The Portland Hotel in Chesterfield

Standard JD Weathetspoons. Very busy in town with cheap bear. Only at least 2 beers had ran out. But sorted latter. Will be back Food being eaten by others looked great and was a reasonable price. Certainly good value, especially the coffees. The other Weatherspoons in town has better coffee?

We called in for breakfast and it was very good. One cooked English breakfast plus one breakfast muffin, arrived on our table within 5 minutes. Good service, helpful staff. Free refils on the coffee too.

My daughter and I went for some food on the 1st April. We was charged wrong for hers which ok it was 60p over this we got back then I noticed that eve I was charged incorrect they charged me for a large breakfast brunch but I only had a small one I've returned to once again complain. And was told by the manager because it was yesterday he couldn't give me my refund so I would have to get in touch with head office.. yet on the site it's stated the pub manager should deal with it as they will probably pass it back on to them.. I will never go back again

Archie and Mikail were perfect hosts- servers etc and made the visit VERY ENJOYABLE- WE 'DO' come again because of this kind of service- it was absolutely teeming with folk today after the run and the footie win yesterday- it just shows how many people feel this the perfect venue to celebrate and socialise- this couldn't be done without the quality of service that is provided! "BOTH THESE YOUNG LADS (That I watched served so many in so little time) deserve a bonus!"

How the staff are here... Not only did they loose our order and even after chasing twice, after 40minutes waiting there was nothing they could do. Shocking customer service absolutely no sympathy and to be told we're busy you'll just have to wait, even for a cheap place to eat is shocking even for me Place is a joke... No wonder these are shutting pubs if this is representative of their service

Had 3 meals all cold 2 cups of tea with milk that was off complained and was offered another cup of tea free of charge. The person i ordered the food from Has a face that was not happy and made me feel like he was doing me a favour just by serving me very rude as well. Cost me £27 for that experience. It was Thurs between 1 and 2.30 on the 21st of march when were in there table 5 /6 if this information is needed

Great location in the centre of chesterfield. Classic wetherspoons with plenty of drinks options behind the bar. Traditional wetherspoons menu all reasonably priced. Comfortable and ample seating with outdoor seating available aswell. Accessible toilets available.

The whetherspoons was one of the better ones I've been in, used the app to order drinks & food, which was really good. Location is the town centre, so expect to pay parking fees if your driving, the pub itself doesn't have its own car park, whereas the hotel side had space for around 4 cars. Other than that, I would recommend and know doubt go again.

Stayed the night as meeting up with family. Lovely meal and atmosphere friendly staff. Lovely nights sleep comfortable bed and clean room. Would come back again.

Amazing location a beautiful building with a past. Staff friendly and very helpful great food good beer ( Guinness) our stay has been exceptional.

First time we have stayed in a Wetherspoon hotel and would return again. Hotel room was very spacious, modern and clean. Good value for money. The only disappointing thing would be the breakfast, it was nearly cold, bacon was tasteless, have had better Wetherspoons breakfasts elsewhere.

Hectic when we went in. Was a customer who smelt strongly of urine next to coffee machine at end of bar No staff members challenged or asked him to move. Very unpleasant and was in there all day

When shopping in Chesterfield we always call in here for a lovely coffee buy on mug and refill as many times as you like free And ther Rump steak is second to none

Affordable priced food. Good service. Tables cleared and cleaned regularly. Was a good meeting place today.

You need to ensure a parking space before arrival which I didn’t know about, fortunately I was allotted their last space. Couldn’t get a response from the entrance buzzer so had to climb stairs to the pub entrance then more stairs to the reception. There a then more stairs to the room on second floor. The evening meal was ok, better than expected so absolutely no problems with dinner nor service. Breakfast: it states mushroom so that’s what you get, a mushroom. Bacon tasteless. Sausages, eggs, hash browns were great; my wife’s not so good; pancakes ok but maple syrup substitute was awful - not worth it oh, and bacon didn’t arrive until we mentioned it. Service chap was professional and accommodating. You get what you pay for so one night is enough.

