Sunday Roast at the Royal Oak today was lovely as usual, service was brilliant.

A local pub for local people! Bar staff were friendly. Music a little loud and boxing was on the TV and being played over the loud speakers too which made it a bit hard to chat!

My wife and I are moving to Ockendon next week, and we have been visiting this pub now for 5 months now and I have to say the 2 ladies who are running it now, and their very helpful and friendly staff, are doing an excellent job to get this pub up to scratch. The food we had in the had in the bar was very good and at £7 a head very good value. I'm not sure where Trip Happy has been dining, but it is quite normal to pay for your food when you order it in most Pubs, Green King, Wetherspoons, Ember Inns etc. As much as I was impressed with what the new publicans are doing with this pub, I do not think it is in the category of fine dining with bill presented at the end of the evening. (and a much larger bill to boot). Of course there is the Restaurant as well as "Pub Dining" and the menu in there is very good I would say. In fact when my wife and I ate in the main Pub area, we were asked if we wished to select from the main menu, so again, no problems there i think. The lady serving us we very attentive, smart polite and helpful, and made every effort to ensure our experience was perfect. Food is now served 5 days a week, and that is promising. The range of beers, lagers and ciders is as good as most pubs these days, so again no issues there. The new publicans have put new seating and umbrellas in the "garden" and there is entertainment some weekends as well. Flags and bunting adorn the outside at appropriate times so again, great efforts being made. SO, yes, for us, this is a fine "Local Pub" and I have every confidence it will continue getting even better in the coming months. We certainly will be returning, many times.

Thankyou Tracy for looking after us and all the staff for brilliant service and lovely food. We had a Sunday roast including 4 meats!!! With dessert in included. Absolutely fantastic value, and beautiful food. Will definitely visit again when I'm in the area.

Thought we would try it being local, Shame the menu was limited. No starters, main courses not available until you said what you wound like! And having to pay on ordering your food is bizarre! Never in all my experience in hospitality have I been asked to pay before eating, again shame because we would have ordered more drinks. Request for plates to be cleared as 1 person was still eating and 2 children still had food on their plates. From the chalk board info, evening service ends at 1800! I have used this word before, shame as we will not be returning, unless they change their business plan to include the restaurant and not just the bar, live music!!!

Delicious Sunday lunch. 16 quid gets you a choice of 4 meats or a mixture of any of them. The menu doesn't make it clear but the price also includes a dessert, the chocolate gateaux with ice cream was yummy. Highly recommended and worth supporting.

New owners, new atmosphere about the place, and considering its at the end of my Road.. I'll now happily go there. Plans for food in the very near future, all ladies kno how to pull a pint, dog friendly and kid friendly too, smash a Sunday roast and couldn't ask from my local... Nicky and her team provided a beautiful room with a fantastic buffet for a family wake. At short notice she created a classy and comfortable setting. All staff were wonderful attending to the family. Everthing was absolutely perfect! Cannot thank you all enough .

Lovely old timber-framed building. My pint of Old Speckled Hen was excellent. Prices reasonable and service very friendly.

Attended a remembrance meal. Catering was very good.

Spent a pleasant few hours in a quaint old pub which would have been in the middle of nowhere when it was built maybe 300 years ago ? When things were built by eye ! It’s a grade 2 listed building and I’m informed the room I’ve pictured would have housed cattle initially and in later years a room for horses to recover after a day pulling a coach . They had a singer this Saturday doing rat pack songs which was a welcome accompaniment. The staff were lovely and the drinks were a good price . Thanks to all at the Royal Oak for a lovely evening .

Lovely pub Staff very nice and friendly.

This used to be such a lovely pub. It's the only pretty building left in the village in a prime location on the village green. Unfortunately since its reopened it is full of young rowdy youngsters in the beer garden openly dealing drugs. If you sit out the front you can spend all night watching drug deals going on all night on the green. The staff all look miserable which is hardly surprising how badly its run. The pub used to be full of regulars but nobody seems to go there anymore. The closing times are different from the website and it seems the landlady can't wait to get rid of everyone by 10pm at the weekend.

Nice, traditional, little pub, sensible precautions for patrons during Covid. Beautiful building with a nice garden - lovely staff.

More upmarket than the usual pub grub. Food takes longer but is cooked as you order. Delicious and would go again

I went there on a Thursday afternoon with my Ukrainian girlfriend. She is very well dressed and has very high standards. She has a slight accent but has lived here for 20 years and works locally. She was made to feel like some outcast because she was dressed nicely. I heard one member of staff say something about her. Anyway, food was mediocre at best, the tables were dirty and this thing about not taking cards is beyond me. I have been back there with my wife and she loved it. Obviously, I had to make up a cover story as to why I knew about the food etc. On this occasion the food was equally dull though the service was better. Lovely location but abuses the point. My wife and I have since separated and Mischa and I are getting married in July. We won’t be hosting at the Oak

I held my 60th birthday party at The Royal Oak last night (21/12/2019) and cannot thank Jane and her team enough for the service they provided. The dining/function room was perfect as was the buffet and the staff were very attentive and friendly.....a perfect evening, thank you.

