Excellent pub with an excellent beer garden but the food wasn't.first time I've been here and was really impressed with everything.friendly staff and one of the best beer gardens I've been in but my fish and chips were a big letdown.Thick cut frozen chips which I didn't enjoy at all and the fish wasn't much better.it didn't even look right to me but tasted just about ok.peas were nice tho and my wife did enjoy her scampi and chips.she had no complaints at all..I would come back here but I'll definitely be trying a meal that doesn't come with chips

We went there for our anniversary and the food was disgusting. The staff were great, The chef let the side down. I was a chef for 20years so I know my food.

The beers were the worst we have had today in Kendal. Two different beers, both flat as a pancake. When mentioned to the lady behind the bar she just laughed.

Wonderful place to eat and socialize. Such a clean, done up pub. One of my favorite in Kendal. Lian and the team excell theirselves every single time, the food is always the best quality and quantity. Massively child and dog friendly!

Our family had been at Brockhole on the high wire adventure for a rainy morning and the Windermere area was heaving for lunch, so we decided to stop on the way home for late lunch and happened upon the Duke. The pub welcomed us as a family of six with three dogs and the food was really good pub grub. The shandy was lovely and ice cold too. We left having very much enjoyed the food and good portion sizes so we were full!

Food OK but service quite slow, took 20 minutes to get a drink at the table

Went last week at lunch time. It was pretty quiet at the time so no trouble getting a table. The meal was lovely I had the steak pie which was served in a tin with a pastry top( so pleased it was shortcrust pastry ) the chips were crispy, and the veg Hubby had the fish and chips again very enjoyable. Highly recommended

Visited today for lunch,ordered soup(leak and potato) soup was very peppery,kids burger was ok i guess,squid starter came with very spicy mayo,rest of the food was ok,but not great. Wont be coming back

Not good at all a very long wait for food and terrible service at the bar from a younger girl Soup wasn't changed on the board so my son got the wrong one and waited 20 minutes for ketchup. Fish was undercooked and chips for the steak pie was also undercooked. Got refunded for the items but won't be back unfortunately.

The lady working the bar today is in the wrong job very rude and I won’t be back!!! Chicken platter came with normal beans not bbq

Mislead by the 4 Star rating. Awful experience from start to finish. Booked a table for myself and my partner on the first floor. Upon arrival the entire first floor was booked out for a function, but fortunately we found a table down stairs with no help from staff. After placing our order at the bar, 2x burgers and 2x drinks the wait begun. 90 minutes later 1x burger had made it way to the table, raw & under cooked! We then queried the location on the 2nd burger which wasn't even placed on our order and had to be reordered. After sending back the back the under cooked burger we then had to wait and additional 30 mins for our food and still had items missing! Once we received our food i even felt guilty eating in from of many other tables playing the same waiting game. Staff were not helpful nor did they seem even remotely interested. Defiantly would not visit again.

Came in while being shown the area, it's super close to the train station, loads of seating outside, also has fire heaters which are so lovely! Food was hearty, served promptly and tasty. Drinks were good also! Huge shouts also to Taz who was really friendly serving us👌🏾

Absolutely disgusted at the “service” we received yesterday. My daughter and son in law booked a table for 5pm for 8 people. The table was upstairs, I’m disabled and found it difficult and painful to get upstairs but when my daughter booked she was told there were no tables downstairs. There was at least 3 tables free and big enough for us all. My son in law went downstairs and ordered the drinks and asked for the menu. He was told that they had stopped taking food orders as the chef had to catch up. Then one of the staff came and said the card had been declined. Luckily my son in law has his banking app on his phone so checked his account and it showed it HAD gone through. This happened to 2 other tables while we were there. I went down to the bar to see when we could order food as our 5 year old twin grandsons were very hungry and I’m Type 1 diabetic and needed to eat. I was told the chef was coming back in about 15 minutes, so was he catching up on orders or had he gone home? The attitude of the young girl on the bar was appalling. It wasn’t her problem apparently. I hope the owners see this review and MAKE it her problem! Mothers Day was ruined for both me and my daughter whose eldest son had come home on leave from the RAF especially for Mothers Day. The older lady said she had just started working there so can’t criticise her as she seemed overwhelmed. The young girl on the other hand was cocky and is obviously not suited to a customer facing role! We left an hour after arriving without ordering any food and we certainly won’t be going back. We ended up at Wetherspoons where the service was quick and cheerful. It’s not really somewhere to go for a family celebratory meal but beggars can’t be choosers. Oh and a final word on the Duke, £2.50 for a Fruit Shoot is bloody daylight robbery

