Fantastic experience. The place is very nice, with a relaxed atmosphere. The service was impeccable and very kind. The food was really good and plentiful. We went on a Sunday to eat the Sunday roast and it was worth it! The accompanying horseradish sauce is fantastic

We reserved a table for a Sunday Roast and it did not disappoint! We were able to amend our booking order the day prior and the staff were super friendly on our arrival. The food was delicious and staff were attentive throughout!

What a very enjoyable evening. An amazing combination in a fantastic gastropub. Sea bass in a curry sauce, deep fried mussels, pilau rice and poppadoms. Haggis balls for starter but forgot to take a pic.

Food was great and girls serving were lovely. But unfortunately the older gentleman with the beard, possibly you are the manager, couldn't refrain from making sarcy remarks. Maybe he thought he was funny. He was infact, very rude.

Fantastic Sunday lunch today. We had chateaubriand, roast beef and ox cheeks followed by apple tarts rating and a dark choc pot with whisky cream; just gorgeous. Space for our grandson too and our wet coats! Service was excellent. Great pub

The security was so so rude today. I am actually baffled to the point I have to leave a review. My friend and I needed keys so we asked if one of us could go in to get it and he kept saying no. We couldn’t reach our other friends and he started arguing with us when I asked him not to shout at us. Then someone was welcoming us in and he got very verbal abusive. I completely understand he needed to do his job but surely this isn’t the way to speak to someone. Speak check in with your security to ensure this doesn’t happen to someone else!

Me and my boyfriend came here for dinner during our visit to Edinburgh and it was the highlight of our trip! The food was stunning, both the fish and chips and the Sunday dinner - literally couldn’t believe how delicious everything was. The food came really quickly and the service was wonderful, they were busy but still attended to everyone amazingly. Great atmosphere, great staff and great food - definitely add to your itinerary when visiting Edinburgh

Had dinner here today. Arrived about 10 mins early, table was ready. Service was fantastic, very friendly. I ordered the roast beef with extra pigs in blankets, my girlfriend the fish and chips. Both meals were undeniably 10/10. The roast beef was absolutely sublime, one of the nicest roasts I’ve had. The gravy fantastic, along with all of the other elements to create what was a faultless Sunday dinner. Well priced, with the option to add on extra’s if you wish. The food came to us in about 15 minutes, but was made fresh as we could see into the kitchen. We’d eaten, had a drink all within around 50 minutes but never felt rushed. Not one to write positive reviews to be honest, but this was absolutely worth of it. Next time we are in Edinburgh, we will certainly return. Thank you again!

Very cute location, staff super nice and the food was really good (loved the haggis balls and the Venison with the potato terrine). Prices were very reasonable. I recommend this restaurant!

Friday "Buck-a-shuck" with today's prices is simply going to be shan - the Ox presented the entire plate very poorly as a water-filled tray with full-size ice cubes sliding over soaking napkins, servers failed to bring out the accompanying items, and most of the oysters were the smallest morsels of oyster I've ever had. They were at least fresh and shucked with basic skill, thankfully. Although a disappointing dish, we were there for a meal and drinks too, but unfortunately our service was poor from start to finish, with servers in a rush and constantly bumping into patrons seats whilst managing to ignore clearing dishes. I nearly had another tables oysters dumped on my head, which we all sort of laughed off, but clearly the service needs better training or more help. This "service" was already added to the bill (12%, I think) which has become a ridiculous practise recently. On balance, the dishes were a mix of delightful and disappointment, but when the best stand-out is the chips it's hard to be excited about their kitchen. Years ago I rated this place 5 stars, probably due to their excellent Sunday roast. Maybe they should stick to doing what they do well and not much else. In a city full of impressive venues I'm not keen to come back, particularly when I'm held hostage with subpar service added to the bill at the end.

