The Portland Arms Pub in Croydon

The roast is really good! However, other food is quite bland on the menu unfortunately including the veggie burger. Salad is plain, no dressing. Stagf are nice and it's a friendly vibe.

What a fabulous night we had here!!! It was a friends reunion and so we reserved a table. They warned us there was a birthday party with music so it might be noisy but we didn’t mind! Turned out we knew the birthday girl anyway!!! The drinks were reasonably priced and they had a good selection of non alcoholic drinks! The food was quick and really good! I had chicken skewers with salad, toasty bread and hummus and it was delicious! Good portion size too! A member of our group is gluten free and the chef came out personally to advise on menu choices! For dessert the chocolate torte was amazing!!! Thanks to the lovely staff for making our evening a success!!

I come here regularly as I live across the road so I thought it was time I wrote a review. I’ve never had a bad experience here. Let’s start with the food… The chicken wings are amazing! And the Sunday roast is good too. It’s nice not to be short changed when it comes to a gluten free roast (as most places do). The service is always brilliant and the menu changes enough to keep it interesting. The staff are really friendly and attentive. There’s a good selection of drinks available. The pub itself is always spotlessly clean and nicely decorated. The garden is lovely in the summer and there’s always plenty of seats. And it’s very dog friendly (the making of a good pub). I honestly couldn’t fault it.

Tremendously friendly, welcoming team. The manager made a point of bringing my pint to the table once it had settled rather than having me wait at the bar, was much appreciated. Delicious food and great selection of beers- thanks for a tremendous evening!

We’d heard good things about the Portland Arms roasts, and that are gluten free friendly. We finally got to go today and couldn’t be happier with our experience. As the gluten free person I was so well looked after, the service was friendly and accomodating. I’d also requested a quieter corner as we had a hearing impaired person with us, we were therefore sat tucked away and the speaker there was turned off as we arrived, without us having to request it. Portions were generous, choices good and catered for the fussiest of our party. My “winter mess” desert was also delicious. As we left my Mum said “well, we’d definitely treat you to lunch here again” - we were all delighted. Thanks to all!!

Kate, Rob and the team of absolute legends at The Portland Arms really delivered the goods and made my mum feel safe and comfortable ordering a delicious roast without any fear. The portions are amazing... the meat is lean and really good quality... veg cooked to perfection. All this with and a buzzing friendly atmosphere to boot - this lively local is my absolute favourite.

I used to like this pub. It was friendly and relaxed. But today it was a full on sports pub, which was a shame, but I guess pubs have to do what they can to get the punters. Trouble was, we went and sat in the garden as far away from any of the MANY speakers as we could so we didn't have to listen to the TV. There were about 8 people in the garden, just chatting quietly in pairs. We ordered food, then BAM another telly comes on right behind us full blast blaring out the commentary. We asked for it to be turned down, but the staff serving said the guy behind the bar said "no". So we went and took it up with him. He wasn't particularly friendly / helpful about it, but turned it off (no one outside was watching it) but insisted on blasting out 70s disco music instead. Couldn't possibly just leave people to chat quietly. Won't be going back. Credit where it's due though, the frickles were excellent, so if you like deep fried gherkins and really loud football, this is your place.

We walked here after a disappointing experience in another place (we had to return our food). It restored our faith in food and people! Superb welcome as we approached the bar, the landlady recognised my sister from a visit several months ago - and even where she sat! Warm chat and efficient ordering, then we took a table in the beautiful beer garden out the back. It was a wonderfully mixed and friendly clientele. The food was superb (as was the wine!) Tender beef, perfect Yorkshire pudding and generous, tasty, well-cooked veg. We agreed that the cauliflower cheese was the best we could remember. The service was impeccable, even getting our wine topped up - when does that happen with pub food? We spent a lovely afternoon amongst really nice people, couples, friends and families of all ages. We will definitely be back and hope to hold our summer family celebrations there too. Additionally we noticed how well the staff spoke to one another. It seems a happy workforce 💛 Highly recommended.

They create a very good atmosphere with the decoration and the music. Extremely obliging staff, it's a pleasure to be served. Nice food, except that it is far too salty.

This used to be a family friendly welcoming pub, not now. We went there with young children and were made to feel unwelcome. Our children were well behaved and supervised throughout. They are young though and wanted to have a walk around the pub (non busy, Saturday afternoon and had an adult with them throughout) and we were asked by the landlady in no uncertain terms to keep our children at the table. Very much seen and not heard - in quite a rude way. It's a shame as families used to be welcome, but unfortunately not now. Avoid if you have children - there are other local pubs that are much more family friendly.

Very grateful to have this pub on our doorstep. Staff are usually friendly and helpful, they offer a good range of beers and gins, plus the food (while not very changeable) is usually to a good standard, with vegan options.

Only had beer and nuts there, but it's a real oasis! Friendly and welcoming, I must go back and try the food.
