This is the second time I’ve been to this venue this year and on both occasions we had a great experience. On this occasion my daughter held her engagement party here and from the planning stage right through to paying the bill, everyone we encountered was amazing. Particular thanks go to Lucia for her on point planning of the event, the chefs for executing such a wonderful menu (the stuffed Yorkshire puddings and fish and chip cones were very good) and Gary and Lucy for their wonderful efficient bar service on the night.

Stayed at the Bell Inn 17th and 18th May, had breakfast at Ostlers on Saturday and Sunday morning. Quite underwhelming, poached eggs on toast served with no butter on toast on Saturday morning, those in our party who requested butter for their toast received it frozen, one member of our party was served egg on toast with a massive hair in it, she sent it back and then received undercooked eggs, nothing special about my “special” granola on Sunday morning, and my husband’s omelette was forgotten until he eventually asked where it was! At least he didn’t get charged for it. Lovely venue but mediocre food and poor service.

I was lucky enough to be taken to this wonderful venue by my daughter for their Mother’s Day afternoon tea. Everything was amazing from the attentive and friendly service to the fantastic food. The little cakes were out of this world and I have to say that it was the best afternoon tea I’ve experienced….and I’ve had a few! Thanks to all of the staff, especially Laura and Lucy, we had a really lovely time. I would highly recommend this venue and I only hope that it will open once again for dinner, that used to be fabulous too!

So last night I held my 50th birthday party at The Ostlers. Everything was amazing. The food and service were outstanding. It was a private dining event. I had 40 guests, and the room looked beautiful and very classy. I was lucky with the weather, so we were able to use the outside area too. I had a singer and then a table magician when we were sitting down for our delicious 3 course meal. The staff were incredible, the service faultless.

This was a 49th Wedding Anniversary party for 35 people, ranging in age from 8 months to almost 99 years. All the guests really enjoyed themselves. The buffet ( Menu D) was very well presented and the food was delicious. Guests were impressed by the excellent wines available. As it was a lovely sunny day the patio doors were open and guests could eat inside or in the beautiful garden. Thank you so much to Lucia, Anna, Demi and colleagues all your hard work. We will find a reason for another party at Ostlers as soon as we can.

I can’t praise the The Ostler enough. Everything so perfect for my mums 90th birthday. A lovely room with large windows overlooking the hill. Excellent food, we had the buffet. Generous portions per person and tasted lovely, absolutely no complaints, and took extra care with the vegan and vegetarian options, placed slightly away from the meat, so no confusion. The staff I really must praise, they were so helpful, made my life easier and able to enjoy our celebrations. If looking to book an excellent venue I would really recommend The Ostler

Unusual that another separate building became the breakfast room. Nice space, friendly staff. Chose simple omelette and a pot of tea for breakfast. Not quite on the mark with detail on the order, and a little basic. That said, quite tasty and arrived in good time to let me head to work meeting in good time. Cannot see it as a destination cafe, but works as hotel breakfast.

We have been visiting the bell regularly for over 20 years but being creatures of habit never got around to trying the ostlers.Ive often looked at their menu online and thought it looked interesting. On Friday night after a tiring day rather than cook we thought we would eat out .Having had no luck at the Crown or the Bell for a table the helpful lady on the phone at the bell suggested the ostlers which we jumped at. It was very quiet when we arrived so were served very quickly.I liked the cocktail menu and chose a Cosmo which was great. We chose our meals and the place was beginning to fill. Starters promptly arrived. My smoked salmon was lovely, generous portion of salmon and nicely presented. My husband equally enjoyed his duck.I then had the fish and chips ,the chips were so good my hubby tried to nick most of them. The fish was huge and beautifully cooked,I ate the lot much to my surprise because it was so good.Hubbys salmon was also good and again he cleared the lot. Service was friendly and efficient ,we were chatting to the waitress who remembered us from the Bell.I was surprised how reasonable the bill was as well considering I had a cocktail and large glass of wine.overall a really nice visit and we will definitely go back.

Waited 20 minutes outside on the terase and none of the waiters came to even bring a menu. Decided to go to the bar to get a menu, hoping that then someone will come to take the order...didn't happen. We placed the order at the bar, paid for the order and then got served with a bit of an attitude, we did not order any food, just drinks and probably were not worthy of any decent customer service. Do not recommend and will never again visit! A disgrace to the amount of stars they are given, as with this atitude they do not deserve more than 1 star!

