What a fantastic pub & hotel. We booked 1 night at ‘The Pheasant’ & stayed in the wonderfully spacious ‘Captain Oates’ room which had far-stretching countryside views as well as a comfortable double bed, good free wi-fi, a large flatscreen tv, a spa bath & powerful shower, a safe and a fridge where we could store the fresh milk given to us. On arrival we were greeted by Sue who showed us around and made us feel very welcome as though we visited every day. I would thoroughly recommend the ‘fromage & champagne’ which we had as lunch (a glass of sparkling champagne with 3 French cheeses on a board with crusty bread, butter, chutney, cherries and quince. In the evening we had a fantastic dinner served by the charming Reuben - I had the homemade chicken and ham hock pie with new potatoes and veg while my wife had the excellent poached trout with potatoes and veg all washed down with a nice bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. We finished with an excellent lemon tart with strawberries and Chantilly cream! We had a wholesome “full English” breakfast with orange juice and tea served by the lovely owner, Diana. We will definitely try and visit this gorgeous pub/hotel in the countryside on the Essex/Suffolk border again.

Disappointing meal and high drinks prices. One of our meals was tough and overcooked, but as we waited a while for 4 meals to be served, one by one.... we felt we could not complain, as a newly cooked meal for one would have meant the rest of us would have finished.

We loved our stay here.Perfect for short getaway. We stayed in beautiful accommodation . Very large room, lovely decor, massive bed. Out in the countryside.Parking onsite. Pub was in front so great to have breakfast, and food on site. We could have drinks a stones throw from our room. Diana the owner was so welcoming and friendly. Nothing too much trouble. Evening meals were lovely. My steak was always perfect. Good menu, in cosy atmosphere. We will return.!!!

as friends were visiting and staying here we took a rare visit to at, we add drinks outside which was nice as the weather was with us, and then moved inside for dinner, choices very basic, the food felt like it had been purchased from Lidl and rehashed in the kitchen. rock hard chips burger about 50mm across. the service from the Barmaid was good and knocked of the sweet from the bill when challenged. the place feels like its run on a shoe string, shame as it was the best pub in the area. Sign of the times i suppose!

Genuinely can’t thank the lady who was working behind the bar on Tuesday evening (21/11/2023). Driving from Chelmsford to Belchamp (2 hour journey due to getting lost and traffic). I stopped as my five month old was needing a bottle. The lady behind the bar made me feel at ease after a very stressful journey and like nothing was to much hassle. She provided me with hot water and allowed me to stay and feed my baby. Thank you so much! Lovely lovely staff x

We have just spent 3 very enjoyable nights at The Pheasant in Gestingthorpe. We had a warm welcome, taken to our very nice spacious room. Very nice furnishings, huge bed and a fridge that was actually cold. We ate in the bar each evening and we couldn’t fault the food. Breakfast was particularly scrummy and no extra charge for smoked salmon! Obviously it’s a small pub so only met 3 members of staff but all were friendly, efficient and very helpful. A good place to base ourselves exploring Essex and seeing relatives.

Met up with old friends for dinner last night and it was fabulous!! A beautiful setting, great atmosphere, the two staff that served us were polite, attentive and made us most welcome. My Sea Bass was perfectly cooked, the Tiger Prawns (for just £7.50!) were a good size and perfectly battered! All finished with with a fantastic Rhubarb Crumble. One of my friends had the burger and said it was the "best he'd had in a long time" We've all just finished breakfast, and agree the rooms are stunning, with a view to die for. Breakfast was excellent, bacon and sausages from local butcher were the best! - so we've all booked to come back in 3 months Thank you to the staff for a great stay

We came for dinner but were very disappointed with the so-called Tiger Prawns; they were NOT Tiger Prawns as advertised, they were tiny & not striped or large as real Tiger Prawns. False advertising. They were covered in batter to hide their tiny size. They tasted awful. The Chicken Parmigiano was truly pathetic; a piece of dry chicken the size of a baby rat wrapped in Prosciutto. Utterly tasteless. Sack the 'chef’ immediately before they poison someone. Do not dine here; try Pizza Hut or KFC.

Was told this was a great place to go for a few lively drinks with my friends. My friend ( the stag ) was very rudely told he was not allowed to have a bacardi and Fanta ( his favourite drink ) because it was only for women !! I was very upset at this. When I spoke to the owner about the rude barmaid, she told me that she wasn't interested in my business and I should maybe a few bottles of diamond white down the park was more our level. Horrible place, awful staff, and it smells funny too.

This used to be such a nice restaurant - food prepared with thought and care and a deliciously cozy atmosphere. It's now basically just another pub with pub grub. The small, once cozy restaurant now has hugely out of proportion tables, presumably for massed drinkers, and even on a cold night, the fire is no longer lit and the lighting is perfunctory. What was once quite romantic is now dead. Nice waitress - hence 2 stars

My husband is a Coeliac and is on a gluten-free diet. He had eaten the last of the gluten-free bread with his starter so he couldn’t have any with his cheeseboard. Top marks to the chef for being able to improvise and provide a platter that resembled a ploughman’s lunch, it was superb. The chicken and mushroom pie was sublime. We then had an incredibly comfortable overnight stay with a delicious breakfast before departure (the sausages and bacon were outstanding). We had a really great nights sleep, a very comfortable bed and beautifully appointed room (Captain Oates). Wow, what a fantastic evening was had by all who attended the wine tasting event at the Pheasant, Gestingthorpe on the evening of 3rd September 2019. We were with 10 friends on one of the tables. For a very reasonable inclusive price, guests were able to savour 4 delicious wines and guided through the tasting process by an expert sommelier. In addition to this guests also enjoyed a scrumptious 3 course Italian themed meal prepared by the Pheasant's new Chef Honour, who lived in Italy for twenty years running her own restaurant. The service was smooth and professional, the staff team led by the owner and hostess for the evening, Diana Donoghue, ensured all guests experienced a thoroughly pleasant and satisfying time.. A great atmosphere with much laughter and happy people. It was especially pleasing that the Chef, who clearly is very passionate about her food, came out on completion of service and spoke to all the guests personally. The standard of food was truly excellent and we look forward to enjoying more first class culinary delights on our next visit.

