Reminiscent of Littlewoods caf circa 1973. Enough said. Bagel inedible. Tea not made with boiling water. Dreary staff and surroundings. Come on John Lewis. You are taking the mick.

Nice for a cup of tea but when are they going to do something about the food? Unfortunately, they never have any decent cakes, they are consistently unappetising. Nothing at all with real cream. The scone I got was inedible - never again!

Appealing value for money, had the fish and chips, more like a child's portion than a portion fit for an adult. The size of the looks like it has been reduced by half its size in last few months and priced increased. Not what you would expect from John Lewis

Generally we have found this cafe preferable to the awful one at the Cheadle John Lewis which I have reviewed separately in the past. However this last visit was awful. They had sold out of most things and the 2 ladies serving were clearly overwhelmed. The scanner wasn’t working so no-one could scan their My JL cards. Half the restaurant gets roped off early (always happens) and this time we had to suffer the staff continually putting chairs on tables all around us at an absurdly slow pace. For some reason they start this around an hour before closing pathologically slowly rather than say 15 mins before at a normal pace!

Visited cafe yesterday. We had the smoked salmon and cream cheese bagels. The bagel was a bit soft. Tea was OK . Very busy I assume because of the tiny cafe at the new M and S in Liverpool 1. Staff friendly as always. Only criticism is that they have the sandwiches at a separate kiosk to the cakes. The hot food is at a third kiosk.

Asked for a slice of Victoria sponge and received a half slice with the end all squashed. When I asked for it to be replaced with an new slice the woman wasn't very happy. She did replace it with another slice not an awful lot better than the first. I'm sorry I didn't just leave at that point. Order coffee and asked for two glasses of tap water.. I was met with the most disgusted look of the woman like it was such a big ask. Why don't they have a water station? Over priced very Unhappy and unfriendly staff. Don't expect anything special here, the counter staff very busy..... talking to each other, they could have made life easier for themselves and customers by concentrating on serving rather than carrying on with their own conversation, I felt like I should have apologised for interrupting them... Coffee and cake are not as good these days compared to how they used to be a few years ago. Disappointing.

Busy cafe in John Lewis. Difficult to see at times what’s there to eat and the sandwiches looked disappointing so opted for steak and ale pie with chips and peas and quiche and side salad for me. It was all very edible but clearly been there a while as quiche felt over cooked to me and it was only 12 noon. The cakes looked better but we didn’t have them. I was disappointed and honestly expected better.

This is located within the john Lewis department store in Liverpool One. The food itself is ok, bit overpriced maybe, but my main gripe is the location of the tills which are out of the way and by the time, you have queued to pay, the food is lukewarm.

You certainly would expect better from John Lewis. Today, I met some friends for lunch, tomato soup and basil .. simple , if you like thin warmish soup and a rock hard piece of bread that I exchanged for yet another rock hard piece of bread, expensive and very poor. New venue required for our next trip.

We were regular visitors to the John Lewis and George Henry Lee restaurant before that but on our recent visit we were both disappointed with the quality of the food but worst of all, when we got up and started putting our coats on, anther meal was put on the table in front of me by a staff member on behalf of another customer! The staff member obviously saw I was surprised that we were being hurried so let out out a "SORREEE" ! We had only stayed long enough to eat our not very nice meals and certainly weren't sitting at a table reading a paper with an empty cup in front of us! There were other empty tables and we both said "why us". We left deciding we would find somewhere else which we now have. Price is much the same, quality better as are the staff. We also decided that the corner couch we were going to order we would order elsewhere if that was the attitude of the staff to their customers.

My visit to The Place To Eat in John Lewis today was surprisingly good. They serve cream tea, consisting of a scone with clotted cream and jam, as well as a hot drink of your choice for £4.95, which I don't think is bad value. I opted for a plain scone with just butter because I'm not a big fan of creamy gloop on my scones. For that, they only charged me £4.65. The service was also reasonably good - the staff were friendly enough and got through the short queue relatively quickly. The only thing I would note is that the hot food served is extortionately priced. The menu outside looks more like a lawyer's bank statement, as everything is £9-£10, which is a rip off! I can't comment on the quality of food, but I would note it is served canteen style. I'm not sure food prepared like school dinners warrants such prices, but whatever. Also, the café is a bit dated in respect of décor. It was clean and comfortable granted, but I'm surprised the 1990s haven't called John Lewis asking for their tables back! They need to throw some of them on the council tip and get some new ones in! Having said that, let's be honest - the salient point of this review is that I enjoyed a reasonably priced scone and a pot of tea today in John Lewis' café. If you too would like a scone, you know the place to eat it is The Place to Eat!