We had booked the bell inn as we had been there before and loved it and had also brought 2 family members here whilst on business locally, sadly when we arrive at the pub we were told they weren’t doing food (some kitchen issue) and “food was being served in Ostlers” (which we didnt know about and this started the disappointment) as it turns out Ostlers was a nice place, but absolutely nothing like the pub (which we had gone specifically for) then we find out that it’s not the “pub food” being served in a different location, but actually just their normal food and there was absolutely nothing in the way of an apology (in fact the girl we had to go and find at the bar and I spoke to didn’t actually speak, just took as to a table and gave us a menu) I’ll be honest at this point we very nearly left, but was so hungry we stayed, the food we had was actually pretty good (aside the disappointment of it not being anything like pub food) the starter was nice (tad pricey for the very small dish of prawns at £8) but the main course was really nice (pork) but poor accompaniment of veg, likewise one of the other mains came with chips (about 5) but we all thought the service was pretty poor, again no apology about the whole pub dining and totally different menu (just a brief explanation about a kitchen problem) all servers looked miserable and totally un interested, all in all the whole thing was a bit of a downer with nothing in the way making good. Real shame.

Ostlers is an attractive restaurant in Horndon on the Hill high street with a pleasant ambience and good lighting, unlike many others which are either too bright or too dim! However our waitress was unwelcoming on arrival and throughout serving us, failed to smile. Service on this evening was decidedly slow and apart from taking our order there was no interaction. The menu was limited. However there was a gluten free menu available for one of our party which was a plus. Onto the meals. Home made bread was brought to the table with a balsamic dip. This was delicious and a promising start. I chose the seared wild boar as a starter. This came as a tiny single piece of meat surrounded by thin slices of mushroom. I was amazed at how small the portion was and a little cross when the meat was tough and chewy. For my main I chose the sea bass. This too was lacking in substance...very small serving with little fish meat. The accompanying single fennel and courgette was bordering on hard and very undercooked. For dessert, I opted for rhubarb crumble. This is served with ice cream and custard. There was little crumble topping and I was left with a piece of rhubarb at the bottom of the dish that was again, undercooked. All of this is not what you expect from a restaurant that conveys an image of being select. If you do try Ostlers, parking out front on the road is preferable to behind the restaurant as the car parking is very tight. I am afraid I won’t be returning.

Although the place looks lovely and stylish im afraid that's the only positive thing I can say about Ostlers. We had to get our own menus as the waitress clearly wasn't coming over to our table. Service was slow, portions ridiculously small, (I know it's fine dining but I'm not the size of a mouse!) And cold coffees. We have been here a few times and enjoyed the stylish surroundings and excellent food. This time we chose roasted red pepper and tomato soup which was delicious, although serving it in a kilner jar made it rather cumbersome to eat. The pork belly main course was gorgeous but our vegetables were cold and unappetising. We went for 'triple cooked' chips and they were basically soggy potato wedges; nothing like the crisp crunchy triple cooked chips we have had elsewhere. Dessert was lovely and very pretty. Wine is good value here we find.

After arriving 10 mins early for our 7pm table for 4, we thought we may have a drink next door in the Bell, we let the ostlers know and they told us we should seat now as they were very busy!! Which was untrue!! The staff continued on being very unhelpful, couldn’t explain one of the dishes, poor service, for a fine dining restaurant. So we all had high hopes for the food!!! Not much luck there, our friend thought they had bought her the wrong dish!!! Very bland and poor presentation, my dessert was so terrible it had to be sent back!!! It was supposed to be Black Forest gateau, what they didn’t tell you was it was deconstructed!!! Basically it looked like a firework had hit my plate!!!! It didn’t taste any better either. Sorry ostlers, very poor, we won’t be returning, shame as I was going to be booking a large table for your afternoon tea, but I’m going to give it a miss!!!

