The Pig and Butcher in Islington

Went for a Sunday roast today and was absolutely appalled by the service. Firstly the wine took 40 mins to finally get right as 2 of the 3 bottles we ordered were not available. When we finally ordered the food it was nice but we were not offered any sauces or extras (gravy, veg etc.) and the cauliflower cheese we ordered was not brought out, nor were we checked in on during the meal. It was extremely busy at the bar area where we were sat and had customers and staff walking up and down past our table (one knocking off my friends bag from her chair). This did not create an ambient eating experience despite the nice food. When we finished our meal we were immediately brought out dessert menus. We asked for Irish coffees which the server did not recognise and when they asked at the bar we were told they didn’t serve them. We were brought the bill and we advised the server that we would not be paying the service charge. The server just said “okay” and proceeded to take off the service charge and we paid for the food. We would have happily explained why we were unhappy with the experience but were not given the opportunity and felt like we were just another customer they wanted to get in and out and were probably used it. Additionally we saw the server walk up to the manager who just shrugged their shoulders. Extremely disappointed after being recommended by a friend and we were out celebrating her birthday, additionally the cost and Michelin star do not match the abysmal service received .

Our experience started off on the wrong foot, as they made us wait for a table for 20 minutes, even though we had a reservation & there were tables available. Things got worse when they seated us at the table we were waiting for and it was right beside a table in the corner upstairs with a screaming child. The entire dining room kept turning around to stare, as it was incredibly loud and quite disruptive. The staff paid no mind and the parents were happy to let him threw a major tantrum while they ignored his piercing yelling. After that, it was hard to be well-positioned to enjoy our Sunday dinner. The scotch eggs were absolutely the best scotch eggs I’ve ever had, and the wine menu had a great selection. The portion of lamb (for 2) that came was quite small, and something I could easily cook at home with more flavor. Everything was fairly flavorless and needed a lot of salt (and I don’t particularly like salty things). The dessert was quite nice, but somewhat forgettable. I guess this is illustrative of true British pub food, but it was a bit of a let down, and it was too bad about the ambiance and lack of care for the diners.

Came for the roast, was excellent and would come again. Portion sizes were great too. Beef was a little bit dry and lacking flavour though which is why it lost a point.

Unfortunately, the breakfast experience was disappointing. Our server was inattentive and borderline rude, forgetting both our waters and orange juice. Three of us ordered the breakfast muffin, which was overly salty, and two had the full English, which they didn’t enjoy at all. While the setting is lovely, the service and food quality didn’t live up to expectations—I won’t be returning for breakfast.

Came here for dinner in March 2025. I have visited Pig & Butcher many times before for a roast which requires advanced booking but never have I visited just for dinner. I was able to get a reservation online the same day on a weekend. All the food is good, a typical good quality Gastropub with affordable pricing. Service was good and the atmosphere was good. We exceeded our table time allocation but were not rushed off our table. I would definitely recommend pig and butcher for anyone looking for Gastro pub experience that delivers consistently.

Roast was rather tasteless and tough. Potatoes were ok. Veggies were ok. Yorkshire pudding was the best for the plate. Nice pint of Guinness.

The culinary experience at Pig & Butcher is exceptional. Their scotch egg was a delight and the 60-day aged côte de boeuf was exquisitely prepared - truly showcasing their butchery expertise. Unfortunately, the outstanding food was overshadowed by the excessive noise level in the main dining room, even during Saturday lunch. While I understand it's marketed as a gastropub with a lively atmosphere, the acoustics made it virtually impossible to hold a conversation at our table. We reluctantly cut our meal short because the noise became unbearable. The restaurant needs to address this issue - either by reducing the number of tables or adding sound treatment to the space. Great food deserves an environment where it can be properly enjoyed and appreciated. If you're seeking excellent meat-focused cuisine, Pig & Butcher delivers magnificently, but be prepared for a challenging acoustic experience, even at lunchtime on weekends.

Every course was delicious . Fabulous scotch egg made with black pudding with a perfect egg inside. The Hake Cassoulet equally delicious along with the dessert. Couldn't fault the service. This is an extremely rare review from me as I find most restaurants mediocre. Well done

Looks like a pub but in fact a large restaurant. The back section is very noisy when the restaurant is full. Staff were friendly and attentive. Steak was great but the sides and starters were pretty average. For 2 starters, 2 mains and 3 drinks the bill was £145. Expensive

Good gastropub. Drink service (for a 'pub') was poor. It felt that the servers had time, but bar staff very busy. Pork belly was one of the best ever for me. I'll will be back as food was very good.

