It appears the Royal has got too big for its boots. After a fair stay earlier this year albeit with a poor dinner which consisted of a pound bakery sausage cut into 3! It has now massively increased room costs. Fortunately we have found better.

We booked this room last minute and the room itself was beautiful. I just felt the whole establishment had a strong smell of fish mounting and night 🌙. I assume it was from the restaurant. Beautiful building a little expensive on drinks in comparison to other places local but lovely interior to admire. Breakfast was beautiful, and our breakfast host was a lovely guy who was very accommodating

Initial service was good, but having finished our main courses nobody bothered with us. 20 minutes later, our plates were still on the table. We intended to have a dessert and coffee but the staff were too busy chatting to one another to come and take our order or clear the table, so we left and The Royal lost the additional revenue.

Visit started well with order taken promptly and food served quickly. However from there it went downhill. The food was reasonable but no one did a checkback and 20 minutes after finishing our main courses, our plates were still on the table. We intended to have a dessert and coffee, but the staff were too busy chatting to one another to be bothered to take an order from us. So we left and the establishment lost the extra revenue.

Waited an hour for food at lunchtime. Food arrived and one of the pizzas was inedible! The egg was raw and the pizza base was sodden! Could’ve sucked it through a straw it was that wet! The pizza was sent back and another one came but we requested no egg because we didn’t want to risk it. They only charged us half price. Despite the pizza being covered in jalapeños it wasn’t spicy at all. The other pizza had a very soggy bottom but my son ate it. No one at any point asked us if the food was okay. The fish board (£17), was described as being served with a selection of artisan breads. It came with one slice of bread. It certainly wasn’t a £17 board! It was more like a plate of buffet food! Wouldn’t recommend! Feels like a tourist trap!

We visit Kirkby Lonsdale once a year but this was the first time at the weekend so we decided to have Sunday lunch. We called in at The Royal and booked for 1.30 in the bar. When we returned it was very busy and ours was the only spare table in the bar. We were given menus, although not the Sunday lunch ones which I had to go and find, and were told someone would come and take our drinks order soon. That turned out to be a rather lengthy ten minutes, by which time we were ready to order the food. We were sitting in the area in front of the bar, on a wooden floor which must be very highly sprung - every time someone walked past, my back was jarred up and down a few times which soon became very annoying. My wife switched places with me. We both had the roast beef Sunday lunch - 2 good sized slices of beef that was lovely and tender and very tasty, a large Yorkshire pudding, some cabbage, 2 roast potatoes, mash and, as others have said, half a roast carrot - but it must have been 8 inches long! There was plenty gravy which was nice. We had a side of cauliflower cheese which was nice but rather small for it's £4.95 price tag. Overall, we both really enjoyed the meal.

Stayed here for 3 nights. The breakfast was excellent and we ate an evening meal here which was perfectly good. Plenty of choice too and reasonably priced. Service was no problem. Compared to some of the other eating restaurants/pubs it is much brighter and lighter inside, some of the other places we considered were really dark inside which put us off.

The Royal needs some investment, the room was tired. Flaky paint, damaged wardrobe, chipped bath. I could not close the blinds, so no chance of sleeping in. It seems 20% of the staff do 80% of the work. Bar staff just stand around chatting whilst one person managed the busy bar. Mentioned the chipped bath ,which resulted zero response from management. Well done Chris for being engaging and doing a grand job on reception and in the bar. I have stayed here three or four times and at £180/night I don't want to play room bingo hoping I get a room that's in a a better condition. shame on the management for there lack of engagement.

Shocked by the poor quality and poor presentation of our 'food'. Even the chips were burnt, soggy salad super dry fish, all delivered by an unshaven scruffy waiter. This place was once an amazing place to eat, but we will never eat here again.

The place looks lovely but the service is awful. So slow. Our waitress, Imogen was fine at the beginning but once our main meal had been cleared we were left without drinks or dessert menus for over half an hour and had to remind her twice. I've been a waitress and understand things can get hectic, but the place wasn't busy - she had time to fill up straws and do other, non-urgent things. I had the crispy hake fillet, which overall was delicious, but not crispy! My husband had a steak which was over cooked (asked for rare, got medium well) and overpriced. We also weren't the only table who got the wrong steak and food. In the end we left without second drinks or dessert (we did pay but had to go up to the bar to do so because we couldn't get anyone's attention).

