Takeaway… Quite bland not enough sauce, made us feel quite sick after for hours ended up going to bed. IMO the s&p chicken was well off its normal, minging in fact! Spending £40+ on a takeaway is extortionate for 2 people unfortunately won’t be returning.

We have been coming to the Pavilion since it opened and also previously in consett. We have had family birthdays and celebrations over the years and always had a great service. Our latest visit was my husbands 60th for 11 of us. Food was lovely as always no complaints. Yes prices have gone up but so has everywhere sadly ! We were well looked after and they brought my husbands cake to the table with candles 🎂 we had a really lovely afternoon. food was delicious can’t find fault with anything. Booked my mams 90th for September too

Nothing but amazing things to be said about this place, I’ve visited time and time again. 10/10 The food is unreal and high quality and the service is just as good, there’s some lovely staff members that work there who go out of their way to give you the best experience. The portions are a great size and what you can’t eat, the staff kindly box it up for you, prawn crackers are complementary and if you want some more, just ask! The staff are happy to help you. If you haven’t been here yet you need to! They cater for all different events, birthdays, baby showers, christenings etc.

Ordered a takeaway yesterday. first up, the prices are pretty high end for a Chinese restaurant. £10 + for spare rib's, mostly bone , 🤷🏼‍♂️ was expecting good things. My beef & mushroom £16.80 was incredibly bland, even the extra portion of bean sprouts were stodgy. I don’t mind paying for quality but I’ve had better for half the price, from a local takeaway. £125 for a takeaway for 4 people. First & last time ☹️

I have always loved the Pavilion and tend to come here for ‘special’ lunches and dinners as it is a bit of a trek out and a bit more expensive than other Chinese venues. The food is usually excellent and portion sizes good. However, the last couple of lunch time visits have been a bit disappointing and the prices have risen - which is a universal problem in all venues following Covid and Brexit nonsense. It is hard to put a finger on exactly what it is but there is definitely something lacking. The most noticeable thing for me was the hot and sour soup: that just does not taste the way it used to :-( The service is always good and the surroundings are good but I will not be rushing back :-(

Had a lovely experience here for a meal for my 60th birthday. Staff were absolutely spot on, nothing was too much trouble. Food was delicious, highly recommended! After the meal, my daughters partner had organised an ice cream, squirty cream and candle for me to blow out whilst singing happy birthday to me. It finished the meal off perfectly! I can't comment on cost because it was a gift, so I have no idea what my daughters partner paid. I just know everything was just perfect! I definitely recommend 👌

It's not cheap but the food and service were both good. Went for a midweek lunch and the restaurant was still rammed, but they had plenty staff on and food came out in good time. For three of us having the lunch special and a couple of soft drinks the bill was just north of £90, which is obviously pretty steep. But couldn't knock the food or the experience at all.

Went to the Pavillion for lunch with family and friends. Lunchtime menu was just short of £29. For soup, ribs and a main with rice. The food was ok nothing special but had no reason to complain. I always have chilli oil, which essentially is a condiment with my meals and I’ve done this at the Pavillion many times no charge. I was horrified to find out that a little bowl of chilli oil was charged at £2.50 which in my opinion is a disgrace when the total bill was over £200. Just spoilt what should’ve been a lovely afternoon. What are they going to charge for next salt and pepper? When I questioned it with the waitress, it felt like it fell on deaf ears and was totally dismissed.

The curry sauce and satay chicken skewers are good. But chow mein chicken isn't good in my opinion, nor are the soft noodles. And i'm not a fan of the vegetable spring rolls.

After many happy years of getting take aways from Pavillion, it’s sad to see the quality decline. Our take away yesterday had the smallest portion of any take away we’ve had in a long time. We all know shrinkflation is a thing, but the high prices means that portions should be sustained.

Celebrating a good friend’s birthday, table booked for 8. Table service staff were young and friendly. We chose the luncheon menu and all food was tasty, hot and there was plenty of it. Very busy restaurant but we never felt rushed.

I took my family there for a special dinner and we were very disappointed it was Lacking in atmosphere the food mediocre and staff not very friendly. Certainly not worth the price we paid should have got a Chinese takeaway. Decor rather sad and requires upgrading.

The Pavilion is a wonderful restaurant. The staff are always friendly and attentive. The food is amazing, enjoyed everything i ate. They will even box up any leftovers for you to takeaway with you. A lovely place and highly recomended.

Sorry this place has lost its high standard We have been eating there for twenty Years and even had our wedding reception there. But this is the third and Last time of the latest poor quality food. We even sent the food back We witnessed the chef outside smoking He appeared new. The staff are lovely But the food is now not good Maybe on a weekend it may be better I was so disappointed. The time before we got someone else’s left over meal When we asked for the left over food To be wrapped and sealed to take home. So sorry hope they go back to they Old standard

Simply put, this was the best Chinese meal I’ve ever had. From start to finish, it was all excellent. Would definitely recommend and will be going again.

