This was about the 6th or 7th time we’ve eaten here. Since Jonathan took over, first the menu and now the whole place, transforming it to The Black Rabbit, it has been reliably excellent for dinner of an evening. They seem to use local produce, all tasty. Plus, the staff are all friendly and attentive. The menu is less fussy than Tommy Heaney and the place is both way less up itself while still being a quality night out. I really wish Jonathan all the best with the place and really believe he it his team and their offering have what it takes to succeed.

We had a birthday lunch there on the 8th July for my mother's 65 Birthday. Even though there were 17 of us, the meal and service were faultless, from starter to the coffee. Nothing was too much trouble for the girls waiting and the chef even came to chat to us. The cauliflower starter was a clear winner and I could've drunk the gravy out of a glass such was the depth of flavour. Good family run places of this quality are few and far between and I genuinely hope The Black Rabbit gets the support it deserves. We look forward to their taster menu coming out.

We decided to go out last minute and try this local restaurant having heard good things about it. I am pleased to say it didn’t disappoint. The restaurant is attached to a traditional style pub dating back approximately 400 years but there is nothing traditional about the restaurant. Modern almost wine bar feel, good food, good wine and good service. Couldn’t wish for more from a restaurant so close to home.

Travelled from Swansea to meet friends for a catch up. We had seen previous reviews and we thought it would be a good venue to try. It's an old pub /restaurant with a lot of character but that's about the best thing I can say about it. I had a 56 day matured rump steak and pink peppercorn sauce. The steak was chewy with not a lot of flavour and the peppercorn sauce was a bit salty with no peppercorns in it and not peppery, the chips were the best part of the meal. There was also a truffle flavoured bearnaise sauce but it smelt and tasted chemically. My wife and one other had the gin battered salmon, both were overcooked and dry. Our other friend had the hake with a cassoulet and squid which tasted OK but the portion of hake was small. The food was eaten simply because we were all hungry. When asked at the end if the food was good we said it wasn't and said what was wrong but nobody came back to apologise. We will certainly not be coming back and would not recommend it to anybody else.

We met with friends here and as it was my suggestion after reading various reviews I am really disappointed. Our food was mediocre at best and extremely overpriced. Two of us ordered the gin battered salmon and it's not an exaggeration to say our salmon was a 2inch square almost like a normal size fillet of salmon had been cut into 3 portions, it was also over cooked. As we'd waited for some time for our food we ate and chatted but when the waitress came to clear the plate and uttered the words "Was everything ok with your food" I told her the plates were clean because we were very hungry and the portions were ridiculously small plus the salmon had been overcooked, she said she would pass the comments onto the kitchen and I was hoping it would drive a conversation between us and the 'kitchen' definitely not looking for reductions on bill or free

Went to the pickled radish today for lunch with family for the first time, all I can say is why have I never heard of this before!! Beautiful place from the moment you walk in. Menu is not huge but must say everything sounds so good it was hard to decide what to have but what we did all choose did not disappoint, probably the nicest meal I've eaten out in a long time, maybe even ever and I enjoy going to different places for meals. Portions are really good but the taste is what makes it so special, everything is full of flavour and so nicely presented and all freshly made. Already booked to go for Sunday lunch safe to say I think the pickled radish will become somewhere we definitely go again and i can't wait.

We came here last year for our works christmas lunch and it was great. So we decided to go again this year. What a change . To start with it was freezing cold there and it only warmed up marginally before we left. The table wasn't laid for enough people and it didn't look a bit festive. Starters were served and they were fine but when our main came it was cold. When the plates were collected the waitress dropped a knife sending a lump of potato and gravy onto the table and the knife fell onto my colleagues trousers and onto the floor. There was no apology and she didn't come to clean the mess up. She came to give us spoons for dessert and she gave sime of us soup spoons. The dessert was delicious but we never warmed up the whole time we were there. I kept my coat on the whole time. The waitress was odd. She told us she was feeling rough from last night as she had drank too much. Not keen to go back

