The Plough in Chiltern

We held my Mum's 'Celebration of Life' at the Plough yesterday and thanks to Paola and Raphael it was more of a lovely party, which is exactly what Mum would have loved. I had told Paola that Mums favourite flowers were pink and they had put lots of lovely vases of fabulous arrangements around the pub, and not just a handful of Tuilips, but great vases of roses and all sorts. We also asked them to offer 'Bellini's' to people on arrival which they did and the wine was delicious as was all the food. The staff were friendly but professional and the chefs worked hard. A sad day was made bearable thanks to these guys and the setting was perfect for our 50 or so guests who sat in the comfortable chairs or mingled around the table and chairs. I would thoroughly recommend The Plough for any occassion. Thanks again to them all.

Lovely place, welcoming and friendly. The food is really excellent and the pizza exquisite. You can also buy wine by the glass if a bottle would be too much. Who would have thought you could find somewhere like this near Amersham. We will certainly be returning with family and friends. Thank you for a lovely evening.

Visited here on Saturday night for a family dinner. The decor was fantastic with a nod to Halloween. Food was delicious with really authentic Pizza's and a wonderful Beef Ragu. Service was exemplary and there was a good atmosphere in the restaurant. Highly recommended.

I had lunch here as a family group this Sunday, and it was the best food I've had for a long time. Amazingly delicious fried pizza dough starters and we all loved our main courses (some had the tagliatelle al rage, I had the aubergine, and my son had Frito mist which was fresh, crisp and delicious, and definitely better than traditional fish and chips. We pushed on through to have some gelato to finish, though I plan to come back another time and go easy on the starters in order to enjoy desert. It was surprisingly quiet for Sunday lunch given the standard of the food. Looking at the reviews, it appears a few have found the service let down the food, though in our case we had a cheerful waitress who looked after us diligently, and the owner also came to greet us at the start of the meal and say farewell at the end. I'll certainly be back, and can highly recommend.

Had a really great time here. The staff were immediately welcoming and continued to be attentive and helpful throughout the evening. The food (especially the pizza) was without a doubt the best I’ve had outside Italy! The highlight, however, was the wine - the owner was kind enough to show us around the shop attached to the restaurant and we went home with some lovely bottles. I’d highly recommend The Plough to anyone and will be back soon!

Considering this is a pub in small village, you’d think the owner would be welcoming and encouraging towards potential customers - we experienced the complete opposite. It was dead, despite being opposite the village fete (which is saying something), and we just wanted a drink outside, specifically in some shade. We moved a table no more than 2 metres under a parasol and received a sarcastic response from the owner, no hello or how are you; purely a ‘why are you moving my furniture around?’. We explained why, and he continued to be abrasive and said that we should move. He was so unwelcoming and even when we did an immediate u-turn to leave and said not to bother, he didn’t seem surprised or bothered that he lost money based on a mindless task that didn’t affect him in the slightest.

I'm someone who likes to eat out often, so having been looking forward to coming to this restaurant I was appalled by the terrible and unprofessional service we experienced here. Firstly after being rushed to put our order in at the bar, they brought our starters and only 2 of the mains together. We wanted our starter before main meal but were told 'it saves the waiter's legs' by bringing both together. Say no more. My father then had to wait for his main after my mum and I had eaten ours, when it finally came it was the wrong meal. The owner was very grumpy and far too defensive - simply no customer service, he said the third meal didn't go through to the kitchen then came back to charge us for this meal separately, we paid for it but just awful restaurant and staff. The food was good, but as the service was so awful, I would never return here, nor recommend this place to anyone. The service is just as important as quality of food when eating out, and this place fails on every count. Stay away is my advice.

We have returned here several times since our last review and it is still the best pizza that we can find in the area. Our friends have now all started to come here as they agree it is the best. We have had birthday celebrations here and it has always been great. You should try it.

I'm not local and was surprised to find The Plough so quiet at lunchtime for such a lovely country pub in a beautiful setting. Perhaps it was just that day but never mind. The food is terrific - as Italian as it gets with truly stand out pizzas! if I lived or worked nearby I would be in here most days. i would certainly urge anyone nearby in the area that enjoys tasty traditional Italian food to give this place a try.