Daughter booked table for mother's day for 5pm was told wait was at least 1 HR no one in .place was filthy staff didn't seem bothered about customers . Won't be going back again

Nothing special it's clean & serves food & of course beer etc it's a simple stop off for us

Absolutely incredible service ,fast and friendly nothing we asked for was any trouble or to much , really made us feel very welcome. The food both times we've been have been beyond what we could of imagined , everything cooked and plated to perfection , we've eaten at alot of places but in my opinion this is one of the best places to eat , chill have a warm welcoming atmosphere and we will be recommending to everyone. Thank you to all the staff for the amazing work you guys do.

Food was very nice. A little short staffed but our group was looked after very well by a young Scottish lady. Some of our pre-ordered desserts were unavailable but complimentary alternatives were offered.

Food was lovely. I couldn't fault it. However, the 1 member of staff that was on was rude and made the whole table of 9 feel uncomfortable. We will not be returning for that reason.

To be honest, one girl made the whole experience. I've got to say to please 13 hungry people, young and old on her own. And make everyone satisfied with their meals.. Would have spent more more money there if the Boss or manager put more staff on. Felt super awkward making the very compliant single staff member do any more work as she already made us 100% welcome. I usually complain about my work and being understaffed but my life is nothing hard to compare with this girl. I'd love to work with her in my business because she has unbelievable talent to make sure every customer is happy and a unbelievable work ethic.

We popped out for dinner and had a lovely time. There were some great beers on, good food and excellent service. We were hosted marvellously by Taz and three of us had the smash burger. It was excellent. The pizzas looked good too. There was a lovely atmosphere to the place and a fire crackling away nearby.

Back to being a nice place to eat & have a pint. We met a couple of friends for dinner & we all had a nice meal. Will visit again

Very friendly staff who were welcoming

My family booked a table for 18. This was to celebrate my grandsons 11th Birthday on 23 December. On arriving we were directed to an upstairs room. This was a struggle for my granddad who is 92. He had to climb the stairs. The room was absolutely freezing. We ask for the heating to be put on and was met with an attitude from a young member of staff. She replied, that she could not put it on. That's it! My granddad is 92. Again, " can't do" Nobody, attended us and we were left on our own. The same young girl came upstairs 30 minute later. Went to all the grandchildren and asked for ID on all the children. My eldest, who is 6'7" and is 23. Said, to the young girl, "do I not look older enough?" She said, you look barely out of the womb" discusting attitude. They started to bring the startes out 45minutes later. My 20 year old Grandson, started to eats his and found a snail climbing up the small pot. There was slime all over the food. Only about 4 had received their starters. We took photos and went to complain. We was met with accusations that we had planted the snail, again from the same young girl. We said, "check you cameras and surely if we had, then we would do it at the end of the night before paying. Absolutely, absurd attitude So we just left. They need to get rid of that member of staff. Will never recommend or go back

Popped in here for a quick drink mid Christmas shopping. It's just one of your regular chain pubs, just a token one or two things on the menu for vegans. It was very nice though to sit and just have a drink.

Could do with a bigger vegan menu BUT the staff were more than accommodating with our dietary requirements and very helpful and cheerful, too. All in all, lovely nosh, decent beer, lovely people, my girlfriend and I would deffo come here again.

Delivered starters and mains at same time. Table wasn't clean. Frozen garlic mushrooms - I'd been before and they used to be lovely creamy ones with ciabatta = disappointed. Main was a Christmas dinner - which was mainly mashed potato, most of the rest of it was overcooked and going cold. Other starter was nachos, which had obviously been microwaved. 2nd main was burger, which was like a bit of cardboard and also luke warm. Wont' be bothering going there again for food

Booked a table of 18 here for a birthday dinner and from the start didn’t feel very welcome. There was one staff member that had a terrible attitude from the start yet we continued to eat here despite that. Starters were bought out with no cutlery and ten minutes later after asking 3 different member of staff we didn’t receive any (so it all became cold including the soup) then to our surprise we found a SNAIL in one of our starters. Absolutely disgusting. We let the staff know and no one tended too it. After asking to speak to the manager one of the staff members said “well there wasn’t a snail in it when I bought it to you” suggesting we had put a snail in our starter. How odd when no one had actually eaten their meal. WILL NOT BE COMING BACK HERE ABSOLUTELY DESGUSTING!!!

