The Ox in Edinburgh, City of

Went here for Sunday roast in December. Roast beef was grey. A lil slimy kale was underneath the beef with a starchy tart flavour. Roast potatoes were small not delicious yet with a poor attempt at a glassy quality. Sunday roast is meant to be a hearty meal yet the portion was small and I went for lunch elsewhere afterwards. Atmosphere was boutique. I was seated on a bench with a young couple on one side and a loud rude male and female on the other side. The seating was clearly unfair on the young couple who deserved privacy. Everyone around me ordered the roast and had the same. I was asked at the cashier how it was. I mentioned the cook on the beef. The waiter was stood with the cashier. They said that it is necessary to ask for a rarer cut. No doubt they would spit in your food.

We researched for a good Sunday roast in Edinburgh & The Ox came up. I wasn’t able to make a booking but went there hoping to get a table. The Sunday Roast was outstanding. My lamb was so tender & flavoursome and the potatoes beautiful & crispy. The highlight was the gravy. Lovely attentive staff & a wonderful experience overall. Highly recommend.

Booked a table for Sunday lunch with some friends, what a delightful place. Our lunch was delicious and the service was polite, friendly and efficient. A must stop while in Edinburgh.

It was really crowded even it was only 05:30pm.. Anyhow we got a table and everything was Perfect from service to food ( Ox Burger) 🍔 we will come back 😄

Great food and service. Visited on a Wednesday with a group of 8, three were coeliac. Waiter was very helpful and knowledgable about gluten free dishes. Food was great especially the slow cooked Ox cheek. Prices were very reasonable. Would highly recommend especially for GF food

Went here for a roast yesterday, wasn't disappointed. Good staff/service, roast not cheap but worth it. An extra/bigger Yorkshire pudding would have been good. Meat was excellent, cauliflower cheese not the bugged portion but the cheese and char was good. The custard with the crumble was closer to cream but otherwise not much to pick fault with here, staff were the best part warm and welcoming, solid roast if a little on the steeper side.

Four of us enjoyed the Sunday roast beef recently- terrific large plates of terrific beef and all the trimmings. Good service and atmosphere. Only thing that let the experience down was the very uncomfortable low wooden seat I was on- my back was breaking by the end!

Very warm welcome. It was Burns night so my husband had Haggis and I had the Korean Chicken Burger. The Haggis was good but the burger was fantastic - zingy and creamy sauce, crunchy coating on a juicy chicken fillet. It tasted brilliant. We’ll be going back. Very dog friendly too which is a big plus, thank you to the two lovely people who looked after the three of us and to the kitchen team too! 😊

Love this pub. Truly family friendly (rare in Edinburgh), food is tremendous, super service. A great pub.

After a fantastic meal at nearby restaurant Rollo (which we would highly recommend), we were looking for a nightcap on our way home at The Ox, around 10.40pm. Upon entering the establishment, we were met with an incredulous look and a firm confirmation that last orders were well and truly gone. This was despite the fact that there was a fairly full bar, and the gentleman telling us they were shut was pouring drinks. Happy to accept that we were too late, I have just checked the website which clearly state that you are open until 12pm. Maybe I have missed something !!! This bar does not seem to encapsulate the friendly Edinburgh hospitality that we love.

Chicken burger with virtually no chicken, son and wife seemed to enjoy their’s. The staff were good, but will not be returning.

This is my most favourite place in Edinburgh for a Sunday roast ! It’s consistently amazing, every time. I’m incredibly hard to please when it comes to a Sunday roast and this is the only place for me. Great service and atmosphere too. Highly recommend

So we arrive at 15.50hrs for 16.00hrs booking, ordered drinks - sorry we are sold out of house red! Of their 3 Sunday roast options, they were already sold out of 1 ! Strike 1 At 17.25, we were reminded "we need your table back before 6. Again at 17.45 we were reminded. Strike 2 We hadn't asked for the bill at 17.45 but were handed it, complete with desert double charged and extra drinks charged. Strike 3 For that service you have to pay a service charge! Why ? Sorry but I cannot recommend and won't be back.

A QUICK LUNCH Popped into “The Ox” for some lunch at the weekend. The food is freshly cooked and was brilliant, nice looking, nicely presented and really tasty. We had 1 Shin beef pie with mash & 1 Fish and chips all washed down with a bottle of red. Only complaint would be the colourful language coming from the kitchen, one chef has clearly been watching Gordon Ramsey too much! Food was great though so we will definitely be back.

We came here for their Sunday roast dinner on our last night in Edinburgh and it was by far the best meal of our trip. We tried the roasted pork and the beef and both were 10/10. Everything was perfectly seasoned and flavourful. I don’t eat beef very often but I tried my husband’s and it was so tender. Make sure to get some cauliflower cheese on the side; I will be dreaming about that dish for the rest of my life! Thank you for an incredible ending to a great trip!