This has been bugging me for a while now so I've had to post this on here to warn potential visitors! The hot food counter seems to inexplicably close up at 2:30 in the afternoon even though there is still a large demand for hot food and the staff actively have to turn away customers, which baffles me. Do John Lewis not like money? Shoppers do not want the stale sandwiches and rock hard cakes, they want a proper meal for their lunch. I've since resorted to visiting M&S cafe instead as they serve hot food until 5pm and quite honestly their cutlery is spotless compared to John Lewis. Really poor service from such a large, well known chain.

We opted for fish, chips and peas in this very busy restaurant. The place was packed and the food looked good. The fish was very nice but the batter on the fish was almost inedible it was so soggy. My husband took his back and it was replaced but what was brought to him was almost as bad. As a result of this I contacted JLP customer service to complain, adding photographs. I received an email just over 24 hours later, apologising for the delaying replying. Needless to say it was a standard, patronising reply that said nothing. Typical corporate response.

Calling in for a coffee a few weeks ago I decided to have sausages and mash for lunch to save cooking later. I couldn’t see any mash but there was a bowl full of something that looked revolting, it was brown and very sloppy, it almost looked like puréed apple - that was the mash ! I mentioned it to the server and she didn’t look too surprised when I told her to forget about it and went elsewhere. Read the reviews John Lewis and get your act together.

Had we stuck to that, it would have been bearable.I made the mistake of having a hot meal - roast chicken and gravy, something that resembled sliced fried potatoes and minted 'mushy' peas. We are regular customers of the John Lewis store, but, haven't visited this 'Place' very much at all. (My Wife always takes me to a nearby major department store, where she's a gold card holder!). There are large seating areas to either side of the entrance, with some padded bench seating, and padded armchairs. The tables are usually grouped for 4 persons. All are within easy reach of the various counters, e.g., Cold Table, Children's, Expresso, Patisserie... Both areas have very high windows, which almost completely fill the outside walls. The views are impressive; down to the Albert Dock, over the 'Garden' area behind, the Q.E.II Courts, or, up into the Paradise Street area. The Menu choice was varied, but, I was surprised that it had such a small choice overall, even allowing for the fact that there is a 'proper' Restaurant elsewhere in the Store. Breakfast includes sandwiches, baguettes and pancakes. Other Menus are Lunch, Soup (2 soups, one being for children), Children's (ratatouille or meatballs, both with pasta), and the Patisserie, which lists over dozen items. A few vegetarian, and, gluten-free options, are available. As we still had more shopping to do, we simply had coffees, with a scone and chocolate cake. I will call in again, and sample some other items, and, maybe give a higher rating than now.

The staff remain great and committed and, I suspect, loyal to JL as they just rolled their eyes when we voiced our observations.Shame. We shop in JL and the cafe is convenient. Stopped by for lunch. Had a goat's cheese and fig tartlet. Trouble with individual dishes like this one is that it means more pastry (less healthy) in relation to filling (more healthy). It came with undressed salad. I eventually found some mayonnaise but in a cheap difficult-to-get-into packet made by Heinz (not my favourite brand).Afterwards I had a chocolate muffin - somewhat dry. I couldn't believe it that the cakes were not protected by sneeze-proof screens as I walked by. Why ever not? It's not as if one could help oneself. One had to ask to be served by someone on the other side of the cake counter.I had a cappuccino. Not the best by any stretch of the imagination in terms of taste. Made by someone using one of those simplified machines. Cutting corners doesn't work. The cutlery was poor quality and I had doubts about its cleanliness. I didn't like it being stored in vertical containers. Difficult to see what I was picking up.The only good things about this experience were it was quick to get through and pay. We called in on Sunday Afternoon it was 4.25pm. The shop shuts at 5.00pm on Sunday. There was a small queue in the restaurant and we were just going to have a coffee and a cake. As we ordered the coffee we looked for the cakes as the people in the front of the queue had cakes on their trays. We noticed the cakes being wheeled away on a trolley into the kitchen. So no cakes, just coffee.I cannot undertand them serving coffee, but taking away the cakes. This disappointed and amazed us. Terrible customer service.