Having lived and traveled around Italy for 4 years, I was absolutely delighted to find somewhere making such amazing pizza. The dough is perfect and the toppings delicious. Many places don’t serve smoked mozzarella so I was really happy to find this on the pizza menu. It really is the best pizza we have had in the UK. There is no kid’s menu but this did not matter. My son had a kid’s pizza which came i the shape of a bunny head and they kindly served my daughter a large bowl of pasta with butter, which she enjoyed. For our starters we ordered a portion on the fried pizza dough strips which we all loved- the olive oil and salt drizzle was perfection. We also ordered a fritto misto from the main as a sharing starter. Everything on it was beautifully cooked. For the cost, It would have been nice to have had some sort of dip provided with it but they do provide homemade dips at an extra charge. We will definitely be returning to The Plough for another of their wonderful pizzas!

Pizzas as usual excellent. Draught beer poor which not unusual! When we paid the bill we were charged £2.50 for 2tablespoons chilli oil. This wasn’t listed as an extra on the menu. Unacceptable!!!

Firstly, I have to say that the pizzas at The Plough are lovely. But I asked for some mayonnaise and when we got the bill we were charged £2 for a very small pot of it. No mention of this on the menu. Had I not been dining with a friend (and didn't want to cause a fuss) then I would've refused to pay. Also, the owner was very abrupt and grumpy and when we arrived we stood at the bar for several minutes waiting to be acknowledged even though the restaurant was virtually empty. Not recommended unless you're prepared to put with "Fawlty Towers" style service. PS we're locals and would normally support Winchmore Hill pubs.

We went with friends to have pizza and try the place. It was a very nice evening and the food was really good. The pizza was excellent as were the starters etc. The wines although quite pricey are really good and seem to be exclusive to this place. We will be returning with other friends etc soon.

We were very disappointed with the welcome (of lack of on arrival). Having taken the trouble to book I couldn't believe how disinterested they were with welcoming us seating us and providing menus. Once we were able to order the food was fine and well...

Seen this place on a walk and heard good things about it. Really delicious, authentic Italian food and every course was superb. Nice staff and setting as well, highly recommended!

Absolutely ridiculous not to be able to order from msin menu because 11 of off us i really fancies steak couldnt get it because not on pre order menu kids couldnt get butter for there bread as supposedly Italians dont use butter on there bread...

Friendly and warm welcome, followed by a delightful feast of salad, pizza and pasta selected from a varied menu. 🥰 Will definitely be back.

You’ll never get a better pizza anywhere else .. discovered this amazing place and had to take a pic of the “ hot calabrese “ … amazed at the topping and it just looked like a work of art… sadly it didn’t last long 😂

I often have Pizza at the plough, the staff are very accommodating of my 3 year old and always go out of their way to make you feel welcome. All the food in the menu is very tast and there’s a great selection of wine....

A lucky find. We had a funeral in Amersham and looking for a place for an after service reception/wake we found the plough. Raffael was very helpful and we had 75+ guests to a buffet meal with bar available. I couldn’t have found a better...

Thank goodness the plough is open once more. At last we have some decent food and beer in the village! Well done as-well for properly observing the social distancing rules and making it a lovely secure “oasis” to come and enjoy excellent Italian food. We came here last week for some lunch and the pizzas were amazing as-well as the seafood, beautifully fresh.We have missed you!!!

Wish I lived closer as the Plough would definitely become my local! Popped in for a late lunch recently and although 'officially' the kitchen was about to close it was absolutely no problem to keep it open for us to order our lunch - all done with a smile! A wonderful atmosphere, really friendly and lovely staff and the fish platter to share that we had was a very generous portion and cooked to perfection. Loved the decor - in fact, don't think there is anything about the Plough not to like!

Paola and Rafa, Welcome back...... having waited so long, it was a real pleasure to sit in and eat your fabulous pizzas and drink your great wine. The bar area looks great and shows how much time and effort you have put in to make the Plough a safe and pleasant place to dine in the evening. But, having passed by on a Friday afternoon, it was great to see how busy and buzzing it was during lunch time. The Plough is by far the nicest and relaxed pub/restaurant for miles around and I hope that you go from strength to strength as we all adjust to the new normal

First visit since it became an Italian. We were really impressed with the food, service and ambiance. My daughter said the Pizza was delicious and she is not easily pleased. Will definitely go again

Had the place to ourselves which wasn't a problem and not too surprising for a Monday. Food was good together with the service. Will return in the future.

As a family, we visit the Plough at least once a week. We now try our best to visit new places for food but find it difficult as we always come away so satisfied at the Plough, and every visit differs. The atmosphere is really comfortable and has a homely feel to it with very personal service. The food is delicious and changes every time we go there. We all have very different tastes so our orders range from pasta, pizzas, fish and salads, of which all never disappoint. As wine drinkers, the wine selection is broad and gives us the option to change it up with our visits. Equally, they serve non- alcoholic beers which caters for my brother. Thank You to Daniella and the team for always making us feel so welcome :)

Hi I visit the Plough at least once a Month and the Italian food never disappoints it really is done very well buy people who care . I have. Had the Pizza here on quite a few occasions and really think that it is the best in the area. it is also a Pub not just a Restaurant so is a nice relaxed atmosphere . Give the Food here a try you will not be disappointed .