We had lunch here in February 2024. We liked the relaxed atmosphere, the fact that they had the days newspapers and that they were very dog friendly. I had sausages with peas and mash which could have done with pepper salt and a nicer sauce. My partner had fish pie which was also in need of some herbs. All in all a bit underwhelming: a tiny bit of effort with the food could have made the experience so much nicer

The hotel is full of character. The no parking is a pain, and there is no discount even though you’re staying at the hotel. We were in Room 14 nice big room and bathroom. Dated to be fair, it needed a lick of paint No proper heating either and an electric fire was in the room, which is fine, if you were staying at a B&B This was £150 per night ! Booked here to meet up with fiends for an afternoon tea . The afternoon tea is £20 . Not expensive as such but what came out was poor, considering we have been to its partner hotel , Mitton Hall for an extra £4.50 for afternoon tea this was poor. The cakes were tiny and I mean tiny! We got a cheese and ham small toastie, one small sausage roll, a chicken wrap , and a bruschetta with cheese and tomato , the walnut loaf with way too much butter in, almost as if they’d slapped the butter on like they didn’t care! The choc was the size of a tea spoon it was that small, a flaky pasty with raspberry’s and cream , then a scone . Very disappointing . I would have thought eh cakes would have been a little bigger . The sandwiches were all flung on a separate plate not very nicely presented . The staff were a bit lacks a daisy ! We asked for Prosecco that never came . Mix up with drinks etc . Won’t be back ! Felt cheated of our £20 Lovely afternoon tea at their partner restraint mitton hall and better value for money

What a lovely hotel. Really nice comfortable bar area. Good size room. Very clean. Good bedding and towels. Nice size bathroom and shower which always had hot water. Fantastic breakfast with plenty of choices. The only downside to the hotel was we decided to eat our evening meal in the restaurant and we were disappointed. Poor food quality. Vegetable lasagne served in what I’d call a breakfast cereal bowl. My burger had cheese on it that I would say came from one of those squirt tubes. Not good. Paid the bill and was given the receipt but not asked if we enjoyed the meal/was everything ok. This is basic good service guys and should not even need training! We went to The Royal for their ‘beat the clock pizza deal’. We go quite often for this and this time we were extremely disappointed to be handed our bill at full price. We asked for beat the clock on arrival and we were happily told yes and sat at our table. We then ordered our pizza and again we weren’t told the deal wasn’t on. We requested our bill and much to our dismay were charged full price and when we questioned our waiter he informed us he had only just found out himself and there wasn’t anything to be done about the situation. The pizza itself was great however the service and manner in which this was handled was so poor I’ve been put off ever coming again. I believe we weren’t the only customers unhappy with this as others were complaining as we were leaving.

The most disappointing evening I have ever had in Kirkby Lonsdale. I have lived here for 12 years and this was shocking. No atmosphere, staff had no charisma - not one smile all evening. 4 x steaks - all of which cooked incorrectly- thank goodness I ordered rare 🤪it was more medium to well done. We have just visited the Royal where we have previously eaten several times and food has been ok. Tonight's food was disgusting to say the least. So much so that we have both felt unwell since. I ordered a tuna nicoise salad which consisted of baby gem lettuce, soft boiled eggs, green beans and tuna. No dressing whatsoever resulting in the most bland meal I have ever had. My partner had a pizza which was greasy, stodgy and also tasteless. We expressed our disappointment to one manager who said he would pass on comments to the chef. No offer to amend the bill for inferior food was made. He then returned and insulted us by offering a reduction of £4! A second manager did advise he would Waiver the cost of the tuna nicoise. This manager didn't appear bothered and was quite deadpad, without any customer service skills ar all. Clearly the comments that previous patrons have left appear to have fallen on death ears!, such a shame as we will never ever eat there again, even if they offered us to eat for free.

