Visited the Plough with family celebrating a 60th birthday. I will say the service was very good, extremely helpful staff but the menu selection is very average with not a great deal of choice. I went for the burger which was ok, have tasted better in other gastro pubs. I expected much more choice hence the 3 star rating. I suggest you make your own opinion but I won’t be rushing back

Another fabulous meal at The Plough last night, still the ‘go to place’ around town for a good night out. We had steak and cod; both dishes were cooked to perfection and the service was as sharp as ever. Keep up the good work guys. Jon Mann

We would have given 4 star but when we pre booked we weren’t aware that we would not be seated in the main dining area but in an outside extension with bench seating. We would not have been pleased if it was heavy rain on the sliding roof. It certainly deserves 5 star rating for cleanliness and the staff were very accommodating, although we were initially given 2 different menus. We would suggest the duck spring rolls, although tasty were not made onsite, The other 2 courses were obviously cooked and presented by a passionate chief. If we booked again for an evening meal it would have to be in the main restaurant.

We went for Sunday lunch today. On a fairly hot day it was nice to be able to sit outside on a shady table. All the staff were excellent, very friendly and helpful. There were a good number of choices on the menu. We went for sticky beef and mussels to start, both sizeable portions and lovely. Roast beef and roast chicken for mains, plenty of it and delicious. Sticky toffee pudding ( the best I’ve ever had) and the pineapple and ice cream which was equally delicious. We can highly recommend The Plough and will definitely be going again.

We visited on Mother’s Day with family. We were aware of the set 3 corse menu £60 pp as it was Mothers Day. This did seem pricy but that’s not a problem if the food is really good. We did not realise the children’s menu was an eye watering £30 per child! This was again a set 3 corse menu. I’ve never known children to eat 3 corses. The starters was a bizarre choice for children - Duck spring rolls (these were on the adults menu and were quite spicy), Calamari or a mini loaf of bread! Our children as well as every other table with children around us questioned if they could just have 2 corses, when we were told no, we ordered the bread then had to tell the children not to eat most of it because if they ate a loaf of bread they would not eat their main meal. We had 3 children with us, so we ended up paying £90 for 3x small plates of chicken nuggets and chips and 3 small bowls of ice cream!!! Most of the adults food was ok. Nothing really great, nothing terrible. The spring roll starter was very big, two large spring rolls that had gone a bit soggy maybe due to being pre prepared in order to fit in lots of covers? The roast beef was very tasty, but the roast potatoes were just cooked enough (could have done with longer as they were not fluffy inside) and were not at all crispy on the outside. The veg was very bog standard steamed broccoli, sliced carrot and peas, no frills. We asked for extra gravy, we had to ask for this twice before the waiter then approached our table to check that it had been delivered to our table - it had not. The extra gravy arrived when we had almost finished the meal. Desert was the best corse, sticky toffee pudding was very good. The trio of deserts was good although all of the churros were quite over cooked so they were actually hard to bite into. Our main waiter was very good. Very attentive, sense of humour and professional. For the amount of money we paid, I’d expect a good starter, very good fluffy/crispy roast potatoes and more interesting veg - maybe a good cauliflower cheese, veg cooked with herbs and seasoning etc and as the extra gravy was ordered at the same time as ordering the meal for it to arrive with the meal. I realise it was a busy day but the restaurant has charged a lot of money to account for this so mistakes and quality of food should not slip. As for the children’s meals that felt quite greedy. Based on this unfortunately I would not recommend the Plough.

A very poor welcome from an unsmiling barman/waiter. My brother and I were not dining and, despite six or more empty tables, we were told we could only sit on stools at the bar. I offered that we could sit at a table and if other people came in we'd vacate. This, apparently, is "against company policy". We left with our drinks unfinished. I'll just end by saying that a pint of beer and a Coke were £10.60. All in all, a dreadful experience. We then went to The Rose in Shenfield where there was a friendly welcome and the atmosphere was warm and lovely.