I visited here with a friend for some breakfast, I couldn't believe how overpriced it was for what you got. It cost me £9 for some toast, sausage, bacon and a coffee. We ordered our food which took so long, by the time we had been seated it had gone cold. I went back and explained this to a member of staff and without any questioning the lady kindly replaced my toast with fresh, hot pieces instead. Overall I probably would not go back as I don't think it's value for money, the only nice thing really was the coffee which was around £3. In my opinion you can get better quality food for a much cheaper price.

I eat here about once a week, but of late have been disappointed with the under- baked fruit scones and the dry childrens sandwiches. I think this was probably a one off". Nice views over Liverpool One from the left hand side of the restaurant.

How quickly you can go down. My last review (quite recently) was 5 stars for the salad bowls ....... these large bowls have been replaced with a pre-packed plastic box salad which are pittyfully small and lame with micro portions of leaves and bits.Yes they are cheaper but still nearly £6.Very, Very Disappointing ..... come on John Lewis is this now the price and quality of outside catering. I am afraid we will only be going back for the odd cake ..... such a shame!

The goat's cheese and fig quiche that I had was perfectly fine, but they still charge a pound extra for each additional veg. choice (other than a small, salad garnish). This means that the bill for lunch is normally higher than it should be, bearing in mind this is a self-service cafeteria. Cakes are expensive too and look better than they taste. Some of the staff can be quite abrupt; others are really nice, so maybe some training is in order.

Myself and husband always go to JL Liverpool One for a quick bite to eat, pot of tea/cup of coffee whenever we are shopping in Liverpool (several times each month). It is bright and has lovely large windows, with views to the Albert Dock and River Mersey, depending on where you sit. However, the last few lunches we've had there, floor was dirty and tables not cleared. I'm sure staff are busy but there is really no excuse. Staff are usually pleasant but there are one or two who aren't. Unfortunately you cannot purchase their wonderful chocolate orange cake anymore, the eclairs are greasy and tasteless, some of the other cakes are bone dry. Savoury food has been ok so far. At certain times of the day it is very full and difficult to obtain a table (which I guess, does show that it is still a popular place to eat). We've decided to try somewhere else next time. Though I'd really like to see some improvement.

Stopped in here as it was getting late in the afternoon and we hadn't eaten.Personally I hate the millions of separate counters one for sandwiches ; one for soup ; on for hot foodI understand a separate one for tea and coffee but when you have two people who want completely different things its not easy - esapecially when we got hot food and were told to pay at a specific checkout. Not a good experience.Having said that the food was ok - the sewwt potato and spinach curry was good, but the poppadom was awash with oil.Only small bottle of diet coke seem o be availableok but will not be visiting again.

Popped in for a quick bite to eat and a drink. We just had scones with butter and tea. Sultana scones but although tasty and light not many sultanas. The reason I have only given score of 4 out of 5 was the milk! Petty I know but I hate those little mini plastic pots. Surely jug of milk not to expensive to do? The milk was ok but I had trouble opening pot and it went on my jacket. Can you get a jug? I did wait for milk at counter and was told to take pots-not in a rude way I must add.

On my recent trip to Liverpool I popped into John Lewis cafe for a light bite. I never normally leave reviews for chain type places but I felt I had to compliment the lovely atmosphere created in this cafe which is hard to find in places such as this. The staff were extremely attentive especially to my dietary requirements of being a vegetarian. The lovely girl on the till helped me study the menu to find something as I had forgotten my reading glasses and explained that I could have an extra shot in my coffee when I was concerned it would not be strong enough. I suggest they should wear name badges so I could thank her properly but she must have been the same age as myself (twentiesh), slim with light brown hair. Anyway, the service and help made me feel at ease in the middle of the stressful day and the cashiers friendly attitude cheered me up massively. It is lovely to feel valued in a chain store.

We stopped here for lunch during a recent shopping trip. It wasn't very busy when we were here and we both had a sandwich each which were nice and fresh. The price paid was about average but it was the dirt of the floor and the tables waiting to be cleared that were off putting. We were there for about 30 minutes and the tables and floor around us weren't cleaned in that time. If we had seen how dirty the floors were [used serviettes, empty salt and pepper sachets etc.] before we'd purchased our food, we'd have gone elsewhere.