We had the midweek, seasonal set lunch menu which was delicious and great value. The staff were very friendly and attentive. I would definitely recommend!

the price wouldn't be a problem but the unbearable noise absolutely yes. It's not possible that there aren't any sound-absorbing panels or someone to deal with barking customers. I couldn't exchange a word at my table. never again

We were shown to our table late but made to leave before we had finished our drinks. Also, £27 for a bog standard roast. I wouldn’t bother coming back.

Pedimos el plato de compartir ya que éramos 4 más un niño de 2 años y, aparte de 2 huevos fritos que se servían por separado, todo lo demás llegó caliente en una sartén grande que casi encaja en la mesa. La sartén estaba llena de deliciosos artículos y nos encantaron especialmente las deliciosas rodajas gruesas de tocino, las sabrosas salchichas, tomates y hongos. Encontramos las rodajas de patata un poco demasiado saladas para nuestro gusto. El brunch se sirvió con rebanadas gruesas de tostadas y pequeñas ollas de frijoles horneados. Estábamos totalmente llenos al final y, una vez que hayamos perdido todo el peso que debemos haber engordado, ¡volveremos de nuevo!

Average roast tbh. Meat was nice but everything else was bog standard. Potatoes and Yorkshire weren’t fresh

I went based on the recommendation of a plurality of review / blog websites. No doubt many of you looking at these reviews were similarly thrust in the direction of this place. My bias here is that I'm not a Londoner, but Oxford is a close enough approximation in overpriced-ness. For Sunday lunch, I won't name the pub in Oxford, but if you know you know: incredible food at a far lower price. On the absolute scale of things this pub isn't bad (and beats many an insipid chain that insidiously occupies much of central London). However, none of the food particularly _wows_, at least not for the money. Perhaps I'm simply too smitten by THE pub in Oxford, but some things are simply objective. For instance, the crispness of the roast potatoes here is noticably lower. Nor was the portion size of the roast itself as large. With a few sides (including Clauiflower cheese), and a lamb to share, it came to £56 per person. That is shocking. Albeit with no sides, the place in Oxford comes to £21 for the main (including service charge). If you actually care about food, spend the £35 extra on a train ticket out of London (and be weary of the exceedingly bland pallet of British people leaving reviews).

Service was great! Desserts were the highlight of the menu. We had all the starters and the fish as a main. Kind of meh! But atmosphere and service are a 10/10!

So happy that we chose to come here as our Sunday Roast while on holiday in the UK. The atmosphere was lovely, the food was absolutely delicious (easily the BEST Scotch Egg that I've ever eaten), the staff and our server were all very kind and attentive, and I thoroughly enjoyed chatting about wine with the owner (excellent selection by the glass!) I've already recommended The Pig and Butcher to several friends and will certainly return on our next visit across the pond! Thank you so much for a lovely experience!

Go for the breakfast on weekends - I was lucky enough to get a reservation for their first day serving breakfasts. Amazing- without doubt one of the finest fry ups London has to offer.

Really delicious food - loved the beetroot and goat cheese appetiser, the crab crostini, the mussels, the halibut, the gnocchi, the venison and the sirloin (though the last one one was chewy at certain parts). There’s aren’t too many veggie options but what’s there is nice. The ambiance is lovely and cozy. Service was good, although they took a long time with our mains and then weren’t able to offer dessert as they needed our table for the next reservation - they were apologetic about this and gave us negronis on the house (which were delicious) that we enjoyed at the bar. Will need to come back for dessert! Came back for lunch and the food was just as yum - loved the monkfish curry, the gnocchi and the pork mains. Still haven’t had dessert here so will def come back!

Our first time at this restaurant and what a find! We enjoyed a superb lunch, staying almost 3hrs! Lovely reception and attentive service. In particular I would like to mention the ‘mature’ lady who made us feel especially welcome. We will be back!

Lovely suprise for a cold rainy monday night. From the deliscious food to the attentive waitress, everything was amazing and spot on. The vibe was really good for a first of the week and definitely will be coming back.

This is a must visit. Everything we ordered was perfect. We tried the scotch egg, fried gnocchi and the pork belly. Also a delicious sticky toffee pudding for dessert. Lovely atmosphere, very cozy.