The food was of a high standard and everyone enjoyed it. I had a smoked salmon parcel filled with crayfish, a very generous portion, followed by crispy ravioli with a mushroom sauce, absolutely up my street. Visited The Ostlers for our first time on Sunday as a party of four. The ambiance was good, the service was good, but possibly we suffered from "Sunday". The restaurant was busy and very loud making conversation between four people difficult. The food was reasonable, but probably too ambitious and didn't "wow" although it was mainly on the better side of average. Overall disappointed as it didn't deliver what the reviews had suggested. Probably won't go again, but have eaten in the Bell next door (and associate) and believe it to be considerably better. Will go there (the Bell) again.

So much to say about this lovely place! I was totally impressed and one of my favourite restaurants I've ever visited. I have heard a lot of mixed reviews but I feel it is so underrated here and should be shouted from the rooftops how good it is! I do think you have to really enjoy food & be quite a foodie to appreciate how good the food really is here but I'd tell everyone to try it at least once. The service was great, not too much, not pestered at all, but very professional & welcoming. It was quite laid-back and I really liked that. The waitresses were more than happy to explain and answer any questions you had about any of the dishes and were really clued up on everything they had on offer.I had potted crab for starter and battered bream & sweet potato chips with an oyster and miso mayonnaise for main. Both meals I couldn't fault at all. They were so balanced and refined but at the same time quite hearty and full of flavour - not to mention SO filling. We had two desserts to share between us and I did feel like the dessert options weren't the best & we didn't think they were at the same standard as the starter & main but couldn't complain at all. The cocktails were great and they also had an extensive wine list which is rare in this area to find. Just an all-in-all great place and a hidden gem in a cosy little village. We can't wait to return!

We were invited to a birthday celebration at the Ostlers restaurant. This was our first visit and what a surprise. Quite often eating in a large party can be a 'hit or miss' affair, on the food front. This modern restaurant, right next door to the Bell Inn was outstanding. We knew the menu before the event and were asked to make our selection. There was a wide choice for all palates. The quality of the food was excellent. Plenty of variety, served in abundance. Good to see such a variety of vegetables. The meal was topped off with a good selection of wines. Whilst at the venue, we were given a tour of some of the bedrooms, which have been converted from the old school. All rooms were very large and of a very high standard. Certainly 5 star in standard. This is a place that you would want to stay. We are already planning a visit to stay and tour the area. Well done to all the staff who made us feel very welcome and valued. Nobody was rushed and there was plenty of time to chat between courses. This a special restaurant - wish there were more like this!!

Had previously been to the sister restaurant The Bell, but no tables left for lunch , so we were booked into Ostlers a couple of doors down. First impressions, it was very tastefully decorated old with a modern twist, views from conservatory fabulous. On entering, staff were casual, relaxed but very attentive.Restaurant not overly busy , great wine selection and served very promptly. All of us was disappointed that roast beef was not on Sunday lunch menu and no specials either. But we could have Lamb, Chicken or Pork, so did have other alternatives. Our starters were all great, tasty and well presented.Main course lamb and pork was very dry and tasteless, no flavour, gravy far too thick and nowhere near enough, but to order more was not a problem. As I said previously attentive and quick service. Desserts were ordered and WOW absolutely superb, the pear was sooooo tasty and I wanted more, the chocolate so homemade. Shame the lollipop chocolate had sold out .As the restaurant got busier with a lot of people arriving, it was very difficult for us to speak and hear each other comfortably, acoustic not too good, overall Ostlers lacks an ambience but staff made up for it. Stayed in the hotel for one night the room was absolutely amazing also dog friendly had our two dogs with us no complaints from them! Out the back large field to exercise your dogs. Continental or full English which I had and thoroughly enjoyed. Would definitely recommend this place to anyone. Thanks to all the staff to make this a special occasion!!

Came here with my husband as stayed in the hotel next door. There wasn't anything overly negative about our experience but I wouldn't recommend or come back either. The food was limited & there was only 1 opinion for 1st & 2nd course that was vegetarian. The food, I felt was far over priced and a little pretentious for what it was. The best part of the meal was the wine & cocktails which were really nice. Service was fine but staff weren't overly friendly or made much conversation. We had the continental breakfast the next morning and that was fine and different staff were much more welcoming. If we stayed at the hotel again we'd definitely book dinner at the Bell Inn next door instead.

This Restuarant is only open at weekend but this is where you have your breakfast in the morning, and it's very pleasant, I'm sure the food will be as good as in The Bell, same chef !!

