The Orange Tree in South Lakeland

We stayed in Kirkby Lonsdale and wanted somewhere near to our accommodation to eat on the first night. This pub was opposite our holiday home and after reading some reviews we wondered if it would be any good! It was really good!! Service was good, food was served fresh and hot - very tasty, can recommend the homemade lasagne!! There was a really buzzing atmosphere in the pub-full of locals and tourists. It’s not gourmet or 5 star but it does just the job - lovely home made food and a good selection of beers and ales. Pub is also dog friendly.

The Orange Tree is a lovely historic English Pub, which serves a wide range of cask ales mainly from the Kirkby Lonsdale Brewery. Friendly staff and good service. Well worth a visit.

Family meal. Would have rated higher but it was very cold, we all kept our coats on. Very old building with very narrow seating in alcoves.

What can I say? What a pub. Fantastic place to stay; eat and drink. Staff are very friendly and make you feel at home. Stayed for my partners birthday, and they left a little present in our bedroom. Partner was really made up. Will definitely be going back later in the year. Would highly recommend it to anyone. Mr Morris

We had a fabulous evening meal here. Great portions. 1 scampi, 1 lasagne & 1 mixed grill for two.

Local couple Bit disappointed to be honest, pub was very cold no log fire as advertised and in January one would expect it to be lit. Ordered two burgers with two pints of KL , advertised on the wall board at £13.95 each on a Tuesday (which it was) but was charged normal menu price so £31.30. Only £3.40 difference so obviously not going to break the bank , but that’s not the point . Staff wer friendly and burger was very tasty (not coming with chips was a surprise though) but just makes you leaving the establishment feeling a bit let down…and hungry.

The first time here, Tuesday afternoon, empty but gentleman behind the bar was very friendly. Nice decor in old pub, lots of rugby 🏉 pictures which we like. We have not tried food, but all in all, it's a good stop off point.

Stunning traditional pub, friendly staff, amazing burgers. The range of locally brewed real ales are well worth trying.

Recommended to this pub by local shopkeeper. On entering thought it looked like good old fashioned pub. Friendly landlord/manager. Only a few people in at 12.30pm. We both ordered Gammon with chips eggs pineapple and peas. I got a pint from the bar that the manager changed with apologies when I noticed that it remained cloudy. The food arrived quickly and when we looked at our plates we asked if it was Gammon as it was thinly sliced and looked cold. The managed said that's how we serve it! New one on us. We decided not to complain as we were a bit pushed for time. After we had been eating for a few minutes the manager came and said my mistake- 'senior moment' and offered to replace it but we said not enough time. He offered us a free drink each that we refused. Despite this about 5 minutes later he brought us half of beer each! The chips were lovely, the eggs were good but the ham wasn't the best. Sliced too thin and suffered with the fried eggs being placed on top of it. Very disappointed that we didn't get what we ordered and were charged £36 for meals we didn't want including pint and half of beer. We were just visiting the area and are not likely to be over this way soon but if we are we shall try one of the other 6 pubs in the immediate area.

Just had a glorious 2 nights here with my good wife..absolutely superb in every way. .. food and beer was fantastic..room and bathroom brilliant..love it here and coming again..

This is a cracking pub that serves solid great tasting food. Fish and chips here are epic! The beer is kept in great condition and its a place I go to whenever we visit KL. A gem of a pub in a nice location.

Amazing food - absolutely perfect. We didn't eat anywhere else on our weekend away! Great staff - so friendly and welcoming. A lovely place to spend the evening. We can't praise this pub highly enough. Just pop in, and you will be very happy you did :-)

Local couple, been here many times in the past. Disappointing, poor service, average food, not offered desert or coffee. After a considerable time past while they prepped for breakfast service we asked to see the duty manager, we were told that he was busy washing up and that if we wanted to speak to him we would have to go and stand by the kitchen door. This was a Saturday night & we were the only people left in the restaurant. Our table was booked for 8pm & this was just after 9pm.

I been visiting here from the netherlands went to grab something to eat here last night me and my mate had the starter palet and it was amazing the bbq sauce is so unbelievably delicious and the chicken omg its amazing actually mouth watering food here deffo coming back to england just to grab a other bite here

Traditional old pub, young staff who are very efficient. Good choice of beers, unfortunately the two glasses of wine my other half had were not good quality, as were the fish and chips, Monday night special at £13.95, unfortunately the batter wasn't very nice and the chips felt like they'd been reheated a couple of times.

Someone in the kitchen really knows what they are doing here. Although the ingredients were simple, they were cooked to perfection. The best sweet potato fries I have had and the gammon wasn't too salty.

Stayed for 2 nights in September on a school reunion. I left my pill box in my room (they contained the pills to control my cancer). The pub sent it back to me in a jiffy bag, not asking for any postage payment (£4.15). What a wonderful set of people own/work there. Thank you so much. Great pub, great room, great beer and food.