Wonderful pub setting for a Sunday Roast. Great food, engaging staff and cozy setting. Made our last day in Edinburgh most memorable. A beautiful city with all of the warmth and charm that only Scotland can offer.

Lovely place with really good food! We had the haggis bon-bons, scotch egg, halloumi fries and oxtail soup and everything was proper good. Prices were reasonable and the only reason I considered not giving 5 stars, is a rather meager selection of beer and at the time of our visit, there wasn't a guest cask ale. Would absolutely recommend! 😊

Perfect restaurant for Sunday dinner. Lovely area and walk from the city center, good selection of beer and whiskey, and of course outstanding food. The menu is unique, portions are good, and I recommend dessert (the berry apple crumble is amazing)

Had lunch here at the weekend and I high hopes ..... Place was very quiet, in fact we may have been the only people there 🤔 Staff were quite short with us as a group and in some cases quite unhelpful and rude Food was OK but I had hoped for better Table had to be back by 5 (as we were repeatedly told from about 4pm!!) Will not be back, don't know if it was just an "off" day but very disappointed

Not a bad little establishment. The food was nice. However, I had the fish finger burger and felt it lacked in flavour a little. The skin-on chips were brilliant, and the beef and Guinness pie was brilliant! No air conditioning in the place and toilets are tiny.

The Ox is a quieter pub experience than some of the other local spots. Excellent service and good food. Classic fish and chips proved tasty. Some vegetarian options were average. Intriguing fish sandwich.

Tried to get a table at this place for 7 people. The bartender just said no we can’t accommodate with no explanation. Place gave me the weirdest vibe. Like they didn’t want us there and mind you the place was not busy at all. Maybe one person at the bar. This place might be good I have no idea, but go to another place for a better service.

An OK place but some food average.

Ate here during the Fringe having booked in advance. Service was prompt and we were quickly supplied with drinks after ordering them. Bramble cocktails were nicely chilled and had a gentle kick. Beavertown beers are also available. Our party had the steak and Guinness pie which was freshly baked in the oven after ordering. A golden flaky crust covered succulent pieces of steak in a rich gravy. We also ordered sirloin steak which was nicely cooked to our taste, and served with good chips and a salad. We were too full to try desserts but will return to sample these in the future.

Visited Edinburgh for a few days and met up with a local friend who suggested this place. Food was very nice and I had the Chicken Kyiv. There are one or two respective vegetarian and seafood options as well. The beer list was ok. Overall, we had a nice time and I would visit here again.

Après des km sous la pluie a chercher un pub un vendredi soir, the Ox nous a accueilli d’abord dans un petit coin puis à table. Très bon accueil. Nous avons vous commencé par un apéritif bramble cocktail à base de gin et whisky complété d’un planche mi charcuterie mi fromage très bonne. Puis nous avons goûté aux haggis balls très bonnes aussi. Et nous sommes laissé tenté par un dessert : pudding au caramel sauce caramel avec glace à la vanille ( très très copieux mais bon). Je recommande donc ce bar restaurant pour son accueil chaleureux.

Recommend the onion and oxtail soup. Sticky toffee pudding isn't the best in town but okay.

I'd read about The Ox on TripAdvisor and the reviews of the "Famous Sunday Roast" sounded good. I emailed the owner to ask if certain items on the regular menu were also available on Sunday and he got right back to me and said yes, so I made a reservation. The restaurant has a warm, cozy feel and I appreciated that we were seated upstairs, near the window, so we were able to people-watch as we ate. We tried the roast Scottish beef and the beer battered haddock. Since the Sunday roast was supposed to be famous, I was expecting a generous cut of roast beef but instead received two thin slices. They were well cooked but kind of fatty and just not what I expected. The fish was well cooked. I'd like to give a shout-out to Ella. She did not start out as our server but she stepped in a few times when our server was attending to other tables and made us feel very welcome (our original server did not). Would I come back again? Maybe, for drinks, a burger, and the atmosphere.

We went for the Sunday Roast on 6/25. The food tasted good though not the portion size we were expecting. Some of the wait staff was great, but one in particularizing was rude.

At 10.05 we were turned away as the bar was closing. Published opening time was 11pm. The bar man didn't provided a reason for rejecting us.

This was close to where we were staying, easy walk. The food was very good and our waitress very friendly and helpful. Our only issue was a bit of a limited beer selection. If that is not a concern, good place for an excellent meal.

We stayed very close to The Ox during our long weekend stay in Edinburgh and went there most evenings for a drink. Compared to the extortionate prices of central Edinburgh this was definitely the more reasonably priced option. Our last day in Edinburgh was a Sunday and we booked in for a Sunday roast, we regret this was the first time we ate here as the food was incredible. Staff were always polite, friendly and welcoming.