A group of 16 of us stayed and dined at the hotel over a weekend Friday - Sunday. Everyone agreed the hotel provided a great experience with its history, décor, fine bar, restaurant, comfortable rooms and super organised and charming staff. Breakfasts and dinner were excellent - the imaginative chef and his team together with all the staff ensured we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay and super 'get together' evening. With its history and prime location looking over the market square of this historic town, I (my third stay) would recommend staying at The Royal without hesitation - a real gem for a getaway for couples or a group ion a town steeped in history and folklore and surrounded by wonderful countryside.

The same pizza came back with the right additions but it had just been heated up again. It was impossible to cut or eat and was black underneath and burnt round the edges. We got the waiter over again and they said they would make another but my daughter had finished her meal by this time and we couldn't wait any longer. Thankfully weren't charged for it but it did mean I had no tea!

Having travelled all day we decided to get a takeaway pizza for Saturday's evening meal. With at least one former italian takeaway having closed in the area we decided to buy from the Royal Hotel. The online menu didn't completely reflect whatvghe currently offered so we had to change our choices on telephone ordering but otherwise was ok and we were given a pickup time. We walked down the road to pick up at the allotted time to be told it would be ready in 5 minutes. The brasserie was busy inside so not a problem and we had a little walk and came back. Five further minutes and we had our pizza and garlic bread. On arriving home we were pleased to see it was authentic Italian crust, nice and thin, crisp and chewy! The toppings were all excellent, our favourite being the spicy warmth of the cacciatore although the garlic bread and margherita were equally as good. Silence while we ate, thoroughly enjoying this local home cooked slice of Italy.Great food, well cooked, friendly and warm service, what's not to like?

Stayed for one night at the Royal on recommendation of a friend. From the the lady on reception when we first arrived who was very friendly and helpful to all the staff we encountered were extremely friendly and pleasant and we should not forget that these people are working in very challenging times for our enjoyment. We had lunch and dinner at the hotel and the food was lovely and well presented. The hotel exterior is a very impressive building and the inside is just as impressive. Tables had to be booked due to covid but and all the precautions were being taken. For our evening meal we were on table one which is at the rear of the restaurant so you could see all what was going on during the evening I watched a young man who was called Tom he was serving cleaning tables bringing drinks he never stopped nothing was to much trouble for him. He went round to all the tables on a regular basis asking if everyone was ok and did they need anything and explaining the new rules regarding closing times. After we had finished our meal and drinks I had to mention to him that he was a credit to the hotel and I am sure he will go far in the hospitality business. So to the manager of the hotel I hope you thank your staff for an enjoyable short stay at your lovely hotel.

Possibly worst experience I have ever had whilst eating out!Its that bad I don't even know where to start. We have travelled up from Liverpool to spend the weekend with family and thought it would be nice to book somewhere for something to eat as a nice treat.Firstly we where shown to our table, then to be told someone will be back to take our drinks order. Which we 10-15 minutes for! We then ordered our drinks and then waited a further 25 -30 minutes for the drinks to be brought to us! Once we had received our drinks, we then were asked what we would like to eat. So we placed our order and then the nightmare continued...Roughly 40 minutes had passed, so we decided to find out where our food was. Bare in mind my son who is 9 was with us and was starting to get very hungry! Our second round of drinks where brought to our table, and we had asked for the manager. The manager came to our table and rudely asked "what was the problem", which we weren't happy about one bit! He had no idea what was going on, and then decided to ask us what we would like to eat and that he would bring menus over!!! To our shock we could not believe what we were hearing!!! AND still no apology from the manager who just repeatedly told us he didn't know what was going on! They had no idea what had happened to our food order, how unprofessional is that... We were amazed, how could our order go missing!Along with the very rude and unprofessional woman who took our food order he decided to try and blame the new starter along with trying to blame covid. Which only made things worse as a family of 6 came in after us and got there food and meals finished before had been given our second round of drinks and still no food!! Along with many more people. The new starter had nothing to do with the issues we experienced, it mainly from the girl who took our food order which then somehow seem to go missing...We were treated like outsiders, made to feel very uncomfortable, and the service was truly shocking and that's putting it nicely!! We were really looking forward to this but felt really let down, and we will never return again... Oh and they lost my sons order for a glass of milk!!!!!Would I recommend this place to anyone???? NO... NOT EVEN MY WORST ENEMY...