I found this pub by reading Trip Advisor reviews. The pub had obviously been recently refurbished and was very modern inside and a little sterile taking away any real ambiance. The menu was very good, but took a little longer to arrive than I would have expected., but the quality of service was good. The meals were reasonable but not great, and didn’t live up to the reviews I had read. Don’t get me wrong, they were ok, but just not as good as I expected for the price paid. The cost of the drinks was frankly outrageous, which is why I have given this a three star review and not a four star. I also didn’t like the fact they added a 10% service charge at lunchtime making the entire experience significantly overpriced. Don’t let this review put you off going, but check the price of the drinks before you order.

So here’s a shout out to a local business, The Plough at Mountnessing. A table for four, great playlist on the system (amazing how many hospitality businesses never read the room and just put ‘anything’ on - yet this is another crucial area of the experience). The food… brilliantly presented and cooked to perfection (even room for desert, which is a rarity for me). Service from the staff amazing, just right… no rushing, but attentive when required. As someone who has worked in hospitality and trained in service levels, this one ticked every box! 👏🏼👏🏼 If you’ve never visited, certainly one to put on the wish list… I’ll be back soon.

Lunched with a group of friends from the city of London. Large roadside pub, during our Wednesday visit was very nearly empty. As it was a warm day, we opted to sit in the covered area outside. The service was rather slow for both our drinks and the food. The food was ok, but it mystifies me why restaurants serve a sweet brioche bun with a savoury burger inside. I would choose something different next time.

Fantastic night at the Plough following recent renovations. The new decor is smart and stylish, and a great venue for a special occasion. Love the new menu, some of the favourite original dishes still remain with some exciting new choices including excellent veggie options. The duck spring roll was soooo delicious, and the fish and chips was the very best I've had in a long long time. The roast is also superb, accompanied by 5* roast potatoes. As always the service is excellent. We've been visiting the Plough for many years and the food has always been consistently good and always piping hot! Hi Reviewers,Well where do I start, not going to beat around the bush, we have been in the catering sector for14 years so there is a degree ofexpertise there. We ordered our main after a short break from our starters, the staff we’re at best late teens early twenties, pleasant enough but having had staff in my, Restaurants, Bars, Cafes & Juice Bars you need an experienced team member to gel the operation and keep the service balanced. Now to the point, we ordered the Lamb roast lovely I thought, wellcouldn’t be further from the truth, the lamb was so tough & stringy I could not eat it if I had crocodiles teeth, so I called the young waiter/ waitresses over to take the dish away, my brother in law did at least take the plunge and have ago but he would have still been chewing it on the walk home.My brother in law just ask the lamb to be replaced with chicken so that he could at least eat something.I, though was complete put off and could not eat now so declined they replacement option. My husband and brother in law finished there dinners as quick as poss we then ask for the bill which I might add was rather Chad Valley wrote on 70s waiter pad, faulty towers style. My husband then on the way out as we waited outside calmly approached the manager who was hiding in the shadows for the duration of the meal.He expressed his disappointment, but did this professionally and without a scene. He told the manager he was in the Catering sector, he told him he made a grave error in not offering to redeem himself by inviting us back for another main FOC to appease the situation. To his amazement the manger proceeded to tell him he had done 80 covers with no complaints, my husband replied with actually 78 with no complaints nowHe then told him you was giving a fair chance to rectify the poor service which you have declined, Iwish you luck in the future with your customers who have yet to trial your fayre and walked away.Hopefully he will reflect on the error of his ways and future customers will not suffer the same fate.

