The food was banging, fresh and filling portions, and the price was spot on. The landlady has a really good vibe and makes you feel welcome. Environment is clean, fresh and spacious. Give it ago, as I understand she has taken the pub on recently

Went to the poacher at 6.30pm to meet friends before going on to eat elsewhere. The bar staff consisted of two quite young girls. I asked for a small coke and a virgin mary. I was informed that they didn’t do cocktails. I explained that it was just a tomato juice with Worcester sauce and a drop of tobacco and she just looked blankly at me. She eventually managed to find a bottle of tomato juice and charged me just under £8.00. I asked her if that was the correct price as there was no alcohol and she asked me if I lived in Portishead. I replied yes and she asked if I head heard about the cost of living. We sat down and our friends arrived. The table was so sticky we could not put our hands on it and the gents smelt terrible. We have lived here for 23 years and used this pub often but never, ever again.

Had our first evening meal here this evening - we drop in for coffee fairly often - and thoroughly enjoyed it. The Caribbean food (red "pea" soup; jerk chicken wings with tropical slaw; goat curry with rice, peas and fried plantain; banana ice-cream with ginger bread and rum sauce, and finally "chahklit" tea. Plus a glass of Pinot Grigio, one of Merlot, and one of rum punch. All the food was beautifully cooked and full of flavour, and the service was good. At £35 a head there were no complaints! We look forward to the Thai evening, I think on June 10th.

At a little after 6:00 PM we were the only people in the pub, that should have rang the alarm bells. Greeted by a very pleasant lady who took orders for food and drinks. Choice of food very limited and narrow range, e.g Specials board had two rice dishes out of four in total. My burger was overcooked and the bun was dry. It contained very little salad, Chips were OK but again very dry. My wife's Rabbit with Papardelle was bland and could have been any white meat. Will not be returning

Ate at the Poacher again this evening and had fabulous food. We chose steak burger and ham, egg & chips from main menu and seafood red thai curry with noodles and katsu chicken curry with green vegetables from the new Wednesday Curry Night menu (£13 for curry & drink of your choice - excellent value). All four dishes were of a high standard & delicious. Real ales very good, Theakstons blonde & Exmoor Stag, and the Merlot is very nice too! Greeted with a friendly welcome & excellent service from Ethan. Recommend the Poacher, the chef knows good food and the daily specials are always more interesting than usual pub grub - this is restaurant quality food with the friendliness of the Poacher team.

Visited the Poacher for lunch with a friend since refurb. Poor non cooked lunch choice so ordered soup. We then ordered a dessert from limited choice and the crumble tart was not available. So both of us ordered what we thought was crumble - not. Topping was scattered on the plate and the poached pair stood by the side complete wth core and pips , totally not what we describe or expect when ordering pear crumble. Portions were small and very expensive. The Poacher is trying to be something that locals aren't expecting. No intention to revisit

I visited The Poacher for Sunday lunch a month ago and would definitely have recommended it. I returned today and although I could not fault the food the whole experience was not so good. Previously the order was taken at the table but today food was ordered at a very busy bar. Three starters were ordered but only two arrived however they were very quick in putting this right. We wanted the roast beef which I think was the most popular option, it was sold out. I think as we had booked the demand should have been anticipated but although the staff tried their best they could not cope with the number of customers. I would not go back in a hurry.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

Recently refurbished there are definite good points and a couple of bad. The good; the quality and value of the food, the enthusiasm of the staff and the potential to be a very popular watering hole on the high street. In particular the steaks and pork belly mains and the pigeon starter were all cooked and presented well and were very tasty. The drinks offerings were also good. Wines and spirits were tested. And so to the gripes. We had a table booked in a bay window in the bar area but felt the restaurant area would be better as there was, at the time of arrival, a rather loud crowd in the bar. However, we all felt the large restaurant area was overly lit, and lacked a conducive atmosphere for eating and gentle chat, there was a further large party there. By this time the bar party had left and we returned to that area and sat on their table which was much better in terms of welcome and ambience. So all in all the gripes are to do with probable continual trial and error on the part of the owners to get the various areas working to their best. That aside well done to you. Keep tweaking the ambience, quiet cosy eating areas are always very welcome.

Our boys' bands had been booked for their Christmas gig by the previous management, and new owners honoured the booking. What an improvement! The bar looks a lot bigger, and putting the band in the restaurant is so much better than at one end of the bar. We thought we might try a meal there before the gig as it looked so much nicer. Not disappointed. Curried goat, "guest ale" battered fish and chips. Perfectly cooked and just the right size - we cleared our plates. Good selection of beer too. We'll go again.

The pipes have been renewed and the beer/alses taste great with a wide range of choice. The wine selection is good and reasonably priced. Had Sunday roast there today and the beef was beautifully pink and melt in the mouth (I believe all/most of the meats are sourced from the fantastic Butchers directly opposite the pub). The menu came and there was lots of lovely things to choose from and when the food came it was really good and the portions were large so more than worth the money. We will definitely be back and I’m sure that it is going to be very successful under the new owners. Good to see a local pub getting back on its feet. Keep it up guys and you will do well for sure. This pub has recently been refurbished to a very high standard. We went for an evening meal last Monday and were very impressed with the decor, the friendliness of the staff and the quality of the food. The menu is not vast but what there is should be enough for any taste, it was beautifully cooked, well presented, and nothing was too much trouble when we asked to change items on the plate for substitutes. The rose wine was lovely at a reasonable price and the beers were a good selection. If we lived closer this would undoubtedly become a regular "watering hole". I believe it has become popular since it reopened three weeks ago and I hope this venture for the new owners is a success.

