Railway in Braintree

On 28th August I went to The Railway pub in Witham with some friends, there 7 of us. We were looked after by the staff there. We all had lunch, the meals were excellent & reasonably priced too. We all thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon at this lovely old pub. We hope to return there again in the future!

I came here with friends for a catch up they had a live band on for an 80s night. They were brilliant!

Lovely atmosphere, friendly staff, would definitely recommend!

Met with friends for a Sunday lunch. The meat was cooked perfectly. For the price of £9.95 a head you cannot do much better.

Lovely pub to visit for a function. Food lovely and perfect sized portions. I would say they may have been overwhelmed with the party sizes as food came out at lots of different times, whilst I finished my main, someone else was just being served but, overall, was lovely proper pub cooked food.

we had our wedding meal here on the 28th of july for 23 people and the food and the service were absolutely amazing! everyone commented on how nice the food was. We really couldn't have asked for it to be any better. all the staff were so lovely too. huge thank you to you all

Just what you expect from a pub friendly people and prices on par with other pubs in the area

Standard pub. Only one ale, Doombar which was reasonable. Plenty of outside seating, although mostly close to a busy road.

Popped in for an afternoon drink, service was great and enjoyed a nice quiet drink in the beer garden

Only went in for a drink and sat outside.Relaxing break pleasant staff and atmosphere.

Went here back in the day as the Albert we celebrated my partners son birthday, playing pool & few drinks, very friendly, staff polite enjoyed evening

Waited nearly 45 mins even though the restaurant was empty. Pastry on steak pie tough and chewy, filling more gristle than meat. Green beans were not al dente - they were raw. Mash potato was in a solid unappetising pile and gravy was very lumpy. Have had a good roast there in the past but shall not be returning. Very disappointing.

Good little local, decent Guinness and seemed like friendly clientele hard to rate food as only had a baguette but that was tasty and loads of filling.

Popped in few weeks ago to have a few drinks but was freezing. Asked bar staff if heating was going on and they said landlord doesn’t allow heating on!! So stayed for one and left it was too cold and very run down

Took a long time even though we was the only ones eating in at the time. Food was OK side of onion rings was the star of the meal. but all went cold very quick due to being cold in the pub quite grubby and tatty interior. Staff friendly enough but other people in pub was using a lot of swear words which was a lot of the time we was there we wouldn't go again mainly due to atmosphere and how cold it was in there.

Been going many times for a traditional Sunday roast, had been getting takeaways during lockdown but it’s so much better served. Sometimes found portion size too much that we often get a kid’s portion with extras. Absolutely perfect, friendly staff and always obliging with whatever request we come up with. Always cooked fresh, so a wait is inevitable. Ring ahead, book a time, give your order and it can be quicker. This is also recommended to make sure there’s a slot as it can get busy with it being so popular. If you’re prepared to be flexible, you won’t be disappointed. The added bonus of being beside the station is you get longer here than in the town before having to leave for the train back.

The worst burger of my entire life, I will say and dry as a stone... They don't have the most basic drinks in a pub. The carpet stank and it was terribly cold. And they hadn't changed the fryer oil in a long time. We waited almost an hour, and there were very few people. But the worst, by far, the waitress. She was terribly rude and impolite. I don't understand how a person like that works serving customers. Better choose another place.

Been visiting Witham for a number of weeks and notice the pub when leaving the station, sadly because of lockdown couldn't enter. That change today and was able to pay a visit unfortunately it was cold and had to sit outside. Not a great time to experience the atmosphere of the The Railway. Will return again and hopefully get a better feel of the pub. I have returned since writing the above. And enjoy the atmosphere inside with the locals. Good for a pit stop !

Lovely pub, nice beer and close to the railway station for a drink on the way home. Staff friendly and efficient.

Friendly staff and customers really good night out and not over priced

Just not good enough... service food atmosphere it's just a boring and outdated and so are there manners.

Excellent food and excellent service the railway catered for our party of twelve with ease 5 ⭐ only drawback was the parking, car park was almost full luckily most of our party came on the train 😀

Went for a pub quiz which was well organised. Didn't eat but food appears to be cheap. Place seems a bit run down, toilets poor.

Love coming along for Wednesday quiz night. Well worth the £1 fee. Staff are super friendly and helpful. Great range of food on the menu, all reasonably priced. Food can take a while to come out but always tastes great. Highly recommend a visit!!

Friendly, helpful staff, complying to table service only, not a great menu, good cask beers. It was a quiet, midweek lunch time and had not opened long.

Used The Railway as the venue for a funeral wake . Would like to thank the landlady , and staff at the pub for making this a success. Pub is well run , service is excellent, provided a buffet , and use the facilities for a pie and mash supper , beer is good and at a decent price. Would recommend a visit.

Lovely food good drinks very reasonable price

Any chance of a pint?!? Popped in for a couple of pints on a Sunday afternoon after doing a bit of shopping. Felt like my presence was an inconvenience to the the server. Only about 6 other people in the whole place. Placed my order but left after 15 minutes with no sign of my drink. Shame as pub is so close to where I live. Had the same issue previously with the same server, if you are not a regular don’t expect a drink!

Had a takeaway roast today. Lovely. Would recommend. Thoroughly enjoyed it as did my children.

