two cocktails for £17 during happy hour 4-7 which in Mayfair I think is good value. Still had the charm of an old pub. Would return if in the area again.

Awful experience. A venue living off of past glories with miserable staff and service. No customer service or at least any appreciation of the concept. Over priced food. Staff. who don't know what they're doing and management who think they should be working at the Ritz...

Great spot in Mayfair with friendly staff. Good offering is classic pub with some great specials and cocktails! There is a fantastic upstairs restaurant for more formal setting.

We had not booked in advance but a table was available. I had a wonderful Bloody Mary, we shared a pate starter which was divine. My husband had a beef pie which he said was lovely. I had roast beef which was one of the best roast dinners I have had. Thank you !

My experience with the punch was terrible waited to be serve almost half hour .they serve white people first when I question the staff why no one serve me because my race I'm Chinese they look down on me and my friend because he was black .racist place never going to visit again. We Chinese can buy the place any day .

Punchbowl has lost its punch. Disappointing. Formerly a great pub with fine food and the option to enjoy a pint downstairs in the old school establishment followed by a terrific meal upstairs in a modern environment. No more upstairs (except for private party bookings) and the downstairs lost its edge. Service is poor. Three asks for a beer before she remembered to bring one. Food ok but the negatives outweigh. Positive energy of the past is passed

We just had the best experience with the staff and the food and the atmosphere at the punch bowl. We are from the US and we enjoy talking politics and culture and we had the best discussion with all three people including Liz who waswas great.

I'm actually speechless by how rude the staff were. They sent me rude emails about my booking and overcharged me. This is a snobby pub, don't bother!

Having been before under their old old management/owners, was looking forward to see what food and service would be like since the new ownership - both fab!

First trip to London in a year so I was really looking forward to dinner but it was sooooo disappointing. The atmosphere was really bad- we were seated in front of the area where they put dishes etc, so we were looking at used plates, a bin, and a coffee machine with old, cold drinks. Really off putting. My dinner was awful. I ordered beef cheek. I’ve had beef cheek before & it’s delicious. This was so sickening it made me feel really sluggish. The fat was so undercooked, it was difficult to separate it from the beef.My water glass was dirty and smelt bad. I asked for a new one, that smelt too so didn’t drink it. I was gasping for a drink. I’m noticeably heavily pregnant. The staff could see that, could see I wasn’t drinking water and could see I had left my meal & didn’t eat the meat. They could see why, as the plate was full of undercooked fat. And they still charged full price which was £100 for two people. Really disappointing. They saw a heavily pregnant not eat or drink and they still charged full price.

My friends and I stopped here for a drink and ended up sharing a deli board, which was absolutely delicious. A nice atmosphere, very charming.

Lovely to see a proper London pub with heart and soul!We popped in for lunch, it was busy and found one guy running the place on his own, not flustered or stressed and the service was impeccable.It turns out he is the new manager, if his team are as capable and personable as he is then the Punchbowl is in good hands.He made 2 homesick S.Africans feel very at home and it was great so have some banter with someone nowadays.Such a shame its not our local!

We visit a range of central London pubs every year and at last we have found one that actually has a working coffee machine producing delicious coffee.The boys were happy as well with the good range of beers on offer.Loved the ambience and the service and even more bonus points they serve an excellent champagne by the glass at a very reasonable price.Menu looked enticing as well.Lovely welcoming London pub. We will definitely return for a lunch.London quiet but The Punchbowl busy - says it all!

The top floor private dining room for twelve of us is atmospheric , and comfortable, and the service was friendly and excellent . The food was good

El pub debe tener problemas para tratar con la autoridad local de licencias. Un grupo de nosotros llegó a las 10. 10 pm para encontrar las luces exteriores apagadas y un portero en la puerta. Inmediatamente nos dijo que el pub dejó de servir a las 11 de la noche, ¡lo cual parecía algo extraño para contarle a un grupo de personas en sus 50 y 60 s! A classic London pub, tucked away down a side street in Mayfair - good choice of wine and a lovely Sunday roast dinner. Served hot and tasty- reservations are recommended but not required - could be busy at peak times. Friendly staff and attentive service.

We stopped by this quaint bar for a quick drink but ended up staying much longer than planned. This little gem is so worth a visit and will be on our list for every upcoming London trip. Great location and exquisite service (a special thank you to Richard)Would highly recommend a visit !!!!!

Such a quaint, fun and inviting pub! Very friendly and attentive staff. Richard was a friendly face to see every night we visited. He was fun and helpful at the bar as well as giving some encouraging and valuable visitors’ tips. I would recommend this pub to anyone in the area!!