We booked a table 2 weeks ago and were met by the maître d’ and were shown our table. The table would have been fine had we been there for a drink but for a meal, it was low and we were sat in bucket seats. Obviously, we asked to be moved and were shown to a table in a small side room in which the staff came in one at a time for their break which made it feel as though we were eating in the staff room. I ordered a steak at £23 expecting something special - it wasn’t. The menu is very ordinary for the best placed hotel in Kirkby Lonsdale. A member of staff came in while we were eating and polished the surrounding furniture instead of sanitising it. There was no provision made to make it a covid safe environment apart from table sanitising. We were glad to get out of the place and certainly won’t be returning unless and until someone gets a grip of the staff.

We visited this pub as it was close to our Airbnb. It’s a gorgeous place but has a really nice relaxed atmosphere and it was our favourite pub in Kirkby Lonsdale to enjoy a few drinks :0)

We went to the Royal for an evening meal with 4 children. With my son having severe food allergies it’s always a worry for me eating out but from the moment I spoke with Jo on the phone i knew this wasn’t going to be a problem. Jo was very helpful and kindly offered to make my son an alternative. The food was lovely and the service was great we will be eating here again soon Thankyou all !

We visited the royal on a Tuesday evening with friends on the excellent value 50/50 offer . After an excellent afternoon in the village we took our seats at our pre booked candle lit window table . The menu is typical pub fare with a bit of something for everyone. The portions are generous so we skipped starters and shared nibbles olives and chippollata sausages. The mains fish and chips for two the beef and ale pie and a pizza were all declared delicious. The very efficient and friendly staff made for a great evening.

Normally love this place for coffee and lunch when in Kirkby Lonsdale, 4 of us eventually got served coffee this morning which was tepid at best. my wife went back to the bar, but the FIVE girls behind the bar were busy chatting. We ended up leaving and finding an establishment with attendant staff and hot coffee. Maybe the Royal is ready for a staff shake up?

The service was good, but the food was only of average quality for the price. Nice to have a choice of vegetarian dishes on the main menu. The vegan menu looked more interesting, but we only discovered this after we had eaten.

This is a fantastic looking/feeling establishment, that has the potential to be real top drawer in every aspect. We did not stay, but having eaten here during a relatively busy Saturday lunch service I can say that the service can be slow (we had to remind the waitress about our first drinks order) and the quality of the food does not reflect the fact that this is the most expensive pub/bar establishment in Kirkby Lonsdale. Also my partner had fish and chips, which we strongly suspect was cooked from frozen, not fresh. There is better quality home cooked food for less in KL.

Stayed here a couple of times now - they do great deals. Great stay as usual. Staff helpful and breakfast is delicious. This time we did the 50/50 deal so ate both nights in the restaurant. Food was really good - especially the lamb which was apparently so good my husband ordered it both nights. We’ll be back.

We ate at the Royal and having a daughter who is vegetarian and lactose intolerant, it was a joy to find somewhere that had put thought into a menu. Rather than being faced with the usual veggieburger and curry options. Atmosphere good and allows dogs in, especially as weather was dreadful

We ate at the Royal Hotel whilst on holiday in Kirkby Lonsdale! My brother in law ordered lamb shank which stated on the menu, came with Lyonnaise potatoes and pickled red cabbage! When it arrived it was indeed a lamb shank sitting in a bowl of gravy with pieces of potatoes floating around it! The pickled red cabbage arrived in a miniscule container and that was his meal which cost £19.90! He asked where the Lyonnaise potatoes were and the waitress didn't appear to know what they were! When asked if everything was ok he said no! It was not as described in the menu and in his opinion was poor value for money; the staff response was simply a shrug of the shoulders! My friends meal was ordered as bloomer bread with 3 kinds of cheese costing £8.95- this in actual fact was a slice of white bread with toasted cheese and a small amount of leafy salad!!

