We just wanted a light lunch before the ferry journey. We ordered BBQ chicken wraps with salad. What we got was 2 very small curried chicken wraps with a garnish not a salad. Inedible for me as I don't eat curry, my partner ate both which was equivalent to a normal pub lunch wrap. At over £30.00 a total rip off. They have a monopoly as there is nowhere else to eat nearby.

Stopped in for lunch before our ferry. I enjoyed the dated decor - a blast from the past! Food was very poor for the price - Cullen skink was tasteless, scampi and chips was likely from frozen.

Another disappointing and not cheap meal on Islay. My companion's fish and chips were OK. My wild mushrooms on crusty bread was a large bowl of mixed but definitely not wild mushrooms that were almost entirely unseasoned and sitting on a slice of white sliced toast that was both a bit burnt and so soggy it was almost mush. The bar has tacky, 1970s style decor and feels badly in need of updating. Decent local beers and a good view of the harbour from the beer garden. Friendly staff and a well located pub if you're catching the ferry but not too much else to recommend. it.

This was the only place we could find food when we got off the ferry last week. The scallops were incredible and totally worth every penny. The langoustines were not tasty and were a disappointment. The hosts were super nice and friendly. I think we were early in the season so the place didn’t seem ready. The bathroom was smelly and the dining rooms were still being prepared. In retrospect we should have had dinner in the ferry or brought our own food / planned to spend the night in Bowmore.

Went to get burgers before the ferry was leaving - thought that this is better than the fish and chips at the ferry. Fries were decent, burger was dry and overcooked. Is it the lack of competition or ambition that leads to serving food of such bad quality? Toilets were filthy, the bar/restaurant area was not clean either.

We stopped in for lunch on the way to the ferry. Unfortunately other options on route were closed so only place left for us to eat. Went into the hotel/restaurant to be met by an unfriendly welcome and abruptly told it was easier for them if we ate in the bar. Ordered drinks despite feeling a complete nuisance, server behind the bar made us feel unwelcome throughout, seemed to have selective friendliness as pleasant to others (not all). The snug bar was dated, smelly and in need of a good clean. Weird 70’s memorabilia. Mens toilet in desperate need of a refit, women’s not so bad. Burgers were dry as the sole of your shoe, served on buns which were not brioche as advertised, served with a sad looking salad. Cullen skink was tasty. Fish and chips - the fish was dry, bony and tasteless in parts. Glad to get out of there. Would not recommend.

If cleanliness is important to you then avoid this hotel . Apart from being old and dated, it is extremely dirty and badly maintained with broken furniture, door handles that come off in your hand not to mention blocked shower drains in the two rooms that I tried. My bed was presented with dirty previously used sheets and a filthy mattress cover. The carpets in communal areas as well as in the bedroom were extremely dirty and my en-suite bathroom had mould around shower tray, basin, toilet and ceiling as well as extremely worn lino. Don’t be fooled by the pictures on the website as the reality is very very different if only I could share mine to prove. The cost is also extremely high simply because the hotel is convenient for the ferry port and without any other hotel close by.

Great food, we had the haddock and the scampi, cooked to perfection and served with a very unorthodox cut of chips, apple corer cut? Excellent homemade tartare sauce, I’m not usually a fan but I tried it, and scoffed the lot, quite exceptional. Washed it down with lager from the bar and a couple of drams. Be guided by the proprietor in all matters pertaining to malt whisky, she is a star and a fountain of valuable local knowledge. Locals are very friendly and can take ‘up for a laugh’ to the next level.

When we booked a table we were told that a coach party was staying so we could only eat in the bar, not the restaurant but went ahead. I wish we hadn't bothered. On arrival it wasn't helpful to find the bar was full of the members of said coach. No member of staff was around to advise. We were seated in another bar which I didn't find at all comfortable as the tables were too low to eat from. The reason for choosing the restaurant had been the advertised port to plate menu. Sadly they had no seafood; either the boat hadn't come in or the coach party had ordered langoustines, mussels, crab and scallops. We paid £9.00 for liver parfait, £7.00 for cullen skink, £15 for fish and chips and £12 for a burger. Had this been a restaurant with a sea view and attentive staff it might have been worth it. When a member of staff managed to break off from the party we paid and left. Disappointing visit.

Warm welcome and great food. Staying locally and wanted to eat locally. Was not disappointed. We were made to feel welcome (first name terms based on our booking). Although COVID restrictions were in place with screens between tables, it was still friendly. Lovely meals - hand-dived scallops as a starter and chicken pakora, followed by curry of the day (hubby said it was fab) and scampi and chips for the rest. Large portions, so remember this if you want pudding (which I would recommend too). Overall - lovely welcome, accommodating, and great (large portioned) food.

Stopped here for drinks before the ferry back to the mainland. I walked into snug bar to order a gin and was told I was in the wrong bar and should walk out the door, turn left and left again to the main bar. I would then be able to see the gins available. I did so - there was no-one else there. How bizarre though - surely the staff member knew the gins available! The interaction was frosty rather than welcoming. Having read the reviews, it looks like this is a recurring theme. Shame. They have a captive audience with ferry travellers so should try harder to be warm and welcoming

I had dinner here earlier this year, while I waited for my ferry back to the mainland. The food is cooked to order and is very, very good, and the portions are massive. I had the haddock, and struggled to finish it. The restaurant is part of the Port Askaig hotel, which sits at the ferry terminal, and is so full of character. The lounge bar/restaurant is heated by a log burner, and the 2 little westie dogs, Bonny and Rory (not sure if the spelling is correct) are so cute. I wouldn't look past this place for wholesome home cooked food whilst on the northern part of the island.