Friends have raved about this place for years, so I booked for a family birthday celebration. I came across the Tripadvisor reviews just before leaving and was worried I’d made a mistake, but we were all very impressed. The food was delicious, the staff were friendly and the restaurant had a good atmosphere. We would all be happy to return.

Having been here previously I can say that the place has massively gone downhill. Food bland and salty and pushy staff with prompting for drinks and generally hovering around the table.

It's not my type of food so carnt really say much about that (family's decision), everyone else seemed happy apart from the soup alot of people said it's went downhill.... NO BABY CHANGING FACILITY IF YOUR MALE!!!! only changing area was in the female toilets. I don't normally write reviews but come it's 2023!!!

Met family here over the holidays. Had been told this was one of the best restaurants in the area and had high expectations. The meal was grim. I had hot and sour soup which was neither hot nor sour. It wasn't peppery as it's meant to be it was sweet and resembled a sweet and sour gravy. But worse, instead of slivers of char siu or chicken it had spam cut into batons. At first I thought it was tofu! But it was actually luncheon meat in a soup as part of a £25 per head menu. We were given some prawn crackers which tasted old and then I had a beef curry. This was a huge portion but unfortunately was mostly gloopy sauce and resembled the curry sauce you get in chip shops served over chips. All that was in it was onion and peas and meat that didn't look or taste like beef. It was so thin and soft and chewy. I felt compelled to write this review as for a table of five the bill came to £125 and it simply wasn't worth it. I picked up the bill and at no point did any of the staff ask how the food was. I think they already know the quality of the food that is being served. Paid and left and will never return. Suggest you avoid this place it feels like a scam. I cannot believe the 5 star reviews it has received are for meals like we experienced so can only conclude it must have changed hands and is under new management. Awful meal, uncaring service. Terrible experience!

We’ve been going to the Pavilion for years for dinner. It has always been excellent. However, today we went for lunch and ate from the lunchtime menu. What a huge disappointment. The beef curry actually tasted like it was from the local chip shop. The food was glutinous. It was eaten out of politeness as it was a birthday treat but afterwards everyone agreed it was pretty poor.

Lack of bar and reception area is disappointing and I really don't know what to say about the photocopied menu and pen instead of a proper menu and a member of staff taking the order. COVID restrictions are long gone so this seems a lazy way out - very disappointing. I could live with that if the food was as good as it used to be, but it is now only average and bland and not worth the money. Service was still good.

We ate here for a family meal and it was the first time we’d been in years. Unfortunately, this place is not what it used to be. The decor is the same and could do with an update. The staff are ok but the service wasn’t attentive enough and it took literally hours for us to get served three courses. When looking at the menu, we commented on the high prices but were hopeful of amazing quality of food which is not what we received. The prices are high because you get big dishes. That’s fine but you end up not being able to eat it all and I’d much rather have tasty quality food than a heap of cheap rubbish out of the freezer, with too much salt and MSG. We definitely definitely will not return.

After many many years of happy visits to the Pavillion ,last nights meal was the only time we have needed to complain. Things have changed at the Pavillion dramatically since the Pandemic and not for the better. This Restaurant had an incredible reputation which is now taken for granted ,with many short cuts now being employed. Gone has the much loved reception drinks area,the massive white lillys,the superb service and attention to detail that the Pavillion was famous for. Their has been too many poor changes and decisions.The Prawn crackers were the best ever,but are now greasy and tasteless. The Hot and sour soup has changed recipe and although it was acceptable it was no way as amazing as before. The Duck was dry and overcooked,average really. We complained about the Fillet of Beef on the Dynasty Menu which was NOT fillet of beef but a very tough and rubbery substitute which was completely inedible. Our Complaint was not taken seriously and they seemed offended that we should have complained with the supervisor explaining rudley that it was OUR fault not the fault of the Restaurant that the Beef was tough ??? Sadly this amazing Restaurant is having serious issues and it is time the owners realised this and listened to the public that have supported them for so many years. This Restaurant was once the best,the very best,and now it is just average,all very sad,I hope they listen .

I have recently been diagnosed with coeliacs and me and my family are still discovering restaurants that are gluten free. Me and my family have been Been before before I was diagnosed and it was astonishing but the last time I went was the first time and I must say I was very impressed the only bad thing was is that they didn’t have any gluten free prawn crackers. You get your own bowl for your rice and plate for your other things. I would 100% recommend this place wether your gluten free or not. The waitress was so helpful