What an incredible Sunday lunch! I’ve been here numerous times and it never disappoints. Beautiful beef, fantastic roasties, amazing Yorkshire pud and tasty veg. The cauliflower cheese was incredible and the waiting staff friendly and fun. I love it, I’ll be back (as Arnie says) and I have no doubt it’ll be superb again!

We had a great meal here. The menu is well-judged and caters to a wide audience without being huge. The food was excellent. The roast I had was great and the others in our group enjoyed theirs too. This is a very good gastropub and I would recommend it to anyone.

Delicious salmon, asparagus and potato and my husband had the steak and Guinness pie. Also delicious. Good serving size, efficient friendly service and recommend highly. We shared the apple and rhubarb crumble - wonderful. Also a good wine list.

Wow, what a fantastic find this was. Delicious fish pie and the most knowledgeable and friendly staff. Absolutely delicious food and wine, will definitely be visiting again next time I'm in the city.

5 drinks and 1 snack and we had to pay 4,8 pounds servicecost, More than 15% of our bill and we sax nowhere that we Shouf have these extra costs

Fantastic burgers in modern and cozy ambiance. We found this place in the far bend coming from all of the hot-spots. Despite them being obviously short staffed (multiple vacancies poster visible from outside), the men were working very hard to provide quick and friendly service.

This venue has had excellent reviews but our experience was distinctly below average. The kitchen had decided to change one of the starters but hadn’t told the serving staff, so was returned. The beef roast was served drowning in gravy so the roast potatoes were soggy . The apple crumble desserts were very poor with a thin layer of crumble & a thick layer of apple purée underneath. We won’t be back & don’t understand the over the top reviews.

We came from Italy for our honeymoon, and their sunday roast was one of the best dishes we ever had. Also they’re so nice and gentle. Warmly recommend!

Been to this pub a few times for food, which is always pretty good as far as classic pub food goes. I felt the need to leave a review after our experience this evening though, due to how rude our waitress was. Having worked in many different roles and many different businesses in the hospitality industry in Edinburgh, I always prefer to give servers the benefit of the doubt especially on a busy Saturday night. However, the server in the dining room this evening was just flat out rude to a baffling extent. On a side note, the burger buns weren’t very nice. Also, the trend of bringing one tablespoon of ketchup at a time to a table is annoying, although I suspect this is driven by the desire to buy in bulk for the sake of sustainability rather than buying individual ketchup bottles. The quality of the food has also decreased somewhat, despite the fact that the price has increased a lot (although that likely can’t be helped). Overall, the Ox is always good for a nice, relaxed atmosphere if you’re in the mood for better than average pub food. Typically, the service is good (the host was lovely and even laughed at my dad’s bad jokes), but servers with an attitude like the woman who was working this evening should stay behind the bar pouring pints where people might appreciate it more.

Amazing food and atmosphere however, our server was incredibly rude - in fact down right mean and snappy. It was very uncomfortable and made us feel like we couldn’t order or ask for anything to not upset her. We definitely would have gotten more drinks and food if it wasn’t so clear we were such an inconvenience to her. There was no reason for it, we were polite and respectful.

Being vegetarian it can be hard to find a good roast. There but roast was absolutely delicious! With thick gravy, vegetables and yorkie. Make sure you order a side of cauliflower cheese aswell. Also great desserts & great service.

The haggis balls were amazing. I was a bit skeptical about trying it. The taste reminded me of American scrapple. Everything else was delicious as well. We ordered the fish and chips, oysters, and beef meat pie.

Found this place on TripAdvisor we visited today and yes hundred percent TripAdvisor was accurate. What a lovely place to come and have a meal nice surroundings. Food was absolutely excellent scotch, egg it was my favourite. I had a very very nice roast dinner...

Best roast we’ve ever had (and we have one every weekend!) Everything on our plate tasted divine. Very popular though so book ahead.

Everyone i was with got food poisoning, rang the pub to rell them they didn't apologise or take responsibility.

I'd say the value for money isn't there, ordered 2 mains and 2 drinks and it came to over £50, this is with the service charge they added on also. For the cost of each main (19 for a bavette steake witn chips and sauce and 14 for a pie and mash) the food tastes bang average. The pie gravy wasnt very rich and a bit watery if I'm honest, it only came with a dollop of mash and nothing else. The steak was nice,came with chips and a side salad. I'd give the brunch a go but won't be back for anything else. The staff were very friendly and the bar is nice and cosy, just disappointed I left still hungry 😕

Had a lovely dinner here, our waiter was very welcoming and attentive throughout. We loved the haggis balls and the ox cheek was also very tasty. The desserts were definitely the highlight! We had crème brulée and treacle tart, which were both gorgeous!