Good quality of the products, the menu is a mix of classic and contemporary touch. Large choice of wines. The team is simply kind and gentle, quick too, and their smile are a real pleasure. My bf had birthday in two days, not even sure how they did feel it, and suddenly Miss Nina sweetly arrived with a gift dessert for him. What else you might ever look for to enjoy a simple nice L dinner time?

Saturday lunch was fabulous for food and service. we started with sourdough bread with whipped butter and beef dripping...so simple and yet so scrumptious! we then had the gnocchi and pork belly plus triple cooked chips. everything 5*. a real shame for the atmosphere: every single table around us had a dog. I love them, but not having three dogs poking around me while enjoying a meal. also, it gets very loud, so all in all not the best place for a date

Quite a lovely dining experience with the Pig and Butcher. Scotch egg is as good as claimed and the lamb shoulder Sunday roast was perfection. Each of the components was seasoned perfectly and the lamb was fall off the bone. The sticky toffee pudding was on the saltier side but still quite wonderful.

I liked the atmosphere the place is intimate and feels warm. The food was good, tasted the fish Pollock. Some of the main dishes sizes felt small for someone hungry (except the beef for two) but the food was good.

Staff were really lovely and accommodated my allergies with ease. Pork was absolutely unreal!

Easily the best roast dinner available in London. Homely, relaxed and fantastic service. Porchetta is a must if you get there before it runs out! Would happily visit every Sunday. Staff a super friendly and knowledgeable towards the menu that changes daily. Seasonal ingredients brought out in their finest form.

Have been to the Pig and Butcher multiple times now and this time was the biggest disappointment. The previous times I went for a roast and the lamb was somewhat dry, which was surprising given the hype of the place. Went again yesterday with a group and yet again the roast was mediocre. Then on top of that got food poisoning. Would recommend other roasts in London over going here, as I will not be going back or recommending to friends.

You’ll be told to leave your table repeatedly by the staff. You can say it upfront and then remind once nearer the time. No need to pressure every few minutes.

The atmosphere was nice and comfortable. The food was delicious and the people were friendly. I ordered venison for main menu and 3 wines + 1 beer. 3 people 121 lbs

As a previous review has mentioned - this is not the place for vegetarians or vegans. I’m neither of these but decided to go for a red onion tart and the lamb. I received a whole onion inside a soggy casing. I wish I had said something at the time. It was ridiculous. The lamb was too bloody for my liking. Service was good and it was a nice place. Just not for me. The bread starter came by SLICE. the stingiest thing I’ve ever seen in a restaurant. I think I’ll stick to the Drapers arms in future.

Simpley the best gastro pub i have been to. The food is a gastronomic delight. It surly deserves a Michelin star.

We chose to spend Christmas Eve here and, while we were a little disappointed that the beef Wellington had sold out, the overall experience was very enjoyable. Our starters arrived promptly, though there was a bit of a wait for our main courses. This meant we were moved to the bar by the time we were ready for dessert. Despite this slight hiccup, the staff were all excellent, and the food itself was fantastic—we particularly loved the scotch eggs and chips. We'll definitely be back.

Pedimos una mesa tranquila, pero estábamos rodeados de una fiesta de oficina y un cumpleaños. El servicio fue promedio. Los huevos escoceses son recomendables, pero el entrante de cangrejo a £ 14 era muy ordinario. La otra comida era buena, pero no justificaba una factura de £ 450 por 7 . Si quieres una fiesta y no estás interesado en lo que dice la persona opuesta a ti entonces este puede ser un lugar adecuado.

Went in for a drink on Friday evening about 7. No where to sit due to reservations. Was shooed out to stand in the rain by the outside seating. Very unfriendly management. Happy to take my money for beer, but doesn't want me inside making the place look untidy. Gentrification at its worst. Would avoid