Turned up with 20 others for a drink after a long walk. Only one member of staff behind the bar but she did a great job serving everyone as quickly as possible. Traditional pub with comfy seating and friendly locals. Real hand pumped beer on tap which was great. Becoming scarce these days.

Appalling attitude off staff. Asked to setup tab which had done previously refused bluntly & rudely. Absolutely appalling won't visit again.

Popped in for lunch. Food was ok, wouldn’t be in a hurry to return to eat there. It was also very cold in there too - maybe we were sat in the wrong spot!

The lady at the bar was lovely we ordered food which took a while confit was half term and very quiet. I ordered vegetarian Thai green curry which turned out not curry tasting and not warm and the naan bread was hard . I didn’t complain but did give feedback to lady on the bar who apparently was also the chef tonight! She said she would give feedback! Husbands meal was ok ciabatta beef with a small amount of gravy but chips were warm nor hot

I don't know how old the feed photos are but my 3 bean chilli was a blatant 1/2 tin of 3 beans from lidl mixed with a barbecue / not chilli sauce. 1/3 small cup of rice and a hand sised naan bread thin and dry. The chilli was like piss water I had to ask for a spoon. The food quality here has died.

The food was good and didn't cost alot the staff were really good aswell . I work away a lot and came here 3 times in a week

Really nice pub, nice beer garden, really nice staff, very clean, had the Sunday Roast, very nice only 1 pick, the Yorkshire pudding wasn’t home made, the rest was lovely, dog friendly, car park, definitely visit again.

Wow...we went for an evening meal and enjoyed the food that much we went back for a 2nd night. The staff were really friendly and the pub itself is really nice. We sat in an outside booth and took advantage of the fire pit which is a great idea. Would 100% recommend this place.

We had a quick lunch here. The waiter was lovely and helpful. Food came out quickly and was really nice and plentiful. Would return to this pub.

Booked a room upstairs for 20. Pre ordered so no major issues. Everything was average, nothing really was remarkable except the whitebait starters. 6 whitebait each, laid out on a bed of lettuce. Yes, you read that right. SIX. Good job we were in high spirits, we just laughed. One of the party did complain and they brought a few more out... but just for him. It made for a good joke between us all, but not for good reviews.

Good choice of drinks ,and a lovely beer garden, dog friendly in or outside. Food was only ok though. Portions a little small. I ordered scampi , it was nice enough but only 7 small scampi pieces wasnt enough with chips and peas to warrant the £13, maybe just a bad choice ,my wife had cheese and onion pie and chips and enjoyed it.Service was excellent.staff very freindly.

Where to start…… booked a table for a set time & was shown to a different table upon arriving. We could see our table with our name on & reservation with someone else sat on it. We weren’t told anything about service & so helped ourselves to menus, after a few minutes of sitting on the hard chair & my 71 year old mother feeling like she needed a booster we moved tables. We ordered food & waited & waited & waited. About 45mins to an hour later our food arrived. The only good thing & the reason for the 1 star is that it was tasty, however after waiting such a long time I likely would have ate a scabby horse! We waited for our empty plates to be moved but they never were. We approached the bar & ordered desserts, 3 desserts. The server told me it would be a 30-40 min wait for food, I asked if this applied to 3 desserts & was told no. Low & behold after 40 minutes, and our empty plates still not cleared, we started to query our desserts. We were told 5 mins. After 10, I went back to the bar & asked for a refund. Not once did I get an apology & the woman asked if I’d like to keep it til I returned? Returned? I wouldn’t return here if you paid me!! After some back & forth & her trying to justify I was told it would be a 40 min wait FOR THREE DESSERTS, I eventually got a refund. Again, no apology. No other member of staff or management to jump in & apologise. In fact the staff look miserable being there. If your looking for a nice cosy pub with some good grub & friendly service then do not go here! Utterly disgraceful!