Visited this restaurant for our Wedding Anniversary recently and must say really pleased. Upon entering there is a really nice calm atmosphere, and a very friendly welcome. We had a table in the Conservatory and this had a really nice feel. It was a little warm due to the glass, but this is a minor issue. The restaurant and Bar area is decorated in a modern style, and really inviting. We had a lovely bottle of champagne, only a house champagne but equal to a much more expensive brand. Both our Starters and Mains were delicious and the whole meal experience from beginning to end was most enjoyable. The staff are really friendly and very helpful, nothing was too much trouble. When we received the bill we were both really surprised how reasonable it was. We had a lovely evening and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this restaurant.

We Booked the Ostlers for my 'special' birthday lunch. The table setting and outside area are prefect for a large group and it looked so beautiful . My guests were in awe of how lovely it looked , the staff were happy and really looked after us well. The food was truly excellent , especially as we were a large group and we could not fault the service . We adjourned after lunch(early evening by now) to the garden in the Bell and enjoyed ourselves until late. Being able to then just head up to bed in the wonderful accomodation was the icing on the cake. I cannot thank them enough for really pulling all the stops out for my special day . Top class!!

First visit, and its up there with The Bell (next door), The Hoop at Stock, Alec's at Navestock, and Vita Bella at East Hanningfield. Importantly, its taken as read that The Ostlers share the same criteria as The Bell when it comes to sourcing their meat responsibly, i.e., NOT factory farmed. Thats quite important to some of us, to the extent that we'd rather not eat anywhere that doesn't adhere to the principles that we stick to at home. Lovely friendly staff, very nice surroundings, and if I'm not mistaken there was some Miles Davis and John Coltrane on the sound system for quite a lot of our time there. Class!. And of course the food, the food. Wife and I were both delighted with every mouthfull. Not only delicious, but beautifully combined ingredients, put together in a way which allowed every flavour to be savoured, and beautifully presented as well. We'll be back for sure

We went for Sunday lunch at Ostler's having heard conflicting views on it. We were welcomed and brought drinks promptly by cheerful staff. The bottle of wine came and was left unpoured on the table. He did ask if I wanted it poured, but as we were on aperatifs, I said leave it for the moment. However, MINUS point, no-one offered throughout the meal to pour it or top up. All our 4 various starters and mains were delicious. Minus point two, we at the "ladies' " end of our table (of only 6) were never asked if we wanted anymore drinks at all, while the "men's" end the drinks kept coming. We shouldn't have had to ask. The desserts were a disappointment. Pain d'epices turned out to be a slice of malt type loaf with a spoonful of date and fig? jam on. My toffee apple crumble was fine till I got to the melted cheese at the bottom, (I didn't read the description through properly) and it tasted like rancid cream. Ugh. Think the kitchen needs to do a tasting. The prices were very good and the drinks prices reasonable. In all, let down by the lack of attention in service. I would go back and skip dessert. However "Fine ding at its best" it wasn't. For that try Alec's at Navestock.

The Ostlers should not be kept secret, you should be on social media giving this wonderful experience the best reviews. Only problem is getting a booking will be more difficult. The ever changing menu of gastronomic delights prepared by chef Garrett and his team is not to be missed. The ambiance and excellent food are matched by a wine list of equal quality. No matter how far you travel to enjoy a meal at Ostlers you will not be dissapointed

The Ostlers has to be a jewel in the crown, it shouldn't be kept a secret, you lucky people should be getting into the social media to herald this superb restaurant - but NO wait - if you do that you will never get a booking until 2017!!!! The menu defies choice and chef Garret should be congratulated - best of luck with getting a reservation

Very good choice of breakfasts, served in a timely manner. The Full English was very good, served hot and just about the right size. The restaurant is big for a breakfast room, there was plenty of tables to chose from, comfortable chairs. Very nice atmosphere, light and airy with full windows. Prices were good value too.

It is insufficient to say people come in wheelchairs and get up out of them to come in.I am a paraplegic and that is NOT an option.I had to depend on 2 handymen (very friendly) to both assist me in and out, that is shameful in this day & age as well as highly embarrassing attending the wake of a dear friend! The food and drink do not warrant a comment ddrinkue to how I felt being man handled to get out in front of 50-60 other invited guests! Please change your advertising about "wheelchair acessible" or better still make this truly wheelchair accessible for those of us who are "wheelchair bound".We will not be using the Ostlers again because of this.