Haggis muerde como entrante para compartir y la principal para los dos fue fenomenal! El venado se cocinó a la perfección y mi mejilla de buey de socios era divina. Consistently busy on a Sunday so please please book. Menu and staff all week are fab. One of the few places where I feel comfortable as a younger woman coming in on my own for a drink with a book. Very cosy and friendly. Feel grateful to have this place on the doorstep.

We went to the OX on recommendation. Unfortunately it didn’t live up to our expectations. The Sunday lunch was very disappointing. We ordered two beef lunches and had intended on ordering a bottle of red until we saw the prices….ridiculously over priced. The meal was warm not hot and the beef had far too much fat and gristle to cut out. I did mention our disappointment to our server who stated she’d pass on our views!! Hence I’m now passing on my thoughts ‘think twice’.

Good food. The Scotch Egg made. With Black pudding was unusual. The service was quick and our host very considerate. Thinking about a visit for Sunday lunch.

Great service, the small menu leaves nothing to be desired. Had the Ox Burger, simple but perfect. French fries were great and the burger was really, really tasty. The ambience is also very nice, you sit comfortably and the acoustics are also very pleasant due to the two levels. Decorated with taste

Went for Sunday dinner. Dinner was average, nothing special. Food was luke warm, wasn't cooked fresh, and seemed bought in, not homemade. Disappointing for the price.

We went for the Sunday Roast, and overall it was quite good. The beef was slightly chewy, but the flavor and sauce were excellent. The dish was also beautifully garnished.

One star for their awful cancellation policy. Charged me nearly $30USD to cancel less than 24h in advance. Would have loved to check this place out as the food/atmosphere looked outstanding, but there has to be a better way to guarantee business than to hold customers hostage with a policy like this.

Buscamos en Google lugares que admiten perros, y estábamos absolutamente encantados de que reservamos una mesa. La comida era deliciosa, el servicio excelente, y el ambiente es fantástico. Ambos miembros del personal con el que tratamos eran muy amables. Joya oculta absoluta.

Definitely dog friendly and not dog tolerant! Were offered a dog water bowel straight away for the dog and gave us a table with plenty of room for the dog. Food was amazing everybody cleaned their plate. Staff were helpful and polite. Bavette steak was only £21 and some of the best steak ever had!

Honestly this has to be one of the best Sundays roasts we have had across the UK. You must book because it is very popular, for good reason. The beef is good but the pork is absolutely insane!! All high quality food and if you have room for it, I recommend the cauliflower cheese as a side. the staff is very friendly and always checking if you need anything else. Many people tried to come for a roast without reservation but it was impossible, so I’m glad we booked ahead of time. Cozy pub atmosphere as well.

Had a great lunch here today - oysters, ox cheek and chicken burger - with excellent white wine - definitely worth a visit

We chose The OX to have the typical Sunday Roast of which I consider myself an absolute fan. The truth is that a great success. A hearty dish for £19 with our roast pork bullion, Yorkshire pudding, vegetables and a delicious gravy sauce. It also has beef and vegetarian options. Highly recommended.

Stumbled upon it by exident but had a wonderful experience! Superb food and great selection of drinks. Would totally recommend for anyone looking for a cosy atmosphere with great service!

Manager horrible.ignored for dessert so called to ask. Told to get out how dare i call himm.if they had paid attention i wouldnt have had to call for service. He said i was rude by calling, when told to leave for calling i did say f off. They then chsrged 50 gb pounds tip. I have never in my 65plus years experienced such apauling attitude from a restaurant anywhere inthe world.

This an amazing lunch, you would have to book as there isn't many seat but it is totally worth it.

Mediocre at best. Low quality meats overcooked. Service was clumsy. From other reviews seems like they have good and bad days. There was no pink beef as is pictured in some reviews, only dry overcooked beef. Yorkshires seemed to be cooked yesterday. Horseradish sauce was basically mayonnaise. Would advise looking elsewhere for a decent Sunday roast.

