The Picnic Box in South Lakeland

We have been to the picnic box on many occasions now, every time we visit Ambleside! We normally buy jacket potatoes and the home-made fillings are amazing both in quantity and quality. The overall price of the food makes this an extremely good value lunch. We will continue to use this as as our go to lunch when in Ambleside

Lovely baguettes, we took with us out walking and were perfect to keep us going until dinner time. Soft baguette, plenty of filling with good quality ingredients

We came here to get lunch for our long lake walk, I had the coronation sandwich with salad and it was DELICIOUS! and the price of everything is fantastic, not like any other sandwich shop charging so much money for so little. Highly recommend going here for lunch, snacks and breakfast.

A good bacon roll at a sensible price, it makes you wonder why some (Brambles in Chapel Stile for example) are charging a pound more for a vastly inferior one.

I highly reccommend this sandwich shop. The staffs are lovely and the sandwiches are delicious. Chicken pesto and tomato panini is I liked the most.

No smiles and little eye contact for me or other customers. Sandwich was ok. The chap who made it never smiled once. I’ll give it a miss. First and last time.

We came up with some friends and where going walking , early and found this lovely sandwich shop , well they have everything was hard to choose what to have . The sandwiches are all made to order which is fab , the staff are all so friendly and happy to make you your choice of sandwich. We got are sandwiches and few cakes amazing place . Best sandwich shop better than greggs

We managed to get homemade cumberland sausage rolls, fresh out the oven on Thursday morning. Just to add all sorts of other homemade treats were available too, plus we got our packed lunch to go. Perfect for early raisers. Given the opportunity, would stop by again.

In Ambleside for the weekend and visited this Local shop. To say we aren’t a fussy family is a massive understatement having 3 sprogs that don’t know they’re born. Nothing was too much trouble to satisfy my clan. The staff were lovely and freshly made our sandwiches to order. Home made rocky road and shortbread for dessert. 2 lovely ladies George and Dan, yes I know there boys names, or are they, served with a smile and the Waterfall walk was epic. Be back again next time in Lakes

Omg just the best club sandwich. My partner had a beef onion and horseradish pannini DELICIOUS. The lady and gentleman serving were very attentive and funny. Web feel like we have found a real gem of a sandwich shop. We'll done you guys

Go here quite a lot and never had complaints regarding staff of the food. But my previous visit I was served by a lady with brown hair, very rude and made it feel like you were interrupting her day by ordering food, also made to feel stupid in front of a shop full, not a pleasant experience at all.

Nice staff, great food and good value. Plenty of choice to take away. Popular with locals as well as tourists.

Lacks basic hygiene and food safety - as I was being served at the counter, a Second Lady came in from outside, walked behind the counter, started serving- no hand washing 😳 then proceeded into the kitchen onto the food/ sandwich preparation area and again no hand washing - no food wear was work, all outdoor clothing still on and disregard for hygiene - I threw my sandwich away

Terrible. Worst place I have eaten from. Asked for a bacon and soft egg. Egg was like rubber and couldn't even cut the bacon.

Friendly staff and a great range of sandwiches all made freshly to order. Generous helpings of fillings and all at a very reasonable price.

Very disappointed with my ham and cheese panini. Ham salty and fatty, cheese was in lumps that hadn't even melted. It was more like a bad ham n cheese sandwich, thats why I ordered a panini for the melted stringy cheese!! OK it didn't cost the earth but next time I will go elsewhere and pay that bit more and feel satisfied.

Well what can I say - been coming to Ambleside and here for nearly 18 years at least two/three times a year. Have sandwiches, cakes, soup, homemade pasties and sausage rolls. Not once have we been disappointed. Always great produce, fresh and plentiful with fab...

The staff were pretty rude, almost felt you were interrupting their day when you came in. The cheese was rubbish plastic slices and the ham was so fatty we ended up binning the lot. Sorry to be harsh but it wasn’t the best experience.

Popped in for a few sandwiches to take up to Wansfell Pike and very pleased. Great choices and the food is great quality, and you can customize as you like, and super affordable. Came back to stock up for the train ride home.

I ordered Panini with mozzarella, pesto and tomato and chocolate milkshake. Food was tasty and freshly made. Affordable prices: panini £3, milkshake £2.25. I recommend this place.

The proverbial sandwich We moved to the local area 3 years ago and this place always would always get 5 stars from us, the bf was always sneaking in to get a snack.What happened today guys? Cheap bread, no TLC and pre packaged meat thrown in for filling with poor looking salad.2 sandwiches and a sausage roll that was not on par with the usual quality, if we wanted mass produced food we would of gone to tesco for half the price.The ginger beer was nice but it was 2 days off it’s best before, £8 is perfectly reasonable for the quality you normally produce so please get it back to that.

This is my “go to” place for sandwiches whenever I’m in Ambleside. Freshly made, tasty and excellent value. Good choice of sandwich fillings.