Short stay in Kirkby Lonsdale and ate here twice. Tuesday night was build a burger and it was great. Butterfly chicken breast with 3 additional toppings was delicious. Thursday night I had really good steak with a stilton and mushroom sauce. Sometimes you only know it's Stilton because it says it on the menu but this had a good balance of flavour and chunks of mushroom. Service was prompt without being rushed and staff friendly and polite. Overall a very pleasant experience.

Never been more disappointed. Booked for my dads 60th birthday having been before and enjoyed! 2 Starters came out 10 minutes before the rest, already off to a bad start. Starters were ok but nothing overly special. Time for the mains… Cumberland sausage looked cremated, 3 sirloin steaks supposed to be cooked medium rare were closer to blue. Buttermilk chicken burger had 2 tiny pieces of chicken in, some sad looking lettuce and some Mayo in a bun. Having an 18 month old with us, we went to ask where the baby changing facilities were. Only to be told the best they could provide was a changing mat to be placed on the female toilets floor. Mentioned complaints to a staff member who seemed mortified and tried her best for us but was unable to rectify any of the issues. Having planned to have deserts, we changed our minds and just paid and left. To top it off, the following morning the 18 month old of our party is vomiting following his meal of the kids fish and chips. All in all, a very disappointing experience for what was supposed to be a lovely milestone birthday celebration. Will not ever be returning.

Once meal ordering difficulties were resolved - delivered 2 out of 4 cold hot side orders & 2 out of 5 wrong meals, the food itself was fairly good. 3 of these errors were fairly quickly sorted but one replacement meal took around 15mins by which time 4 of our party had finished their meals. No real apology received beyond blaming the faults on kitchen & staffing challenges arising owing to them being busy! Bringing our disappointing experience to their attention via email 24hrs after dining with them, after the elapse of a further 72hrs, a response is still awaited!

The best steaks in town. Wednesday night is steak night. Good ales on tap. Excellent and attentive bar and restuarant staff.

On entering The Orange Tree you are met by a team of staff who are friendly, attentive and professional.The table service was really quick for both food and drinks. Just back from a fantastic stay at The Orange Tree, Kirby Lonsdale. We took advantage of the stay 2 nights and 3rd night free, this was was excellent value for money, especially as it includes a really good breakfast. They have a range of rooms to suit everyone. Staff are friendly, efficient and hard working. Special mention to wonderful Dan and Michael, who went above and beyond when we all (8 of us) arrived back at the hotel as they were starting to shut up. They helped keep the party going and catered to our needs. The rooms were great. lovely decor, clean, comfortable and had all we needed in them. Breakfast was fantastic, plentiful and very tasty. Good quality produce and very friendly helpful staff. We ate a couple of times in the pub and the food was good and fairly priced.

Old traditional pub. Ate here twice. This was recommended to us by a local so booked when we arrived for that night. Had chicken which was ok, the sauce was not bbq though. My husband had smoked burger which he loved. Could not get in anywhere Wednesday night so we returned and the young lads managed to book us in. We had the best fish n chips we’ve eaten for years!!

Visited with the family on a Wednesday, which happened to be a steak night, so went for the Sirloin steak. It really was delicious. Pleasant pub and excellent grub. One of the few places in town that we could walk-in without a booking but don’t let that concern you. Like most hospitality places suffering post-COVID and Brexit, young inexperienced staff did their best to be welcoming, take orders and deliver drinks and food to the table efficiently and friendly. We both had the (rump) steak which came to the table on sizzling hot dishes shaped like a cow. Unfortunately we both burnt ourselves on the hot metal dish where one small part of the wooden plate holder doesn’t offer much buffer but wasn’t serious. The steak was great, sweet potato fries excellent and overall attentive service

Very busy popular pub in nice surroundings, evening meal and breakfast spot on and staff friendly and very helpful. Short walk into the village for a look around.Rooms a little dated but clean and suitable for an odd night or two, only niggle would be the shower not on the wall so had to hold the shower head and no shower curtain so water everywhere

We are visiting KL as a family and has read the reviews prior to booking. Service was very slow and we finally interrupted one of the waiters walking past our table for the umpteenth time if he minded taking our drinks and starters orders? This was the theme for all subsequent orders- very poor serviceA very basic pub menu, very little thought, if any, has gone into it at all. This pub obviously doesn’t feel the need to offer something different in food or service!Out bruchette bread was burnt making it inedible, it was served all the same which really annoyed me. If the chef cannot cook a piece of toast without burning what had we let ourselves in for?? Everything else we ate was bland, no frills, no care taken in presenting the food, no wow factor in anything that was served. Minimum effort in everything they do!Staff were young and too few, apparently incapable of dealing with the number of tables requiring service effectively. This was our first family meal together for a very long time and was instantly forgettable. The pub trade has been screaming out for changes in lockdown rules to get clients back to support them, this visit was a stark reminder of how some of our pubs will continue to serve/treat customers badly and offer poor value - this gives us very little reason to ever return.