Mi esposo y yo estamos visitando Londres por primera vez y pasé horas buscando el lugar perfecto para una cena romántica realmente agradable un domingo por la noche en la ciudad. Después de leer una reseña en GQ sobre los "comedores" de Punchbowl (no pub), decidí que sonaba como un lugar que sería perfecto para nosotros. Reservé la mesa, recibí una confirmación de reserva que decía "Comedor". Cuando llegamos, subimos las escaleras hacia el comedor para ser recibidos por dos caballeros que nos miraron como si estuviéramos locos. Dijo que ya estaban cerrados. Esta fue una reserva de 7:30 pm.

Called in for a drink being in Mayfair. This is what I would call a traditional London pub. Nice atmosphere with great interior. Prices what you would expect in this area

It is a mystery how traditional pubs survive in Mayfair in 2019. But thank the Lord some do! This one has a pleasant ambiance, pleasant staff; good beer and a pleasing menu. Not haute cuisine but very enjoyable.

I was disappointed with this place. Service was untrained and not sharp. The food was OK, but that’s all. The room was quite nice. Bland is not a good outcome. Fish and chips was a generous portion. Roast beef, ordinary. Yorkshire pudding, disappointing.

From the outside it doesn’t look like the food will be that special as it looks like a typical pub but I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and choice of food. I had the venison steak which was really good!

It is certainly a very nice, british-traditional venue in a wealthy neighborhood of London with nice rooms and settings. But not necessarily with the most refined food you would expect at such a place. Large portions though, but not overly well presented and not outstanding in taste or service. So ... average. Sorry.

We were only in London for the day and were staying at a hotel that was walking distance to this pub. I looked it up prior to our arrival in London and wanted to try an authentic English Pub. Great fun, friendly staff...everything I hoped for.

Sadly, the food quality and presentation failed to impress. The pub has obvious signs of wear and tear, added to that was a leaking ceiling in the women's loo. We were drawn to visit due to the website description and all. Credit to bartending staff and waiter who were quick, helpful and friendly. Chefs do have off days sometimes, this may be one of those days. The grilled fish was too salty and the taste of the toffee pudding was too unbalanced. Great to hear though that they have taken our suggestion on board when we recommended they check one specific ingredient.

Being able to serve punters in something resembling the correct order is a basic fundamental of bartending. These guys are either not up to it, or don’t care; either way I left without buying a drink in what used to be a great boozer.

Great traditional London pub just off Hyde Park. Just stopped for drinks. Great atmosphere and lots of polished wood. Menu looked great but couldn't say what food was like.

Having taken two US visitors to a traditional English country pub the previous night and had a dreadful experience, I was staking my reputation on The Punchbowl and it didn't disappoint. The ambience, welcome, friendliness, service, drink and food were all perfect. A memorable experience.

It is a great pub - the waitress was fantastic (Young Spanish girl) - we did not eat - just drinks - but the toilets are at the top of the building - up 3 flights of stairs - just ridiculous in this day and age - dont go there if your in a wheelchair !!!

Although on the pricey end for a pub, the location is obviously a justification & given the food served which is good enough to rival some of the local restaurants. The classic pub caters for all occasions, we had a business meeting, in the booth next to us an American family and into the bar; local workers enjoying the drinks.

Escondido en una pequeña calle, me sorprendió encontrar este pub tan ocupado el jueves a la hora del almuerzo. Hay una buena variedad de bebidas de barril y la selección de comida ofrecida fue impresionante, además de ser bastante costosa. Took an international group here for a casual dinner at the end of a series of meetings over a number of nights in London. We chose The Punchbowl for location, history and reputation and was not disappointed. We were seated in the upstairs dining room and looked after by a very good attentive lady who also looked after the whole room very well. Food was nicely presented and well received as was the wine that came with it.

Even on a busy Friday evening the efficient service meant that there was little delay in getting a decent pint. A good selection of beer, Scottish visitors might be pleasantly surprised. Food is available, but it wasn't that kind of a visit. Being Mayfair the crowd control on the pavement outside was a bit fierce, but polite.

Had dinner here on our first night in London on the recommendation of a friend. A great experience. The ales were excellent and the food very good. A 10 minute walk from Green Park tube station. Quite lively (in a good way) with the upper-crust set from the posh Mayfair neighborhood. I had the veal chop; my wife, the sea-bass. Nice way to kick off our 5 days in London! Ta!

We stopped here whilst we were out and about in London the decor is lovely it's a very homly feel to it the staff are lovely and it was a nice quite place to have a drink

The Punchbowl rounded off a lovely weekend with my son by producing simply top end pub food.

