Excellent pub, everything is very reasonably priced food is fantastic and the bar staff are very friendly.

A great man once said "decent boozer". He couldn't be anymore correct. Great ales and a wide selection of lager. Reasonably priced. Toilets are great for hiding in (if you're blind) and if you find yourself in here on a Friday, you have the pleasure of watching at least one bloke pass out on account of their liking of decent ales.

It's a nice pub, well decorated, it wasn't too loud, you could hear your friends even though there was music.

Cracking old school pub, never had food but, the menu looks good. Was in again yesterday, different bar staff than on previous visits, old dear behind the bar seemed to be having a bad day.

Proper place to truly go back in time. It is such a friendly environment to sup a pint. Nothing beats sitting at the actual bar itself next to one of your pals and just talking for the rest of the night. In addition the chicken wings and food in general is stupendous.

Classic, old school Scottish pub. Great atmosphere, decor what you'd expect in a traditional boozer and prices reasonable. Burger buns way too dry, but the burgers still tasty. Could happily spend another afternoon there...🍻

The Pheonix Bar is a Dundee institution. It has a prominent place in the bar industry within the city. The original decor helps to add to the ambience along with the eclectic mix of clientele. Staff within the premises are always friendly and helpful. The food is proper pub grub and the curly fries are a must have. Dogs are also allowed 🐕

This pub has a great selection of real ales and excellent food at good prices - the ganga curly fries were especially good (and as spicy as advertised!). The service was quick and efficient despite the fact that the pub was full up almost from opening time.There was a bit of a shortage of ciders on tap so if that's your tipple you'd have to go with a bottle.Interesting decor and appeared to be nice and clean too. Would definitely come back here if in Dundee again.

Visited this pub 18 years after my last visit and pleased to see it has kept all its charm. Will defo make a point of going again on my next trip.

From the outside, the Phoenix is the archetypical old fashioned Scottish bar, and looks as welcoming as a punch in the face. Please don’t let that put you off however, because the Phoenix is everything a pub should be.This place has a wonderful, traditional pub decor. It also has exceptionally good service and a great atmosphere. You really couldn’t ask for a better pub.

This real old traditional pub never changes, it is just as it was decades ago. A proper, traditional pub with all the stained glass, long bar, booths to sit in, wooden floors. Filled with character. Good selection of Scottish drinks. Very close to the centre of town. Normal bar prices.Well worth a visit for those who enjoy real pubs.

Having visited with friends asked at 7pm Tuesday 30 April to order food. Fat male barman with dark greying hair and beard advised they were busy and no longer serving food. Then proceeded to watch as numerous customers came in afterwards and ordered and were served food. Having come here for lunch for years, worst customer service I’ve ever encountered!

Loved this pub when we visited Dundee - late on a Sunday night the place was hiving with a great atmosphere. Quite oldie worldly and authentic- it works!

The Pheonix is a really down to earth little pub with big portions of tasty pub food. Before going I read some reviews saying the staff were unfriendly but they were nothing of the sort. The service was great and the atmosphere was warm and welcoming, the barman even told me the history of the building and showed me some old photos when I inquired!

Friendly Auld pub , enjoyed ambience and the layout of this wee boozer . The furnishings are nice and old and comfy with the little booths adding to the atmosphere . Good selection of drinks .

A great place for a pint with a good selection of beers and quiet corners for a natter. But you have to be able to get in!!!

A good choice of cask ales. The local brew Mor ticia which was deviously dark and delicious. Authentic original decor in a relaxed earthy environment.

Fui allí el año pasado para un almuerzo de Navidad y el Steak Oie fue increíble. Tan bueno, de hecho, volvimos de nuevo este año y tuvimos el Steak Pie nuevamente. desafortunadamente fue una experiencia totalmente diferente esta vez. El pastel de carne estaba realmente seco, al igual que el enorme pudín de Yorlkshire. Ambos podrían haberlo hecho con un poco de salsa. Nueva sede el año que viene.