This was a last minute booking and would not have been a natural first choice. The accommodation was very smal but clean. It lacked the basics one would normally find even in similar standard premises( no hairdryer, bedside tables or headboard). The bed was extremely uncomfortable and the mattesss so old that the springs creaked every time we moved. The plumbing was also a disturbance and clearly needs attention. The actual pub is shabby and unloved. The bar staff were pleasant enough, although elected to close early and thus asked us to leave, not very professional. All in all, whether looking to board, or just simply enjoy a drink, I would avoid this establishment I’m afraid.

A shame for such a lovely old pub. We expected more. After going past the classic tidy pubs such as Hall and Wood House and the Lounge bar, we ended up at the nightmare that is the Poacher. It's hay day long gone, the staff were for want of  a better word none customer service friendly boardering on none acceptable. Not recognising clientele that were bending over backwards to forgive the bad name to see what the pub really offers only to be greated with agressive hostile staff and manahement. The pub has a negative atmosphere to be blunt. The customer service is none existent and they house a rough clientelle. Going there in a group to try and overcome this, didn't work! Our gentryfied group felt very unwelcome. And to be abruptly shown the door at the end of the evening only added to our anger. Await a refit and change of management and hope the property owners know what gem is lie in wait of a better future (We hope).

Called here for lunch and we were all (including the dog) made very welcome. Food was home cooked, piping hot and quickly served. A really lovely, relaxed and warm atmosphere with super friendly staff. On our way home we called in for a full English cooked beautifully by a very happy chef.

Fancied a beer in an olde world themed pub. On the outside this did not disappoint. Again on entering still themed and cosy.Ordered food, fish in ale batter.Well resent action was fine, however, the fish was what could be best described as pulp in batter. The mushy peas you could slice. Not impressed. The Guinness was well kept mind 3.85 a little on the expensive side. What was a surprise was the floor show. Two young bucks locking horns the barman intervened in fairness and mentioned I was having a meal to which they both apologised.Far to say I won't be visiting again.

We called in for a quick pint with friends on a visit to Portishead. The staff were welcoming and friendly, the beers were great, some nice ciders and cask ales. (Doom baron tap - what more do you need?!)We ended up in the pub all afternoon and had a bar snack while we were there, plenty of choice, nicely presented and very tasty. The menu board for main meals looked good with plenty of good reasonably priced dishes. Well recommended.

I chose the chicken bacon rib stack . The small chicken breast was very dry - overcooked ? ,the promised " half a rack of ribs " consisted of 4 mini ribs which were an improvement on the chicken but alongside of the oven chips the meal represented a poor return for £10.95 . Worse was to come , my partner ordered Fish in ale batter . Upon slicing into it the fish was found to be cold , under cooked and of a strange consistency . On sending it back we were told " it's the type of fish , it's Bassa , you probably expected cod - which is firm ........" No we expected a decent meal !!The replacement fish appeared and was edible , just about acceptable but certainly a long way off what could be bought in any local fish and chip shop . The quality of food does not live up to the promise

I had a Groupon deal to use. You had to book by email, which meant waiting for replies. In the end I telephoned, and was told I could just come in any time during the day and use my voucher. We decided to go on a Tuesday at 8pm. On arrival, we were told as nobody had been ordering food during the evening, they had stopped serving! We then decided to go the next day at lunch time. We ordered our food, and I waited for my coffee to be made. While waiting, the chef/cook came out and decided to have a cigarette break. The young man serving me, told him there were 2 meals to be made. He said " I don't care, I've been here 3 hours and I'm having a break". I guessed we would be waiting a little while for our food.We had ordered ham and chips with free range "eggs", of which there was just the one well done egg. I had the Poachers chicken, but on arrival there were no peas! After we'd eaten, the server asked how our meal was, and I mentioned about the missing "green stuff". She said I should have mentioned it, but to be honest, I don't think I should have to remind them what they have to put on the plate! On a positive note, the chicken was really nice!

We stopped for lunch on a very wet afternoon and upon entering the pub my first instinct was to leave immediately. Nothing about the pub was appealing however we had limited time so stayed. We sat in the glass Function Room which was freezing cold and looked out on the car park. We had to find our own menus which were filthy, as was the tabletop. We felt we would be safe with soup. It was bland and the baguettes which accompanied it were burned. My husband also had a burger which was uninteresting although it did have a lot of meat. The chips were barely warm. The service was extremely slow however the server was friendly. The floor in the women's toilet was in need of washing. I will spare the reader the details. We will never return. From now on I will listen to my instincts.