Verry bad expirence with the manger ordered a drink forgot I'd so asked for a refund refused refund and declined the drink forcing my pregnant partner to drink it

Typical spoons Food average Items missing from plate but on complaint they stated they had run out of onion rings. I asked what they intended to do about it? They fetched a guy from the kitchen and offered an alternative. They quickly brought me a side salad.

On a visit to Chesterfield we dropped in for lunch. My husband said it was one of the best Panini's he'd had, plenty of filling, must be good if he commented 😄

Catherine, bar staff she is amazing and good at her job. Shes always alert and spots and prevents potential trouble. Totally feel safe as a customer when she is on shift.

Lovely hotel in a perfect setting. Great food, drinks and service.Only one little qualm. The heating was not on in the room Saturday morning but I was able to use the aircon to heat the room.

Last visited three years ago. Popular place. Was quite busy on first visit so no table for four of us but someone offered to swap tables. Good selection of real ales. Ate at the other Wetherspoon this time. Just had drinks here. Staff were helpful but was not happy to see one staff member emptying the drip tray from the water dispenser back into the said dispenser. That really put us off. Updated 2024 - this has become one of our favourite Wetherspoons. Over the New Year it was lovely as it was really quiet with only a few of us in there. We like to pop in for coffee, food and drinks.

Lovely hotel spacious very clean rooms friendly staff great location .First time I have stayed in a weatherspoons hotel but would definitely book again. Great outside area. We were on the top floor and although there is a lift in the hotel it doesn't go to the top floor. This wasn't a problem for me but could be if you have mobility issues.

Was out with a friend for lunch on Sunday 29th October.ordered the 3 dishes for £14.95. The chicken strips where nice ,but the pizza and Mexican chips where freezing cold . When we told the the waitress she just snarled and took our plates away VERY RUDE

We find this one of the best in the chain. The housekeeping is superb and the staff are very helpful and friendly. They are a pleasure to meet ! Park in the saltergate as its secure, cheap and 5 mins away Gets busy but that adds to the ambience. Worth every penny !

This is the third Wetherspoons hotel we have stayed at and this one didn’t disappoint either! The staff were incredible, covering all jobs and situations from Reception, to taking food orders, working on the bar or clearing tables, they were all amazing. We stayed over the weekend and although Saturday night in the bar was very full, we heard no noise in the hotel room. Thank you all for making our stay in Chesterfield memorable.

I went with a mate (24 & 25 years of age) He bought the drinks and we began to chill outside, within 5 minutes, a guy from the bar came out to ask if I had ID - I said no not on me, he then proceeded to grab my pint that had just been paid for and said you cant have this then & confiscated it. This is a regular pub that we visit on a weekly basis, hundreds of £ has already been spent here & on so many occasions I have provided my ID. I do not look 16 years old and definitely don't expect to be treated like a child and dehumanised over a pint of san Miguel. Safe to say thats my last visit here, Nice, cheap, clean place - yet spoilt by one d*head. You made the mistake serving 1 person for 2 drinks without checking ID, you should not allow people to pay £4 then come and sneak out 5 minutes later to take it off them. Its not the money its the principle.

Couldn't fault this hotel, such good value. Its clean, comfortable and has everything you need. The staff were excellent, so helpful. The meal we had was lovely.

Stayed overnight very reasonably priced and the room was well equipped and comfortable situated in the centre and easy to find the staff where very pleased help full

Visited the portland pub got the american 6oz burger it came with 15 chips , staff was great but food never again will i return to this pub

Always like coming here, chilled out atmosphere. Good value for food and drink, you get very good portions. Food is always hot, you can also get food and drink via the app. Staff are always pleasant too.

