Beyond exceptional. My only regret is having to leave. Had the tasting menu. The food, presentation, service, views and dining room were a sensory delight I've not felt in other restaurants. I was worried it would be a bit stuffy or I wouldn't be smart enough but other diners were in jeans so wear what you want. Service was friendly and unpretentious.

£220 a head in a restaurant with no table cloths. Seating okay but they should be more comfortable for tasting menus. Wines spot on. Lovely staff. Wife enjoyed it. I wouldnt recommend to others. Better restaurants at better price in the town. Bring back table cloths!!!

Food was generally of a high standard, however the service was extremely slow and the kitchen could not handle an almost full house. As a result, multiple courses arrived late and some had to be sent back as were cold. Some tables had even left during the sitting. Therefore took about five hours to able to do all the courses. Edit: restaurant said would contact me days ago, but have not yet. Very disappointed.

This iconic 95 year old restaurant is amazing! I am so sad it is closing! Ate there Friday night. It was the best seven course tasting I have ever had. I am a vegetarian so usually a tasting menu is terrible for me. Usually chefs throw it together for vegetarians. Not here. My tasting was just as perfectly planned and designed as my meat eating friend’s was. The food was incredible. The service impeccable. The atmosphere was just beautiful. An old world gem. Unfortunately now closing for probably another dumb trendy fusion thing. This is a big loss for the Caledonian. This was an experience I will never forget.

This was our first visit to The Pompadour restaurant located in the Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian, as it is known to long time Edinburgh residents. The restaurant is centrally located at the west end of Princes Street. We went with another couple and had the tasting menu with wine pairings. At the outset we had a glass of champagne and canapés in the kitchen where we met head chef Daniel Ashmore. Daniel was very welcoming and we had a nice chat about his background and the ingredients in the canapés. The dining room is very spacious and perhaps reflects its location as a hotel dining room rather than as a stand alone destination. A picture of our menu is below together with some of the courses. Service was very good with the wait staff and sommelier providing great descriptions of what we were eating and drinking. All of the food was very tasty and was for the most part classically prepared. Particular highlights were the Lindisfarne Oyster, the tartare halibut and the venison loin. Although it does not have a Michelin Star it is certainly on a par with those in Edinburgh that do. Recommended for special occasions.

After our lovely time in Peacock Alley we headed up to Pompadour for a truly tasting experience! We decided to go for the tasting menu and I had the vegetarian one as I'm extremely difficult to please! All of the dishes were excellent but some were really amazing! Some of the best food the family had ever tasted (they had the normal tasting menu) was the comments after each course. My daughter is gluten and lactose intolerant and the chefs went out of there way to ensure she could enjoy the tasting menu as much as we did. Gwen looked after us and did the paired wines. Gwen was very knowledgable, always happy to receive feedback on the wines and with such a great personality, she made our night. Guilia was also extremely helpful and friendly. Than we had the pea bevaroise , a halibut tartare and the veals sweatbread. The flavours the textures and presentations are just superb. Followed by the wine menu is a complete story. Loved the cod and the bees variation as well, make sure you don’t miss the cheese plate with the Port wine and ask for an extra pickled walnut. Never forget the taste. The blackberry souffle is super light and the ice cream is sharp. I don’t really know which was better, the pistacchios dessert or the last dish. Food was exquisite. We went with an itison offer which included a bottle to share. The sommelier opened the bottle in front of us, put the nearly full bottle in an ice bucket , then we had to wait a long time to get a refill which came from another bottle. After three very slim topups, we were told the bottle was finished... through the evening we were made to feel third class citizens:staff knew we were on itison offer. At one point a loud table of six had three staff around them to the detriment of the other tables in the room. Staff were embarrassingly disjointed with the sommelier clearing tables etc. Five staff in the restaurant for around twenty-five clients should create a much better service. With experience in this industry it was very disappointing and I did not realise that the bottle to share would be to share with other tables...

We thoroughly enjoyed it. It was expensive but worth it. The food was excellent, the ambience and decor of the restaurant outstanding and the waiting staff really attentive without being overly fussy. We had the secret tasting menu with accompanying wine. Each dish was better than the last and was accompanied by some really unusual wines. Three and a half hours of food and wine heaven. My only slight disappointment was that I made a schoolboy error when paying the bill. I only realised afterwards that the bill included a service charge and, so at the time, left a fairly obvious generous tip. I might have expected the waitress to confirm that I wanted to leave a tip. Nevertheless, a schoolboy error and it won’t stop us from going back. In fact planning on taking our Gourmet Club buddies there.