Fui al Picnicbox por primera vez, a pesar de que hemos estado yendo a Ambleside durante años.Tuve un sabroso bap de queso, era una buena porción, muy sabroso y con una muy buena relación calidad-precio.Mi marido tenía un bap de pollo, de nuevo lleno de pollo y dijo que estaba delicioso. También tenía un rollo de salchicha, eran 6. 40 para todos y muy satisfactorio después de hacer una caminata de 9 millas.Definitivamente volveremos, vale la pena una visita.

Siempre he llamado aquí, cuando en Ambleside, para un almuerzo para llevar. Stopped here this morning before heading to Coniston. Absolutely delicious breakfast sandwiches and hot chocolate. Owners/staff were lovely, nothing too much trouble and brilliant value. A pre walk must go from now on.

Very good sandwiches and tray bakes. The portions are generous, and a great value. There is no seating, but there are ample spots in Ambleside to have your picnic. A definite must for all walkers!

If you’re wanting a sandwich to take with you on a walk, bypass the supermarkets and Greggs and go to this place. Excellent sandwiches and pastries etc, we had chicken and sweet corn in mayo and the amount of chicken breast in the sandwich was amazing.

We ordered lunch for 6 people. The prices for the sandwiches were listed around 3 GBP per sandwich. But when bill came we were charged around 8 GBP per sandwich. There were a lot of taxes added and the receipt was very confusing that how much extra for a given sandwich was added to the listed price. Our experience in UK has been that listed prices already included VAT. But we were duped in seeing the listed prices and what was the final bill. Furthermore the guy taking our order got flustered and started acting rude. Seems like he was having hard time handling a group of six people together (it is a tourist town and it is expected that there will be group of tourist coming in for food). The lady on the other hand was extremely nice and made up more than the rudeness shown by this guy. Sandwiches were great. Hope this shop lists the full price including taxes so that we dont feel cheated.

Simplemente fantástico. Como local, he estado viniendo a la Picnic Box durante años. Nunca me ha decepcionado. Baguettes masivas a precios fantásticos. . . Más barato que la basura Tesco preenvasada al otro lado de la carretera. No tengo idea de cómo obtienen ganancias ya que parece que obtienes tanto en ellas.Personal brillante que hace que su sarnie a la orden. Sigan con el buen trabajo :)

My partner and I always try and support local businesses. Don’t go to Greggs instead go to this great little take away cafe. We bought 2 baguettes and a coffee and some other bits to take on a walk with us. The baguettes were good and reasonably priced. The coffee is put in compostable cups with lids made from plant matter. Looks like plastic but isn’t. The cutlery the same, no plastic. I was really impressed by this. The two ladies that served me were lovely too.

I had a toasted panini. There is a huge choice on the menu but I wanted something cooked. It was very long, but in terms of texture and taste just okay, we were expecting more after reading the rave reviews.

We were recommended to go there to get food for the train home. Never seen such a selection of sandwiches and such great value.Teh two ladies were very helpful and the sandwiches were very good

We were told about this place by a couple we got chatting to on a walk on the fells so we called in the next day and the next day and the next after that. If you want great value sandwiches that don't scrimp on fillings, taste great, a large choice, flapjacks, tiffin etc, great coffee (in a sustainable cup) and a friendly service then i doubt you'll be disappointed at this place.

We enjoyed a trip, on the boat to Ambleside, and found The Picnic Box again. What a little gem. A good selection of hot & cold snacks. As for their homemade flapjacks.....WOW!!! Here’s to our next visit!!!

Lovely fresh sandwiches,made to order by friendly helpful staff. They even have a vegan crumble! Used this little gem of a shop all week, to supply our lunches before going out walking. Very reasonable prices, highly recommend.

Really friendly with a great range of fillings - especially vegetarian. Great value with big sandwiches and baguettes, great for a walkers lunch. I had a roasted butternut squash sandwich with tomato and apple chutney.

Title says it all. Will definitely return. Enjoyed lovely sandwiches at Loughrigg Tarn. What a breath of fresh air after the usual tourist rip offs - this is anything but. Wonderful find.

Can't fault them for friendliness and helpfulness. 26 lunches ready and waiting for all to walk with. Food excellent and choices very good. Favourite were amazing and loved the pork pie! Highly recommend and will use whenever in Ambleside.

Compared to the meal deals from the chain stores / shops this sandwich shop is in another league, and if your going to spend the day on the fells you should give this a try.

Apart from the fact it was just up the road from where we were staying, The Picnic Box became our go to for our packed lunches.small in size it may be but don't let that fool you.The service & value for money are second to none.The packed lunch was amazing value.A sandwich or bap or baguette of your choice with plenty of filings to choose from plus a bag of crisps,bottle of water,piece of fruit & of course a piece of Kendall Mint Cake all for just £5.95! The ladies in the shop are lovely & we always left with a smile on our faces.If you are ever in Ambleside & about to go on a hike then please visit, actually just go see them anyway.

Visited here based on TA reviews even though it was raining and it would be a wet Picnic! The homemade sausage rolls (with bacon and mustard) were delicious as were the paninis. Great value and delicious food- I only wish I lived a lot closer!!