We stayed un our motohome on carpark for.2nights we had food at the pub and it was very nice we will be gou g back very friendly staff

My husband and I came in tonight for a meal. We booked a table we came in and got pointed towards a table in the corner this table was in the doorway of the kitchen. We sat down at the table that hadn't been cleaned from the last person. We waited for 15 minutes to see a menu or be asked if we would like a drink, the 3 girls behind the bar kept walking past us or catching our eye and then just chatted between themselves. I went up to the bar to see about some drinks or a menu and was ignored again for 5 minutes before we finally gave up and left. This was a joke I have never seen service like this.

Ideal if you're using the Cricket Club Carpark for an overnight stop.

The Duke ist ein richtig schöner Ort, um entspannt ein paar Ales und Beers zu trinken und Essen zu genießen. Draußen gibt es warme Feuerstellen und die Bedienung ist äußerst aufmerksam und freundlich. Preislich ist es voll okay und die Toiletten sind sehr sauber und schön. Hier kommen wir gerne wieder.

Waren zwei Mal zum Essen und trinken im Duke. Schneller Service und gutes Essen. Gut besuchter Pub. Im Aussenbereich gibt es sogar beheizte Hütten.

Reserved a table outside, they couldn’t find reservation so sat us outside with a table fire that wasn’t working. When I queried the £5 deposit we made paid for the ‘cabin’ table outside I was told to ‘come back later when we are less busy’.

An island of booze surrounded by traffic. Where people go after work, which is why I occasionally go there. Everything is so-so. I've not eaten there, but I would expect the food to be OK, much as you would expect in any similar place.

Lovely food, amazing onion gravy. Good value for the food especially the sides. Drinks are also very affordable. The music were nostalgic 2000s bops and I was loving it.

Went in last saturday sat outside in the pergolers lovely seating area which came in handy when it rained hard for half a hour we was dry whilst having a few beers not many in and didnt see any food so cant comment we would return if on hol in kendal

The drinks are good, the problem however is the staff. Extremely rude female working behind the bar! Will not be returning until improved.

Popped in on a random Thursday evening after my daughter had been at an awards ceremony at the college. Literally just picked this place as the beer garden was large and still in the evening sun. Quite a long queue at the bar as only one lady serving which seemed odd on such a nice sunny night. Was surprised then when the food didn’t take long at all to arrive and everything was tasty and reasonably priced. Burger was huge and pizza was homemade and delicious, kids meals were decent enough too, only recommendation would be a meal deal for the kids where a drink and desert are included. Should have got pics of the adult mains as words don’t do them justice.

Sandwiches were door stoppers but delicious and fair value Beer not overpriced Will call again

Wow how rude was the duty manager I believe she is called Sarah Calling last orders at 10:30 and ask why she says because I said so and says you have till 11:30 to drink up and get out even when online it says there open till 12 and still plenty people in the pub wanted to buy drinks service was refused. Liam and Sean where always nice and polite , and never been made to feel so uncomfortable and unwelcome in the Duke This lady tonight has soured my taste of the Duke and will be now looking for a new local where I can get served past 10:30pm on a Saturday Night

Good food at a reasonable price and a nice pale ale

The staff were incredibly rude. We made it into a joke because the way they behaved was laughable but it did put a bit of a dampener on the last night of our holiday.

Decided to call in for a evening meal and it was average at best I had the steak pie which was ok and the wife had the pizza portion size was ok we both decided to have a dessert and at just a penny or two under six quid it was a bit of a let down a very very small slither of lemon tart , would we return ... probably not

Pub is ok but I bought a pint of Shipyard beer and it's all I really drink so I know what it tastes like, this was not shipyard I was given. On my way out I asked if they were sure it was shipyard and barlady said yes they were sure ?? It was not though, definitely.

I asked for a pint and a coffee, was told quite rudely no, I can see that they serve meals and I am pretty sure they serve coffee. I was not going to argue as I could see the bar person must of got out the wrong side of bed. Very abrupt

Eaten here a few times now , great food and service but very unhappy having my dinner with other customers dog laid on the furniture in the eating area !!! Not a dog hater , just not in a eating place ,,,,I won`t be back !

Staff refuse to check the CCTV to see if my purse was left on the bar unless i go to the police. Im from London so cant do this as its not emergency and Can only assume they have looked and a member of staff has stolen it!!. So unhelpful the purse is expensive and i need to find it. Ive not asked to view it myself i would just like them to check and see if it was left on the bar. Most disgusting customer service very unprofessional. Must be thieves!!
