The menu looked great but the chowder was more like tinned soup with msg and the haddock bites small for the price. The game and apricot casserole was apparently neither gamey nor had any apricot taste but was overall a pleasant meal. The Hake main was nearly great but the hasselback potatoes lacked herb or seasoning and the tarragon was not evident. The young waiter was very amiable but we had a three time fail on the wine, first choice was sold out but he hadn’t been told, second was available but wasn’t cold (a white), third was ordered as a Rioja but was given as an Argentinian Malbec and just left on the table for us to serve ourselves. At this price point it needs to be better.

Came for Sunday roast dinner. It was very delicious!! They have local beers too that we enjoyed trying and were very tasty. The atmosphere is nice being in a historic building. The service is good. Sunday lunch: Nice welcome and friendly staff. Obviously popular, people turning up on spec. were being told no tables available until much later on the day. Advisable to book well ahead. A little understaffed on a busy Sunday. Food arrived just a little late. Well presented and tasty meal but had likely gone a little cold due to a service bottleneck. Nice surroundings, a relaxed atmosphere. Fair priced DJS

I think the high ratings noted come from the choice of beverages available and the homely feel inside. This is because the food on offer itself is distinctly average. The much vaunted steak & ale pie seemed to have been sitting around for a while. Thankfully, the mushroom risotto was a hit. Also, the beer was bottled but came flat? Would be nice on a winters night but wouldn't return to eat.

Really terrible experience, we booked this as a treat for our holiday weekend to receive what is probably the worst dining experience we have ever had and I am someone who tries to support businesses and give the benefit of the doubt when things don’t go smoothly so I hardly ever complain…. However we where left for aprox an hour and 15 mins waiting for our starters (nobody even asked if we needed any more drinks) when every other table around us had received their starters and mains, it was only when we managed to get the attention of a waitress we pointed out that we basically had been abandoned that we finally got our food, being fair the starters where quite tasty and good so at this point decided to give the benefit of the doubt and put the long wait behind us….. problem being it just got worse from here, it took them 20 mins to come and Collect our starter plates so at this point I complained again to be told there was an issue in the kitchen, looking around the restaurant nobody else was suffering this problem which then just re enforced the original thought that we had simply been forgotten about, when the mains finally came the bread was wrong on the steak sandwich but we had waited so long we where afraid to return it,I had the 6oz flat iron steak which was terrible, ordered it medium rare but by the time it come it was more like well done and about the size of a hamburger which makes me think it spent some time under the heat lamps,I was never even given cutlery, after trying my best to get the attention of a waitress I finally gave in as I was worried about it going cold and just took the cutlery off another table from the other side of the room, the steak was tough and over cooked and to be honest I’ve had better for half the price in a Wetherspoons, we where never even asked if we wanted a desert so at this point we just gave up and decided to leave as we felt very unwelcome,so we finally asked for the bill, after it came we where just abandoned again! after another 20 mins feeling very annoyed I finally caved and had to physically go up to the counter and ask to pay so we could leave the place and put this terrible experience behind us, the final kick in the guts came when I was over charged by around £35 even though the waitress had the bill right in front of her, I appreciate it’s easy to make mistakes but this was just the icing on the cake of what was probably the worst dining experience we have ever had and we eat out alot and never ever complain, if your in Ambleside do yourselves a favour and choose somewhere else, there are so many lovely venues with great service around the town but this place just simply isn’t one of them….. as we where leaving we also witnessed the waitress being very rude to another customer, somebody needs to step in and give some customer service training