Every time we come here for Sunday lunch we are always greeted with fantastic service, Ash has served us many time now and is the best, hes always polite and pleasant and nothing is ever too much

What a lovely clean and welcoming Spoons, very spacious and not noisy even at peak times. Had the managers special fish and chips, wife said it was one of the best she had in any pub, well done 👏

Until yesterday, this was my favourite JDW pub. Sorry, no more. Busy, yes, but...people moaning about ''sour'' milk in their hot drinks, limited real ale choice, table in our area not cleared for 90 minutes, staff bickering....and both myself and my colleagues suffered numerous flea bites to our ankles. Ugh. (Plus screens - and toaster - not working in kitchen and people vaping inside.)

This has to be one of the busiest Wetherspoons pubs anywhere, from morning to night, both inside and out and it is a large building. The minute seats become available, they are filled. The day seems to run through the whole gambit of noise, from screaming kids, noisy drunks and overly loud individuals, who seem to think that everyone else, should have the pleasure of hearing what they are talking about. It is like the strangest and noisiest people in the UK, have all been dumped here. There is the traditional hard as nails seating, synonymous with Wetherspoons pubs. I suppose that they don't think that decent, comfy seats would survive the onslaught. There were a number of problems with food shortages and considering the bombardment of customers, it is no surprise, except when it happened at breakfast time. Being able to order and pay via the app, is a huge bonus and it would be even better if it wasn't hampered by the useless internet, which is a pain having to sign in all the time. The drinks selection is superb and the prices are still very good, which is probably why the place is so busy all the time. It would be better if the bar person didn't slam your pint on the table, spilling what the little head that it had. Both drinks and food were pretty reasonable on the whole and the pub was nicely decorated with both artworks and historical, factual pieces. So well done for that. Get a decent Internet provider that doesn't require constant signing in, get comfy seats and give your beer some body, then it won't go flat. Finally, get used plates and glasses cleaned up much quicker, wipe the tables down and keep the floor clean and tidy.

Excellent double room with everything very clean, large bathroom with walk in double shower and bath sheets rather than the usual tiny bath towel! Bed linen super soft and well stocked tray of tea, coffee etc with additional bottles of water and packets of biscuits. Need to book car parking at time of booking. Arrived about 9pm, food still available in restaurant and this was very quick and good value.

We went in at the weekend for a quick breakfast. I ordered the mushroom benedict, husband had the wrap and we wanted a round of toast to got with the, "No, you can't have toast".... OK we assumed the toaster had broke or something reasonable like that. BUT the chap at the next table had beans on toast and his wife had a full English with...you guessed it toast! Turns out from chats with other customers they are refusing to do a round of toast other than as part of a meal. Not impressed and i bet their boss wouldn't be either! A pity as the food we DID get was good but not being allowed to order toast left a bad impression

We ate here several times during our stay in Chesterfield.It was quiet early morning, they open at 7, easy to find a table and enjoy breakfast and coffee. Special mention for the lad who hailed from Matlock, great service, a credit to the place.Evenings were busier but you still got served quickly, despite not using the App.Food was well cooked and we thoroughly enjoyed the Valentine meal which offered a good choice, well cooked and presented and a good pudding to finish.No complaints about the place, food, drinks or service. Only slight downside was the level of noise (and language) you had to endure.

Was not happy , Burger bun fell apart was obviously stale , I had fish and chips the next time which was better ! Staff are not outwardly friendly, but seem ok, the odd one behind the bar seemed moody though! I imagine is being overworked! I know it must be a pain serving drinkers! A bit more happiness would work well!