No more than 2 people can fit in toilets at 1 time to small...the staff dint really now anything about what they were serving. ..basic understanding of the food you serve is a must even.if your new...the food I had crab and cranberry fish cakes..they were small balls. . but very tasty.. the dish needed the sause in a pot not dribbled on plate more sause please..2 balls looked odd on a plate try three next time. .lol...mains was a turkey diner ..which had a lot of meat and was very tasty. .gravy was lovely to. ..not much veg with it at all..very disappointed. .my friend had the gammon wich was really dry ..same with veg very little but tasty. .that did come with side oder of coliflower cheese .which was really runny and burnt.... did not try any puddings. .coffee was nice.. As soon as my mum arrived (table booked for 19:30)she was accosted by a woman (presumably the owner) asking for us to leave a trip advisor review. There were 6 of us including a 5 year old and 12 year old. When asked if there was a children's menu or smaller portions the woman promised us she was very accommodating and would arrange something with the chef. We were rushed into ordering our mains before seeing the drinks menu. We asked for the olives and the woman said we should have the cornbread as well (which nobody wanted) despite our objections she insisted that we had it and so it came 5 minutes later as a trio with another bread that again we didn't ask for. When ordering our mains the woman wouldn't let the 12 year old have the 'child option' which we were promised and instead tried to talk her into having a meal that she did not like the sound of. My mum then asked a simple question about one of the sauces which accompanied the salmon only to be spoken to very rudely and with an awful attitude. I left the table because I felt incredibly anxious as there was an awful atmosphere which made us all feel like we had done something wrong. When I returned from the bathroom she tried to take my drinks order but I still hadn't seen the menu. When I asked for the wine list she sounded like she was annoyed and said that she had brought it to the table but I wasn't there. I explained that I was in the bathroom and asked if I could please see it now. She stormed away and threw up her hands which was visibly uncomfortable especially in such a small restaurant. The woman was in no way accommodating and was incredibly rude with an awful attitude. My partner asked for two orange juices for his children (nothing special and the restaurant was joined with a pub) yet she made it very difficult. This experience led me to have a panic attack which I rarely have in public. I left the restaurant crying as the woman made me feel as if I was such a burden. My partner was told we would have to pay for the starters (of which out of the three of them we were made to pay for we only ordered the one - olives) this came to £19.My family then left feeling very unwelcome and the woman was completely oblivious and did not offer to remedy the situation in any way. My family are well accustomed to fine dining and this was so far removed from the concept that it is untrue. Best £19 spent - to leave promptly with barely a morsel passing our lips.

Decided to give it a try as had heard good things and glad we did. The food was superb and the pub joined to it is very quaint with an open fire. Had Sunday lunch which was tasty and very filling as you get big portions. Good variety to choose from. The starter was amazing can't compliment the chef enough. Will definitely be calling again, it is pricey but I thought it was worth it as a treat. Did hear one guest complain about the gravy as it is served on your food so if you like minimal gravy then I suggest you ask for it on the side. No complaints from us though, food place and staff was fab.

We visited tonight and had a great meal. We had a variety of starters and all were really good, particularly the Mac and Cheese. For the mains two of us had the Loaded Radish burger which was huge and really tasty and two had the BBQ trio, the meat in this was really well cooked and tasty and the homemade smoky baked beans were full of flavour. Everything was really good and we had no complaints. The staff were friendly and efficient and the service was good. If you enter the restaurant from the car park at the back you pass the kitchen and can chat to the chefs, the kitchen is not huge but the quality of food that comes out is really good .

We visited the Pickled Radish for a mid week celebration, having heard fabulous reviews on TripAdvisor. We opted for the BBQ special, however it was far from special. The ribs weren't great and had to be returned. We both had the 18hr brisket. You would normally expect this to fall apart. However it didn't and was difficult to cut. It was also stone cold. We took this up with the restaurant manager who swiftly returned these to the kitchen. They came back warm but still hard to cut and inedible. The homemade baked bean(s) were named as such due to there being literally two beans on each plate. Again, we complained and this time we said we will not be paying for our meal as we couldn't finish it. The restaurant manager dealt with our issue and promptly offered us a refund. We sat in the pub lounge and finished our wine in front of a lovely fire. It's a real shame as due to our experience we will not return or recommend this place. I am deeply disappointed by this.

So me and my fiance visited the pickled radish a few months ago at lunchtime and we both thoroughly enjoyed our meal, this prompted me to suggest going again to try the evening menu. I looked online at the evening menu the night before so I could get an idea of what I'd like to eat, menu sounded good. Fast forward to this evening and we were presented with 2 menu's as Wednesday is now bbq night but both menu's were the same, slightly confused I thought no problem, I enjoy bbq style food when it's done properly. I ordered the bbq trio and my fiance ordered the Cuban salmon. Whilst waiting for the food to be served I noticed another table had to send their food back. Our food arrived and I immediately knew it wasn't going to be good, the look on the waitresses face said it all. The bbq trio was advertised as an 18hr smoked brisket, buttermilk chicken and ribs with beans and fries. No beans were served, neither was the yoghurt dip that should have been included with my partners salmon. The brisket most definitely had not been smoked for 18 hours as it was tough as my work boot soles and no smoke ring was evident as should be with properly smoked bbq'd brisket. The ribs were extremely chewy and inedible, again not smoked at all. The buttermilk chicken consisted of one mini fillet that had been deep fried and had a bit of bbq sauce squirted on, something akin to what you get at KFC. The fries were greasy and average at best. My fiance's salmon was more than bland. We complained and said we would pay for the drinks but not the food. Upon walking out through the kitchen as is the layout of this place I overheard the 'chef' (I use the term loosely) say that he agreed it was bland and that another 'chef' said he forgot to marinade the salmon. I honestly felt sorry for the waitress as it was obvious she has had to deal with this very often. After this experience we will never go back. We went to el prado just down the road and had a great meal. Disappointing really as this place is quite quirky in terms of the layout but like I said, I'd never go back.