We normally eat at night but while we were out sightseeing in an area we had never been to in Essex we came across a great Public house with an excellent Restaurant. The Railway Pub in Witham has a massive car park which for us was great as we have large car, when we got inside the Bar area was quite snug taking into account that Covid has made it impossible for people to sit too close. We had only called in for a drink and a snack at lunchtime but having looked at the Menu we decided to have an early dinner, We shared a starter of Ginger & Lemongrass Chicken Skewers (as watching our waistlines) which were so nice we wished we had ordered two, for her mains my wife had Lasagne served with garlic bread while I had Scampi & chips, both meals were excellent and the Landlady Sylvia who brought our meals out made a friendly change from most places. like the whole Menu there was a good choice of Desserts, again we to save on calories shared a Lemon Tart with sweet butter pastry and ice cream. All the above was topped off with a large glass (or two) of white wine I was so glad my wife had passed her driving test :)

Really quiet for a Saturday night, loads of space to sit

Had Sunday lunch again today as good as last time ,the beef was tasty cooked just right and served with all fresh vegetables worth a visit.

Popped in for a meal after a day out in london as it was close to the station. Had a gin and tonic that had the smallest tonic ever in so was undrinkable, ordered a burger and a chicken curry. Took absolutely ages to come out even though we seemed to be the only ones eating. The curry was ok.. not much chicken but tasted ok, naan bread was basic supermarket type, popadum was covered in oil so didnt eat that; i dont think it was homemade curry. Burger was 2 thin dry greasey burgers in a bun, the cheese wasnt melted. It came with a nice side salad which was the best bit of that meal. Very basic.. no extras like relish, onion rings, bacon, etc. Chips were ok.. for £9.50 you expect a decent burger. Pub was cold, not cosy. We would have been a lot better off going to wetherspoons, would have spent a lot less and the food would have been marginally better.

Parking there has always been a pain but today it was easy to park so it was nice to have a good look around

Tried to visit twice in the week and could not get in as they allow commuters to park for free in the week so went in town to eat instead, did eventually get in at a weekend, waited a fair while for the food but when it did arrive it was OK, hot and steak cooked as ordered.

Dive. Went there for 1 drink and there were loads of drunks and dog sh*t in the back garden. Sticky tables the lot

The bar staff seemed over worked but there wasn't many people in there.

We decided to try this pub instead of the better-known Battesford Court (Wetherspoons) pub in the high street that we'd visited several times before.Well the outside is fine but now we know why The Railway has only two customers propping up the bar. The welcome was more 'What are you doing here, I suppose I have to get you something?'. I don't think the sole person on duty managed a smile once. The food was decent enough for the price but it just wasn't a happy place.

I play pool on a Tuesday night! Enjoyed the pool match. Watched play-off from the championship. Had good night. The staff where very nice & the landlady is nice to speak to...

Very nice pub, we took a family in there and they catered for us even gave us milk for the baby and warmed it up. I have been here a few times and the drinks and staff are what a real pub should be like. Wish I could give this place 10 stars.

Great fun quiz on a Wednesday night, food is average, but the staff are all very friendly and welcoming.

Nice outdoor garden beside a river.

Very nice and spacious inside. Can't say anymore as I didn't eat or use bathroom.

Really tasty Sunday lunch and the beer was good. Bar staff very pleasant and helpful. And we could even watch the football on the TV, although there were non-TV areas if we didn’t want to see it.

As pubs go it's pretty good. Staff are friendly. Food is pretty good. The beer garden is a nice size. Parking is a bit bad.

This place has a old fashioned feeling about it.with Morden services. Staff are locally knowledgeable and friendly.

I enjoyed goats cheese and caramelised onion in puff pastry and even my grandson was unable to finish the four jumbo sausages served with peas and chips. Outside area could do with some shade.

Only popped in for a quick pint while waiting for a train. Nice sized pub with plenty of seating inside as well as outside .Again on my visit they only had one of three ales on .Average bar prices .

Popped in here for a pint of bitter and a sandwich but was advised they had no draught beer!! Only lager. The cheese sandwich was well made and nicely presented. A bit disappointing after looking at some good reviews.

Took 45 minutes to get served, maybe understaffed that day, but they did apologise for the delay, and the food when it came was good enough. 'Specials' on the board not available, nor some menu options. Chilly inside. Convenient carpark, convenient for the railway station.

Selling rump as ribeye for 15 quid. Cold meet in the roast and disgusting coliflour cheese.

Lots of sports coverage, and they replaced lemonade when the soda machine wasn't working.

Long wait for food... and expensive for what it is had prawn baguette and prams were warm n tasteless n chips were expensive n got very few.. Lady behind bar was friendly

It'll always be "the Albert" to me.. the establishment gets an extra star for the happy memories it's given me.

Great if your train is delayed. Not much ale choice and is usually off, food is average and takes a while to arrive. Great for a pit stop.

There used to be plants and hanging baskets here, looking beautiful, a nice place to sit and look at the display while you waited for a train, although there are still there, they are all dead and look terrible, it doesn't take long to look after things just wish they would take some time .

The roast dinner was so lovely and very good price would go back again very nice staff as well and the menu had a very good choice and good price

Nice pub with plenty of character. Great pub food although a tad pricey. Eg steak stout pie for a tenner but smells lovely! Linnie is the best barmaid! Go and challenge Mr Jones for a game of crib on Friday evenings early doors.

Visited on a busy Sunday lunch time with family. Bit of a wait but when the food came it was extremely well cooked and presented. The lad serving us was great and made the visit for my grandson with book and pencil and jokes.

Primero fue así que pinta se quejaron y conseguimos una pinta que era también diferente. Así en la justicia ofreció otra bebida. Yo quería una pinta de una bomba. Ninguno para elegir, así que nada más que disculparse. No debería haber sido ofrecidas por mi dinero. A la izquierda en la frustración, aunque sé que debería haber hecho más.

Came to one of my best eating establishments for quick pint. Disappointed with evening staff. Just ignorant. No politeness. They don't seem to like serving customers extortionate prices for normal ale
