The Penny Black - JD Wetherspoon in Cheshire West and Chester

Stopped this morning for coffee. Acceptable coffee at a better than reasonable price. Venue pleasant too. Service okay.

Food is average. Service and atmosphere is alright. Standard Wetherspoons, cheap and cheerful.

Nipped in here for a quick lunch while out with my mum and sister. The inside sort of gave me unfinished vibes. As if it was getting decorated but not finished. We struggled to find a table that was clear of empty plates and drinks. It was not busy in there at all either and the plenty of staff looking busy but couldn’t actually work out what they were doing. Just aimlessly walking around. The picture of this box full of dishes was there before we came and right up until the end of us leaving. We ordered via the app. and they took near to 20 minutes just to bring out 3 soft drinks. Food was decent and warm so can’t fault that and the lady who brought it over was friendly. Another lady spotted the box full of dishes just as we were getting up to leave and did seem quite annoyed by that and began to clear it up but she was blocking my exit of me trying to leave. I tried to scoot round her but she was just more focused on clearing away our plates and the others around than to let me past. Not the end of the world but i thought it would’ve been ideal for the pair of us to let me past then she would have more space for herself to finish clearing too?

Always enjoy a couple on here on a Fri teatime. Food is good , beer and wine is excellent!

Lovely Food and the Staff were very Friendly.

Curry night ordered the tickets was nice ish, nan burnt and the poppadoms there was layer of oil on them I no it's cheap like but wetherspoons could do better

Great pub, spacious rooms, good outside area..unfortunately, it was a busy Friday night and there was only 2 staff members (bartenders) serving behind the bar, took 20/25 minutes to be served..

Why is it that everyone else brings their own paper cup and gets free hot drinks, but I have to pay for mine? Also, the food service here is incredibly slow—I waited almost an hour just to get my breakfast! When it finally arrived, it was cold. On top of that, they didn’t give me the toast I ordered, even though I can see that my breakfast is supposed to include toast. I didn’t bother asking for it because I didn’t want to wait another hour.

Great selection of beers and wine 🍷 the staff are very good, patient, caring knowledgeable , we had a great couple of hours we will definitely return 😀 👍

Enjoy visiting weatherspoons where ever I am, coffee is £1 19 p cheaper than usual Chester visit. So

We had a valentines meal there today. Thinking it might get very busy as it's valentines day. And it was quite busy nearly all the tables were taken. To our surprise，the drinks arrived swiftly and presented well. Food arrived shortly afterwards. It tasted lovely and we had some brownies for dessert. Waiter and waitress were friendly ,attentive and helpful thinking about how busy it was. They were very capable. We just paid £25 for the meals so it's a great bargain. The food were cooked nicely and everything was nice. We are very happy 😊 Thank you (We had a lovely medium cooked sirloin steak and mix grill , passion fruit cooler and brownies)

Top food, good staff, nice and clean.

I wanted fish n chips but there weren't any left. Since it was a sottish theme, I opted to try the haggis burger with whiskey sauce. It was very nice. It was my first time experiencing haggis and I must say it was good 👍🏾. It is very reasonably priced too.

Like all Wetherspoons pubs this is a place for cheap drinks and eats. Expect no frills and fairly basic food but at scarcely believable prices. A lot of people get snobbish about 'Spoons as it's known but it's actually a brilliant business model and handled with the efficiency of Formula 1 If you order a cooked breakfast for instance it will be on your table within 5 minutes. Later meals around the same time. OK it's hardly cordon bleu but some of the meals are actually very good (Korean Bowl recommended) and you get a discounted drink included, soft or alcoholic. When you add bottomless tea and coffee for £1 you really cannot grumble

Of all the Weatherspoons we have visited this one has the worst toilet facilities, you're lucky if you can find a cubicle in the ladies that has paper, a toilet seat that isn't broken and a door that locks!

Lots of external character beautiful building and extremely popular inside, very reasonable prices and plenty of seating

I have been to a few spoons over the years. I must say I have never been in one this bad. The food was not very nice and clearly microwaved . The beer also clearly looked and tasted as if it was watered down. The building could really do with an update..I am surprised that weatherspoon has not done much with it . Suffice to say none of our group will not be going back.

Saturday afternoon...2.45pm, shut the kitchen for half an hour as its supposedly busy!!!! Half the beer taps empty (even though still advertising them.....this place gets more useless by the week!

Bar staff haven’t got a clue had to wait for 15 minutes to be told not serving at this end of the bar now join the queue in the middle .Will not be back !