I was really looking forward to eating here and I was so disappointed at the awful experience we had. We had booked a table for late lunch. We arrived at 3.30 and were sat in a separate area of the restaurant away from the other diners in a section with just one other couple on a table. Which at the time seemed fine. We had a look at the menu, ordered and received our drinks. We then waited and watched the other couple have their starters and mains and plenty of dishes being carried through to the busy section of the restaurant. After an hour we asked about our food and received an apology and were told there was only one chef in the kitchen. Shortly after we received an extra round of drinks as an apology. We did comment we felt we had been forgotten about but we were told this wasn’t the case. Eventually after an hour and ten minutes our starters arrived. We had the crab chowder which was very fresh and tasty the bread which it came with was very dry and crumbly though, my partner had the pork starter which he said was ok. When we finished our starters we waited twenty minutes until someone came and took our plates and then our mains arrived almost immediately. At this point we’d been here almost two hours. My steak sandwich which I had ordered on granary bread arrived on white broken bread which was hard I imagine from being sat under a heat lamp for some time. My partner ordered the flat iron steak medium rare which wasn’t a flat iron when it came it was more like a 4oz rump, it was very small and more medium well it wasn’t pink at all again possibly from having sat under the heat lamp. Neither main was particularly pleasant but we really just wanted to finish and carry on with our day at this point. No cutlery came with the mains either and no one came back to check on us so we took some cutlery off another table. Eventually we heard one waitress ask if someone else could check on table three which was us which made us feel awful like they were purposefully ignoring us for having been there so long. We did point out we hadn’t received what we’d ordered but said we didn’t want to send anything back and wait any longer. Once our plates were cleared from mains again no one came back. I had to go up to the desk and ask for our bill which was brought over but not followed by anyone coming to take payment so we went up to pay on our way out. Our bill came to £59.55 My partner paid on card and then noticed on his phone he had paid £98.15! He questioned this with the waitress who apologised and said she’d inputted the wrong amount!?! A refund was issued which took 24 hours to come back. All in all we had a terrible experience and absolutely will not be returning! Also as we were leaving the waitress was serving a table who had come in next to us where we heard her apologise and tell them she can’t understand Scottish accents!!!

Such a lovely person, with an excellent sense of humour The lunch was superb - excellent food served piping hot. No room for a dessert. Our second visit was two days later to enjoy the Fish Night. Our choice was salmon with vegetables and Thai fish curry - cod and prawns - with rice, which was just superb. The restaurant was fully booked on both days. We wholly recommend The Priest Hole. Our early dinner (around 6pm) at this restaurant was disappointing. The starters (chicken noodle soup and crab chowder) were tasty. My steak and ale pie main had a crust which was impossible to cut in places and the meat, although generous in amount, was dry. It was delivered with chips, rather than the mash I ordered but this was put right very quickly once I was able to flag down a waitress. My husband’s sirloin steak was on the rare side of the medium which he ordered and there was quite a lot of fat. The two onion rings which came with his meal were overcooked. We both love our vegetables with a bit of bite but the beans and cabbage were virtually raw. This was less of a problem for my husband who had a sharp steak knife but I had trouble cutting through my veg. We weren’t offered more drinks during our meal and we had to go to the cash desk to pay, despite having requested the bill. At over £80 for two courses for two, one soft drink and a bottle of beer, this wasn’t good value for money and we won’t be going back to this restaurant.

Standards have dropped. A waitress took our order, and didn't write it down.. got it wrong. Pork belly, usually fatty, but this was 95% fat and under cooked. Pie was good but dry on the outside where it had been cooked. We have been to The Priest Hole many times, this was really disappointing.

My wife and I first came here for Sunday lunch in September 2023 and the food and service was excelent, however we came in September 2024 and were sadly very disappointed. I can honestly say this was the worst Sunday lunch we have ever had. I had roast beef which most of it was fat and my wife had pork, which was no better. The mashed potatoes were cold, the veg were under cooked, the roast potatoes and Yorkshire Puddings were obiously cooked the day before. We will definately not be going there again, £50.25 for two sunday lunches and 2 drinks, what a rip off

The service, setting and atmosphere were quite lovely..... The food was terrible (to put it politely). The crab chowder tasted like a tin of Heinz chunky veg soup with some crab meat on top. The bread it came with was stale. The bbq pork belly was 80% fat. The "sirloin" steak was sinewy, fatty and chewy and 2 onion rings cost £2.50. The pan fried hake itself was cooked well. The hassle back potatoes it came with were sad, boiled new potatoes with cuts in them. The samphire was bitter, lardons undercooked and the velouté was thick and gelatinous with too much corn flour and tasteless. The major downside with the service was not being asked why our food was uneaten and no offer of removal from the bill. £100 spent to leave feeling hungry. Sad times.