We arrived 1hr late for our reservation, but that was no issue, table was free for us and they made us feel welcome. Needed a drinks order as SOON as we sat down, hadn't even got chance to review the wine menu.

Probably the best staff I have ever come across in a pub! Tadgh, Marco and Ben were the friendliest and most welcoming staff who made mine and my wife’s evening. The pub was really busy with both drinkers and diners who all seemed very happy to be in this little gem of a pub. I don’t live near it and only visited on a recommendation by a London cabby but will definitely seek it out next time.

This pub has the British atmosphere and is lovely. I would recommend the larger and lime. Good service and friendly.

This is the pub you visit to have great pub food in a traditional venue. But you don't have to use your elbows to reach the bar. Everything is nice and the staff takes very good care of you. Ask for a "box" and you and your friends can eat without being disturbed.

Posiblemente ahora mi pub favorito en Londres y definitivamente mi favorito en Mayfair. La comida y la bebida son excelentes (pruebe el ponche de barril y el bacalao en el menú, ambos excelentes como los mejillones como entrante) y el servicio es cordial y de primera clase. Tighe (disculpas por mi atroz ortografía pero culpo a la cerveza) fue increíble, al igual que el resto del personal. Loved everything about this place! We went here for our "date night" and it was such a nice evening! We both had the steak and it was cooked absolutely perfectly! The service was great and the staff were extremely friendly - even helped us pick out the right wine to accompany our meal, thank you! Loved the decor, felt very relaxed and warm :) We'll definitely be coming back :)

I visited this restaurant with my family and we had the most exceptional experience! The food was superb! We stayed for a 3 course meal and they offered a wonderful selection of vegetarian options which made my family very happy! The customer service was also excellent! We would highly recommend this fantastic place! 5/5 stars!

This was a large dinner party that we organised. The location was great, private room was perfect, it had a great atmosphere. However, the service was at best chaotic. We had a lovely waitress but one who had little experience of looking after a full room. Wine glasses were overfilled, the wines were not offered to be tasted by the organiser, (one was corked and bottles were opened without being asked). Re the food they had insufficient stocks of the basics like Steaks and Veal and when it arrived it was lukewarm and late. We had beefburgers as replacements and were charged for the full menu price despite the cheaper alternative. Sticky Toffee pudding was lukewarm and dry/crusty - a real disappointment. The senior staff kindly gave us two bottles of free wine which was a nice move to make up for the shortages but I cannot really recommend this place. Insufficiently stocked kitchens and wine cellars and then a service which was full of enthusiasm but weak on service with unremarkable food is not a recipe for success. You are charging too much for a second rate pub service. As my colleague remarked this is a wannabe gastro pub which is way short on the skills and cuisine to come close. Sorry to be damning but that is a high price to be charging for what you are offering. Time to raise the game.

The Punchbowl es un encantador y pintoresco pub georgiano en medio de Mayfair. Seis miembros del club BNO se reunieron aquí para una reunión anual el jueves por la noche. El lugar estaba lleno de hombres y mujeres de negocios y, como el espacio es limitado, era bastante caótico. Me aventuré hasta el restaurante del primer piso más tranquilo, pero que carecía de ambiente. Hay un comedor privado en el siguiente piso con aseos tranquilos y ordenados en el último piso administrativo. Nos acomodamos en la ruidosa zona del bar, pero luego nos llevaron a un lugar más tranquilo y cómodo al final del bar, lo cual es realmente agradable. Monkey Jim y yo teníamos hamburguesas, que eran excelentes. . . Junto con el Punchbowl amargo. Recomendado.

Had trouble finding a not-posh place for a Mayfair dinner that would be affordable and relaxed with good food. this fit the bill. Had soup and salad followed by the best sticky toffee pudding I had in the uk. Nice wine list too.

My wife’s director was in town staying in a hotel in Mayfair so we decided to come to this relatively famous pub for Sunday lunch as was convenient for the director over from Italy. The service was excellent, the meal was very good, All in all an enjoyable lunch.... I was surprised they were using Lamb rack for Sunday roast.... Extensive wine list as well.

My cousin and I booked here for supper and we had a lovely meal - fish and chips for me and bangers and mash for him !! Lovely bottle of red and a pint of the pubs beer - very friendly bar staff and a lovely waitress - even had a pudding which was tasty

The Punchbowl is an old English pub in a quiet area of Mayfair. The food is very food, they have great beers and nice wines by the glass. The Waite staff are friendly and welcoming. Good food at reasonable prices.