Salir a almorzar con mi esposa. Mi esposa pidió goujons de pollo con ajo y una porción de aros de cebolla y para mí una baguette de pollo y tocino y una pinta de papas fritas. La comida llegó después de unos 5 minutos y estaba delicioso. No hay problemas con el servicio, la calidad de la comida o la limpieza. En general una comida agradable, grandes porciones y nos fuimos muy contentos. Sigan trabajando bien el personal de Phoenix. ?

Visitamos el fin de semana, y después de registrarnos con el barman, ¡nos encantó descubrir que este pub ahora admite perros!

A great bar to meet up with friends and have lunch. Good service and good price. It was very busy at 15:00 which may have been due to the Rugby being on TV.

Bad service seems to be the norm in Dundee, I'm actually surprised when I get good service. This place is pretty bad though, bar staff are just oddballs. Food is dire, no atmosphere. Used to be a firm favourite but its best avoided these days.

Barman was rude and unwelcoming. Heard them being the same to some Pepe who clearly weren't local. They also felt dissatisfied.

The food in this bar is first class for pub grub, reasonably priced and presented really well. One of the best bars in Dundee for meals.

Chilli cheese burger, curly fries. Beer beer beer. All good and a must visit pub. Weird that you have to keep going up to pay for drinks - rather just pay everything at the end...

We love this pub. The real ale is very well kept and the range of whisky is good. There’s always plenty of staff on and it’s always busy and buzzing.

I visit Dundee quite often and have been drinking here on and off for 45 years. It's never quiet, not that cheap and only rarely can you get a seat. It's got old dark panels and little cubby holes and big mirrors on the back wall. 45 years ago the place was rough as flip, but so were most of the pubs in Dundee. It did nice pies, but that was it. It was more open so more drinkers could get in. Then it went all Ikea and it was horrible. No character at all. So we didn't go much. After a while it went back to what it is now. Apparently an old style bar was found somewhere, fitted in almost as well as the original, so we still go. So should you.

Visited the Phoenix for lunch and a few pints. busy bar with mix of all ages. Place is clean and has plenty of wee tables and seats. It’s a bit expensive for drink but it’s a decent lager imo. Can be full of students but all good

Nice wee pub but they decide when to close. Friday night and I can’t get served after 11:30 because the staff have decided they want to go to bed early! Online it states 12am but obviously don’t want the custom. Had friends over for the states and was embarrassed not being able to buy a drink. Very poor

Met up for a pre-Christmas Lunch. Hadn't been there for years but is was like time had stood still - cosy but cramped. Fortunately still has a great atmosphere and the Steak Pie was amazing.

Went to this pub on a quite sunday night and met the true soul of this pubs owner and what he seems to feed down to his staff!!!. Been in this pub many times over the years. Have experienced arrogance before from some blond barmaid when i complained about the quality of the real ale i was served. She denounced it as my problem!! Anyway, i forgave that and decided to try it again a few years later. Well, here we go. There was an array of real ales on offer, one of which I had never heard of. So I asked the barman if I could have a taste of this to see if I liked it, before I bought. It was early in the evening and only my second pint. Now, unlike the weatherspoons pub I had just came from and any other establishment I have ever been in he said ' No. You cant have a taste of that.' . I then asked 'why?' . His reply was ' Its company policy!!!'. PATHETIC!!!. Anybody with any business sense doesnt deny a customer from sampling what they are selling in the beer world. It encorages good faith and does help sell certain beers, with a a bit of a positive attitude from staff. NOT HERE I'M AFRAID !. I have read other reviews regarding food too. Same attidude. Just give us your money, and if you dont like it, TOUGH!. needless to say, I left, and felt better for NOT giving them my money and encouraging the arrogant attitude. Dont dare complain in this pub, because you will be IGNORED!. If the owner thinks this is an acceptable way to run a business, nowadays, then he has thrown on the towel and just wants your money, with EXCORBITANT prices to boot. Caveat emptor! (Be aware!)

