This is a back handed review as I’m extremely let down and would not return if it wasn’t for a particular member of staff. I have followed from the olive tree and was excited to hear the vine tree opening, I have since been in a few times to the new vine tree and the last time I arrived with friends for lunch. The food was fabulous and the cafe itself is lovely plenty of seating, the biggest problem was the staff. The lady serving front of house is rude, she never smiles, times before I’ve been in she will speak her language to her friends in front of customers making people feel awkward, this particular visit with my friends(group of 6) was the final straw when we witnessed her eating behind the counter chomping with her mouth wide open whilst we were trying to eat! She is incredibly rude when taking orders, she doesn’t seem to be very tolerable of children as we saw a couple go in with their child and the child was very happy saying hello to the lady and she quite literally ignored the child. She also pulls faces and rolls her eyes when you’re trying to tell her your food order. There is a lovely young man that comes in and out from the back he is very chatty happy and extremely attentive to the customers, he spoke to us and made time for us to check if the food was okay (something the waitress at front didn’t do) after us, he also went round checking other tables and seemed to make everyone laugh and bring a much happier pleasant energy to the cafe. I’m unsure how the roles in the cafe work and who does what but whoever the young man was I really hope to see him more regularly as he seems to be the saving grace of the cafe! Along with the good food. It is a shame to see how down hill the staffing is going, the lady was at the olive tree and always felt awkward there, however it has dramatically gotten worse! I will be returning as the prices of the cafe are very good and the quality of food I am always satisfied with, I just hope to see more friendly staff, as there is an older generation that mainly spend money in the cafe (myself being one of them) sometimes us oldies want a little chat and a nice smile to brighten our days! If we cannot get that then the least I would expect from any food venue is good manners. Thankyou to the young man.

The waitress came to take our order, I had a bad feeling about the place when she came across as being quite rude, no please or thank you, just took our order and walked away! After waiting nearly 45 minutes our food arrived, my partner ordered an egg mayonnaise baguette, well it looked like the baguette had been fried or something, it was burnt on the outside and she said it tasted greasy! As for myself, I ordered an egg and sausage baguette, when it arrived I couldn't believe how bad it looked, the baguette looked the same as my partners, burnt on the outside, and the fried egg was so over cooked, as were the sausages, it just looked a complete mess! I think the woman that served us knew the food was bad as she was looking at my reaction as she walked back inside (we were sitting outside) my partner ate some of her baguette before saying she couldn't eat any more because it tasted greasy, and I didn't even attempt to eat mine as it was so awful! I took it up to the counter saying how disgusting it looked and I would not be paying for it, she said "I wont charge you for it" I should think not! I payed for the baguette my partner had and our drinks, and left. How this place is still running is beyond belief if that's what its like all the time?

What an attitude! When I first wrote this review I was upset & hurt about the way I was treated. Now I'm calmer I've written this more accurately. I would not have given a review at all if the café owner had not thrown my glasses in the bin. Wish I took photos now! About the only thing that was decent were the mugs of tea but you can't go wrong with that when the tea comes with teabags still in the mug & milk on the side. Hubby had an all day brekky 2. I had the full panini with side salad. The fried egg was overcooked, but hubby was forgiving of that & he doesn't mind lightly cooked bacon, which he ate first. The Chips were nicely cooked, not deep fried & he intended to dip into his baked beans but when he tasted the beans, found they were well over done & stewed. That put him off eating the rest of his food. I ate my salad first which was nice but didn't know the bacon in my panini was undercooked & bottom soggy until I began to eat it. I can't stand barely cooked bacon & soggy bread. Though I'd eaten part of the top half of my panini with my salad. We naturally stopped eating & complained. All up we'd eaten about 1/3 of our food before realising there was a problem with it. The total of our meal would have come to £13.10. £6.95 for brekky with tea, £4.95 for panini & £1.20 for my tea. We were offered a discounted price of £10. My hubby was by now fuming and said he won't pay £10. Being an EastEnder he's very direct but he would have negotiated the discount as I felt £7 was a fair price to pay, if we were allowed to take the uneaten sausage & bacon home for our dog .. as that then would have been equal to half our food served + teas. The server in the café argued with us without let up. Hubby tried to give her some money, she wouldn't cooperate & some money fell on the floor as she told us never to come back. In my upset I left my prescription sunglasses on the counter so had to go back as soon as I realised I'd left them behind. When I returned, being deaf, I couldn't understand what the woman yelled at me after I apologised & told her I would have negotiated our bill & I asked about my sunglasses. My hubby stood at the door & when I walked back out he told me the woman said they had thrown the "glasses in the bin". I have no more words to relay how I feel towards this kind of attitude only that it stinks. I wish I could give zero stars.

My first visit to Clacton and I found this excellent cafe just around the corner from the bus station. I was attracted by the prices and the fact that although it appeared to be busy there were tables available. I found the waitress service excellent and the food was well presented and very good value for money. If or when I return to Clacton for any reason, I shall definitely make a beeline for this establishment. The best value for money I have found in a long time.