I visited this restaurant today with my family to celebrate my grandmother's birthday. We were greeted by a polite young man who took us straight to our table. The decor was very rustic and had a cosy feel to it! Upon looking at the menu, we were slightly disappointed to find out that the owner had changed the menu completely and we couldn't have the 3 course offer anymore -that had been previously advertised on their website. However, the head chef was very accommodating and came to discuss the option for our "fussy eaters" - he had great banter which is always a plus, especially as we were being pains! While we waited for our main meals, the head chef presented us with homemade brioche bread and butter - it was delicious! Our meals arrived swiftly and were presented well. We had the 3 styles of burger: katsu cod, the loaded radish and the cheese and bacon and our "fussy eaters" had chicken and chips! I must say all food was delicious! It was also great to be able to walk past the kitchen, where you can note it was spotless - a huge plus! Thank you the pickled radish for having us and putting up with our awkward requests!

Firstly let me say this has previously been my favourite restaurant in the Bridgend area. In truth the service has never been that good but the food has made up for it. Tonight the service was like a motorway service station and the food was similar to McCains oven chips and beans. We were not sure what to expect and thought since mid week the place would likely be quiet. We were wrong. Most of the tables were booked and after experiencing the food we realise why. The waiter could have been a little better trained – two of our table had the soup, and he managed to juggle and drop both the pouring bowls as he tried to get it into the dish. I appreciate they were hot, so maybe a bit of a rethink on how it’s presented would help. We were not asked once if we required further drinks or coffee after the meal – we did go through to the bar after paying only to be told they don’t do coffee, we should have got that at our table, so had to return to order it. While it got to us, eventually, I’d have thought tea/coffee was a good margin generator for any restaurant so really shouldn’t have been so hard to get a cup! Some of the portion sizes are on the small side, and there was no bread or roll offered to accompany the soup. Personally I had the Indian style scallops which were delicious but I’d have liked a little more onion bargee rather than the three strands on onion it was made up of.The good – the presentation & taste. The starters (previous comments aside) and deserts were really good, all tasty and appreciated. The mains varied a little, we ordered extra chips which were welcome for those that had the pork, but we certainly had no complaints on the quality of the food.Overall I’d say it was in need of only small improvements to deliver exceptional food and service, but defiantly a step above the usual pub-grub.

So, this review covers a family opinion based on three visits, two Sunday lunches and one evening meal. Firstly the food, as that's the important bit.... well, it's been consistent and good but beware....you may have to ask for elements of the dish that are not on your plate as the service on each occasion has omitted to deliver some portion/element/addition that's an important constituent. We haven't had a bad dish, but none have been exceptional and at these prices you would expect to be able to report the latter. Deserts are somewhat uninspiring, as good as Costa would be equalising, mains are better, but not top notch, however far from the norm of the brains et al standard menu. Starters are somewhere in between, we haven't had anything mind blowing and on a Sunday do expect to have a very limited selection. Service is the problem. This is faulty towers to the max. It's either full on and in your face or non existent. There aren't too many covers so why on earth they haven't considered the concept of a waiter to an allotted cover patch is beyond me? If there are 5 waiters and a front of house employee you are guaranteed to see them all during your visit.... mostly to be on your case straight after you've finished your course or even, before you've even had a beverage, "are you ready to order..." No! Have you finished "No!" ...... the problem is that nobody has taught them timing! Greet your guests, seat your guests, get drinks for your guests, allow them time to read the menu, discuss amongst themselves, consider options, then take the order, then......after each course allow them breathing time, ....starters need to settle, as do mains (immediate presentation of another menu or would you like a desert is taboo!) do they need any drinks, what about asking if the food was any good? It's all too haphazard. Nobody appears to be in charge, nobody takes ownership, and you're guaranteed to witness numerous waiter faux pauxs on your visit. It could be a brilliant venue but it's not.Management please: greet your guests, treat your guests, give them time, don't be overbearing and a pain in the backside, allocate staff to tables (hi, I'm John and I'll be looking after you tonight!) be swift with the important things and slower to process your customers. Generally, improve the service to match the food quality, and one more serious gripe, give the place a damn good clean.....Looking to come back but only with some serious, real improvements.