On arrival, our room was missing the sink plug and the bathroom door handle fittings were broken on the inside. Reported to hotel reception and a member of staff came to the room, but it later transpired the sink plug was a known issue.The main issue with the hotel is the incredibly poor WIFI signal. This has been reported on Trip Advisor in other reviews numerous times since 2017 but is still not fixed. Using the excuse of the hotel being an old building is not technically relevant as solutions are available.My Son needed internet access for school work. I bought a Mobile data package to resolve this.I asked to speak the Duty manager. She advised that we could use the bar area, which is not a satisfactory solution, especially after 21:00 when my Son would be too young to be in the bar. She advised she would contact the Area Manager.Later that afternoon I believe I was blanked by the Duty Manager in the Beer Garden when I just tried to acknowledge her walking past our table with a friendly smile.The following morning when going down to breakfast my wife held a door open for her. She thanked us but nothing was mentioned about our complaint. Very unprofessional & dissapointing.We stayed for 2 nights, the Sink & Door faults were still ongoing. The hotel room price is very reasonable, with clean and modern fitments. But the above issues spoilt my first experience of a Wetherspoons hotel.

Visited early evening, checked in and easily found a table. Had the option to order on the app or table service, opted for the app. Ordered the steak club deal which is now available every day, all day!! Had the 8oz gourmet sirloin which comes with chips, peas, tomato, mushroom, onion rings and a sauce plus a drink, a great deal.Meal arrived fairly quickly, my steak was fine but the other one was disappointingly a bit fatty. Staff helpful and friendly plus you know what you're getting with a traditional Spoons pub.

Brill food, pizzas are lovely, the right portion of food for us all. Enjoyed it. Will definitely be returning here. Bring my kids too.

Bad night's sleep with lots of people banging about and singing pipes.Reception staff very understanding and pleasant about the situation.Hotel very full and cheap so to be expected I guess but a night's sleep would have been nice.Think it would put me off staying again if busy.

Decided to go day after lockdown was lifted. Sat and waited half an hour for drinks to be told it was anither 45 minute wait for food. Not happy just walked out.

I went to this pub during a visit to Chesterfield, it was busy at the tim and I decided not to eat,there was a good selection of drinks. Theis is unusual for a Wetherspoon hotel in that on site parking was available, recommended.

I've been to this Wetherspoons a few times and usually I enjoy dining here and the food has always been really good.Hadn't had a pub lunch in a long while due to the covid situation, so was looking forward to eating out again. We were greeted at the door by a staff member, who was polite and helpful. I filled out a track and trace form and we were given a table for 2 next to the door. I didn't want to make a fuss, but I'd rather have sat elsewhere inside the room. After choosing our food via the Wetherspoons app, our drinks were bought to the table. My pint glass had lipstick marks around the top, which as you can imagine, I wasn't impressed by. I had to wait until our food arrived to complain about the the glass.The staff member was pleasant and said she would sort it out and bring me another drink in a clean glass (without ice as I had originally asked for). The staff member who gave me the dirty glass returned with the drink and he'd put ice in it which I didn't want. I asked him if there was any tartare sauce as its meant to come with the Fish and chips, and salt and vinegar. He said that all the sauces etc where located around the corner.So I went to get them and discovered that there wasn't any tartare sauce there at all.I picked up my knife and fork and discovered that they were dirty as well! You would think hygiene would be a priority at all times, especially now!The meal I had ordered was cod,chips and mushy peas. The Fish was hot but not that great, the chips and peas were cold. At this point I was fed up with the whole meal. The toilets could do with some attention as well. No locks on some doors or toilet paper available.Not sure I'll be in a hurry to go back for another meal there.

Greeted at door and requested to fill form in or use QR code for track and trace. Allocated a table which was clean.Tried to use app to order two coffees but it would not work.Allowed to queue at bar (with distancing) and place order. Given two cups and shown self serve machine as per previous normal.If refill required you were asked to request a fresh cup.Did not wish food on this visit but what was seen looked good. Drink prices seemed quite cheap.Generally quite busy and several customers were not obeying directional signage to keep to a one way system but generally not too problematic.