Cutlery not individually in a serviette. Chips served were really lovely and tasty. Homemade tomato soup was tasty. Only margarine no butter for bread. Cherries and pancake was not very nice. Smallest Baguette I have any seen! Waitress was attentive. We won’t be returning the social distancing was not enforced so did not feel safe.

We visited on Saturday afternoon and were sat in a seat where I had a direct view into the kitchen. The person who served us was not welcoming or warm at all, but the worse thing was the lack of hygiene. I saw one guy who was in the kitchen sneeze into his hands and tissue, and made no attempt to wash or disinfect them. A few minutes later he was handed a raw frozen sausage by a young lad ( not wearing gloves) who was also working in the kitchen. This appeared a few minutes later on my other half’s plate. So this raw sausage was handled by two people, one who had just sneezed into his hands and tissue and not cleaned them to be served up. Neither of us barely touched our food which was bland and tasteless as we were both put off by what I had witnessed in the kitchen.

We really enjoyed our meal, every time we dine there. So delicious and healthy selection of Mediterranean meal and English breakfast. The chips are handmade which they skinned potatoes and chips it themselves from scratch and fried it . Crispy and soft inside so lovely. The portion of roast dinner are big and meals will filled you up. They greeted you and served you straight away and it’s only short wait for the meal. The only thing is they only accept cash but with reasonable price you can’t complain. The chef is only friendly and will talk to you if not busy . We’re satisfied customers

Always had a nice full English here in the past and tried the Roast before which was extremely nice. Service is friendly too.Popped in today for a full English with a friend and it was good but not as good as usual. The egg was overcooked. (I'm a dipper). Asked to add hash browns to a breakfast but they forgot. Brought them out very quick though when we mentioned it.I'll put this down to them being busy with the busy Sunday lunch trade. I probably should have ordered a Roast dinner.Had this been my first visit I probably would not go back but I know it's usually amazing so I will visit again. We also both had plates that were annoying spinning on the table every time we tried to cut our food. This was quite annoying. If the owner reads this please ditch the plates that do not sit flat on the table or provide something like a cork or non slip place mat.

We use this cafe when working in the local area. The menu is based around the local market and clients requirements which leans towards breakfast or brunch, with additional options. I avoid this type of food and a predominance of chips, although a few can be a pleasant addition. My choice is if you want something very filling then the Spanish omlette is very good, my absolute favourite and my choice at the moment is their steak and kidney pie which is excellent freshly made well cooked and with garden peas, mushrooms and a few chips is a very good meal. I also like the good range of teas and coffee which I find good quality. The staff I have always found to be well humoured and exceedingly helpful and I have always found that nothing is too much trouble. As a tip using the toilet it is down stairs and the stairs are steep so be mindful, but I have always found them clean. Overall I find this a very good cafe, I have eaten in more expensive restaurants the same type of food at much steeper prices, making this cafe good value.

After previously visiting this restaurant in the past and having a poor experience I decided to give it another go as everyone can have an off day.I am sad to say that once again the food was poorly cooked, poached eggs were barely cooked and most of it was left on the plate, very overdone toast, the menus need a wipe as very unclean. He ordered a full English and I had a full filled panini and both were delicious. The full English was freshly cooked, not swimming in oil and just looked extremely fresh whilst my panini had bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes and cheese - the flavours were awesome. One word of warning let it cool a little first as I burnt the roof of my mouth as it was too hot. I often stumble into the Tree on a Sunday afternoon wearing my dark sunglasses and a confused stupor, some way off my best. Breakfast number 5 is my personal Olive vice, as it comes with scrambled egg. The staff are pleasant and attractive, and it never seems to be a bother when I ask for the tomatoes to be replaced with hash browns. There's a small quasi-veranda out the front, and I like to sit there with my coffee watching the subhuman Clacton scum go by, swearing, spitting, and letting their children walk in the road.

Visited this small cafe yesterday - presentable from the outside and range of basic fare from sandwiches / panninis to roasts / frieds and reasonable deserts. Prices average.Requested 4 coffees which arrived after 10 minutes and then ordered 4 sets of sandwiches. In short, these took a further 30 - 40 minutes (!!) to appear and whilst we were told on enquiring that our food "would be the next out", it most certainly was not - got the impression that anyone ordering a larger meal was taking preference over us as several later arrivals got their plates first. Food basically white bread 'doorstep' sandwiches - egg and bacon version actually quite good. Conclusion: Whilst we did receive an apology, this place needs to review it's table management and is best avoided at lunchtimes if you (a) are immediately hungry or (b) have any plans for the early afternoon !!!!!!