This was my first visit and was really looking forward to having a special meal as the place always had a reputation for "that special occasion". When we arrived there was nobody to assist us to our seat - we were meeting several friends. We had to amble around until we actually saw them at the table. When we sat down, no staff presented us with a menu, I simply found the Luncheon menu and a pen. Not sure if this format was a remnant of protocol carried over from Covid but it felt like lazy service. When we were decided on what to have our order sheet was collected. We were asked if it would be ok to bring all the starters on one big plate. This also felt lazy. I was still excited about the food arriving however. Unfortunately the food was terrible. Not average, not poor, but terrible. The Chicken and sweetcorn soup had the consistency of mucus and the hot and sour soup was just sour. The curry triangles were miniscule - I didn't taste them though. The Wontons had practically no filling just deep fried sheets which tasted of nothing. The Peking ribs were ok but small. The Chicken wings looked almost anaemic - had no colour to them at all. I chose the Chicken breast Malaysian style. I was expecting a chicken breast in a complex sauce of aromatic spices with lots of different flavours. What came was a joke. I actually thought it was an April fool. (we visited on 1st). I was presented with a Bird's eye (or other brand) crispy chicken in a watery Chinese curry sauce of very little flavour. My wife had Chicken with pineapple and ginger. It no flavour apart from big chunks of ginger. It desperately required seasoning. I save the worst to last. One of our party had a beef curry which was completely inedible. Had I ordered it I would have sent it back. The sauce again was tasteless but the "beef" had no texture or flavour. I did wonder why she had eaten none of it but then I understood. It was by far the worst thing I have ever eaten. I could not even manage another mouthful. I would have been disappointed had I paid £10 for the food but paying £26 for it is a complete disgrace. The one star is for the attentive service for refreshments. The food scores zero. This was my first and only visit. I will never ever go back. Read my other reviews. This is my worst review of anywhere.

It actually pains me to write this review as I used to love it here. It was also my Dad’s favourite restaurant. We visited back in January for Chinese New Year and it was a poor experience. The soup and starters were nice enough but the mains were really bland. The biggest shock and disappointment on the night was the arrival of the duck pancakes. Usually my favourite part of the meal but this time, the duck was not shredded. We were basically just given a plate with lumps of duck on it. We asked about shredding it and the waitress just laughed at us. Not what I’d expect, especially as the prices that night were on the high side. Loved this place over the years but I won’t be visiting again in a hurry.

Really enjoyed our visit. It was reassuringly busy and we'd been told that people travelled from miles around the eat here. I can see why. The food was fresh, flavours excellent and the service friendly and attentive.

Lockdown kept us inside for birthdays, graduations, leaving dos & Easter. So, it was great to spend an evening at the pavilion in it’s new Covid safe layout. The restaurant makes you feel very safe with one way systems, spread out tables & sanitation stations throughout. Yet you still felt cosy and intimate, Covid has not let the Pavilion loose it’s appeal. Staff are also geared up to safely deliver excellent levels of customer care as ever nothing is too much. Food was piping hot and full of flavour & the steak in the Cantonese sauce lovely and tender. Already booked again for August.

Amazing post lockdown experience. Having had a dreadful experience in a horrible little pub yesterday we decided to return to an old favourite. Foot exceptional as always as was the experience , seating designed to ensure no contact , one way systems , staff all adhering to new policies etc. A lot of work had gone into it but still top notch and they deserve a lot of credit

As the restaurant is closed due to the Covid 19 virus this restaurant is now doing takeaways. We rang the night before, gave our order and paid by card. We were asked what time we wanted to collect. At the correct time we pulled into the car park expecting to ring and say we had arrived, however before the phone had connected the meal was delivered to the collection point. The food was excellent. Just as tasty and the same high quality as when we eat in the restaurant . We will be ordering again soon.. N

Always loved the Pavilion. This was our expensive special occasion restaurant. Due to Coronavirus we were so pleased they were doing takeaway so for my husbands birthday we placed an order. Once I collected I rushed home to enjoy. I opened the box to find no starter! Salt and pepper chicken wings are our favourite! First disappointment. Second disappointment was the food. Curry had no taste, sauces were thin and watery. Not gonna hurry back that’s for sure!

Very impressed with the service of staff here, really attentive and friendly. Smart uniforms too. Very authentic decor - a little dated but all Chinese styled which I like. The food was really really good - and the menu is labelled gluten free which is very rare for a Chinese restaurant so thank you so much for that! The salt and pepper ribs are amazing!! I would say the ginger and spring onion sizzler chicken is bland and has a broth taste but maybe I just picked the wrong option. My party had Cantonese sizzling beef and loved it, and someone else chicken black bean and loved that too. Thanks! Will absolutely be back!

First visit and was totally impressed. The service was amazing and very friendly. The large restaurant was full but the staff were very efficient. Prices are high but the atmosphere , decor, staff and food were all worth it. This is a real find for us and reminded me of how a good Chinese restaurant used to be. Obviously family run and with years of experience.

was taken there last year for my birthday by my mate and his wife pint of larger very expensive. the meals ordered could have had the same meal from a take away would have been a lot better

Great food better if you order a selection of main meals, rather than people ordering a meal just for themselves. Staff all pleasant but rushed off their feet. Great atmosphere.