Called in to get away from the sleety ice cold weather and for a light lunch. I had the small brunch which was actually a fair size that I was unable to finish and my husband had the "fish friday" fish and chip deal which he thoroughly enjoyed along with a pint of traditional ale. I had the unlimited coffee which came as a big surprise as in my experience you seldom get unlimited latte's. Can't beat the value either as at just over £12.00 for everything its a very good eat. If you're visiting Chesterfield you can't go far wrong visiting here.

Nice central location and good sized rooms and friendly helpful staff. Rooms were nice and clean would use again in future.

We use the Portland on a regular basis wether it is for a meal or just coffee. The service and food is good. The experience has now been spoilt as we are now cramped due to the lack of space between tables. I understand for the need to accommodate customers but we need to feel comfortable. Please remove some of the extra tables that cannot be used because you can not get to them

Have used this Pub hotel numerous times given location for work meetings etc. Friendly and helpful staff, clean m, comfortable and tidy rooms. Parking limited but always able to pre book a parking space if needed in advanceFood is typical Wetherspoons Fayre - Tip use the app to order it’s quicker and better. Given location bar is always busy and staff do have a lot to deal with from ignorant and impatient customers and all that goes with a busy bar. The staff however are always helpful and friendly For a short stay and central it’s definitely the place to go. It’s a typical Pub Hotel just what I expected

We went out with 2 friends we were staying with for brunch. Decent reasonably priced food, tasty well presented and very edible. The pub was clean and the staff very helpful.

Careful or you will get charged more than you expect. We ordered a cup of coffee then ordered fish chips and peas it was advertised at £6.something but we ended up paying £8. Something for food plus we had to pay separate for the coffee because we hadn’t read their small print. The prominent advert said fish chips and peas and soft drink £6. Something or for £1.00 more with an alcoholic drink. We won’t be going in another Witherspoons

The review is for the hotel and pub, me and my husband stay here quite often we travel from derby to come here we love it and the people! The rooms are big and all the staff are friendly; it’s great value for money and the food is fantastic always comes hot and to a very good standard!!?Steven on the bar is fantastic he always makes us feel very welcome and is extremely friendly we think Steven makes this place! We love to have a good chat with him and he always gives us good advice on things. Thank you to all the people at the Portland who make us feel very welcome we will be back in February! As massive thank you to the wonderful Steven who really does make this place! We think you are fantastic and we consider you as our friend! Good luck in January with the arrival of your baby girl! I booked here for a Sunday night in December, the room was amazing for the price, staff really helpful and friendly, the bed very comfortable, location fab - I'd probably stay again.I couldn't give it 5 stars however as in the morning when I went down to my much anticipated breakfast of poached eggs on avocado/toast I was told "no poached eggs available", when I enquired whether they had eggs it was confirmed however they added they "could not simply poach some for me as it wasn't quite as simple as that", puzzled at the large scale egg poaching operation I had to trek with my case 15 mile to the next whetherspoons, in Sheffield, where there was an eggstravganza of eggs! And not a fellow poached egg eater in sight!Just one other niggle to note - I didn't dig a sketch of Lucifer above my bed when going for midnight tinkies, this should be removed!Other than satanic eggs, it was a clean and comfortable room for the evening.

It's not always the case in this establishment but today we were lucky to get a table, and it was near the fire very comforting on a cold day. Our extended family asked us to be guiny pigs and try the turkey dinner for their future dining, well all I would tell them is dont, the turkey roll was so tough,the carrots like rubber, mash was ok, such a disappointment, even though we all usually enjoy all their value for money meals

Despite there supoosedly being a beer festival when we visited, most beers were in fact 'off' and not available. We had a cheap meal which was just ok, but the service was not existent. Dirty tables waiting to be cleared and staff that couldn't give a hoot.

Lovely modern clean hotel with friendly staff throughout. The pub is a wetherspoons and gets very busy and lively with cheap eats and drinks but that's to be expected. The only niggle I had was how soft the bed was and it moved very easily but that is personal preference. Would definitely stay again and recommend it has a great base to explore the surrounding area. Make sure you reserve a parking spot.