We visited after reading other reviews & so glad we did. Don’t be put off by it not being well known name & small. We had 4 walkers specials, large baguettes, halved with prawns & coronation chicken & chicken & sweetcorn. Bananas & apple, crisps, lovely homemade traybake, kendal mint cake & bottles of water. All prepared whilst waiting. All for £5.95!! brown paper bags to carry. The traybakes were delicious, we had tiffin (OH) said best he’d had, & caramel shortbread. The couple serving were so friendly. Will definitely visit again.

Having visited Ambleside we popped into this little sandwich shop for a bite to eat. The sandwiches were delicious and made to order. The prices were very good and the staff made sure we got exactly what we ordered. A little gem of a shop that deserves a good review.

We came here for each day we stayed in the Lakes for sandwiches to take on our walks. There is such a great choice of fillings and you can add whatever else you’d like to them anyway.

Second visit to this fantastic sandwich bar. The lady running this place is always cheerful and friendly (unlike some of the other places in town). Great food, locally baked pies and pasties and cakes. Cannot recommend this place highly enough

This place is a must if your off on the hills. They do a great deal for walkers that will fuel your ascent and make your day that bit more enjoyable

......stayed overnight in Ambleside and was going fell walking the next day. Got talking in the pub and this was recommended. Packed lunch of sandwich (of your choice), crisps, piece of fruit, piece of tray bake cake, bar of Kendal mint cake and bottle of water....

Well priced good quality sandwiches. Ambleside like most places in the lakes can be expensive to eat, this place is top quality and very well priced. Give it a try you wont be disappointed.

Always pop into here for sandwiches before a long walk our favourites being smoked salmon with cream cheese in brown baguette. All sandwiches and salads are freshly prepared while you wait.

Have used the picnic box many times on our Lakes trips. Always prompt service, great food and at reasonable cost. If you are climbing a mountain, pop in, get your meal wrapped in advance and enjoy it at the peak. Clean environmnet, good value and happy staff. Exacty what is needed.

The landlady at Ambolesi lodge recommended this little gem and we bought our walking pack up there each day of our stay! Fabulous quality, great value and we really appreciated our Walkers Picnic when out on the fells in November!

Went to Ambleside a couple of weeks ago on a Sunday. Thought we could get a sandwich from Greggs like on a previous visit. Didn't know Greggs was shut on a Sunday.

This sandwich shop offers a wide range of freshly prepared sandwiches , rolls or baguettes. Plenty of filling and very tasty, drinks , cakes and crisps also available, reasonably priced.

Only recently discovered this place and wish I'd started coming here sooner. Great hot food and great prices. Definitely would recommend if you're visiting Ambleside and need food for a day out on the fells.

We popped in on our second visit to Ambleside. I ordered a beef salad baguette and a pork salad baguette along with 2 sausage rolls, it came to £6.70, which was very reasonable. The baguettes were a good size and had lettuce, tomato and cucumber inside, I have given only four stars as I was disappointed that the pork was out of a packet and not proper meat off a joint....as I thought it would have been.

El club de la baguette es sin duda mi favorito bocata rápido allí. Muy abundante y de gran calidad con excelentes precios. El personal es la mejor clase de gente siempre amable y alegre.

We bought sandwiches before going for a days hiking on the fells. The choice is really good and the beef and coleslaw a favourite. Sandwiches are double wrapped which is helpful. Good value too. Recommended.

The generous fillings on my clingfilm wrapped, paper bagged sandwiches were the envy of my fellow walkers who thought I'd made them at home!Service was quick and friendly and prices were extremely reasonable

Popped in for lunch on the go. Friendly service, the carrot and coriander soup was homemade and tasted delicious. Recommend the sausage roll with mustard and bacon- not to be missed!

Love it here, i always peruse the ample menu but usually end up getting my fave on a granary baguette. Good value and really genuine friendly staff.

If you are hungry look no further the baguettes come in a choice of hot or cold fillings and are made fresh to order.

We came in and were greeted by a very nice woman. My boyfriend and I both ordered the special which comes with your choice of sandwich, crisps, drink, cake, fruit and a Kendal mint cake. We both were only able to finish half of our sandwiches and crisps. He ordered the hot bacon and brie, which was fantastic. I ordered the cold ham and cheese, which was equally as pleasant. The homemade cakes are great! 2 sandwiches and 2 of everything else was only £12.20. Couldn't recommend this place enough.

Despite having been regular visitors to the Lakes for many years, we had never used The Picnic Box before until our recent trip to Ambleside in November. I called in early for some lunch to take with us on a hike up Steel Fell.The chap serving was very friendly, and I ordered a baguette with ham and cheese. It was made up from scratch very quickly. I also ordered a flapjack, as they looked really tempting on the counter.The food was excellent, and still tasted super-fresh some hours later out on the hill. The gooey, sticky flapjack was exceptional.A great first stop-off at this excellent little sandwich shop, and we will definitely use The Picnic Box again for a take-out lunch on future visits.

Best baguettes in town. hot fillings are especially good! always a weekend treat! I recommend chicken bacon and cheese in a roll