Four of us went for lunch last Sunday, using a 5 p.m. voucher I had bought in January. We had the 3 course market menu and substituted our Bloody Mary’s with Ginger Beers. Were greeted very nicely at the Reception desk. Pleasant service at a relaxed measured pace. The food was absolutely faultless. Two amuse-Boucher to start. I had a lovely chicken terrine to start followed by delicious beef. My Partner had cod and raved about the cabbage sauce. Topped off by a superb blood orange parfait. The restaurant was not busy, which was a shame as it deserved to be full. At 34.50 a head (with the voucher we paid less) this must be Edinburgh’s best value meal. Only slight gripe, the restaurant got cold at the end of our meal-we checked the radiator and it was on, but it was freezing outside.I unreservedly recommend this as a very special treat at a ( for these days) fairly ordinary price.

Can not fault the food quality coupled with a nice wine list makes this an great proposition. However the feel is a bit stuffy and on our night (Wednesday) pretty lifeless. Now it was an early booking 6:30 and admittedly humpday but it just felt like there was no soul to the place. Having said that food excellent - so would go back but maybe next time a bit later in the evening and the week.

Visited for the first time in six months, they have started a new four course or eight course tasting menu, I chose the 4 course menu. The food was absolutely amazing, the service was exemplary and so was the wine! As an extra course at the end we chose the cheese, which was absolutely delicious and very good quality. I thoroughly recommend the Pompadour , it should be much higher up the ratings as it is definitely one of the best restaurants in Edinburgh.

On the evening of Friday 15th February I had the most disappointing dining experience I can remember. I should mention that a few months previously, in April, we had an excellent experience and it was the memory of that which led me her again in February when my mother wanted to treat me for my birthday. However...

We dined here on a 5 course taster menu with matching wines. This isn’t the first time, but I can’t say service has improved since the last.

Booked for my Birthday and what can I say but Fantastic... josh and the staff worked hard to make sure the evening is one to remember. The food is without fault and busting with flavour. The wines complement each course. Again Fantatic and thank you.

We had a lovely 5 course tasting menu and accommodated the fact that I am not a fish lover, which was thoughtful. Some very interesting pairing wines to go with each course, Always love the decor and ambiance, so much so that I will return with my husband next week. Thank you to Joshua and Lees attentive service for making this a very pleasant evening. I must say the desert in particular, was excellent.

Nunca me he sentido tan decepcionado después de esperar nuestro tiempo aquí.

I’ve eaten in several Michelin starred restaurants, and sadly this was disappointing. Firstly, it was incredibly dark inside. Fortunately we had a window table and the outside Christmas lights offered some light. Other than that there was a covered tea light on the table, one shouldn’t be reading the menu by torch light, and we were not the only ones. We chose the a la Carte menu as the choice looked very good. There was a good wine list to choose from, and our choice was delicious, congratulations to the very knowledgeable Sommelier. When the food arrived, it was well presented. The starters were in no way special and I found my main course tasteless and left it. The staff were attentive and we were not charged for the main course. Again dessert was okay, not memorable. The staff were fine, the ambience less so. We were simply disappointed.

Had a truly stunning meal at the Pompadour. The food, presentation and taste was simply fantastic. The staff were lovely, great service without being pretentious. Highlight for me was the Halibut tartare, probably one if the nicest starters I have ever tasted. My partners monkfish and Oxtail ragu was also up there with one of the best. Still have a list of restuarants id like to visit in Edinburgh but would go back to the Pompadour in a minute.

This was by far the most amazing dining experience I have ever experienced. Staff, surroundings and ambience were just perfect. We had the seafood tasting menu which was unbelievable! We had thought of having the wine pairing also but pleased we didn't as there seems to be a lot of wine to get through! Can not fault the place at all. Can't wait to return.

The woman did not even explain what is it that came with the meal, which was also not explained in any signage. A small coffee and snack we wanted turned out to be 38 pounds and the woman was VERY rude about us being confused and blamed it all on us for “telling her we wanted the salad”. Horrible, rude service. Would not recommend for a snack. Plus, burnt quiche.

Got the scallops starter, which was nice but nothing special for the price. We had to wait at least 20-25 minutes for our main mussels to come as they forgot about it. Which was fine as they didn't charge for the bread. Probably, they were in a hurry when making our mains as we felt it was not a proper full portion of mussels , we were a bit disappointed, actually. We would have not been annoyed by the described situation, but after asking for the bill, they put a 10%service charge on. I'm normally OK with service charge but after watching the most demoralised staff I've seen in a while for more than 2 hours and forgetting our mains we felt like it's a bit cheeky to put that SC on. Food was OK but nothing special, you'd probably get this food for cheaper and with better service somewhere else in town. We will not be rushed to be back.