This quality of the room are good. Nice bathrooms and toiletries. It’s in an excellent position. Right near lovely shops, pubs and restaurants. I was worried about parking before I went however there is ample parking in the market across the road and just up the street. You do have to pay but it’s not overpriced. If you park between certain hours it’s free. The food was good I had evening meals and breakfasts. Not overpriced. Nice atmosphere down stairs in the bar restaurants. The only thing I would say is the staff service was at times was mixed. On some occasions during my stay it was average and on other occasions not great, at other times it was good. It just depended on which staff were on.

Worth a visit, we enjoyed a lovely evening in the hotel. My partner and myself ordered food from the menu and my partner enjoyed hers but mine was not as good as I was expecting. This was immediately put right by the hotel manager who reimbursed with the cost of the meal. Great customer care and service, I would hearty recommend this venue.

I have Crohn’s disease and the public toilets were out of order and went to use the toilets in the hotel. I was working at the Christmas Market in the square opposite the hotel. The manager Damian, shouted across the hallway are you in just to use the toilet or are you a customer which I responded yes and proceeded. I went back to speak to him afterwards and explained that I had Crohn’s disease and that it is a disability that is not obvious and that I couldn’t use the public toilets. He didn’t care and said that I wouldn’t be happy if I came for something for free from my stand. I am staying in Kirkby and had planned to come in for drinks after work and had considered coming back to stay once the Christmas season is over. How ignorant can one person be even after I explained to him!!! What other people with disabilities do you treat like this? Did he not consider that the town is busier because of the Christmas market not just now but because people have enjoyed themselves that they would come back. I will also be flagging you to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation. I have never had this response ever when I have explained my condition. But his response says an awful lot about him as a person. #notamerrychristmas

We booked a table around a month in advanced for 7.30pm. Arriving on the dot we were told that another group were still sat at our table and so we were asked to wait at the packed extremely noisy bar until our table became available. We waited for 25 minutes after our reservation time, to be told that our table was finally free. When we arrived at the table the source of the problem became obvious- the previous occupants had been booked on the table from 6.15pm and so there hadn't been enough time for them to finish their meal before we arrived.

Stayed over at The Royal on a one night DBB offer (we tried for two nights but the hotel was full). Welcomed warmly by David and reserved our table for dinner (you must do this ....the tables are quickly filled by residents and locals alike).

I love the Royal it’s stylish without being too posh. I stayed here for three nights recently. Nothing to grumble about really. Just one little niggle cos I was asking for something out of the ordinary. I asked for a packed breakfast cos we were going out early before the start of service. I got one bacon sandwich. Mmmm.

Visited with my family, three kids aged 9, 6 and 18 months. After struggling to get through the busy doorway with a pram, we had no idea whether we were meant to be seated and no staff were around to ask, so we had to sit wherever we could until fifteen minutes later someone came along and offered us a more suitable table.

This place isn't great. The food wasn't nice and the portions are small. The staff are quite nice - one lady was very rude. Won't go again!!

Called in for dinner on our first night of holiday in the Lakes. The Swan was near to where we were staying so handy after travelling. The meals were well cooked and the staff very welcoming and polite. Would return if in area again.

One hour and 15 min wait to get a burger! Then staff had the nerve to asking the food was OK, waste of time and money. Go elsewhere!!!!

Three of us visited here last night and had a very positive experience. Although busy the service was excellent. The staff worked hard and were very attentive. We could not fault the food. The quality of ingredients and flavours were excellent. The place was spotless and would not hesitate to come again, nor recommend it to others.

Held and moved our original booking with the same rates as I couldn't go in May due to health reasons but worth the wait. A truly beautiful place to stay. The room was clean and everything we needed in it, the bathroom was something you'd see in a mansion a hughe shower and an old fashioned Victorian bath tub. The bed was warm and comfortable. Breakfast was delicious. Id like to give a special mention to Brooke for her outstanding customer service, she's a credit to the company.
