Coeliacs? Take your chances! Love Kew. Members for years. First visit since becoming Coeliac. No labelled GF options. On investigation, this was not obvious, some salads, were available, but were self service and cross-contamination was rife. Assistant didn't initially understand this but kindly went and got me some fresh from the kitchen. No cakes or sandwiches were available in any restaurant. Disappointing really.

If you're not like the folks who visit Kew with a picnic basket in tow then your dining options are limited and most likely you'll end up having a meal in the Orangery. A beautiful building re-purposed as a cafeteria-style, self-service dining hall. I actually thought it was quite cool. The inner flow of people could be controlled a little better especially during busy periods. It was confusing trying to locate clean trays and folks kept asking staff for cutlery. Some signage and proper stands for cutlery and trays should be employed. The little flimsy wooden cutlery unfortunately have been introduced here which is great for the environment but not great for cutting pies and shoveling enough food in a mouthful. There are meat & fish meals for £14.95 and vegetarian for £13.95 which comes with a starch base and two sides. We had one fish strew and a Harissa roasted chicken. I skipped the rice and asked if I could have a third side instead. I loved that this was possible! The roast butternut squash and glazed aubergine were excellent; tasty & healthy! Also loved the corn on the cob! Sure it's a little pricey but you must remember where you are and where the money goes. It helps us all and mother earth so folks either need to walk with a sandwich or cease the grumbling. The tables were dirty and we cleaned them ourselves, as was the floor in places where folks tread on food. So more attention and care if needed. During our time there we didn't see anyone come to sanitize and wipe down any tables. Someone should be employed to do this constantly.

Considering the beautiful surroundings, the Orangery is a big let down. Hugely overpriced, food at room temperature for lengthy periods of time, one shot of coffee as standard or forced to buy a bucket sized cup. Hot food looked unappetising, size of plates suitable for a small not very hungry child. Whoever has this concession is trading on a captive audience. Poor choice of sandwiches but at least they were refrigerated, with astronomical mark up. Next time will take will take a beautifully prepared lunch in a cold box and eat outside, which is a shame as we like to support Kew . In essence a rip off.

Obviously the Orangery is a fabulous and unique location. Five years and one million pounds later, I wonder what actually changed. But that's actually good. It's all brilliant. Except for the scones and the tea. Having afternoon tea at such a royal place - and at such an elevated price - you would except a minimal knowledge about tea brewing. Just throwing the loose tea into a pot and leave the leaves there is awful - unless you like your second cup of tea bitter and undrinkable. The same with the scones. They were wonderful five years ago - served with clotted cream and jam in separate bowls. Now they appear prefabricated with cream and jam clotted on top of the scones hours ago. Pure sacrilege in God's own country of high tea and scones, right? Please call me, when you're back on track - and I'll be back any time. Btw. your staff is wonderful. Kudos to the excellent Egyptian moudir kabeer and to the young British lady, who kindly noted - apparently again again - the abuse of the traditional tea and scones heritage. God Save the King, His tea and His scones!

Underwhelming experience yesterday when we popped in for a mid-morning coffee and snack :( The interior of the building is visually very lovely and filled with light as it was a clear day but, aesthetics aside, it was a really disappointing experience. The prices are very high - £4.30 for a smallish can of some obscure fizzy drink! £4.50 for a slice of cake, not guaranteed you will get a generous portion as they appear to have been unevenly cut, freshly-pressed apple/orange juice at £3.75 which you may think 'fair enough' as it's fresh but the price is for a small plastic cup filled two-thirds, my son's face when he saw it was a picture indeed. The layout for serving is not great. Why not have the tills in the first main serving counter hall where you take your trays? Instead, you choose your food and drinks, then have to go through to the doorway between the two spaces where the tills are based. Nonsensical. Additionally, what was really annoying was by these tills they have cheaper options of biscuits/snacks but it's too late to choose these as you have already made your selection from the more expensive items in the serving hall! Tsk. The cutlery and condiments/sweeteners were also very hard to locate, not in the serving hall nor next to the tills where it would be rational to have them but hidden away in a separate section where the tray trolleys are located. My daughter had the chocolate cookie which we all thought was great, however my oaty cranberry version was over-baked and extremely hard. My husband's scone was fine with additional Tiptree jam and Rhoda's clotted cream. Our coffees - a flat white and a small latte - were indistinguishable and a poor offering. Ugh. I was expecting a better standard of operations from Kew to be honest and I can see by previous reviews, I'm not the only one!