Good food, friendly staff, great prices, but really needs to be refurbished, very dated decor. Especially the carpet

We just finished the boat trip down the river,on lovely sunny day. Get in here,the food being really a great,the drink nice and the whole time,the staff kind,helpful. We choosen Gourmet Steak,Fish and Chips and S. Chicken.It was so good,literally just slid down on our throat. Good value for the prices,nice couple of hours,recommended.

Very nice wetherspoons,outdoor seating, car park is pay and display but you can get your money back if you are a Penny Black customer. We had the delicious chicken wrap and I had a raspberry & liquorice vodka... yummy

Not just your run of the mill lagers and creamflows (which there is plenty off) but proper beers at great prices.

Very rude waitress never smiled,dirty menu's and food looked and tasted like a cheap microwave meal, never again, avoid at all costs!!

Just been today, very large Spoons this and can imagine it getting busy at night. We was there for lunch etc… friendly staff and great plate of grub! Was a little disappointed in the guest real ales. Too many blondes but I coped ;)

Very impressed with Jake and his team, nothing was to much trouble for Jake, food was hot, tasty and served swiftly, 2nd visit and sooo impressed, would highly recommend light and airy pub,clean and friendly,probably the best wetherspoons we have been in and have done quite a few keep up the fantastic work Jake.

There are very few pubs these days in Northwich town centre. The Wetherspoons pub isn't quite as well designed as others I have visited, but for a quick drink it was fine.

went for breakfast with my daughter this morning, first time i’ve ever seen hair in apple juice before the staff replaced it, breakfast was nice until i found a hair in my egg, must be running a barber shop in the back ?

Rated as a spoons the food is basic good value gear . Don’t expect gourmet. It’s really a cafe.

Oh dear.. this is really one of more chronic versions of Weatherspoon. Cheap as ever, but not the usual stunning building. It felt like it was a temporary situation hiwever that was not the case.

Penny Black ?more like The Penny Dreadful.I am usually fond of Weterspoons but this place lacked any resemblance to others I have visited . The atmosphere was strange and you felt like you were having a drink in a church hall.maybe it was the brightness due to all the glass panes in the roof but it seemed to emphasise the absolute dreariness of the place . Food looked ok though especially the Pizzas but that’s about it.

Wetherspoons is always great value. A good sized all day English breakfast and a pint of Green King Abbot for less than £7 what's not to like. The exterior of the building is stunning which makes the interior all the more disappointing, a bit like a works canteen! However we found a table in one of the alcoves which helped. No complaints about the food steak and fish and chips as well as the breakfast and the staff were friendly.

Great for a reasonably priced generic pub meal... it reminded me of an RSL type bar in Sydney... Lacked something....don't get me wrong, I've been to many Wetherspoons places and they are generally OK. You get what you pay for. Thanks for listening

A large Whetherspoon's pub with all the usual features in the centre of Northwich. The meal we had was good value.

As ever, tidy, smart building 🏢, heating was U/S but Staff were pleasent and helpful

It's Wetherspoons, so you know what to expect. Good value simple basic food and a comfortable environment. I'd rather go here than Mcdonalds.

It is cheap but not cheerful. Uncleared tables everywhere, unable to get served, and the staff shortages are evident...

Went in for a breakfast, partner wanted mushroom benedict but on ordering was told they have no poached eggs! So I asked, so you don't cook eggs here? No, was the reply. Coats back on and out we went.

Not a very friendly atmosphere , would not go back.

First time visiting and I won’t be returning. Ordered drinks which arrived quick then ordered an American breakfast, food was luke warm and pancakes were cold like they had just come out of the fridge. The streaky bacon underneath my pancakes were brown. We then ordered more drinks and the waitress who served us with pink hair didn’t take away our plates, she only took them away when we were leaving. The atmosphere was non existent.

New manager has a attitude problem, She’s really rude. All the other staff are fine.

Going downhill fast. Food unappetising. Steak deal half gristle. Beer still very good and inexpensive. Kiwi barstaff better by far than all the local disinterested yuffs.

Better than any other wetherspoons, food is always good, cask is always on point, staff are friendly, I have no complaints, however an upstairs would be great so you could eat with family a little further away from busy bar

Is it too difficult to take away empty glasses, clean tables and arrange seats to welcome new patrons into your establishment? Not all individuals wishing to visit Weatherspoons are the great unwashed! Please up your levels of service, a smile, maybe a welcome, maybe just do what your getting paid to do, if you don't want the job make way for someone who does.

Ordered food 1hr later still didn't arrive so asked they said must of been wrong table so they reorder another 30mins still no food so went said I've waited nearly 2hrs for food so I said could I have a refund discusting service

Had a meal steak, jacket potato and a pint, wonderful service and food at a very reasonable price.