Very disappointed with this restaurant my family were celebrating my Mum's 80th Birthday in Ambelside and we chose this restaurant based on the reviews, for our Saturday night out. Where to even begin, after my Mum almost choked on undercooked cabbage and dry chicken, when asked was everything OK, My Mum discreetly tried to explain the issue, we were then subjected to a condecending lecture on cuts of chicken, from a bolshy loud, unprofessional member of staff who we were later told was the manager or owner. My mum was visibly upset by the whole debarcle. I was seething but refused to behave in the same manner, on leaving I tried to speak with this person and suggested that in future if a paying CUSTOMER gives feedback, she might try to be more discreet, professional & understanding and lower the tone of her voice, in return she argued back with me displaying the same behaviour, saying she did not behave in that way. Exasperated, I held my hand up and left with my family in disgust. £300 wasted. You can't put class or intelligence where there is none! Thankfully other establishments in Ambelside were excellent and very customer focused 👏 The one star was for one young girl who was waiting on and was charming.

We visited for Sunday lunch to celebrate a family birthday. It was quite busy but not all the tables were occupied. The food (we all had a Sunday roast) was good and we enjoyed it. Unfortunately the service was really poor and at times unwelcoming. It took over 20 minutes before we were even able to order drinks (and that was only when we approached the bar area). By that time we had decided to give starters a miss and opted straight for a main course. The mains came out in a timely fashion and we all enjoyed them. We ordered more drinks which felt like an absolute inconvenience to the staff and felt like they were thrown on the table when they arrived. Strangely, whilst we were still eating, they started to try and clear our plates from the table. And at the end of the mains, as we were thinking about whether to try a dessert, we were simply brought the bill. Overall, despite the roast dinners being good, we didn't feel very welcome at all and I don't think we would return, given all the options in Ambleside.

Called in here at the last minute for a Sunday roast. Alas, it was quite an average Sunday roast. The lamb was dry and chewy with lots of fatty bits (maybe some people enjoy this? Alas not me). Very stodgy sides, with no fresh green veg to cut the heaviness a bit. It looked very good when it arrived on the plate but didn’t live up to its good looks. Desserts were quite good, though the rhubarb crumble came with custard that to be honest smelt and tasted off. Luckily the staff were very nice and replaced it with some ice cream for us! Overall expensive for what you get and we likely won’t be back.

When in Ambleside we always eat here at least once, but I don't think we will again. We had precooked a table and on attending a near empty restaurant we were shown to a table near to the draughty entrance. I asked to be seated near the window but was told that it was booked also. The waiter wasn't bothered and my wife made me leave it so we sat where we had been ordered to. We shared a camembert as a starter, and to be fair, it wasn't big enough for one. The main made up for that though with the steak pie being awesome.

Greeted by a miserable waiter and shown to our table with a grunt, left for 20 mins until we asked if we could order, had to go and ask for a drinks menu. Soup was lovely but it all went down hill from there, we were visiting on Easter Sunday which may have contributed to the issue, but they had run out of one of the 3 starters and the lamb. ( there was still 2.5hrs of service left) We were a party of 6 and were all served plates of fat, luke warm anaemic roast potatoes, 1piece of cauliflower and swede purée with a teaspoon of red cabbage which was the veg accompaniment. One upside was our miserable server was replaced by a lovely lady who was equally horrified at what we had been served and gave us all free desserts. We have been here every year at Easter but unfortunately after today’s experience we won’t be back. Thank you to the lovely server who saved a terrible meal with her friendliness!