Can't comment on the food as our family including my severely disabled dad were told to leave after an utterly pointless argument with the waiter. In all my time going to restaurants I've never come across a waiter so discourteous, dishonest and willing to argue with customers. I won't publicly name him here but he knows who he is. I'll call him "the waiter". I called in the morning to reserve a table outside for the afternoon for 6 people and dog. Hot summer's day, 32 degrees and sunny - just bear that in mind. The waiter informed me that they do not reserve outside tables, but that we could just turn up and take what's available. When we arrived there were 3 vacant tables, 2 in the shade, and one with disappearing shade that would have left half the table in the sun during the meal. Far from taking what's available, the waiter offered us the table with partial shade. I asked why we couldn't have one of the other tables, and he said these were already reserved. Pointing out this contradicted with what he told me over the phone, the waiter quickly moved the goalposts: apparently you can reserve outside tables, but we needed to have done this at some unspecified time in advance. I kept my counsel and politely asked if the table could at least be moved a little so that we'd spend less time in the sun. The waiter replied "no, the table can't be moved". Ok, it must be bolted down I thought. I then go back and consult the family and we agree seating arrangements. Me and the wife would take the sun. On arriving at the table, I could see it was an easily moveable lightweight object that required minimal effort to move. Not seeing how this could be a problem we moved it about a foot towards the shade. A foot. It was like I had disturbed a hornets nest. I was immediately confronted by the waiter who said if we wanted the table moved we should have asked staff to do it for us - an option he never gave of course. The waiter argued like his life depended on it, raising his voice to the visible embarassment of other diners. Instead of accepting his communication left a bit to be desired, he preferred to shift the blame on the customer and talk down to me like a naughty schoolboy and lecture me about how expensive the table was. I questioned why he was spending so much energy arguing with a customer when any reasonable waiter would have offered to move the table a few inches - especially on a sweltering hot day. No concession to decency or respect forthcoming, I asked for his name and said I'd be writing a negative review. I also asked for the manager who let me be clear did not exactly cover himself in glory either. I'm not sure what story the waiter told him but the manager was combative and not willing to concede the situation could have been handled differently. He simply repeated the mantra about how expensive the table was. When my wife then questioned why the waiter had been so argumentative the manager lost any facade of being helpful and said "you know what, I'm going to ask you to leave" and disappeared before I could take his name. Shocking. I do hope the owners take this review in the right spirit and not try and shift the blame on the customer. Your waiter needs a lot of training in customer relations, or he should seriously question whether this type of job is for him. Dishonesty, disrespectfulness and a bad temper have no place in the hospitality sector. As for the manager, he should learn to strip away his bias and actually listen to what his customers are telling him. We were really looking forward to our first meal out after Covid lockdown, and it turned into one of the worst restaurant experiences any of us can remember.

Great setting and atmosphere, however food very poor quality.Attended yesterday with a party of 14 people kids, OAP's and adults. The vegetable soup was extremely poor and did not resemble any kind of vegetable soup i have ever eaten in my 48 years of life and although i was very hungry was not consumed by me. The roast beef was that tough it could not be chewed or even cut with the blunt cutlery provided. I did try to make a very simple complaint about the beef (i let the soup issue slide) and was promptly told by the waiter "I asked you if everything was ok with the food and you said yes". I pointed out that all 5 people that have the beef did not eat it and the question of the food quality was asked immediately after the plates were put in front of us (so yes they looked good at that point.)Would not recommend.

As a family we have enjoyed several meals here although little variation to the menu. One bad experience at end June 2019 has put me off and it is unlikely that I will return. If they think £7.50 (challenged) for a simple white wine spritzer is reasonable then they would do well to benchmark since much more lavish local establishments charge far less for the same. .NAB

Family celebration-10 adults 3 small children, the staff couldn’t do enough for us, sat in almost separate side room-hopefully didn’t disturb other diners. Food excellent-children’s came first so they could settle down- all totally delicious. Staff on hand to top up drinks & any queries answered. Such a great place, atmosphere, food & calmness(despite us being there!). Will certainly go back- equidistant for us all to meet.

With over 170,000 readers a week and being in the top 2% in London on Tripadvisor I feel as though I recognise a good venue for lunch. And, in fairness, this is a good venue. Service great and food excellent. They let themselves down badly in only one aspect of the whole experience! That was that they advertise wine vintages incorrectly and as such overcharge for what they sell. I asked for confirmation that they had exactly what they advertised and was told that they did not but had something similar. I accepted that and told the waiter that I wanted what they had but it was NOT as expensive as the one advertised and offered them a slightly reduced price which was rejected, clearly

Didn't know this place until a couple of months ago, i happened to drive by and stoped. My grilfriend and I were so happy with everything. The food was just amazing, proper freshly cooked meal. We had calamari and prawns as starters, burger and seabass for main, everything was delicious. Staff was really friendly. Overall 5 stars, a lovely experience, i will visit again soon definitely. Third Sunday lunch here with friends. Absolutely excellent every time. Helpful and friendly staff. Spotlessly clean, small details like fresh flowers and sparkling drinking glasses. All add with the fabulous food this place offers. Very popular with the local people which says it all. Looking forward to my next visit.