This place deserves more than 5 stars. Excellent service, all staff are friendly and very attentive. Food is brilliant, very good value for money, always hot & cooked to perfection. Selection of beers, wines & spirits.... spoilt for choice. The Christmas menu is also a must!!

Always a pleasant drinking experience

A quaint pub with comfortable seating and on site parking. Prices were reasonable however the pub only accepts cash and not card. There is a cash machine a couple of minutes walk from the location.

Dreadful. We were the only people eating at 3pm on a Sunday afternoon (This should have raised alarm bells) We had the 'Super Roast' for £15.95 which was TINY!!! 3 dry small potatoes, wafer thin stone cold meat which looked like it had been taken from a packet of sliced sandwich meat, 1 dry piece of cauliflower and 1 piece of broccoli. Nothing touched on the plate that's how little there was. The service and our treatment from the owner/chef when we complained was ridiculous. That's 8 local people that will never be going back.

Where do I start? We booked a table for 8 people for a birthday and we were the only people in the restaurant. I ordered the ‘super roast’ and I actually laughed when it arrived. I genuinely thought it was a joke... meat that was stone cold and water thin, 3 tiny dry potatoes, a miniature Yorkshire, 1 piece of broccoli and 1 piece of dry cauliflower. The meat was terrible, the only way I can describe it is it looked like sliced sandwich meat from a packet that had been warmed up in an oven (just to dry it out) in an attempt to make it look like roasted meat. We immediately complained and the waitress took them back. She came back 5 mins later with the same plate and one extra potato! The meat had clearly been microwaved as well. She said she was sorry and that she’ll take one of the roasts off the bill. We were hungry and reluctantly ate them. It was a very poor meal and we’d agreed we’d never go back. When the bill came up it hadn’t been reduced and when we questioned the waitress she said the owner said NO don’t take it off. I was livid and asked to speak to her so the waitress went off. She came back 5 mins later and simply said ok, we’ll take one roast off... no apology or anything. Terrible food, terrible service, way over priced, never ever going back. Would strongly recommend you don’t put yourself through for what we did!!!!

Food was absolutely shocking. Food was served cold, the meat was processed meat and of poor quality. I did wonder why we were the only people in the restaurant area, I now know why.

Phoned day before hoping to get a table, and could have any time we wanted, first warning. When we arrived there was 2 couples in the bar area and the restaurant was empty, should have left then.. Was seated and handed a menu and could hear staff bickering loudly and one of the staff asked another where the sugar sachets were for the tea and was told 2 get some from kitchen in a cup because they didn't have any. Ordered and another couple came in, waitress who was taking their order was shouted at from across the restaurant by same woman who couldn't find the sugar and was also shouting commonly from behind the bar too. My husbands pate come out with cold toast that had possibly been sitting a while, my bread had not butter but spread, small amount of possibly iceland prawns and not even enough sauce to wet the lettuce, not what you would expect for the price of it. Yes we should have cancelled dinner and left then as we discussed. Dinner came, we both had parsnips that were not on the menu and my husband request only peas, the beef was fridge cold, there was a runner bean in my gravy, neither of us had runner beans as they werent on the menu and was told it was in the stock, when was runner beans last on the menu we wondered, the Yorkshire pudding was flat as a Frisby, the potato's were very nice. My husband coulnt eat his dinner, the waitress apologised and offered no refund for his dinner and saying they had a new chef as the previous chef was too posh for South ockendon, explained why i had previously enjoyed eating there and other reviews, we paid and left very disappointed and will definetly not be going back.

Group of 7 and dog were made welcome . We had good proper pub grub and the beer drinkers had well kept Golden Hen ale.

Visited the royal Oak a few Sunday's back for a spot of lunch. i used to frequent this public house on a regular basis but as you do, I drifted away, so first time back for me in a while. The restaurant is run separately from the pub and they are trying hard to make a go of it. We just had a main course and some drinks and whilst the others enjoyed their meals I was left a little flat as the fish (I think it was SeaBass from memory) I had ordered was somewhat dry which was a real shame. Service was good and attentive and value for money was ok. i would give it another go as I'm sure this was just a blip.