I’m just speechless about the food. My partner and I are both vegans and we called the pub ahead of our Christmas lunch with friends, to make sure they had vegan options and they reassured us saying they always do but they didn’t know which options since menu changes daily. We check the menu upon arrival, the only vegan “main” was an Onion tart. Sounds fair enough, we order two. I couldn’t believe my eyes when they brought us a whole red onion on a plate. I’m not even kidding. £20, I repeat-£20- for a whole red onion, served wrapped in 1cm pastry. This felt really insulting. I’m aware that if I’m going to eat in a pub called “the pig and butcher” I’m surely not expecting half of the menu to be veggie and I know it’s going to be heavily catered for meat eaters. But I’d rather be told that they just won’t cater for vegan at all, instead of being served A FREAKIN ONION for £20. Overall, with drinks and half (shared) dessert, we paid more than £60 each. I have eaten in tons of pubs in London and always found either a vegan burger or a vegan roast, or a proper filling tart/quiche. It’s not much to ask for one proper vegan option out of 20/25 options in 2024. To all vegans out there, please don’t bother. Absolutely shameful For The passive aggressive management: your reply to Daniele shows how you rightfully deserved these reviews. You suggested that we told you right away that we were unhappy with our lunch: did you really need a feedback on serving a £20 onion? It’s pretty intuitive that it’s not a suitable meal. Also, we would have gladly provided a feedback if only we received a decent service. But the service was rushed, careless and no one even bothered checking if we enjoyed it or not. And you being aggressive suggesting that we go to Tofu Vegan instead, we will surely do, as we do on a weekly basis, where £20 give you an actual meal, you enjoy your onion. And believe it or not, the other 1 star reviews were not our friends, just other several customers unhappy paying a £20 horrible onion, same as most recent reviews!

Terrible Service. Spoke to a member of staff and the owner and and they were incredibly rude. Will never go to any of his establishments!

Service here is awful. Front of house are rude and abrupt and the owner is stuck up and has absolutely no sense of providing hospitality. I challenged the rudeness at the time and was met with yet more rudeness! As you can see from some of the shockingly rude replies on Google to people's genuine experiences of the restaurant, the owner is arrogant, rude and cannot accept any degree of criticism.

A great neighborhood gastro pub - the pork belly is superb, the Scottish egg is perfection, the Hake was flavorful and the steak was beautifuly cooked and the green peppercorn sauce was especially tasty. Add to that the welcoming and accomodating staff and it becomes pretty perfect.

Incredible atmosphere, paced service and incredible Sunday Roast. Would 100% recommend a visit. But definitely book ahead, it was very busy on the Sunday evening when we visited!

We really wanted to love The Pig and Butcher, but unfortunately, the experience fell far short of expectations in several areas. While the starters (scallops and mussels) were excellent, the mains and sides left a lot to be desired. Of the three pork dishes we ordered, one was served cold, and all three were overcooked and tough. The halibut, which should have been a great piece of fish priced at nearly £40, was also overcooked and served on a cold plate, which meant the accompanying bisque lost its warmth within minutes. The sides (sprouts and potatoes) were cold, lacked any flavour, and were left uneaten. Service throughout the meal felt distant and indifferent, which didn’t help the overall experience. Adding to this, a particularly loud and obnoxious group in the main restaurant made it difficult for our party to enjoy our meal or even hold a basic conversation without raising our voices. While this wasn’t directly the fault of the staff, some level of intervention or management would have been appreciated given its clear impact on surrounding tables. To their credit, the maître d’ did remove the cost of the pork and a round of drinks, and we also opted to have service removed. Despite this, it still came out over £50 per head after the discounts — a steep price for an experience that ultimately I'd rather have not spent there. Would try again given the promise clearly on show with the cookery and setting, but this was a pretty grim showing from the team.

Not the best value for vegetarian food... £21 for an undercooked onion tarte tatin the size of my fist with a few salad leaves. A glass of gavi for £12. Certainly won't be back, but I hope it is better for meat eaters.

We went to the pig and butcher for our annual Christmas lunch as a couple but were pretty disappointed. We’d been for a roast before and really enjoyed it so we thought we’d come for lunch on a Saturday. Service was fine - the gentleman serving us was nice but very busy with big Christmas parties around us so we did feel a bit forgotten about, though not his fault. Food wise we ordered the hake and the tart tatin. Hake was nice but was so disappointed with the tart. It was just a whole red onion perched on top of a tiny bit of pastry - really flavourless and difficult to eat. I thought charging £20 for that was pretty ridiculous. Dessert (lemon posset and walnut cake) was nice so that saved the experience a bit but unfortunately we won’t be back next year.

This has been my worst lunch ever. never in my life i paid £20 (plus service charge) for a meal that turned out to be a whole onion served on a plate with nothing else (unless you count half spoon of pure). Not sure if that’s a way to make vegetarians or vegans feel unwelcome or to make fun of them, but I just wish i got my £60 back. Brussel sprouts also were tastless, undercooked, but nothing compares to the disgraceful onion “tart”.