Sometimes in life you have to pay more than a few pounds for a decent meal - John Lewis is a hallmark of quality and there is something for everyone here. A great selection of salads, soups, cakes, pastries and hot meals. The drinks are plentiful and you can even have a drop of alcohol if the occasion permits. Wonderful service and a warm atmosphere - it's not extortionate!!

Spur of the moment decision to call in and check out the lunch menu here.My pal is celiac and has to be careful about what he eats; but I can eat anything (within reason!). At first we thought the lunch menu might be a bit restricted - but then we spotted the salad range on offer. We both chose Tuna Nicoise, with lemon infused olive oil dressing.#Note to self - make your own lemon olive oil....Verdict?Very tasty. Both meals devoured with relish. I liked the deep bowl method for serving the salad.Hygiene - always important.Very good.Ambience?A bit down market perhaps, but fine.Staff?Top notch.Go again?Definitely.

I always visit Eat as you can guarantee a lovely soup to make you feel satisfied. Never been disappointed so far - it's pricey compared to other places but the quality of food is much better so you pay for what you get. Always find the staff very friendly and helpful - can get very busy so be prepared to wait.

This restaurant serves both hot dishes, e.g. gazed chicken with vegetables and potatoes, sweet potato, squash and chick pea curry with boiled rice and popadum, home-made soups; and also cold dishes such as salads, various baguettes and sandwiches. Most of these are between £6 and £8. There are vegetarian options, and wheelchair users can access the restaurant via the lifts. There are no obstacles. There is a meal deal for children comprising 5 items - sandwiches, drinks, fruits, yoghurts etc, which costs £4.50. The meals are tasty and the service is very good. The views of Liverpool and the docks are an additional attraction. My only wish - site the tables a bit further apart!

You'll be charged extra for chips and veg but things have definitely improved here. Cheese and tomato quiche was light with a lovely crisp pastry base. This was followed by a huge and delicious chocolate eclair, bursting with fresh cream and totally indulgent. Staff were lovely too. They just need to look at the prices.

When arriving, I was surprised at the queue to get in. People were being directed to seats by friendly and welcoming staff, however this was around Christmas time, and they had a Christmas lunch menu so the queue was not surprising. The menu was surprisingly diverse, ranging from salads and sandwiches to meals from the hot counter. The cafe even had it's own patisserie. All the food and drink prices were fairly reasonable for the location of the cafe, and I would eat here again.

Have eaten here before nd it was quite good but alas this time it was not. Fish & chips - the fish had vast amounts of batter - fish was ok but gross amounts of batter and the chips were very dry. Semi real chip / fries - not good. Pease were ok as was the coffee. Lets hope it returns to normal after Christmas

Came here on a Tuesday at 12.30 pm and faced a queue of around 20 people which luckily was very quickly moved. Wasn't feeling too hungry so had a children's Christmas dinner which seemed to be the same size as a regular dinner but for half the price, would definitely try this with other meals! Great selection of hot food, cold sandwiches, salads, soups and bakery treats.

Visited today with a friend. We both had a turkey, stuffing and cranberry roll at a cost of £6 each. They were absolutely disgusting, the filling was not too bad but the baguette Was heavy and tasted uncooked, we both left most of it.Fellow diners at an adjoining table had the same meal and we could see they were also disappointed.when John Lewis had the little cafe on the ground floor they did hot panni's and a good choice of sandwiches but now the cold section is a joke. Cakes and drinks remain good. This is our last visit it's back to Marks and Spencer's for us.

Great stay, bed was absolutely massive and the rooms are a good size. The only negatives were that the events in the evening were quite loud when we were winding down and the shower didn’t work at all. The rooms could do with a lick of paint, but the food and service was incredible - really big portions.

In typical British weather it was pouring down with rain. My mum and I were looking for somewhere to get out and have a bite. My mum said she'd wanted to come for some time as we used to pass often when I was younger. We were greeted by super friendly staff who managed to make a table for us despite not having a reservation. Some really excellent choices, we had a hard time choosing! Food was lovely. Atmosphere was great. Staff were friendly and helpful without being overbearing! Really enjoyed our meal there and mum has asked if we can go again in a few weeks! Lovely spot with great views. Couldn't of asked for better.

If you want endless trails of public, including brassy teens traipsing in and out to the filthy toilets, overpriced inedible food, if the public areas are dirty then what is the kitchen like? Dirty tables and furniture, tramps sleeping in tents outside with rubbish and filth everywhere and stinking of urine, people vaping to their hearts content, then this is the place for you. Enjoy!