Have visited this bar often and usually have a meal as food usually good. Disappointed last week when i ordered my usual Chilli Dog and received it cold, bar staff took back to kitchen and gave me the same one again but still cold. Once again back to kitchen and obviously re heated again in Microwave and 3rd time lucky came back hot! Disappointed that i never got fresh meal as the roll i couldn't eat as you can only put food in the microwave so many times. Mentioned to bar staff expecting a refund but was just laughed off! Will go again, but not for the food

Friendly welcome, half of the nook and cranny tables taken when when I arrived. Order food at bar, good selection of drinks. The Guinness was being drank by the half dozen, so I went with a few pints of that. Was alright. Not to be...

I first visited this bar over Forty years ago when I lived in Dundee. It was very much a bar for students since it is so close to the University. I had not been in the bar for a great many years. 18 of us squeezed into the bar mid-afternoon just before Christmas. Although we were just having a few drinks, many people were having meals. The food looked very good. They have a good selection of draft beers on tap. The atmosphere is excellent in this very friendly bar. Even with it being very busy, service was very good.

Popped in on the recommendation of my landlord. Pleasant clean surroundings in a typical old-fashioned bar. Good beer selection though not much in the way of malts. Attentive staff and 'intelligent' clientele.

I love the Phoenix and have been going there for 25 years on and off however recently I was charged £10.30 for a pint of Peroni and Blue Moon. This is Dundee, not an airport bar. Apart from the price this is and always will be a great Dundee pub.

Always loved this pub. Used to go here when I was a student ; you could get pie, chips and beans for 80p in those days. Not much has changed since then; the interior and exterior decor is pretty much the same, the food has been up dated a bit but still holds true to the tradition of decent affordable grub to go well with your pint and the staff are as helpful and friendly as ever. Great atmosphere and easy place to relax in with friends. One of Dundee's gems .

Just had a great lunch at the Phoenix bar. Curly fries and dip are amazing, be warned though, the hot sauce will leave a sting in you mouth. Food is reasonably priced, only complaint would be the price of a can of coke - £1.85, which seems rather steep.

Totally ashamed of the customer service tonight in the Phoenix. A stag party were in having a good time, all they did was start singing a song which everyone joined in with then the barman told them to stop which everyone felt was out if order as it was very happy and no one causing trouble. Then the manager or whoever came into the bar took their drink and poured it down the sink shouting for them to leave. In no way were they causing trouble but bringing some merriment into the place! The Phoenix staff should be ashamed of themselves for the way they handled this and I hope the stag party moved on to a much better establishment to welcome them. Shame on you Phoenix this customer service has put me off ever returning again as did most who were around me agree .

Have been here a few times this year with good friends and the food is always amazing, cooked to order and great quality. My only complaint is it's a a bit cramped, but it is always a busy busy pub and staff are friendly and fun.

great wee pub over road from our hotel...was very busy - a concert was being held later - we ended up eating there (hadnt intended too) and food was great - prices very reasonable....great friendly staff!

Nice selection of beer and cask ales. Bartender was very helpful in selecting both beer and food. Food was tasty and in large portions. Prices were on the lower side of usual pub fare. Ample seating was available. Overall, a very enjoyable and relaxing spot for a pub lunch.

Busy city centre pub, plenty selection of drinks & decent pub grub, was Saturday around teatime placing was very busy great atmosphere

We have popped in here previously for a drink or two, but this time we decided to eat as we fancied a few things on the menu. We ate here the day after bank holiday so it was quiet and our food arrived quickly. I had chilli with a jacket potato which was delicious even though the jacket potato was microwaved. My partner had an onion covered hot dog which was also very tasty. All in all, lovely food but I think the environment could have been cleaner, tables felt sticky and menus covered in what appeared like previously spilt drinks.

Guest ales but they will refuse just a taste as every good pub would think nothing of. Staff blamed the owner for 'the rules'. There are much better real pubs in Dundee, we won't bother with Phoenix again.