We stopped for a night here and it was top Class! Room was 1st class and decor was deluxe and exceeded our expectations!

Stayed at the Portland for one night as visiting relatives,and because I had my wedding reception here 28 years ago before it was a wetherspoons,the room was great modern, spotless clean,tea, coffee,iron hair dryer,great bathroom and was very quiet,even on Saturday night,and the guy on reception excellent,so 5 stars really for hotel ! Only negative is parking,only room for 10 cars. But had to knock off a point for the bar/ restaurant which is ground floor,not enough bar staff,it was so busy had a problem finding a seat at any time of day,but then I guess that's because Mr wetherspoons has got it right ! Great prices on drinks and food,breakfast was good , but chicken was way over cooked for evening meal,so really 5 Stars for hotel and 4 for Restaurant and bar.

Came here few times in the weekend I was in chesterfield. Ordered fish and chips as it was "fish Friday" OMG I am sorry I didn't take a picture of the fish .. very little of it and was cremated. Only nice thing was the chip shop curry sauce. Also ordered the pizza .. half cooked. Thankfully had a good pint of Coors to wash it down. It's the only good thing about wetherspoons. And less cost than the average pint of Coors. Have never been to chesterfield before it's a nice town but should have went to be other part of town where there are more trendy bars

Twice in one day, two separate male barmen were very abrupt and rude. Two female barmaids were standing behind one male, I asked ‘could we get some service’ and I got ‘they’re both in training and I’m serving. You’ll have to wait’ in a very sharp tone. I don’t expect rude service like this, the food and drinks were lovely but unfortunately the rude men ruined our visit.

I live in Chesterfield and have been here on many occasions, I find there is not enough bar staff actually working behind the bar and they seem to only serve people immediately in front of them and not being able to move along the bar and see who's been waiting longer then others, and on many occasions I have walked out without getting served and yesterday was the last time I walked out, I will never go in this pub again as there are plenty of other pubs in Chesterfield which WILL SERVE YOU.

This was a family lunch and we were very dissappointed. The waitor wasnt friendly and one meal was disgusting with cold steak and veg. Put off from having a replacement steak meal my sister asked for a small pizza instead which tolk 20mins to arrive after rest of party finished so she left it. Total waste of £11 and we definitely won't be going there again. Plus the place wasn't busy. No excuse for not proving good food.

Had to ask for replacement chips as they were cold, and fizzy drinks were flat. Complained and the barman said there was a problem with the carbonator, which they knew about. So why serve fizzy drinks if they knew they wouldn't be fizzy. Not impressed.

Would recommend this hotel,Wetherspoon has really upped there game here.A special word of gratitude for the Receptionist Steven,nothing was too much trouble an absolute pearl in the Wetherspoon crown without a shadow of a doubt. Will certainly be going back again.

We stayed at the Portland hotel for the weekend and we had breakfast and dinner one day at the restaurant! The food was lovely, for breakfast we had the large breakfast, and my husband had the eggs royal, the food was really good eggs were nice and runny and the food was of good quality!! For tea we had the three small plates, which was chicken wings, spicy coated prawns, and chicken bites, food was hot and delicious. My husband had steak egg and chips, the steak was cooked to perfection with runny eggs!!!! Lovely food fantastic service! Can’t wait to come back in December!

A few of us called in today during the Motofest for a drink. Wetherspoons is always a reliable chain and you know what you'll get and they didn't disappoint. Very busy but the staff were great. Recommended

Visited with family, 5 adults, at mid week lunchtime. Found a table easily and ordered food at the bar. Food arrived within 15 minutes, all piping hot and good size portions. Food very good. This place is very handy for Chesterfield Town centre. Will definitely go again. Great value.

Loved it so much I bought shares in the company. I regularly visit for business purposes and it is good value and has good staff