As someone who doesn't eat meat, the Pig and Butcher obviously wouldn't be my first choice of restaurant, but my team at work chose to have our team Christmas lunch there. The main course for the vegetarians among us was an onion. A roasted whole red onion. Placed on top of some overworked and undercooked pastry. Was it meant to represent or be reminiscent of a pie? It's not clear. The pastry appeared to be offcuts from the meat pie served to the rest of the party. This offering was at the same price as everyone else's meal - around £60. That's about £59 pure profit in terms of ingredients. Apparently the dessert was good, but unfortunately having taken more than 1.5 hours to arrive I didn't have enough time to try it as I needed to return to the office. I wonder if the person who designed this menu knows any vegetarians who in future could give them some guidance on whether a whole onion is a suitable choice and of comparable value to the meat options. Failing that, if they don't know any vegetarians, they could ask another human being as a proxy; or perhaps think about whether they'd like to visit a restaurant and pay over 100 times the price of an onion for eating an onion in a warm building.

A little off the beaten track but well worth a visit. Food is excellent, if you're a meat lover, this is definitely the place for you. The steak and the pork belly are fantastic. The scotch egg for starter, can't beat it.

They only have sunday roast on sundays. The waitress said it in a little of a rude way. Apart from this, the service and the food was extremely good.

My partner and I came here in December for Sunday lunch. I have to say it was extremely good. We had to change the booking time a few times due to issues with the trains. The staff were very understanding and helpful with this which was good for them as it was very busy. We had the tomato and coriander soup to start, sadly this wasn’t that great in my opinion. It lacked flavour and it was was very thin and lacked body. We both left the soup. We had also seen the scotch egg on a TikTok review so we tried one of those. This was amazing, full of flavour, and a runny yolk with mustard mayo really was a very good dish. For our main we had the beef and lamb. The beef was cooked perfectly medium rare and you get two thick slices. The lamb was cooked equally as well. It literally fell apart when touched with a fork. The roast potatoes were off the scale and the veg was all cooked perfectly. It really was a great experience and we will definitely be back again. It’s good value for money for what you get.

Wanted to try this place for a while as I have been hearing great things from friends and I was not disappointed. We ended up having the sourdough bread, the hake fish and pork belly as well as 2 glasses of champagne. All was great! The atmosphere is also amazing. It even has a more secluded upstairs area which i didn’t realise until i got seated there.

I made a reservation, but they gave me a seat in front of the door, which wasn't great. There is a place behind the seats to organize things, so the servers keep putting things in and making a fuss. Everyone is friendly because there is a service charge. In particular, the server in charge was really friendly. I didn't think it was because of the service charge, but it was nice that they were friendly. ㅠ I ate scotch eggs, Sunday roast sirloin, and pork, but no... wasn't it a meat restaurant... ㅂㄹ...... The amount is huge. The majority were local people, and they felt and felt that emotion well...

Delicious Sunday Roast! The potatoes were not as nice, but the rest was beautifully cooked! The Cauliflower cheese was super delicious, atmosphere is lovely as well!

The pork belly and mash was delicious but my partners cod dish wasn’t as tasty unfortunately. We were also disappointed with the portion size considering how expensive these dishes were.

Things started to go downhill when we ended up waiting over an hour for our main course. We were told there was a backlog in the kitchen and would need to wait a further 15-20 minutes (1hr 15mins in total). We were offered bar snacks to help fill a gap but these, unfortunately, arrived at the same time as our main meal 15 minutes later!) To compensate for the delay, we were offered dessert on the house. Unfortunately, one of these arrived cold so had to be sent back. My advice would be to not overstretch the amount of tables and covers as the kitchen and waiting staff clearly cannot cope. Service wasn’t great and the venue was too cramped and noisy leaving waitering staff not hearing or being heard. The icing on the cake was when the bill arrived. My wife asked for the bill, therefore should be handed the bill. They passed it to the only male at the table instead. Not acceptable service.

Typical English pub with excellent traditional dishes. Rustic, warm and welcoming place. Very kind staff. Excellent beer. Average prices. Advised!

This place should have a Michelin Star. Wonderful food. Amazing staff. Great atmosphere.

Would recommend anyone to come here!! The service was amazing, special kudos to the manager! Both the food and wine selection were also outstanding. Just an overall great experience!

Our second visit and we were just as impressed as on our first visit! Our new favourite place! Food is excellent and staff are friendly, welcoming and attentive.

Fantastic experience at this venue. Food was exquisite and the wine recommendations were spot on. The management were attentive, but allowed a personal and intimate atmosphere, can't recommend highly enough!!!