It's nice to revisit a restaurant and find a completely different menu to the last time you ate there. We started with lamb sweet-breads and my wife enjoyed the smoked salmon. For main courses we enjoyed the 28 day aged rump steak and the sea-trout.There were varying sizes tables and parties on this Saturday night visit. The place was buzzing and friendly.

Decided to try the breakfast because we had a lovely meal at the Bell Inn previously. When we arrived we were directed to this place.I don't have a huge breakfast appetite, and chose poached eggs. My friend went with a full breakfast. We were told to help ourselves to toast and juice, which I thought was a bit odd but thought maybe the waitress just meant my friend, with the full breakfast. The food was mediocre and not piping hot. Disappointing after our previous good experience at the other restaurant. The bad part was that when we went to pay (back to the other building), we were both charged a set price of over £12 plus coffees. We were told that it was on the menu; I pointed out that it was obviously not clear. After some discussion she begrudgingly agreed to only charge us for what we had eaten. Not an impressive or pleasant experience.

Visited The Ostlers for my brothers birthday lunch one Sunday in January. The food was terrific as you would expect from a restaurant associated with The Bell. The staff were friendly but the service was a little slow. I think they could have done with more staff and so it may not be a problem on another occasion and we weren't in any rush so I've not marked it down on that basis. My mark off my s because it felt a bit like a canteen rather than a top notch eatery. It's quite cold looking, unwelcoming and characterless and I was quite disappointed. I would go for the food again but given a choice is take the atmosphere of The Bell over this any day.

This is the second time we've been here, and just like the first, it didn't disappoint. The staff were all very welcoming and friendly, the food was outstanding and the wine was fairly priced. What we particularly like is that the tables aren't too close together, and are positioned so you don't feel like you are sitting on top of the table next to you. Definitely go again. The only thing I would say is that it is not clear where the entrance is. There is an entrance at the side and a door at the back. In summer we entered via the back as it was open, so thought this was the entrance, but it isn't. There were no signs that we saw, to direct you to the official entrance off the high rd.

Got a last minute booking for New Year's Eve . Fans of the neighbouring Bell, had not tried here before.modern restaurant with large glass conservatory and for new year serving the same menu as the bell. Mix of groups and couples dining so had a buzzy atmosphere without being overcrowded. Nice touch of a welcome glass of champagne & party hats on the table. Set menu price of £75 seemed good value for new year.Small canapés to start, then pate, hay cooked beef, champagne mousse, coffee & homemade petit fours. All well presented & lovely to eat, well priced wine list & champagne not over priced. Attentive & pleasant waiting staff. New year low key but staff made sure everyone had drinks to toast the new year.Went outside after midnight as restaurant is in an elevated position & was able to enjoy a display of local fireworks.Would be happy to celebrate new year here again .Thanks & well done to the staff, this was a far better experience than Roast in Borough Market for new year at half of the cost.

Came for dinner on the 13th November, service was very very slow had been sat at the table for 20 mins before a drinks order had been taken, not once did the waiter or waitress ask how our meal was that night, food was OK nothing special though, and we waited for 30 mins to be asked if we wanted dessert but seriously how long does it take to pick from 4 desserts that would be better suited on the harvester menu, I hope the food in the bell is better than the ostlers, but I'm not going to find out as I won't be coming back and sticking to the blue strawberry from now on

The menu was very limited but the food was very well presented and of excellent quality, although a little on the expensive side. The service could have been better - especially the wine service. Very quiet on my visit with not much atmosphere. No good for vegetarians - only one dish for a non meat or fish eater.

Great food, wine, service... everything above average. As a spin off from The Bell (next door) we were happy to see that there were some improvements in the NEW restaurant, that the old building restricts. My wife and I took my parents there for their first visit and being fellow foodies said they would love to come back.If I had to mark it down on one thing, it would be the selection of meals seems to be wider at the top of the menu that the bottom. For instance, 8 starters, 6 mains and only 4 desserts...But it was all very tasty and came to a total of £200 for 4 diners, with 2 bottles of wine and a couple of other drinks.