Salga de Princes Street y llegue a Broughton Street / London Street y encontrará esta joya escondida. No estaba muy ocupado cuando llegué, pero bueno. Tenía las bolas de haggis con salsa marrón y un poco de patatas fritas. Más que suficiente para un pequeño almuerzo para mantenerme hasta más tarde. El menú se veía bien. Lleno de comida deliciosa a un precio razonable. Personal súper amable, nada era demasiado problema e incluso me ayudó con un cargador de teléfono mientras comía. Recomendaré este lugar a amigos / familiares, etc. Ojalá estuviera aquí más tiempo.

We (4 adults) went there for a Sunday roast. Booked a table well in advance, which is highly recommended for Sundays. Staff was very friendly, food was excellent, we had Haggis balls and Scottish salmon as starters, followed by the Sunday roast, beef (2x) was very good, pork (1x)was fabulous, half Scottish lobster (1x) was excellent. Shared a sticky toffe pudding for dessert, which together with cappuchino and espressi perfectly finished our Sunday lunch. We will come again. ;-)

Came in on a Tuesday evening. Called 30 minutes before arriving and staff was very friendly and accommodating even for our late arrival :) food was delivered quickly and tasted amazing! Nice and friendly staff.

The restaurant/pub we visited on the day of the opening match of the Euro - Scotland-Germany. Seeing the Scots' joy in the pub after scoring a goal despite losing - priceless. Delicious burgers, especially fish, and beer - local Scotch, cider and Guinness. Fans - full culture, atmosphere - 100% Scotland.

The Sunday roast was amazing! My friend and I got the beef and the pork belly roasts and both were perfect. The cocktails were also made extremely well.

Amazing food, friendly service. Spoilt by compulsory 10% "service charge". Less distasteful to hike prices by 10% , or better still trust your customers to tip for good service.

We really enjoyed The Ox. Food quality and service were top notch. First, it’s important to remember that booking ahead is extremely important for any restaurant in Edinburgh. We did our due diligence and booked ahead. We were seated promptly and the establishment was warm and inviting. Our service was top notch. Everyone from greeting us to serving our meals were friendly and warm. To start, we shared a Haggis Croquette appetizer with an HP sauce and the Oxtail & Onion Soup. The Haggis balls were good, but what really stole the show was the soup - a French onion soup on steroids. What I actually wanted was the Smoked Ham Hock Scotch Egg, but that was just a sample menu I had seen. The mains were stellar. The braised ox cheek was tender, juicy, and flavorful with a rich red wine braising liquid reduction, mashed potatoes, and carrots. Our other dish was the Shin of Beef Pie… flavor was amazing. To finish, we shared a Sticky Toffee Pudding. I had a number STPs through Scotland without experiencing a bad one - each chef’s version of the dish were good and all excelled in different ways. This particular STP was one of the best we’d tried. Excellent all around.

Perfect for a delicious Sunday roast! I ordered the pork belly roast, which comes in gravy with potatoes, yorkshire pudding, vegetables and apple sauce. The service was great and quick.

We had a reservation for the Sunday roast. The haggis balls were delicious. The salad was great. However, the beef roast was eo chewy and tough that we had to spit out our bites. At the end of the meal we complained about the roast being way too chewy and tough. While the staff were very polite and th3ey said that they will talk to the chef, they didn't anything to rectify the issue. The ox tail onion soup was really delicious as a starter though.

I have came here ever since I moved to Edinburgh and I have always loved it! From the Sunday roast to a juicy burger, the day I wrote this review for a starter I got: pig cheek croquette, WHICH WAS AMAZING, I then had got a burger and for desert I got a beautifully prepared giant sticky toffee pudding! Definitely filling and 100% recommend! And dog friendly.

Went here for Sunday roast in December. Roast beef was grey. A lil slimy kale was underneath the beef with a starchy tart flavour. Roast potatoes were small not delicious yet with a poor attempt at a glassy quality. Sunday roast is meant to be a hearty meal yet the portion was small and I went for lunch elsewhere afterwards. Atmosphere was boutique. I was seated on a bench with a young couple on one side and a loud rude male and female on the other side. The seating was clearly unfair on the young couple who deserved privacy. Everyone around me ordered the roast and had the same. I was asked at the cashier how it was. I mentioned the cook on the beef. The waiter was stood with the cashier. They said that it is necessary to ask for a rarer cut. No doubt they would spit in your food.