We had been fancying a visit here for quite some time and it was so worth it. It's directly next to the Laleston Inn, as in the room next door and the entrance to The Pickled Radish is through their kitchen. Anyway the service was very good, we had to ask our waiter his name as he was so polite and efficient - Vadym. We had starters and three of us had the duck which was delicious and one had the Indian which was scallops and that was lovely too. Two steaks were ordered, chicken and I had the Cod with mussels. Everything was cooked to perfection and yes we all had a taste of each other's. Beautifully presented. Chatted to the co owner who told us about their sister restaurant in Llandaf. Customers started to fill up the place as we were the first ones there at 6.15pm and it was very quiet. Lovely atmosphere towards the end with everyone enjoying delicious food. Couldn't recommend more.

. Poor service ie hurtling up to table whilst we were in discussion and interupting the conversation . Having to tell the servers to please clear away the sauces and condiments left from the main course after they had served our pudding - i wouldnt mind if we were at a cheap cafe or something. Had salmon, sadly tiny and didnt taste very nice. The pudding was exceptionally delicious. My friends had steak which they said was nice. When choosing this we were told we could have "a couple of minutes to decide", but it was said in a pressured way. It wasnt busy. It was clear this last lady wanted us done and gone. I was so disappointed after we had saved to come here for a special occasion.

Visited for the first time after hearing very good reports, and I must say we weren't disappointed. Entering the restaurant via the kitchen and saying hello to the chefs on the way through was a nice touch. We were then showed through to the bar for a drink to review the menu while our table was prepared. The restaurant was relatively busy, but our tendency to eat later meant that most other diners were finishing their meals as we started. But there was a nice relaxed atmosphere in the small restaurant. All our courses were beautifully presented and a lot of thought had clearly gone into the flavour combinations. Not normally one for dessert, I can highly recommend the "key lime" option which was rich but also palate-cleansing, with a ginger beer sorbet that I would happily swim in!Service was polite and attentive, and we were made to feel very welcome. We will definitely be back!

We highly recommend this place if you want to treat yourselves. My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful evening at the pickled radish for a Friday night out. We had booked for 7.30 but weren't seated until just after 8. We didn't mind this at all as we were enjoying a drink in the adjoining Bar. Staff were clearly very busy however they were attentive all evening- Anisha and Vadmir in particular. We stayed for all 3 courses (we rarely do this) as the food was excellent! Great presentation and a clear effort to be creative with the ingredients and flavours. Our only criticism might be that the pork dish was very meat heavy and could've done with a little more veg to lighten it- but that said it was delicious! Great evening- we can't wait to come back for Vadmir's steak night recommendation!

Key lime and salted caramel brownie deserts are amazing. Can't wait to try another special evening menu. Entrance to restaurant is through the car park, need to have a sign showing entry through the kitchen entrance to the restaurant. Chefs and all staff very helpful and friendly.

We had a baby free night so decided to use a voucher we were given for a meal at the Pickled Radish and it just so happened to be the new menu launch night! We both had 3 courses, wine and soft drinks and in total it was £77. I think this represents excellent value for money as the food was superb. The food was very well seasoned and all the extra touches such as a little appetiser whilst waiting for the starter (compliments of the chef) just added to the experience. The servers was extremely polite and friendly and as you walked past the kitchen on the way out, you could see why the food was so good... a full kitchen full of happiness and laughter from the team! They even took my comment about my hibiscus desert sauce being a little too sweet graciously and came back out asking me to try another variation to see if I thought it would be better.A lovely place with a lovely ambiance and would recommend to everyone!

Visited with friends for birthday night out, though they didn't organise a cake or sing for me, gutted!!Service was excellent, very attentive and prompt, good quality, crackling sticks to start were delicious as was the treat from the chef, choux pastry filled with warm, melted cheese. Three of our four steaks were cooked to perfection, hence scoring.Added plus point for me they serve real ale. Give this a try, sure you won't be disappointed.