Best to avoid. Kept waiting and waiting for food and service. Took 1hr30 before we got our mains, others told us to leave and we should have listened. Didn't bring us things we ordered. Water, one soup starter and two Yorkshire puddings missing. Then they charged us for the Yorkshire puddings in a veggie when it is listed on the menu!! I guess vegetarians don't deserve Yorkshire puddings included. Raw wellington! See photo Pathetic size of mashed potato and everything really. The soup was good. The waiter was doing his best but got 4 things wrong about the order.

We waited for a long time to be served, then almost an hour to get the food, which came cold. Meat was tough and inedible. Paid £30 for a meal for one person, and left hungry unfortunately

Booked 2 weeks in advance. Kept waiting without being given menus or offered drinks. After 20 minutes we got menus and ordered drinks. Drinks came 10 mins later and only then were we told they had run out of roasts and only had steak. They had our phone number so should have rung to let us know. Wouldn't have been so bad if they'd told us as soon as we arrived. Sad because this used to be my favourite Ambleside restaurant.

Just moved to UK and decided to visit the Lake District on my 4th month! I regret I only came to this restaurant on my last night in Ambleside! This will definitely be my go to place when I come back in summer. I came at around 5:30pn on Saturday, without booking and staff offered me a table for ine which she said will only be available for an hour. I was worried but even I reached an hour they did not bother me at all or rush me. I had the day's special which is a darbe of salmon, then sticky toffee pudding for dessert. It is pricier than other restaurants in the area but the quality id so much better and I'd better pay more to be spared from disappointment. I enjoyed my dinner! Salmon was perfectly cooked and seasoned well. Sticky toffee pudding was also very good!! Portion sizes are big enough.

Absolutely amazing place with delicious food. A must visit when you’re around! We got the camembert to share. Although it was very tasty, the focaccia that it comes with could be better. We had steak & ale and chicken & mushroom pie as mains and they were delicious. We were too full to get a desert but I will definitely eat here again next time I am around!

My wife and I enjoyed the "Early Bird" menu which is great value at £14.95 for 2 courses and £18.95 for 3 courses. I had the steak (£5 supplement). It came with a peppercorn sauce and was gorgeous. It was actually one of the best steaks I've had. My wife had the Cumberland Sausage and she said it, too, was first class. We both had the rhubarb crumble with custard which was a good size and, again, hit the spot. Total bill £40 for dinner for two, including 2 soft drinks, and including STEAK, in the heart of one of the prettiest towns in the Lake District, isn't at all bad. Would thoroughly recommend.

Well I won't be going back ,the food was awful ...the tomato ,basil and pesto soup had a horrible sharp but sugary sweet taste...the sandwich that came with it had the cheapest bright yellow " butter "on. ,a maximum of one slice of ham and the cheapest mustard . My 4 year old grandson could have made a better sandwich ! My husband had pie which had hardly any meat in it and the gravy was unusual tasting ( to say the least ) and sweet . I've had far superior microwave meals ! The toilets which were always an asset to the pub had gone downhill too.

As soon as we walked through the door the staff were welcoming and very attentive. The food was lovely and good value for money. We sat outside which is a great little sun trap for those rare sunny days in the Lake District. We would high recommend and we will definitely be back .

We have been here many times over the years and love it. Dropped in for a drink last week. Wooooah! £9.80 for a Prosecco and a pint of cider shandy is the same price as a pint of cider - about £7. So by that maybe a pint of lemonade is also £7? I’m sure many people stop for a drink while walking in the beautiful lakes but next time we might find another stopping point. Although living in the North East maybe we just have cheaper pubs up here??!!

Cold and smelled of dogs on arrival. Waited ages to be served and the waitress was more interested on who was at the bar rather than taking our table order for 10 people. Food was very salty and the steak pie in particular was terrible. Every meal as standard/basic or frozen style food. The whole place is run down and miserable. We went off trip advisor reviews as well on a visit to the area and wished we hadn’t. Go to The Pheasant Inn down the road at Allithwaite instead that was lovely food and fab service.