I tried this cafe for the first time as it was recommended to me On first impressions the menus were not the cleanest. I ordered a all day breakfast which came with a drink and toast or sliced bread included in the prize, my drink arrived fairly quickly. Ufortunately the side of the cup was dirty and clearly not with coffee from inside as i tried to wipe if off with a napkin and it refused to move, the teaspoon was bent out of all shape and in my opinion should have been in the bin!The coffee was strong and bitter and not that pleasant to drink in all honesty.I then procceeded to wait patiently for well over 20 minutes for my food to arrive whilst people around me were served, at no point did anyone come and update me on the progress of my order. When my food did arrive it was good althought for over 5 pound i would have expected the sausage to have been of a much better quality and the beans were more juice than beans!Whilst eating at no point did the waitress come and check if my food was okay, when i finished she was nowhere in sight to ask for the bill so made my way to the front to pay, upon doing so there was no thank you given in response to my payment.I felt that the service was sadly lacking and so for that matter will not be returning and would not wish to recommend this cafe to others

Yes they may appear to be a cafe but believe me you cant go wrong. They cater for all tastes and the food is filling and NOT all chips with.... their prices are very good I would recommend them highly, they have maintained the standard they had last year

Popped in here for lunch today and ordered a jacket potato. The plate was filled sky high with filling and a lovely fresh salad. Staff were friendly and the food bill was inexpensive for what we had. My only criticism would be that there was a bit too much butter on my spud! Will go back!

Not one of these that plays loud, annoying music. It is right in town and does nice lunches and evening meals.

For that little bit more, friendly staff and owners, great dinners and service, we go here at least 4 times a year, always pleased, seats could do with a little more padding or maybe I could loose some weight.

We had the all day breakfast. The eggs were hard, the sausages were cheap and tasteless and overcooked. The bacon was hard and the tomatoes were not cooked. It was expensive for what it was

Just been on a week end break to Clacton, visiting my fiances family for a Golden Wedding party, we stayed in the Travelodge in town, which did not have much choice for breakfast so we ended up at the Olive Tree just around the corner. The welcome was very warm, and the breakfast was well cooked and very substantial. It was so good we went back the following morning, as soon as we walked in the guy who runs the cafe welcomed us and remembered our drinks order, wow, we were impressed.Again the breakfast was huge and very well cooked, the coffee was the best coffee I have tasted for a very long time and it was so reasonable. The only regret was that we were not going back the following morning as we had to go home!If you have to go to Clacton you have to try this place!

We had the all day breakfst. It was terrible and expensive. The eggs were hard, the sausages were baked and overcooked. The bacon was hard and brittle and the tomatoes were not cooked. The baked beans were cold and hash browns were cold. The only redeaming feature in this mess was the toast. It must be that most of the customers are day trippers and will not return although when we were there there were only two other customers

There's two things I must have when I order a full english, Black pud and hash browns, the Olive Tree has both.Breakfast was large and tasty, but the sausages tasted strange, almost perfumey. I also seemed to have half the poaching water from my eggs swimming about. There dinner and lunch menu looked good with lots of diversity an we will definitely be back to try again.

Overpriced on the cod and chips portion was small and frozen chips from a bag fish was ok should have gone somewhere else.

Fantastic fish and chips - we ordered and paid online (easy and completely hassle-free) and we arrived a few minutes early and our order was made up there and then. The fish is really fresh and it has been cooked in fresh, clean oil, which allows you to taste all the flavour of the fish. And the chips are great, too!

We had some relatives from Devon with their dog visiting the area and needed to find a decent dog friendly place to eat. I contacted The Ship, and they advised me that they were very dog friendly, so we booked a table for lunchtime. Because of the dog, we were given a table in the bar area with a hard floor, which was understandable. The pub/ restaurant was fairly busy, but it didn't really impact on the service, especially as there were just 2 staff members serving. The meals were well presented, plentiful and hot, and served with a smile. Two of us had whitebait main meals, one had grilled cod, and the other had the chicken burger. Everything was nicely cooked and good quality and we all really enjoyed the food. Three of us had really nice desserts, and we all came away pleasantly full. Will we return? Definitely! Especially as we only live less than 10 miles away.

We popped in for a Sunday roast for the first time since the pub went under new management last year. WOW! The best roast dinner I’ve had in a restaurant ever. The meat was tender, the potatoes were perfectly crisp, the gravy was out of this world. I opted for a side of cauliflower cheese, which was delicious. The service was amazing too, lovely friendly staff who couldn’t have done more for us. Highly recommend! Can’t wait to go back.

A few months back the Three Jays had new management , he has transform the pub utterly, warm, friendly ,most welcoming, but the prize and jewel in the crown, must be the food on offer, truly mind blowing , people go to the big chain restaurants , yet the food on offer is not a patch on the food at the three Jays. You could almost say just like Mum used to make. Veg fresh favourable , roast potato’s so tasty, nice crispy skin, texture , the meat was outstanding so tender , not paper thin again like the big chains offer. Gravy was really tasty made the meal even more extra. Price was another key , not over priced , A restaurant within a truly great public house. So no need to what for further reviews, go on book a meal NOW, I’ve seen their Christmas food list, mind blowing .