Supposedly the middle ground of options for Kew, I think I would have rather eaten the children's pizza at the Family Kitchen than eat anything at The Orangery ever again. The Kew website states that all cafes and restaurants close at 3pm, and we arrived at 2:20pm. There was minimal food remaining, all of which had clearly been left languishing and was in a terrible state. We were abruptly informed by two very rude members of staff that all food stops at 2:30pm, and the meagre offerings of expensive sandwiches and items left behind started to be quickly scooped up so that the continuing stream of customers still coming into the cafe could not purchase them. At this point, another team member then brought out a brand new plate of sausage rolls and left them on the Deli side. The seating area was filthy and each member of staff looked like they would rather plunge themselves into the freezing cold lake in front of the Palm House than work at The Orangery. Don't bother.

On a old, rainy day in December there was hardly anyone here - which was wonderful, because this beautiful space is often chaotic on busier days. On the upside - they have started making proper espresso coffee agai rather than relying on an automated machine. On the downside, the cappuccino was pretty tasteless - and they have NO GLUTEN FREE CAKES! In this day and age, this is ridiculous. Compared with the offerings at continental, the catering here is .... pretty feeble.

We have been to the Orangery for a Sunday lunch twice recently. the roast beef was amazing; tender and so incredibly tasty. It came with roasted vegetables and broccoli all very delicious, Yorkshire pudding and an excellent beef gravy. We were so impressed that we came back the following week for more. The serving staff were particularly patient with us as my partner has dementia and I was trying to organise both of us. This week the weather isn't good but we are going again next Sunday to enjoy the autumn colours and tuck in to a perfect roast dinner. How does the chef cook such tender and yummy beef?

Not sure where to start really. I know it can be difficult to keep wasps out, BUT having sweet fruity cakes on a completely open display is not a good idea. barely covered with bits of plastic sheeting, there were multiple wasps all underneath the sheets and tucking into the cakes. NOT appealing! The cost of coffee (note, plus extra charge for the cup - like what are you going to put it in, really!) was very steep for what you got, but more importantly the quality was very poor too. Bring a picnic and your own drinks is my recommendation.

Really disappointing to see that this is still an embarrassment to Kew. Please do fix it! All we want is slick service with a decent choice of food. Neither is in evidence here: Late Sunday morning in the school hols had one person making coffee with one person on the separate till. Two queues seems unnecessary. I had intended to eat, but the range was limited and unattractive. Bluntly, you could almost charge what you wanted to this well heeled captive clientele, but you simply have to sharpen up your offering.

We visited Kew Gardens and thought that we would treat ourselves to a hot meal at lunchtime. To summarise the Orangery, the few staff that are actually visible are miserable. The place feels dirty, pigeons strutting about picking up dropped food. The food is below average and ridiculously priced £5.75 for a sausage roll no more than 3 inches long,a bottle of beer nearly £8,no justification for those prices. The hot food was warm and dripping in oil.,the vegetables on offer were obviously undercooked. The water dispenser dripped out water which meant that your lukewarm food then became cold because it took so long to get a cup of water. The toilets were filthy. The cake we had was only just defrosted and cold in the middle. You would do better to visit outside of Kew if you are eating and give your hard earned money to an eatery that deserves it.No excuses Kew, a lot of improvement needed.

Don’t buy a sandwich here. Seriously, just don’t. £6.50 for a soggy (though allegedly toasted) pesto, basil and mozzarella sandwich on brown bread that was absolutely tasteless. On examination, this was explained by the fact that the pesto, smeared liberally over the large, un-toasted half, was accompanied by two tiny slices of mozzarella that barely covered a third of it and one - yes ONE piece of tired basil. On reflection, I think there was supposed to be tomato in there too but I didn’t find any. I wasn’t looking for a gourmet meal, just something to fill a hole after a good walk around the gardens. But this was horrible and were it not for a chance to recover in one of the nicest bits of the gardens, I’d have gone home fuming. Seriously Kew, you should be able to do better than this.