This gem of a pub is stuck in some lovely countryside, and the owners go out of their way to make it a very attractive and comfortable pub to visit. I would highly recommend this pub to anybody wishing to have a nice meal out in lovely surroundings.

What a lovely pub! Set in the stunning countryside away from any hustle and bustle you feel like you are in another world when staying at the Pheasant. A very peaceful yet lively place! The food and service at the pheasant is incredible. The menu was small and simple which oozed class and knowledge of local produce. We were not disappointed with our choices and ate everything we ordered. I had the duck which was perfect and my boyfriend had the special of a whole plaice which was also beautifully cooked! The choice of wines complemented each meal and sitting in the cosy restaurant made us feel super relaxed as we enjoyed our meal!

We selected accommodation at The Pheasant so we could explore the local area and were delighted in the choice. Greeted by the owner who was so lovely and welcoming it just got better from there. The room was beautiful with gorgeous scenery of picturesque farmland out the window. We went for a walk before dinner and then had a lovely pub dinner. My husband has Sea Bass which he really enjoyed and I had Sausages and mash which was great. The highlight was the Sticky Toffee Pudding and I'd recommend it to all! Had a lovely breakfast the next morning and wished we could stay longer! Highly recommended! Photos are from the window and the field behind.

Booked for one night 2 rooms on ground floor one room fully equipped for a disabled guest. With views over fields, second room also on ground floor comes with own patio, both rooms very well appointed and very large, beds 3 pillows wide, evening meal really good with excellent service, breakfast equally good, we stayed an extra night, you will be hard pressed to find better rooms and food, would return at drop of a hat.

We were part of a large family group and decided to make a weekend of it by staying as well. The lunch and our breakfast was excellent; all homemade, freshly prepared and local produce used. They have their own chickens which kindly supply the eggs for the kitchen. Considering the large group, lunch was served to us altogether and hot. For breakfast, there were a number of options as well as fruit, yoghurt, cereals, pastries, ham and cheese. We stayed in the Captain Oates room which is very nice and the bed was super comfy. The owners, Diana and James, are very friendly and welcoming, we had a thoroughly enjoyable weekend and look forward to returning.

My wife booked this through the Guardian newspaper & well worth it. Spent a couple of days visiting the local area. Had 2 meals here & the food was excellent with great service. Breakfast was fresh fruit followed by scrambled egg & bacon. Great bedroom & a really great view across the fields. I highly recommend this as a place to stay or just to eat.

Whilst family over the Easter weekend, I visited the Pheasant with my family. We had delicious food - I had the home-made steak & kidney pie which was super. Overall, a great evening again at The Pheasant with great service and atmosphere.

A warm welcome awaited us as we entered the property and the glass of prosecco was much appreciated. Our room was spotless, comfortable and had the added bonus of tea/coffee making facilities, fresh milk and water in the fridge and home made biscuits. The quality and presentation of our evening meal was superb and the choice at breakfast was very good. The owners/hosts have built a business to be proud of and we would have no hesitation in recommending 'The Pheasant' to others.

We were a large party of 12 and had Sunday lunch at the Pheasant. It's not a big restaurant and I was unsure whether they would be able to accommodate a large party but the owners were very helpful and put us up a large table in the restaurant area. Despite me changing the numbers several times as various family members dropped in and out, the staff were very understanding and patient! They were also very understanding and patient when after only about ten minutes of getting there, we had re-arranged their table twice, asked for the wood burner to be lit, set all the smoke alarms off and more or less shut down the kitchen as a result! All our fault, and all taken in their stride with good grace and calmness - thank you!

I stayed at the Pheasant earlier in the year with my wife, but due to prior arrangements did not manage to eat there, I wrote a very positive review of the accommodation and said that we would return, and here we are.

Food is outstanding here. Solo Business traveller avoiding the large chains where possible

I turned up in this shady little corner of hell desperate for some cheap food, after paying I realised the mess, the guy working must have killed a pigeon and stuck it on a pizza, I can only guess that's what he did because that's what the pizza tasted like. Would not recommend ruining your appetite here.

What a disappointment😕 A very poor choice of beer, the only real ale they had on was the ubiquitous and awful Doombar. One of my friends could only drink half of the pint he was served. Also no food was available. This pub looks very tired and in need of some serious TLC. If you want a decent pint I'd suggest going down the road to the Woolpack. The Railway in Witham is without doubt a pub to avoid in the future.

Popped in for a pint whilst in Rayne. Just the one cask ale, but a really well kept 1555. Spotted the menu and decided on food. Food was delicious, clearly homemade and very reasonably priced. Televisions showing sport were unobtrusive and the staff were polite and friendly. A really nice pub.

I have been to Cherry Tree both before and after the management has changed. I like the cosy feel of the interior. Staff friendly and attentive, tables nice and clean. Food was good, but I wasn't "wowed". Good value for money though. I guess it's more of a place to pop out for a drink than to have a full-on lunch or dinner.