Just stayed at the Poacher in one of the new rooms they have converted, good breakfast and great value evening meal. This pub offers good traditional pub food, range of real ales in a traditional pub environment all the staff were good, the pub was full of mainly locals drinking and eating. Room had all the essentials I needed. I will be back on a regular basis as I visit family and friends locally.

Had a busy weekend and decided to pop in. £7.95 each and an extra £2 for dessert. Bought tokens for both for each of us. Pyb was nice and service was great. To ne honest we wish we had skipped dessert.... We had so much food on the main course, they even gave us a bit of each meat. Great place and will return.

Our friends suggested we try The Poacher for lunch with them last Thursday none of us had been before and thought it would be a change. Our friend rang the day before to reserve a table for 1pm. We arrived to find no table ready so the man behind the bar told a girl working to set us a table there was no apology that it hadn't been done ready for us. We got some drinks and found the table. We looked at the menu my friend is vegetarian there was nothing on the menu she could eat. I suggested she went to the bar to ask if there was a specials board or what vegetarian meals they did. They laughed at her said no they didn't do vegetarian food and that anyway they were not taking food orders anyway as they were too busy. There were only 3 other tables in use one was a Christmas meal even though the menu said Christmas meals didn't start until the following week in any case there were only 6 people on that table. We couldn't believe it why did they take our reservation if we couldn't have food. We finished our drinks paid and left no one asked us why. We went from there toThe Windmill where we had a lovely meal, in a nice atmosphere. We will not be trying The Poacher again in a hurry.

We found Sunday roast at the Poacher a pleasant surprise, good honest down to earth Sunday lunch with a nice warm welcome. The pub isn't a glossy chain premise or pretending to be something it isn't. What you see is what you get which suited us fine. Huge array of veg and four meats. Very nice service too! Lovely.

(eyes up breakfast menu, and desserts. Enjoyed my pot of tea - a rarity in pubs these days, plus extra hot water, fresh milk, and brought to table. Perfect.

My husband and I went to The Poacher last Saturday lunchtime using a Groupon voucher. We most certainly were not disappointed. The staff were friendly and polite, the bar / restaurant and loo's all clean and the food was superb !We had the 10oz Rib-eye steak which was served piping hot along with generous portions of chips, onion rings etc. So good I'm buying another voucher and really looking forward to going back, although I have to say that the rest of the menue looked pretty tempting and (if we lived closer) could see us popping in for regular meals so will certainly try something else from the menu ( or a yummy pud) another time. Thanks to you all and look forward to seeing you again soon !

Our first visit to this pub & wouldn't be in a great hurry to return. We wanted the carvery but were told a large group was coming in so it wasn't available to us (although we left at 14:30 & no one had arrived & the carvery was shut down!). We had to order from the main menu - OK I suppose, but could have been better and was a tad overpriced.Didn't find the staff welcoming or particularly helpful.

First time at this Pub which is located on Portishead high street with a good size car park. On Wednesday they offer a carvey at £5.95 but unfortunately when we arrived at lunchtime at 1300, we were told that due to demand they could not offer the carvey, surprising so early and when there was still plenty of seating available and they advertise this as a carvey day. As a result we ordered from the main menu. I was the only one that ordered steak and ale pie with chips and peas £8+ But unfortunately this did not arrive until everyone else had finised their meals! Which I consider unexceptable and only arrived after reminding them twice that I was still waiting. The meal itself was quite good, the meat was tender and the portion size generous but the overall experience of waiting 45 minutes and eating after everyone else had finished made it a not very happy experience. When you consider the number of other pubs etc in the area which provide equally as good food at similar prices but with better service, there is little to recommend a repeat visit.

They advertise a full English on a board outside. When we were there the chef was off sick and someone else was trying to cook. I asked for a poached egg and after trying for 10 minutes to make one he gave up. The rest of the food was buffet style and kept hot under lamps. Not very nice but quite cheap.

Service was good - only we got served by about four different people - including the chef, which muddled the order up. The only option for vegetarians was vegetarian lasagne with amaretto sauce (nope, you read that right). I was a bit scared to order that but help was at hand as the chef came by and said would I prefer (what I thought was) green curry. No, I heard that wrong. It was CREAM curry - an odd selection of vegetables (chick peas, potatoes, peas, mushrooms) in what tasted like chillied cream. It was intriguing for a couple of mouthfulls. No apparent dessert. Carnivore husband had cheese covered chicken. Mwah. First beer was cloudy, but the barman didn't know about beers. It was a memorable evening.

Went here for the Carvery yesterday and what a lovely roast dinner, for me the roast potatoes were done to perfection with a dark colour and crispy bits and the veg was not overcooked. The staff were very friendly and helpful and I would definitely have a meal here again. Yes the décor could do with some attention.

Booked on a groupon deal so we didn't have much to lose. The carvery was excellent, three meats and the chef gave us loads of it. The vegetables were lovely, leeks in a sauce, cauliflower cheese, lovely crisp roast potatoes and parsnips, carrots and peas and lashings of gravy. And because I couldn't eat it all they let me have a takeaway! plenty of meat for Monday lunch! The meal was in the conservatory which was ok, plenty of room and light and airy.good staff and service.Thank you!