My wife and I visited The Orange Tree on Sunday 11th July for some food and a pint. The food was spot on and the Monumental Blonde was excellent. The staff were all very young, compared to us, and absolutely bob on, they were very attentive, quick off the mark and very well trained. Nice to see an establishment that gets everything right. Lovely location, great pub and when we get the chance we will be up and staying there for a few days.

This gem of a place was so beautiful, the host and staff really made an effort to make use and our very cheeky labrador feel right at home. All staff were friendly and our breakfast was very tasty!! The room was stunning with a beautiful window looking onto gardens and the street below. All bedding and the amazing bathroom was clean with hand sanitation and mask packs provided which in our current climate I thought was a brilliant idea. Overall the hotel had a lovely friendly feel about it that reflects on this family run business and the beautiful people of Kirkby Longdale. Thank you so much for our amazing stay what was meant to be one night turned into four nights we simply didn't want to leave! We are so looking forward to visiting again. Excellent service and the food was delicious. Friends had rib-eye steak and I had gammon, all of which was fabulous. Good value for money and the onion rings we very tasty., would definitely go back.

Booked a table here for an evening meal, requested a table with space for a pram, when arrived got put on a tiny bar table with barely enough room for the pram and completely blocked the table next to us so nobody could get out. Given no menus on arrival and nobody came to take our drinks order for 30mins so tried to order drinks through the app, then told that the order hadn’t been received enough though had an email confirmation and money left bank account, after around 10mins of backwards and forwards finally got drinks but still no menus. Ended up leaving due to awkward table for a baby/pram, poor and slow service, didn’t even drink drinks as couldn’t leave fast enough. Would not recommend especially if you are visiting with a family

We boked to dine here on a Saturday night after reading the great reviews and knowing it was dog friendly. We were seated on quite a small round table for 2 in the bar and given menus which were extensive in choice, and also the bar is extensive with a wide range of beers and wines. The OH had a chicken burger which he said was fantastic and I had a rump steak with blue cheese sauce which was served on a sizzle platter and was really tasty. It became a slight problem with the table size though as my meal came across 3 dishes which when paired with another main, drinks, condiments etc meant we were having to place things in creative places like on the fireplace! The staff were friendly and helpful and there was plenty of them so you were never waiting if you needed something - we would recommend and return.

We went for our evening meal at the orange tree. On arriving we were shown into a booth. The orange tree has a nice covid friendly sign outside basically saying, paraphrased, abide by the rules or we'll ask you to leave, which was a welcome message for us. It didn't seem to be quite so j equivocal in practice the family of 6 in front of us all without masks and not hand sanitizing but they were sat well away from us so all was well. The service was quick, good drinks suggestions and the food came quickly. I wasn't terribly hungry so ordered the simple burger and dirty fries. We also had chilli and nachos. When the food came it was plentiful! The chilli was excellent and thoroughly enjoyed as we're the nachos, a be at big tray of them with no skimping on the sauces. The burger was nice, well cooked, seasoned and tasty but the star of the show and a meal in it's own right were the dirty fries. A tray of fries, smothered in generous helpings of pulled bab pork and then red Leicester cheese. They were just fabulous And next time I'll just have them and nothing else. Watching the other meals go out they were all good sized hearty plates, with the Gammon and egg and the excellent value haddock and chips standing out.The surroundings themselves were clean and tidy, the seats a little comfortable but all of this was made up for with the great value classic pub food. I was going to give 4 stars but on reflection, it was cracking value and all very tasty so 5 stars it is!

The chilli con carne is the best I have tasted anywhere in the world and I love the dish. It’s got that authentic smokey flavour that you rarely find outside of Mexico. We stayed the night, the rooms are large, clean and light and the breakfast huge !The staff are super helpful and very friendly and it’s not expensive, we will be staying here again when we next visit this lovely village.

7pm on an autumnal Monday evening and you might think business would be quiet.Wrong,this place was busy,busy,busy with every table occupied,all pre-booked and frenetic staff running hither and thither.So many people cant be wrong and they were not.The reasonably priced food was excellent in terms of quality and quantity and far better than the £15 very average pie in the market square/However i have to echo the sentiments of a previous reviewer that in spite of management protestations to the contrary,there was no evidence of re-useable menus,condiments,tables being sanitised,wiped down or cleaned.Some of the more paranoid amongst us may find this disturbing,For ourselves it did not spoil our enjoyment and would return without hesitation.

We came here last minute without a booking. I called in advance and a table was no problem. We both had sirloin steaks served on the sizzling skillets and they were delicious. Annie served us and she was very friendly and welcoming. All reasonably priced too. Highly recommend a visit here.