Tripadvisor is a bit confusing, as this restaurant is part of the hotel. There is also a 'snug' with four tables, and a bar. The restaurant was quiet on the night we went, me and my partner both had fish dishes. These were both good and the scallops were presented excellently. We actually got charged less than the menu stated. We went in the bar afterwards, this has a good atmosphere and lots of whiskys, beers on offer. This restaurant is rubbish. I never recommend it. When I visited it, it was just after a new chef joined it. I think it was true and didn't mind that it served nothing but a soup and sandwiches. What irritated me was that it took more than an hour to serve a soup and sandwiches without telling me any update. The restaurant was not crowded at all. There was only two other guest there. On top of that, they served the same soup and sandwiches to other guest who ordered after I did. I asked a member of staff why it took long time to serve even a soup and sandwiches and a staff answered that it was because the new chef was cooking the sandwiches carefully. How ridiculous. Then I got angry and shouted to them to cook asap and they served within 10 minutes. I am sure that they intentionally ignored my order and left me and my friend alone for more than an hour. This restaurant is nasty and rubbish. I wonder what excuse they could do if they would look at my comment.

Food is OK - cullen skink and pate were good starers; chicken curry was Ok as were (slightly undercooked) langoustines; steak pie was a little disappointing with a ,mushy lower layer of pastry and chunks of beef swimming in a thin and flavourless gravy/sauce. Young bar/waiting staff worked hard but the whole place seemed unprepared for a busy Saturday lunchtime.

Nowhere else to go if you are waiting for the ferry. Service was friendly and a fairly comprehensive menu. I had the skullen skink soup which was delicious, also had a sandwich which was very average.

We ate here tonight, in the pub rather than the restaurant, though the menu is the same. You might not think it from the atmosphere - it was very much a pub (people were playing darts, and the TV was on, as was the music), but the food was great. My wife and I both had the steak and ale pie, served with vegetables and chips, and flaky pastry. It was very tasty - the meat was very good (not fatty or chewy - good cuts of beef), as was the pastry.Simple pub food, but very, very well done.

Great place to eat while waiting for the ferry. We ate in the dog friendly bar (as we had 3 with us!) and ordered the cullen skink and pint of langoustine tails. Both were excellent value for money, good sized portions, hand cut chips, tasty and hearty food in friendly surroundings. Would definitely recommend this place.

Un bar fantastique et une ambiance digne d'un autre monde... Excellent accueil et grand moment de plaisirs. A ne pas louper

Nice atmosphere, but I would urge the staff to handle the post-ferry-arrival rush better (there were clear, audible issues between the staff due to lots of customers arriving - hardly a surprise as the ferry schedule is a known event). However a lovely but pricey meal.

Situated right off the ferry terminal, the Port Askaig restaurant may not look like much but the seafood is excellent. There is also a bar which is, of course, well stocked with whisky.

After a day out on Jura, I decided we would have an evening meal here having checked out the menu and prices a couple of days before. On a small island, you would expect good food to be cheap but reasonable. As a family, we had various meals. Haggis, neeps & tatties was served with a whisky sauce which my 16 yr son had and enjoyed, I can verify it was good! My wife and I had fish and chips which was deliciously fresh and batter was just right. My daughter had a chicken fillet braised in honey which she really enjoyed and her boyfriend had a proper burger with chips which filled him up too! Much better value than a meal we had elsewhere on Islay earlier in the week. We had our meal in the 'Snug Bar' but they also have another cosy little bar plus a restaurant. Islay Ales too which taste good, I would recommend this place to anyone!

After a day trip to Colonsay we stopped here for an evening meal and had a very pleasant experience. We had stopped off for a drink on the Monday after spending the day on Jura and found the place really busy. On the Tuesday we visited Caol Isla and Bhunahabhain and stopped off for another drink only to find it really quiet and were pleasantly surprised to get a table in the gardens with their utterly gorgeous view of Jura.So on the next day coming back from a day trip to Colonsay we decided to eat there and we were not disappointed. Again the place was jumping with people waiting for the later Jura ferry and some of them were wondering if they would have time to eat before the fery left but they were told yes and I can guarantee that they were all fed before they left.We wondered if this might delay our meals but not in the slightest. We were served without an excess wait and whilst only having the fish and chips we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The food is excellent, the view from the gardens is simply to die for. Do not pass this place by.

We were on our way home from Islay and needed a meal before getting on the ferry. We all had the main course Cullen Skink and what a good decision that was! Best I have tasted in a while. The bar was cosy, the landlady and staff friendly, so all in all a lovely end to our time on Islay.

We stopped here on a cold and very windy day. Cafe is a bit small, but the cakes are scrumptious and the hot chocolate was perfectly chocolatey, delicious and warming which was just what was needed. Coffee and tea also was great. The two ladies who run the cafe are lovely and bake some really delicious treats. They have a small shop too full of pretty stuff. Will definitely be coming back here next time I'm in Inveraray.

Such a beautiful location with lovely staff but unfortunately the worst meal ever. If a chef cannot make macaroni then it's a big no from us. Pasta and water would have been more apt. Feel sorry for the waitresses working there having to serve such bland inedible food. We are not complainers but felt the need to. The waitresses were so lovely and engaging but even they could not make up for the inedible food. Will definitely not return

Ordered a guinness it was terrible tasted sour reported it. Pipes need cleaned The trainee Barmaid maggie wasnt interested charged me another pint when i asked for stella. You cant pay for food, and drinks all at once as she gets confused if you put 3 pints behind the bar. To much for her .Her attitude stinks when i says i will pay now. No go to the cash machine.. I wont be back i was a paying customer her attitude is shocking

Staff more interested in playing darts than serving customers. The food was average, dont waste your time and money here, there are plenty of outlets to choose from that will welcome your custom