This was our second visit for lunch to the pub. The first was two years ago! We liked it very much on our first visit,so wanted to return and were not disappointed! It is a very dog friendly pub and there were several dogs with owners including our own. The place has a very friendly, local atmosphere and everyone is very welcoming. You can sit in the public area if you bring your dog. There is also a separate restaurant area, not for dogs! This is a very good Italian gastropub! We had Arancini and Buratta salad as starters. Both were wolfed down quickly, and much enjoyed! Then a very nice thin crust vegetarian pizza with pesto. We also had the dish of the day, which was a crab linguine. All the dishes were very well prepared and delicious! The linguine was perfectly cooked al dente, and you could taste the crab meat in the linguine, which is not always the case! This was all washed down with a bottle of Montepulciano D'Abruzzo red wine, which went well with the meal! Lovely setting by the Heath and cozy atmosphere inside! Recommended!

If you like pizza, authentic Italian pizza then this is the place for you! I've been here around 5-6 times now and it's always great.

Have been to this restaurant three times. Whilst the Saturday evening experience was fine, both of the weekly evening dining experiences were below par. The pizza and pasta dishes were uninteresting and not tasty: it seems as though the chef during the week is not as good as at the weekend. The pizzas were soggy in the middle and the pasta tasteless. Do they re-heat stuff during the week or use frozen?? Anyway, won't be returning there during the week again. Also: no chocolate desserts on the menu!!

Have been to this pub many times. Unfortunately they never seem to hold much wine in stock, we always try to order the Gavi and told each time "we have just ran out of that" take it off the wine list! I absolutely love the pizza's in this pub cooked in a lovely grand pizza oven, but today my pizza was not the best I have had. I always go for the Gorgonzola with pear - it was dry - not enough cheese and the pear too much of the outside skin was put onto it. This is not saying that we will not go back as the pub is set in a lovely village and is very homely with their log fire. Just feel the place needs a bit of a revamp especially the menu's.

The food and service in The Plough is always top notch. The owner and staff are friendly and helpful with recommendations, but also unobtrusive, allowing you to enjoy your meal. It was quiet for a Sunday lunchtime, but that was perfect for us, and as always it was the food that was the winner. Highly recommend The Plough.

Went here for my sons birthday as he had decided he wanted pizza but we didn’t want to go to a chain. We were so impressed. The pizza was delicious and cooked in a proper wood-fired oven. We also tried the house special (belly of pork) and pasta. Portions were generous and well flavoured. It was a nice setting with spacious seating and friendly staff. It went down a storm with everyone. We’ll be back for sure

Came here the other week for lunch and we had some amazing sharing platters of Italian cheese and meat from their delicatessen stocked for Xmas. You must visit the shop and stock up, I’ve never seen some of these before, like mortadella with truffle and some ubriaco reserva. A must visit for Christmas! Puts even Waitrose collection to shame

Good, friendly pub with a tasty menu and a great outdoor space to enjoy lazy summer afternoons- but its not just for the summer- this pub has a lovely beamy interior, lots of nooks to snuggle into after a dog walk- and the dog is as welcome as you are.

We went on a Wednesday evening at 6.30pm and it was quiet. The food came quickly and was lovely.

Came to us highly recommended and fully justified this. Sought a quiet meal with my wife and were impressed with the ambience. Good choice from menu - melanzane particularly to be recommended. Look forward to a return visit

Went here with friends last weekend and had a lovely meal. The Italian food here is very authentic, we had a great meal with 2 bottles of red Tuscan wine, desert and G&Ts; to start for under £50/ head with tip. We were the last to leave and not pressured at all to vacate. Definitely returning here!

We visited yesterday on a lovely sunny evening - the interior and exterior of The Plough are fabulous, and the outside area is perfect for soaking up the sun, such a quiet and picturesque spot! The drink choice is great and the food has been lovely - especially the pizza! I ordered a salad yesterday (for £12) and it was tiny, like a side salad, which was disappointing. Didn't come with any leaves so just beetroot, goats cheese and onion... Definitely not a main meal. My family all enjoyed their food though although we all agreed it was a bit pricey for what you get - but always nice to eat at an independent place with interesting menu. Would definitely try again, especially for drinks and a light bite!