We ate here last night after a few beers and wow I was impressed. Me and my wife are newish vegetarians and sometimes it’s very difficult to eat out and enjoy it. There was only one vegetarian item on the menu which is understandable for a pub this size, however the waitress told us they didn’t have any. She went back in to speak to the chef and he come out with her and said he can go get some quorn mince and make some burgers for us. It turns out the chef was vegetarian and we were so happy he was so helpful. The burger come out and wow it was amazing. So amazing that we asked to see him after to see how he managed to make it so well. Lovely place we will definitely eat in again. Our experience is totally down to the chef and the waitress. The waitress was new and she was so helpful and couldn’t do enough and was really friendly.

Took my 88 year old mother there, all staff very attentive & food excellent.

We used to visit quite often as they did a nice Sunday lunch, we recently visited after a year and realised why we hadn’t been more recently. Unfortunately the quality of the food is not what it was, it is not fresh and appears to have been absolutely blitzed in the microwave before being brought out. Sunday lunch isn’t extortionate but it is not cheap so would expect better quality especially as it’s not a huge restaurant serving a large amount of guests at any one time.

What a lovely pub. Great food, lovely waitress and lovely sofas to relax and have a nice glass of wine. Highly recommended.

This was my second visit to this lovely pub. Both times I had lunch with friends and both times it was fabulous. Lovely cosy pub, friendly waitress and a great chef with a good selection of dishes. This is a lovely place to have lunch and then sit with a drink on the lovely sofa. It has a lovely little garden which will be lovely in the summer. Highly recommended.

Love this pub good has always been good and out recent visit was no different. New menu has tapas options which were delicious and for lunch made a lovely change good presentation. Although wad only one food waitress and there were 2 quite large parties she did a great job. Food came in good time and service was attentive will be back and would definitely recommend.

13 of us today and the service was very good. Our waitress was really nice, helpful and nothing was too much trouble. The food was excellent (it never used to be so clearly a change for the better). With ladt minute notice they catered for our vegan guests too. Thank you for making my birthday gathering nice.

Had a great Sunday lunch a couple of weeks ago, the food served up by Scot the Chef is faultless, a great place to go to for food. A great public house with a great atmosphere.

Visited here last Thurs. £10 for 3 courses could not expect more. Food was excellent, service genial and humour full. The only downside of the evening was a table in close vicinity who were intent on complaining. Will definitely go back Paul and Pat

Went there for a meal this evening 28th feb 2019 started of my partner called to make a booking for 2 people great then 2 others joined us so phoned to change to 4 people lady who answered said kitchen shut ?? Spoke with another lady said was ok for 4 people not great communication.ordered drinks at the bar one of the bar staff didnt no what a good dry wine was nice bar staff not.then was meal time 3 courses for £10 good deal as i thought but tonight's courses mainly fish not there fault as i dont like fish. but 3 of us had it while i ordered off the main menu.while the £10 menu was small portions fine but hard starter hard sweet and soup for the main meal not what I would call great for £10

We visited for a drink, the menu seemed a bit too rich, we will try it later.

Having eaten here a couple of times with family and friends, I cannot praise the chef and staff enough. Always a warm friendly greeting, from the servers, taking our coats and helping with our food choices. The menus are new, with a healthy choice of dishes, and freshly cooked to order and taste delicious. I have been served by both Sue and Tracey, and both ladies are friendly and helpful, giving recommendations when asked and being very attentive. Well done to the staff at The Royal Oak, I highly recommend

Lovely country pub, full of character. Unfortunately the live music was far too loud to have a conversation. It'd been great if there had been somewhere quieter. Definitely going to tryout the restaurant.

We ate here on Sunday 27 January 2019. We booked the Royal Oak as it looked good for a family lunch, and was close to the M25, and dog friendly . We came from Deal, Harrow and Central London. We had a table in the old medieval hall part of the pub - as dogs are not allowed in the dining room. We were shown to our table and served drinks within minutes of arriving.

We booked here for a Sunday family lunch, going on recommendations that they had a new cook.

Such a beautiful quaint country pub, a real gem, with fabulous staff, so very clean and wonderful food. A beautiful beer garden to relax when the sun is out. I had my mums wake here to, Mum would of really lived the day, they even got a cocktailtender in for the evening. Highly recommended for family, sport and any other social events.

There is now a proper chef at the Royal Oak pub. We have eaten there twice and each time the food has been great. The chef came out for us to compliment him, and told us he cooked everything fresh, where he sourced his vegetables and meat, he even makes his own ice cream!It is such a refreshing change to have a restaurant nearby that doesn't depend on fast food and catering packs! I have been disappointed in the Royal Oak's restaurant before now, so it is fantastic to have a good chef at long last!

Mussels amazing ! As good as I’ve had anywhere. Sunday roast superb, lovely aged forerib cooked to perfection.