Taken for a day out treat by friends but could not believe how bland tasting and uninspiring the food choices were - the quiche was a solid lump of cold, tasteless jelly. 3 small scoops of bland/unseasoned salads squished into the smallest of plastic bowls (a request for a plate was denied!) can set you back £7. Then £4.15 for a mini mass produced cardboard loaf cake - shocking! What a terrible waste of opportunity here to provide customers/visitors with an experience to match the wonderful surroundings. Unfortunately, the choice was minimal and there was no gluten free option for my sister. We all ordered toasties, I’m loathed to use the word ‘toast’ as these where soggy and cold in the centre. Collectively, we spent over £70 on very poor quality food and it left us feeling sick for the rest of the day.The staff had no idea how to manage the covid sage tables and allocated one that was already taken. Went in for coffee and self-service has been taken to a whole new level of meaning: you really do have to do everything yourself! But you have no control over the strength of your coffee and no option of hot milk to go with it. Over priced considering there is absolutely no service provided.Later we went back for lunch (they have you captive) and were pleased to see that at least the food was being served on to plates by the staff. Unfortunately there was a long queue and only one person serving. However she was faster than the one and one half till operators (one or other was always leaving their till to help a customer). At least the lady serving the food had the nous to realise that if she kept serving at the same rate our food would become cold before we paid, so she explained that she would stop until the till queue had reduced. Even so our food was only luke warm! The only good point was that the food was delicious except for the sprouts which were raw.Summary: good food spoiled by lack of service and high prices.

We visited Kew Gardens yesterday and decided to go for a coffee break in the afternoon at the Orangery. We were shocked to see how much the cakes and refreshments were, we couldn't afford to have 2 slices of cake as it would of cost us just under £10 not including the coffee! There is a self service coffee machine which doesn't give you a full mug of coffee. The table was sticky so we moved 3 times but all the tables inside were sticky, the floor was not clean and there were pigeons walking around your feet!! Even the furniture was not clean, we gave up and sat outside in the heat to finish up as quickly as we could. The customers next to us were complaining as they were served marmalade with their cream tea apparently they had run out of strawberry jam. Really unpleasant experience and not a good representation of Kew Gardens at all!

I came here for a late lunch which ended up at 4:30pm! Nothing fresh available: the wraps and a sandwiches looked seriously past their shelf-life. No other non-sweet food available, although there were a few scones and cakes. I was looking for something nutritious and obviously this is not the place for that. Sugar in everything! I chose a tiny “Health Bar” (1.5 cm square) and a cup of normal tea which came to £5.25. A lot. Then I produced my membership card expecting 10% off and was told that only applies to the cafés in Kew Gardens. This is a restaurant!!! Ludicrous. Do not venture inside except to have a look at the pretty interior.

Terrible. Understaffed, glacially slow service, meagre portions of almost-cold "full" english breakfast (half a slice of black pudding?!). Avoid.

We had a nice lunch here and the cake, Although expensive, was very good. They only sell water in cans which is not great if you want to take something around the gardens with you in the hot weather. The building itself is noteworthy so it is a nice place to eat.

Poor expensive food with very little choice at 3.30pm. Sticky tables and litter lying around. It feels like they have a captive audience and barely provide a service.

When we visited Kew Gardens we went to the Orangey for coffee. We both had Americano coffees and a Portuguese custard tart each. The coffee and tarts were good.

the Orangery is our favourite place to eat in Kew. There is always a great selection of food and we love sitting inside or on the terrace.

Expensive, unwholesome food in a lovely setting. an expensive ham sandwich lacked any filling apart from a miserly piece of ham trapped between 2 slices of plain white bread. The self serve coffee is just not right. What a dreadful advertisement for all the splendours of Kew Gardens

Before embarking on the trek of Kew Gardens as a party of four adults we visited the Orangery Restaurant for a cup of coffee and decided to have a scone too just to keep the hunger pangs at bay. Whilst warm and fresh they were nothing out of the ordinary and 4 scones alone were nearly £17.

Having visited the Kensington Palace Orangery several years ago, my Mum and I were really excited to treat ourselves to a lunch at the Orangery in Kew Gardens. The gardens are beautiful and the building is very impressive, but the cafe itself was completely inadequate for the location. It is literally a cafeteria inside a beautiful building, where you have to take the tray around yourself and the tea is served in paper cups, the food on cardboard plates etc. And despite the very lacklustre nature of the cafe, it was still rather expensive. We had a small slice of quiche (no salad on the side) and a bowl of soup with a slice of bread and it cost well over ten pounds.

Wife and I had 2 scones, 2 jams, 2 creams and 2 teas for £13. There tasted fine, just all bought in items, nothing special but the prices were. Even the pot of tea is size of a mug, everything is smaller or charged more. Just a bit of a RIP off. Bring your own food or just arrive at openning time and have late lunch elsewhere.