Great potential with helpful hardworking staff, freshly cooked food, lovely venue and location but SOOO slow food taking 40 mins to an hour to arrive. Not altogether brilliant for the friend with us who has a life threatening allergic reaction to eggs. I had indicated this on the comment section when making the booking. There was just one dessert she could eat - and it wasn’t a available. Chips weren’t safe because of cross contamination from egg containing items using the same fryer. Almost a really lovely evening.

We went here to celebrate my sister's 50th birthday in June. There were 11 of us and we all really enjoyed the evening - the ambience, the staff and the food were excellent. My mum's favourite meal is a capresse salad - this wasn't on the menu but the waiter had one made for her anyway, so we had 11 happy customers. Thank you for a very special evening!

What used to be a good establishment has really let itself go. The service is appalling, the young management team are rude and obnoxious. The quality of the food is reflected in this so I wouldn't waste your time or money visiting this place!

I always love going to The Plough, the food is always amazing, the staff are always welcoming and make good recommendations. Highly recommend the Buffalina pizza and the black ink spaghetti with mixed seafood. Good food, good wine, good Aperol Spritz, good company.

Nice pub with restored interiors.....what makes it special is the authentic Italian food and friendly service. Only downside is drinks a little pricey. Worth a visit if you like lovely food in a traditional pub.

Been here several times now. Wonderful country pub with excellent Italian food in genuine wood fired pizza ovens. I usually treat myself to a calzone with lots of extras but tonight I opted for some linguine. Awesome tastes , just love this place.

Good pizzas but not worthy nearly 90 minutes wait. Take away orders seem to have priority over restaurant customers. Had heard good things but disappointing Visit.

We had a lovely evening in the restaurant. The food was excellent. My dish - the seafood stew was really good and was recommended by the waiter. The service was good not intrusive but not left alone. We will definitely be coming back.

We booked our father’s Wake here after cremation locally, extremely lucky as it was all organised with less than a weeks notice. Staff were very helpful and explained clearly what we could expect on booking.

We were just passing and fancied some lunch.. wow.. an Italian pub/restaurant in the middle of a small hamlet, on a green..

Lovely place in a lovely village, not too far from the crematorium. Food was excellent and staff were friendly and welcoming. The pub itself is very old and spacious with lots of places to sit down and chat. We'd booked for about 50 people but more like 70 were there and although it was crowded there were enough chairs, settees and tables for everyone to be comfortable with.

Although we have lived in the Chiltern Hills since 1995, and during that time have been to very many restaurants and pubs all around the '3 Counties', oddly we have never been in Winchmore Hill before! By off-chance we went to The Plough last night on the recommendation of a friend. What an absolutely wonderful place. It is tastefully decorated (must have been painstakingly restored) The kitchen 'open style' with genuine wood-fired pizza oven. The menu selection was simply wonderful. The place oozes authenticity and real class. The food which our party ordered was uniformly perfectly presented and cooked, and tasty to the last morsel. Having discovered this little gem of a restaurant we will most definitely be back again.

We met friends here for a lunch on Sunday. The service was great and tbe kids could run around outside then come in and enjoy great Italian food and specifically great pizza. A great pub with great food

Set in a quiet little village in the Chilterns, away from any commercial activity, very residential location, large place with ample parking. Lunch on a quiet Friday soon after it opened for the public . Some customers at the start, then more... clearly a popular place for families.

We went to The Plough after my Dad's funeral at Chiltern Crematorium. There were 12 of us and we had a lovely meal and were able to toast Dad with Coca Cola ! Staff were very accommodating and the food was great - especially the pizzas. We didn't arrange it as an after funeral meal so the atmosphere in the pub was lovely. Thank you everyone. Memories really matter.

We are regulars here and really enjoy the location of the pub especially on a summers day and sunset.

Found this place on an off chance, and have to say that it's the best authentic pizza in Amersham, if you love Italian food, you'll love it here. Cosy pub atmosphere and great service, looking forward to sitting outside in the summer!

Fantastic Italian pizza and pasta

We were taken to The Plough last year by some friends. What a hidden gem! We introduced some friends to this lovely place last week. It is just like eating in an Italian restaurant abroad. Food is excellent, great service and a lovely ambience. Is on our list of local good places to eat now.

Went with 6 adults and 1 infant for a late Sunday lunch. The service was friendly, helpful and efficient. The food was generally very good but the pizzas and the roast lamb were outstanding. It is an establishment I can heartily recommend.

Arrived late Saturday evening, having driven back from S E London. No better place for a truly authentic Italian pizza and a glass of excellent wine. There is always a warm welcome and a comfortable atmosphere.