We researched for a good Sunday roast in Edinburgh & The Ox came up. I wasn’t able to make a booking but went there hoping to get a table. The Sunday Roast was outstanding. My lamb was so tender & flavoursome and the potatoes beautiful & crispy. The highlight was the gravy. Lovely attentive staff & a wonderful experience overall. Highly recommend.

Great food and service. Visited on a Wednesday with a group of 8, three were coeliac. Waiter was very helpful and knowledgable about gluten free dishes. Food was great especially the slow cooked Ox cheek. Prices were very reasonable. Would highly recommend especially for GF food

Went here for a roast yesterday, wasn't disappointed. Good staff/service, roast not cheap but worth it. An extra/bigger Yorkshire pudding would have been good. Meat was excellent, cauliflower cheese not the bugged portion but the cheese and char was good. The custard with the crumble was closer to cream but otherwise not much to pick fault with here, staff were the best part warm and welcoming, solid roast if a little on the steeper side.

Four of us enjoyed the Sunday roast beef recently- terrific large plates of terrific beef and all the trimmings. Good service and atmosphere. Only thing that let the experience down was the very uncomfortable low wooden seat I was on- my back was breaking by the end!

Very warm welcome. It was Burns night so my husband had Haggis and I had the Korean Chicken Burger. The Haggis was good but the burger was fantastic - zingy and creamy sauce, crunchy coating on a juicy chicken fillet. It tasted brilliant. We’ll be going back. Very dog friendly too which is a big plus, thank you to the two lovely people who looked after the three of us and to the kitchen team too! 😊

After a fantastic meal at nearby restaurant Rollo (which we would highly recommend), we were looking for a nightcap on our way home at The Ox, around 10.40pm. Upon entering the establishment, we were met with an incredulous look and a firm confirmation that last orders were well and truly gone. This was despite the fact that there was a fairly full bar, and the gentleman telling us they were shut was pouring drinks. Happy to accept that we were too late, I have just checked the website which clearly state that you are open until 12pm. Maybe I have missed something !!! This bar does not seem to encapsulate the friendly Edinburgh hospitality that we love.

Chicken burger with virtually no chicken, son and wife seemed to enjoy their’s. The staff were good, but will not be returning.

This is my most favourite place in Edinburgh for a Sunday roast ! It’s consistently amazing, every time. I’m incredibly hard to please when it comes to a Sunday roast and this is the only place for me. Great service and atmosphere too. Highly recommend

So we arrive at 15.50hrs for 16.00hrs booking, ordered drinks - sorry we are sold out of house red! Of their 3 Sunday roast options, they were already sold out of 1 ! Strike 1 At 17.25, we were reminded "we need your table back before 6. Again at 17.45 we were reminded. Strike 2 We hadn't asked for the bill at 17.45 but were handed it, complete with desert double charged and extra drinks charged. Strike 3 For that service you have to pay a service charge! Why ? Sorry but I cannot recommend and won't be back.

A QUICK LUNCH Popped into “The Ox” for some lunch at the weekend. The food is freshly cooked and was brilliant, nice looking, nicely presented and really tasty. We had 1 Shin beef pie with mash & 1 Fish and chips all washed down with a bottle of red. Only complaint would be the colourful language coming from the kitchen, one chef has clearly been watching Gordon Ramsey too much! Food was great though so we will definitely be back.

We came here for their Sunday roast dinner on our last night in Edinburgh and it was by far the best meal of our trip. We tried the roasted pork and the beef and both were 10/10. Everything was perfectly seasoned and flavourful. I don’t eat beef very often but I tried my husband’s and it was so tender. Make sure to get some cauliflower cheese on the side; I will be dreaming about that dish for the rest of my life! Thank you for an incredible ending to a great trip!