My wife, adult daughter and I ate a late lunch (3pm) here on a Monday in mid-April 2019. We were in Kew Gardens for the afternoon and needed sustenance. We bought a crab with mayo sandwich, the vegan mushroom bourguignon and a piece of the coconut and pineapple cake and a piece of pear and almond cake. We then split these dishes among the three of is. There was plenty of food and it was quite tasty. The cakes were particularly good. Our meal cost us £37 and, while pricey, was satisfying.

When visiting a place like Kew Gardens which has an international reputation, one would expect the available food(s) to be first class.

We both had soup and sandwich. The French onion soup was probably the worst soup I had ever tasted. There were onions in it but that's where the similarity ended. The baguette was undercooked and there was very little filling. The bread on my wife's sandwich was stale. I would recommend bringing a packed lunch

Had a small snack here. Wide selection of hot and cold meals, alcoholic and non-alcoholic meals. Prices are a bit steep, but you're supporting the Kew Foundation and thus gardens with your purchases. The view from the terrace is very nice.

We visited for coffee; the coffee itself is OK and there is a great choice of cakes BUT despite notices on every surface about allergies, the list of food information produced by a member of staff had details of only two of the cakes on sale. Why bother making a song and dance about allergy information if you don't actually have the relevant info?! The seating area itself was dreadful - really dirty. We were there at 10.45 and it had only been open since 10 so really no excuse; the floors were dirty and the chairs and sofas were filthy.

Busy place with lot of hungry visitors. I had a main (mexican chicken with veg and rice). Food looks nice and chefs look proper but man this food (£15!) is bland with no spices, rice overcooked but the broccoli would have loved a little more time in the steamer. The diningarea is inside the orangery or outside... Feels messy with cheap looking furniture scattered all around.

We had a great soup and sandwich for under £8 which was great stop for lunch. They also had a selection of salads and hot meals. Nice building close to place. The only negative would be the use of the chairs on the stone floors. It makes it very loud snide with the scrapping of the chairs every time someone gets up or sits down.

The prices in this cafe are outrageous. £5.50 for a chicken sandwich (£3 M&S;), £2 for a bag of crisps (65p Sainsburys), £6 for a small slice of quiche (£2.50 Waitrose for a whole quiche) etc etc. A family of four could reasonably expect to pay upwards of £50 for a lunch that could be had for much better quality by stopping at a supermarket en route. I get that Kew is permanently cash-strapped -- even more so under this government -- and needs to raise revenues wherever possible. However, hosing the families, seniors and tourists (most of the visitors) once they are inside the gates speaks of disrespect. Wouldn't it be more equitable to add a couple of quid to the ticket price?

I see little justification for charging these prices. 13 pounds for a small main course (March 2019). The beef stew was nice but a Mexican chicken was tasteless. I’d recommend bringing a packed lunch and saving your money. This is basically a self serve cafe.

The roast dinner whilst not cheap it was well cooked with decent ingredients and plentiful quantity. It was very pleasant. If it was a couple of quid cheaper per head it would have been 5 stars.

I know cafes in attractions tend to be a little pricier than normal, but this cafe is extortionate! The food is overpriced and a cup of tea was £2.35 for what can only be described as an expresso sized cup. Daylight robbery!

Firstly the cafetiere was packed and there was hardly any seating. It appeared that most of the customers were not eating a lot and were just sitting at the tables chatting. I'm not surprised they were not eating much because the food (and drinks) are vastly overpriced, it's another example of the catering industry taking advantage of their customers. The coffee was luke warm, weak and tasteless (the cup was only two thirds full). The food is very expensive, a steak and ale pie was £11.50 and a small piece of cake at least £4.50, suffice to say I only had a coffee (well I think it was coffee) and I can safely say I won't be going to the Orangery again. It was a shame really because the gardens and Orchid Festival was enjoyable.

The menu that day was caribbean, and although busy and quite crowded we managed to find a wonderful seat in one of the wonderful and staggeringly high windows in the sun. We enjoyed the wonderful chicken stew and a glass of wine. The style is buffet and there is seating out on the patio and grass

The place itself looks nice. Staff are a bit vacant or uninterested? Ordered an egg brunch bap - for £4.80 I was expecting lovely artisan sourdough something but this was a super cheap white bap - if you typically struggle with digesting bread stay far away form this. It's just poor quality. Sausage roll was oily - edible but did not sit well afterwards. Such a shame as the food does not reflect the overall look and feel of the place. Expected far more. Will not be returning.

Just wow! Have ordered a takeaway on a few occasion from here and it has not disappointed. The pizza is magnificent. Although the tiramisu portion is big it is too creamy and lacks that coffee hit! But the pizza will have me placing my next order soon!!!