My nephew and his friend were visiting from New Zealand and South Korea, and we wanted meet with them and my mother to go for Sunday lunch. After searching the internet for local pubs and reading reviews I chose The Plough. This pub used to have a poor reputation in the past but has become far more restaurant than pub these days. Service was prompt and professional and the food was nice (roast lamb, roast pork and roast beef, plus a burger). Our visitors really enjoyed the main course, and we followed it up with sticky toffee pudding and apple and peach crumble. The afternoon was topped off with a look at Mountnessing windmill and a stroll along some local footpaths in the sunshine. A perfect Sunday afternoon.

We travelled north of the river to attend an event at the Brentwood Centre and found this restaurant on Trip Advisor. It was ranked around 9th in the area, but it’s proximity to our ultimate destination was a plus. We were the first customers of the evening, so it was empty when we arrived. This made us a little apprehensive, but we need not have been concerned. We were made to feel very welcome, drinks were served promptly and our food order taken. The menu was varied, there was the option of a couple of daily specials and the waiter was knowledgeable about the menu. Prosecco was sold by the glass (it was very good, so I had two). I started with mussels and my partner opted for the stuffed portobello mushrooms. Both were superb. For main I had calves liver and bacon, my only criticism is that the liver was not as tender as calves liver usually is, but it is a very small criticism as it was still well cooked and tasted delicious. My partner chose the lamb shank that fell from the bone and was as tender as expected. For finale I had the pear cheesecake and my partner the crumble. All the food was served hot, there was a decent gap between courses without waiting to long and the staff were attentive without being obsequious. By the time we left, the restaurant was filling up. If this is the 9th best restaurant in Brentwood, I need to visit the other 8. At under £100 for 3 courses with drinks and coffee for 2, we will definitely be back

Just back from a very nice lunch at The Plough. Both the stuffed portobello mushroom starter and the Parma ham wrapped cod were delicious as were the Mediterranean vegetables on which the fish was served. How refreshing to find a restaurant serving good food accompanied by suitable vegetables. So often nowadays the ubiquitous microwaved mixture of broccoli & carrots comes up with every order, whether it compliments the dish or not. Thank you, we will be back.

Had dinner with family Tuesday night. Restaurant is decorated in a modern and clean way, a lovely atmosphere to relax and enjoy yourself. We had the ham hock croquettes, chicken skewers and tiger prawns to start, each presented beautifully and tasted lovely, my only comment would be the ham hock was so filling!! For mains I had the baked salmon fillet and the others both had calves liver. All was cooked beautifully and so full if flavour!! I shared a dessert of lemon tart, which was light, fresh and tasty. Would definitely recommend! The waiter was friendly and attentive, we will be back soon!!

What a great venue, we were here for a birthday celebration and the place was perfect; it was a buffet style celebration with a proper party atmosphere, the food was delicious, the staff were friendly, engaging and welcoming and the night (7pm til midnight) went really smoothly with no-one waiting too long to be served. To top it off a silver charm, with huge sentimental value, was lost during the evening, 'The Kitchen' was contacted the next morning, they had found it and held on to it - so a massive thank you for that. Highly recommend the Brentwood Kitchen if you have special event to celebrate.

Visited for the first time on a very busy Saturday evening this interesting restaurant in a very attractive small town just of the high street. Its a modern bar/restaurant with an area outside for eating too with free parking. The staff are very friendly and the service was attentive the whole evening. The Asian menu offers main meals or tapas with the best of ingredients used.

Had a Sunday roast at this venue, all fresh vegetables, home made Yorkshire pudding I found that the vegetables wasn't seasoned, personally I don't like to add salt to my dinner but today I had to to add salt to give it taste, even the roast potatoes were bland, probably maris pipers which are not the best for roast potatoes, good size dinner