We booked a Friday night. We arrived on time and were seated. Menus were given and drinks orders taken. The menu has a large steak section and a few other choices. The starters were very good and we all enjoyed. The steaks were good but not great. We all found them a bit small for the price. The deserts were fantastic but expensive at 7 pounds each. The drinks were expensive, I ordered a bottle of white at 33 pounds but it was 41 on the bill as it had a 20 percent charge. This was not explained at the time of ordering. So felt a bit out out. It is an expensive place but the food is good.

We visited with hubbys cousin and her family to sample some real Welsh hospitality and great food. The chef prepared us a some welsh Cawl. Like a soup stew for our starter. Tasty and just right. We went on to have a couple of the different steaks. All tender and delicious. We adjourned to the pub after our meals and soaked up some of the locals stories round the fire. Great atmosphere. Brilliant night out.

We were not aware that this restaurant is basically a " steak house " and I am sure as such is very good. However we did not want steak and found the menu very limited. To the extent that I was actually struggling to make a choice. In fact had we not had a gift voucher I think we would have left & gone elsewhere. Having made our choice, the service was aveage ( I think the young man serving us was relatively new to waiting ) and the food good. In summery I can not actually fault this restaurant, nor would I recommend it or go back. Fine dining prices for pub grub. Certainly not a fine dining experience.

We hadn't sat down when we were asked what we wanted to drink. We ordered drinks and on returning with the drinks we were asked if we were ready to order the food which we did. Two rump steaks, salmon and a chickpea burger. When the burger arrived in a black brioche bun it was somewhat a surprise and did put me off my food to be honest. We had to request steak knives and were asked how many - two steaks were ordered. There was nothing wrong with the food but we felt it was expensive for what we got. Three of our party had finished their food but I was still eating when the waiter arrived and started clearing plates and asked if we wanted desert. I said why would I want desert while I was still eating my main meal. He went away and nobody ever came back so we asked for the bill and left. There was very little atmosphere and it was too cramped. We will not return.

I've been here three or four times now, and I can't criticize the food one bit. Always well cooked and nicely prepared. The one thing I will say is that the menu is quite small, and the food could be considered 'fussy', so if you have picky or very traditional eaters with you, this may not be the place for you.The thing that lets this place down is the patchy service. The staff are always polite and helpful, very nice indeed, it's just that there often isn't enough of them! Four of us visited about three weeks ago and we had to wait an overly long time for everything. There was only one lady serving, and she was lovely and very apologetic, but we left without having dessert and an extra round of drinks because everything was taking so long. The food is good, but as restaurant experiences go, it's a long way from the best.

This was our first visit but definitely not our last. Went on a Thursday and had a free glass of wine with the amazing steak. One of us had rump and the other had sirloin and both were delicious and beautifully cooked. Sides are well worth the money and the puddings were pure heaven. Lovely building and ambience.

We were down in Wales just for the Easter weekend and wanted to find somewhere special for dinner on the Saturday night. I researched places before we came and the Pickled Radish won on all counts. We had a quick drink in the pub before - this is definitely a traditional type pub and a very different decor to the restaurant. The restaurant itself is small and cosy with approximately 10 tables in total - meaning each table was well spaced and you could chat easily. The menu is varied and the wine menu was also good. We had a very genuine waiter who really seemed to care about the food he was serving. We had a couple of "graze" items to start - the crackling and cheese pot. Both were delicious. My partner then had rump steak and I had Shepherds pie. The steak was beautifully cooked and so flavoursome - the rosemary rub was perfect. The Shepherds pie was absolutely amazing. The lamb was so succulent and the flavour when mixed with the spiced heritage carrot puree was superb. The lamb lollypop was beautifully cooked and added another interesting element to this dish.We absolutely loved our visit....we eat out in London frequently and this rivals the best. Thank you.

Visited here on the 15-2-17 with my fiancé for steak n wine Wednesday. Was not disappointed at all as the food was spot on fair play. Small restaurant but very well run and the place has loads of character. After our meal we went into the bar area and sat in front of the real open fire and enjoyed the rest of the evening chatting with a few wines.... The only one thing to watch for is don't order wine/drinks from the restaurant as they charge you 20% more and it comes from the same bar. £6 for a glass of wine ! Anyway my score is 9/10 ***** will definitely be back soon.

We were in Maesteg for a visit and thought we’d call into the market but found it had permanently closed 5 months previously. This cafe used to be in the market but is now in a precinct area just outside of it. We both went for the all day breakfast for £4 - great value - bacon, sausage, egg, hash brown, beans or tomatoes, mushrooms and toast as well as a mug of tea or coffee. For an extra £1 you could have had another egg, bacon, sausage, hash brown and a slice of black pudding. The place was clean and tidy and the staff friendly. If we ever return to Maesteg we’d be happy to return here.