Honestly never encountered such a rude patron in all my 46 years. Twice I've been in 3 years and both times the owner has been extremely rude and unwelcoming. Clearly used to his regulars and not interested in new folk. I walked in and looked round for a table as you do and he turned and said to my friend oh is she expecting a table to pop up out of nowhere?!!! Rude.. Then my friend mentioned paying by card and again he was rude as if we should know they don't take cards.. I had cash on me but now wish I hadn't so we should have taken our business else where. I ordered the steak baguette then few minutes later realised it didn't come with chips so we shouted to add chips to a sarcastic response of ', so you wanted a steak baguette AND chips.. Yeh please but how dare I want both was the way I felt. Friend ordered a salad and asked to remove the cucumber and and peppers etc. This again felt like we were inconveniencing him.. Wouldn't ever go here again.. Manners cost nothing.

I am a real ale drinker. I travel all over the Uk and always check out on Google where all the best real ale pubs are before setting off. The phoenix is listed as a real ale pub. When I arrived the pub was relatively busy but only had two hand pumps. I asked the aged barman if one of his beers was a porter, he didnt know. I asked him if it was black, he didnt know. I then asked if I could taste the beer (which is now common practice up and down the country) this time he did know, his response NO. We left. He lost out on business and what could easily have been a good review.

This was my first meal at Dundee legendary pub the Phoenix and I was not disappointed! The delicious smell from the kitchen hits you from the busy Nethergate outside.Huge portions of very tasty pub food at reasonable prices. I had chicken gougons and could not finish my meal due to the portion size!.I have recommended the Phoenix for lunch to lots of friends since going and they have gone along too and enjoyed it.

A nice friendly pub with a busy buzz.It has a good selection of beers, both craft and traditional and is brightly decorated with art on the walls while still retaining the traditional look. I found the staff to be helpful and swift. The prices were inexpensive.They show sports, but not in an overwhelming way. A bar with sports, not a sports bar.It hasn't changed in a long time, and I hope it doesn't.

Wether you are after a drink or some good old fashioned pub grub the phoenix is always a safe bet. Very friendly staff, good selection of drinks and the food is very good. Have always found it to be very reasonably priced and decent sized portions. Can be quite busy at times so if theres a large group might be better to book a table.

Arrived with my girlfriend to have lunch on a Sunday afternoon we thought we would try it out - as soon as we walked in we were asked for ID I don't know why as we were only in for food and it was during the day bearing in mind we are both 22. So we showed our ID then the man behind the bar said we had to leave, we both left in disgust, obviously someone was having a bad day. Would not recommend this place at all if you walk in somewhere for food the least you expect is a hello and a friendly welcome. Will never be back!!

Was in for lunch with friends over the festive period for lunch and drinks , cannot believe how the staff coped in such a busy time , never once can I say we had ask for tables to be cleared any chance they had they were out clearing wiping tables and great banter with the customers keep it up we love it ,food is always fantastic and the Christmas menu was amazing .

Just had a bar lunch in this pub. Havent been there for a few years.Certificates on the wall for Best Pub 2013. So obviously popular until recently. Decor is now too shabby and badly needs a refurb. Drinks not cheap but OK. No lemon slices for a G + T but decent pint of Peroni. Food very greasy and cheeseburger was more sausagemeat than anything else. Main complaint was female in charge. What a bulldog. She only seemed to smile when slagging off customers to bar staff. Everything about this woman was hostile. Her dour manner, lack of courtesy and disinterest in the customers had to be seen to be believed. Dirty plates, cutlery, glasses etc sat on our table for over an hour even though the place was pretty quiet. When they were finally removed the straws, unused cutlery and condiments were left. Didn't dare ask that she wiped the table in case she set about us. Such a pity. It was so much better in the past and deserves to be properly managed again. Won't be back

The Phoenix is deservedly a Dundee institution. Great decor that reminds me of brown cafes in the Netherlands. Superb bar staff. Great drinks selection and tremendous pub food at good prices.
